#DearIran.

Trending on Twitter.

There's a lot going on within this tag, and I can't see what the original examples were. I don't want to call undue attention to what is being said by Twitter users with a small following. I'm seeing maps of the United States isolating Washington D.C. (or the White House specifically) as the right place for Iran to target (with silly alternatives, such as Texas or Staten Island). I'm seeing people indicating that they hate President Trump too and they had nothing to do with the Soleimani attack. I'm seeing some silly appeasement of Iran (for example "Did anybody ever tall yall was cool and yall can dress amd yall long names are unique").

I recommend clicking on the link above and getting an idea of where that tag is going. It seems to be a quickly evolving meme, so what you see will be different from what I just saw. I think the trend is toward silly, but there is also dark comedy suggesting things that I won't write here.

The trend I see is either silly, tongue-in-cheek, or ignorant. I am inclined to give people I don't know the benefit of the doubt and so will say the trend is silly.

There is a steady stream of TDS/Orange Man Bad, though in the minority at this point.

I was in college when McGovern ran against Nixon.

Everyone hated Nixon, except for the odd jock and guys in ROTC.

I think it was mostly about identifying with the right "in-group", between studies, chasing women, beer, bongs, and rock and roll, not many took the time to actually form considered opinions.

To defend Nixon in any way was to risk losing all of your friends.

I think that is mindset of much of the hate Trump crowd, a kind of groupthink borne of ignorance and individual insecurity.

Twitter is infested with idiots.

I should have added, not like the Academy of Immortals that comprises the Althouse commentariat.

We know Twitter is a cesspool. This is just more evidence.

“Everyone hated Nixon....”

Except that he won 49 states.

I wish he had just publicly fired everyone involved with the break-in. What was the point, anyway? It’s not like he got anything out of it.

Dear Iran, we are trying to help you get rid of the small core of evil murderers that are poisoning the world and strangling you. Hope this helps. Let us know if there is anything else we can do. Love, USA.

Dear Iran,

To your leaders, Foxtrot Yankee.

To the people of the Iran, the 21st century is here. C'mon in, the water's fine!

I think we don’t use the word “craven” enough. Even if you disagree with Trump’s actions here, cringing, wringing your hands and begging to be spared while holding out other innocents as proper targets is disgusting. Disgusting. I am reminded, as I am so often these days, of CS Lewis’ Abolition of Man.

“ We make men without chests and expect of them virtue and enterprise. We laugh at honour and are shocked to find traitors in our midst.”

Quite the Twitter thread, eh? So glad I stopped using Twitter months ago.

With Soleimani in place at age 60, it almost certainly would have taken over a decade for internal elements within Iran to alter his iron-fisted influence over the course of Iranian policy.

With Soleimani now gone, in the manner he was disposed of, there is a better chance that elements within Iran will rise to change that course.

#DearIran does not seem concerned with facilitating that kind of positive historical change.

The Twitterati message:

“I appeal to every Briton, wherever he may be now, to accept the method of non-violence instead of that of war, for the adjustment of relations between nations and other matters…I do not want Britain to be defeated, nor do I want her to be victorious in a trial of brute strength…I venture to present you with a nobler and braver way worthier of the bravest soldier. I want you to fight Nazism without arms, or, if I am to maintain military terminology, with non-violent arms. I would like you to lay down the arms you have as being useless for saving you or humanity. You will invite our great leader and Signor Mussolini to take what they want of the countries you call your possessions. Let them take possession of your beautiful island, with your many beautiful buildings. You will give all these but neither your souls, nor your minds. If these gentlemen choose to occupy your homes, you will vacate them. If they do not give you free passage out, you will allow yourself, man, woman, and child, to be slaughtered, but you will refuse to owe allegiance to them …my non-violence demands universal love, and you are not a small part of it. It is that love which has prompted my appeal to you.”

When it comes to conflicts, it is far more just to kill the leaders directly than slaughtering their followers to get to them.
That so many on the left cannot see this exposes their insincerity to social justice.

The hashtag started with actress Rose McGowan:
https://twitter.com/rosemcgowan/status/1212976832544460801?s=20

Dear #Iran, The USA has disrespected your country, your flag, your people. 52% of us humbly apologize. We want peace with your nation. We are being held hostage by a terrorist regime. We do not know how to escape. Please do not kill us. #Soleimani

I'm sure Iranian mullahs really appreciated seeing Rose McGowan's tits and all the support.

PS The Iranians probably think McGowan is Trump trolling them. ha ha
