If it’s work in a loving relationship then maybe you’re not doing it right.
Under the screws like a Rabbit theory, if the woman initiates sex, does that mean the man is doing the sex work for no capital exchange?
Let’s see, I do the plumbing work, the very basic electrical work, the landscaping work, the car work, the snow removal work, a substantial bit of the cooking, cleaning, and dog care work, plus the direct deposit of the paycheck into the joint checking account at the bank work — all for no capital exchange. Plus coming up with most of the jokes. Hard work and no pay. I must be a loser to have agreed to that. Have to go now and make coffee and cook my wife breakfast like I do every Saturday.

IOW, the prostitute who wrote the article thinks prostitution is Special, but it's really just another job.

Holy crap! I am being way underpaid and cheated.
I do the work of a prostitute, short order cook, pastry cook, chef, dietician to my diabetic spouse, house cleaner, gardener, seamstress, decorator, secretary, bookkeeper and tax consultant. Sheesh. At least my kids are grown so I'm not an unpaid nanny anymore and I'm not working as a financial advisor either.
Maybe I should sue for back wages? Go on strike?
But then again, as Barry up thread says. My husband is being exploited for all sorts of other jobs that I can't do or would have to hire a plumber....hmmmm wonder how young and cute that plumber might be....but.....NEVERMIND. I digress.
If you consider the quid pro quo of a loving relationship as work or keep score on who is doing what and whether you are really really loving it or being exploited, I suggest you chuck it all and join a religious cult or become a nun.

"Every woman is expected or pressured...."
It used to be that standardized tests had idiot answers - any answer that contained all, always, never, was wrong and could dismissed without wasting time on it. I have to assume that they don't do that anymore?
Something tells me once all these personal things (sex, housework, smiling at other people) are monetized, these people still won’t be satisfied.
They won’t be happy in their personal lives (sex, relationships) or with the economy (selling sex and relationships)
In fact, they seem like empty people with bad ideas seeking mostly to control or be controlled
Liberation ain’t freedom, ya moron.
They forgot “filmmaker.” Everybody is a goddam “filmmaker.”
I’m beginning to think the prison system should hire a serial killer for those on death row. You could pay them a fraction of what it costs. And to keep the serial killer interested in the mundane work, set the death row inmate free and have the serial killer (s) work in commission, just like car salesmen (not that I’m equating car salesmen to serial killers...).
I really don’t know what is parody or real, anymore...
"They forgot “filmmaker.” Everybody is a goddam “filmmaker.”"
In a more literate era, the term of art was "unpublished fiction writer".

As I've noted before, the "women's pages" (yes, that's what they are) articles like this that you blog always look really familiar - because they are. They're endlessly recycled content from the 1960s. The "prostitutes have special insight into sexual relationships, because traditional (aka oppressive to women) male/female relations are really just prostitution, anyway" analysis never gets around to revealing any special insights - and it can't, because its one "insight" doesn't require doing "sex work" to attain, and there are people in other fields who have far more interesting things to say about it than hookers.
Over time the content has gotten more pretentious and larded with woke buzzwords, though.

Serious Question:
Shouldn't our Beloved Professor Althouse be posting her thing about how:
"If You EVER Have Sex With Your Partner, When You're Not IN THE MOOD... You're a WHORE!"
she used to post that quite frequently. Professor? Is this a test?
Ann Althouse said...
"My position is that people should only have sex when there is love in their hearts."
So a woman loves a man very much but does not want to have sex with him. He would enjoy sex with her if he didn't know she didn't want him sexually. She offers to give sex purely out of love, but truthfully says she does not like the sex itself. He loves her too. Should he accept her offer? I say no.

You would think that sex workers, what with their superior knowledge and technique, would go on to have happy, enduring marriages.
"Every woman is expected or pressured in heterosexuality to do the labor that sex workers do, but not every woman is a sex worker..."
I take this to mean that such expectations or pressure don't happen to women in lesbian relationships.
Like, there's never a time when one woman wants to just eat ice cream and watch TV, but her lesbian partner wants to scissor furiously.
That never happens.
If you're having to use a 12-inch urethane dildo to get the party going then at least one of the two is getting close to 'sex worker' territory.

Reducing yourself to an article of commerce to be sold and bought for the crass gratification of others is hardly empowering or dignifying.
What was interesting during the recent hearing before the D.C. Council on whether to legalize prostitution in the District was how the vast majority of advocates were from the trans community -- almost entirely men who wanted to sell themselves to others as women.
And they not only wanted to legalize the marketing of human flesh for the persons being sold, but for their pimps too. They wanted to legalize an industry where sex discrimination in the workplace was an endorsed feature, not a wrongful act.
So a man loves a woman very much but does not want to support her financially. She doesn't really give a shit what he wants. He offers to provide support purely out of love, but truthfully says he does not like doing so. She loves him too. Should she accept his offer?
I’m a documentary filmmaker and performance artist,
Well, I'm a scholar and a philosopher! Just like everyone else.
How bizarre: wives area mimic of a whore. This is exactly wrong, like saying that a woman's lover is a mimic of her cuckold of a husband.
Trust me on this, it takes lots of effort, smarts, creative ability and plain stubbornness to write a 106 page script. Selling it is even harder.

And whores who deliver anything other than actual sex don't get paid.

Every woman is expected or pressured in heterosexuality to do the labor that sex workers do, but not every woman is a sex worker.
She lets lesbians off the hook. Lesbian sex is pure fun? That sounds like a myth ready to be debunked.

Sex can be a vehicle for self-expression and it can be a theater; sex doesn’t have to be serious, and sex can be anything
Two more old stereotypes: a whore is any woman who likes sex "too much," and prostitutes eventually come to hate men and hate having sex with them. The first is long since discredited and discarded. I don't know about the second.
I think that makes me two narcissist's cancelled off-Broadway production.

The Washington Post also has up today an editorial about how Ralph "Coonman" Northam -- the black-faced, moon-dancing Democrat governor of Virginia who either wore Klansmen outfits or associated with such folks -- has survived being a blatant racist, and one that is clueless about his deep-seated racism. How? By pushing a lot of progressive causes.
And in response, the Dems who had rather lamely called for his resignation promptly whored themselves and their principles to go along with him instead.

You lost me at 'activist'. They are all hyphenated activists these days. They must be taught that in their schools. Whatever else you do, you must be an 'activist'.
Tedious and vapid.
Whatever happened to "a labor of love"?
Whores, like this woman, aren’t just paid for sex, they are paid to leave after the act is completed as well. Whoring is transactional, being a loving spouse is a lifelong partnership. To compare the two is to be of diminished intelligence, emotional and intellectual.
and what about the SWERF's ?

Honestly ladies, the modern relationship deal has become overwhelming one-sided in your direction. Men are expected to do all they ever did plus a bunch of new stuff we really do not like and is not our nature. At the same time, you are now free to take our traditional jobs and our places in all the best roles if you want, and even get preferred treatment at robbing us of those things that gave us purpose and identity. After accepting that bad deal with you, you can now leave us at any moment for any reason and take half our stuff with you. You can accuse us of all manner of atrocities and be believed with no evidence, sending us to jail or professional ruin. Then we have to listen to our culture tell us that everything you do is heroic and everything about us is toxic. Now cry me a damn river about your modern plight, which you wanted, designed, and fight for everyday with no resistance from anyone. It really must be horrible for you.
I wish all I had to do was give you sex for that deal, because I could do that without much effort, and if I was the woman and you the man, it would be an order of magnitude easier for me.

An argument for public smoothing functions (e.g. welfare) for heterosexual and transgender relationships, but why stop with people? Animals are people, too.
This is the same apologetic theme used for [catastrophic] [anthropogenic] global cooling... warming... change. Adjusting for what we know, what we think we know, then what remains must be the truth. A weak argument, but plausible.
Also an apology for exoneration rites.

No. Sex workers are, by and large, damaged goods.
Most prostitution is not a Pretty Woman movie.
In my long life I have noticed that in most long-term relationships the partners pretty much deserve each other, but there are also an awful lot of relationships where one partner who seems lucky to be with the other partner.
When I think about it it seems that, in the relationships where one partner seems luckier than the other, it is 50/50 with the man being the lucky partner half the time and the woman being the lucky partner half the time. And, over the years, in most of those relationships, things even out over time.
But really who knows the details of any one else's life? For example, there is the question of asymmetrical kneecaps ---
(asymmetrical kneecaps) is a reference to an early internet meme - apparently some poor slob wrote that a certain actress might look pretty but she had asymmetrical kneecaps, and the slob was mocked for years as an obvious gamma male for thinking that such a thing could make a difference to a man with a normal level of testosterone.
It does seem that the term "activist" is being used rather generously these days. To my ear, it's a euphemism for someone who doesn't have a job.

Pretty funny. There used to be a commenter here who explained why he did not date "women from America". I forget who and the reasoning but the same guy also had an asymmetrical kneecap reason for not dating while in college..
"I think sex workers are strangely more equipped, though, to ponder the problem of romance, because we sell sex and love as our job/"
No you don't sell love. You are selling your body and a service Your market is the most self centered, debased, cruel and ugly.
This job debases you. And until you leave, you may never know true love, charity, kindness... of grace.
In fact, This article is nothing more then an advertisement for your industry.
"Every woman is expected or pressured in heterosexuality to do the labor that sex workers do, but not every woman is a sex worker. I think sex workers are strangely more equipped, though, to ponder the problem of romance,"
Their perspective is skewed, which is why one of them might believe that first sentence. Normal, non-bought sex does not have this rigid woman-give-man-receive dynamic. If anything, sex workers are specially unfit to tell others much of anything about romance.
To my ear, it's a euphemism for someone who doesn't have a job.
Oh, they, "sex workers", have a job, albeit trans-social. There is a market for prostitution, pornography, et al.
Normal, non-bought sex does not have this rigid woman-give-man-receive dynamic
Exactly. Equal in rights and complementary in nature. As mature human beings, we reconcile. Sometimes more (e.g. pregnancy). Sometimes less (e.g. household tasks).
If sex can be anything, then anything can be sex. Not sure I'm ready to go that far.

At the linked article Ms Rabbit is quoted as saying "I do think that romance, like all things is tainted by capitalism." That seems to be a fey pronouncement to me. What her understanding of "capitalism" may be is quite unclear. How does capitalism "taint" all things. Does she mean that capitalism is, like gravity, every present in all human activity? I would agree with that. But "taint" seems to be negative, like "stain", rather than "inherent" that is more neutral and potentially positive.

Gilbar, you asked for it.
Now, women want it all.
To have a mother career AND put the child's needs behind her own outside-provider career
This is the fallacy, the big lie that has been fed to young women. Promising that you can have it all. All on your own. The truth is that you have to give up some things in order to get others. Always. Every single day.
You can't have it all. No one can. You can have some of those things...motherhood, a career, happy family. ....BUT even so and most importantly you can't have it all, all at once. Maybe one at a time. Maybe a couple at a time. Maybe not any at all.
Choose which is most important. It is your choice as to what path you take. And remember you can't go back and UNchoose if you realize you made a mistake. Especially when it comes to having or not having children. Now...there are other people in the mix and not just your own selfish self. Children. Spouses.
Feeding young women this lie only serves to make them unhappy with their lives. Feel inadequate when the reality strikes.
An entire industry defined by two words:
Daddy Issues.
Most teen aged boys could do the job of a sex worker with one hand tied behind their back.
Why the euphemisms? I thought in the rough, tough, 21st Century, where NO ONE is a prude, we call a spade a spade. Sex worker = prostitute = whore. She fucks for cash.
Anyway, I have nothing against whores. Most of them are just lazy and amoral. But once again, its not enough to TOLERATE, we have to CELEBRATE. CF: Gays, lesbians, trannies, Queers, and in the future: polygamists.
The fact that every human interaction involves some kind of exchange is a pretty flimsy excuse for literally making all your relationships transactional. And no, doing so doesn't confer any unique insights on non-transactional relationships. Quite the opposite: you probably wouldn't know a non-transactional relationship if one reared up and bit you on the ass (for which you'd charge $50).
DBQ nails it
It's not work if you're good at it.

They will invent a new kind, or redefine it to something they can celebrate.

Daniel, your father was probably a good guy but he was wrong.
