It is raining right now in OC California. So, no sunrise. It just gradually got lighter.

Original Mike म्हणाले...

I looked out the window this morning and saw the sky colors of your top photo. Knew I'd be seeing them again. Thanks!

Jaq म्हणाले...

Pretty much the same here, except our lake is well frozen over earlier than I can remember. I never remember it freezing before the first week of January.

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

"Knew I'd be seeing them again. Thanks!"

Thanks for your confidence.

I only got it because I've learned how fleeting the intense pre-sunrise color can be. Not that long ago, I would have looked and thought, oh, this will be a good one, let's see how it goes, and kept running. Now, I know that whenever the color looks good, I need to stop and catch it, because so often it does not get better, and in just a minute or two, it can decline.

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

What was especially good today, is something you see in the second photo — a bright blue like the blue of a midday clear sky. In 100 sunrises, I hadn't seen one happen like that.

(I'm estimating I've done about 100 sunrise runs, beginning Sept. 9th.)

Clark म्हणाले...

That first picture is incredibly beautiful. Though, as a colorblind person I'm never sure what anything looks like to you all. I see a colorful world, but I know that it is different from what color-visioned people see.

And I am loving these sunrise pictures. I have a soft spot for any project that sets out to observe and chronicle (obsessively even) some aspect of life repeatedly, noticing what stays the same and what changes. Try making a cheese omelet every day for a few months and see what you discover about cheese omelets and the possibilities of variation. Or listen to all the Bach Cantatas in order.

I had a friend who lived in Brooklyn in an apartment that looked out on a brick wall. He did a different painting of that wall every day for months.

Francisco D म्हणाले...

Not to belittle your photos, Althouse. They are excellent, but the sunsets and sunrises here in Southern AZ are spectacular almost every day.

We live near two mountain ranges (one to the east and one to the Northwest) and the colors that reflect off the mountains are amazing.

Mapburns म्हणाले...

Enough with the sunrises. Like others, mine are better than yours and it takes away from the other topics you post.

To quote Kant: "To take an immediate interest in the beauty of nature...is always the mark of a good soul."

traditionalguy म्हणाले...

Dark to light. Dark to light. Dark to light. 365 times 4.5 billion years. Yet every day it is a new art display. Hell of a Creator.

अनामित म्हणाले...

Love these pictures. Makes me want to move. Then I go out Christmas shopping and end up I. McSorleys drinking old time ale. So I know I am never going to leave.

tcrosse म्हणाले...

Sunrise: it's always in the last place you look.

Sal म्हणाले...

There's a large gaggle of snow geese on Lake Mendota today. Hopefully you'll see them tomorrow morning.

Ponnuru for SCOTUS! Remember the days when the Corner was readable?

Ponnuru for SCOTUS! Kath. J. Lopez would write to howls of knowing laughter throughout the land. He is just so smart.

And it was funny. IT WAS FUNNY DAMNIT! Kath. J. Lopez is insightful and courageous and ought to be respected more. And Jpod was always a decent sort of guy, not some hateful blob f nepotism who fell far, far from the tree.

Steyn, Derb, McCarthy, and others were all there for a bit, but they really let the place go to other-than-Heaven if you ask me.

stevew म्हणाले...

There aren't four tests for impeachment of the president, there is just one: high crimes and misdemeanors. National Review jumped the shark years ago. WFB is turning in his grave, he would love Trump.

Browndog म्हणाले...

All the trees are dead.

Sad!

On a somewhat serious note, ever seen ducks/geese frozen to the ice? I've seen it a few times, just after daylight. Sometimes it isn't until 10 O'clock or say they break free, flapping their wings ever so often until they break free.

Watching a flock of geese land on a lake with skim ice is the best 5 minutes you'll eve spend outdoors.

stevew म्हणाले...

Good point narciso, beautiful sunrises, indeed.

wildswan म्हणाले...

My view looks west but today I wedged myself into the only corner of the house where you can see the sunrise colors and there they were. Not the whole picture - trees, lake, birds - but the colors. Tonight I'm starting on excess with eggnog and whiskey. Tomorrow, a toy store for four last things and I just hope that I live through it without grabbing. Then a rigorous plan of campaign will take me through a church and four very hospitable houses in thirty-six hours. Merry Christmas everyone and Happy Holiday, if that's your pronoun, and Hanukkah Sameach.

Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who has granted us life, sustained us, and enabled us to reach this occasion.

Beautifully done, too. The funders wrote the message, or might as well have done so.

You wish you could duck duck go "basic html" but can't do it yourself?

Even now?

It is called a hyperlink, mostly as of a decade or two ago called a link.

It is really easy to do it. Like changing the oil in a 1990 Honda. They made it easy and cheap.

It is free to learn this very simple basic thing, easier to learn than to think about learning it.

(Wow just tried it "https://duckduckgo.com/?q=duck+duck+go+hyperlink&t=opera&ia=web" and they really don't provide it sipmly.)

Okay.

https://www.w3schools.com/html/html_basic.asp

This is a link

Scroll down to "Links" and copy and paste exactly what I copy and pasted above. You go to the website and copy and paste. Very simple. If you don't now on your device how to copy and paste that is common, coders get paid like Profs writing books get paid only for different reasons.

Then go to whatever website you like and replace "https://www.w3schools.com" with the url which is the thing in the website name that, if you click it, will often come up with something like "https://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=6329595&postID=8668370911529130226 and not just "www.blogger.comment.g" or "www.hillsdale.edu/Buckley" or something.

Now. If I may, please someone describe what that nasty AK ^^^ch did by not voting or voting present or whatever on Kavanaugh.

Nothing she did mattered right? She could have found God and resigned in Grace but of course she parlay-ed her daddie's power to win against a Republican, and Bernie-like, not be of the party she represents.

The water lily series were painted after his cataract surgery and after his painting eye changed from left to right. He refused to have the surgery on the left. His colors shifted during this period. His home has been beautifully restored in Giverny.

How can the Professor post such beautiful, glorious winter sunrise photos when our country is engulfed in a tumultuous constitutional crisis that is tearing the country apart!!!!

Ah Bay Area Guy--a beautiful sunrise means that you are alive for one more day, and that is a gift from the Almighty. (Especially when you are in your mid late 70's).

And Francisco D--I know Southern Arizona sunsets--they too are spectacular and a reminder that we are small and the world is great.

All of which makes the political piffle on the Potomac seem insignificant--a minor irritant and one that most people can ignore. There are things that are much more important in life.

Anyone remember Walter Williams telling Rush listeners around Christmas that his Xmas present to his wife was a tall pole for pruning tree branches, or ice cleats to help her clear their house's sidewalks, cars and parking areas of all that nasty winter stuff?

How my brothers and I anticipated Christmas, even though we usually got short switches and used ashes, and had to share those!

So ever since the idiot TSA took my beloved Swiss Army Knife away I've been telling people how great it was and that I would get myself one for Christmas. The basic model that I got for $2.00 about 35 years ago--and which was the finest and most useful tool I've ever owned-- is now about $16.00.

My wife and I were out this afternoon and went to all the trouble to go to a store (sorry Amazonian Althouse) and find one; I got four-- one each for wife, son, and brother. Oh, to add to all the other great and thoughtful gifts I've stashed for each of them. Of course.
