"A Texas man says his 7-year-old isn’t transgender. Now his custody fight has reached the governor’s office."

WaPo reports on a story that has been getting attention in conservative media, notably in this tweet from Ted Cruz yesterday:

From the WaPo article:

It’s a question that has divided the Coppell, Tex., parents — on how Luna, who was named James at birth, should be dressed to school and wear their hair. On whether the child should receive gender-affirming care, which could eventually lead to medical treatment to delay puberty. On which parent should get to live with the twins, and who should have a say in decisions over their health.

At least one of those conflicts was resolved on Tuesday, as a jury in Dallas effectively granted [the mother Anne] Georgulas sole custody of Luna....

But as [the father Jeffrey] Younger turned the parents’ fight into one over irreversible medical procedures, experts on health care for transgender children told The Washington Post that Georgulas’ approach to the child would not involve any kind of surgery or hormones for years.

“Many people wrongly assume that prepubescent transgender or gender-diverse children will receive medical interventions,” Katherine Kuvalanka, a social work professor at Miami University in Ohio, said in an email to The Post. “The only interventions for young children is affirmation and acceptance for who they are.”

In its 11-1 ruling, a jury all but gave Georgulas the right to sign off on any medical and psychological decisions. If a judge uphold that ruling on Thursday, the verdict would end a bitter, two-year saga between the parents, who had their brief marriage annulled over their child’s gender identity, a case that wades deep into thorny, polarized and little-known questions about the impact of medical transitions on young children.

It all began, Younger says on his blog, on the twins’ third birthday, when Luna expressed a desire to be a girl....

Georgulas took Luna to see a therapist, who diagnosed the child with gender dysphoria — a mismatch between the gender assigned at birth and the one they identified with. From there, the therapist laid out steps on how to make the child feel affirmed, like letting Luna paint their nails and putting them in a dress, as the mother did when the twins turned 5....

“James presents as a boy with me and he presents as a girl with his mom,” Younger said to the website last month. “He gets dressed as a boy at his mother’s home and he comes out to me as a boy. That means that he’s comfortable as a boy at his mother’s home.”

Younger charged that Georgulas had been pressuring Luna to want to use female pronouns. He cut the child’s hair, put the child in boys’ clothes and continued call them James....
The parents fighting each other over this is an additional challenge for the child. What a terrible misfortune!

The right outcome is for both parents to refuse to push him in any direction and he can decide what more he wants to do when he's 18.

Based on virtually nothing but this story, I don't trust the father to not push him to be a boy, but that's less dangerous than my lack of trust in the mother to not get him hormone therapy for his 8th birthday and reassignment surgery for his 13th. The damage the father might do can be reversed. The damage the mother might do cannot.

The mother is also a pediatrician. I'm thoroughly confused how the boy knows he's a girl based on the fact that he likes dress and nail polish, except for we're also told girls and boys are the same and any differences in preference is primarily socialization.

We're socialized to like guns or dolls or nail polish and dresses, but clearly (to some) he has a medical issue that will one day require severing organs and hormone therapy.

Maybe he's just picked up on the fact that 70% of all pop culture is aimed at little girls and he identifies with Elsa, Rapunzel, Dora and so on because those are cool. Ironic to see the feminist doctrines backfire in making boys more like girls (who wish they didn't have a penis) rather than girls more like boys who allegedly rule the world.

Unless I'm misreading, WaPo is pulling a bait and switch. They cite random experts to the effect that the treatment wouldn't involve hormones, but NY Post reports that in this specific case the mother is actually pushing for hormone replacement therapy. "What a terrible misfortune!"

I will juxtapose this with a recent quote from Althouse regarding Elizabeth Warren:

"He knows — this imaginary man — he knows he lost the same-sex marriage fight years ago. But her (Warren) instinct was not to offer him a way to get along in a society where the law will not enforce his morality, but to taunt him about whether any woman would ever want him."

In the past Althouse has made mention about those against gay marriage being left behind by our advancing culture.

I have no issue with gay marriage, but such moments have stuck with me: our culture advances, but those in the brave new lead have put no interest into keeping the train on the rails, of defining what constitutes the new societal 'common sense'.

We have nebulous paeans to diversity, but do not seem to be able to distinguish between diversity and child abuse.

We have abandoned the dreams of girls in sports to support the fantasies of biological men.

We have abdicated the basics of vocabulary to not cause offense by those who live to be offended.

We have ardent feminists removed from social media for stating that being a women does indeed include biology.

We have seen other feminists make a mockery of their beliefs to accommodate to the progressives in the most patriarchal of little-girl ways.

We have watched the educated and credentialed make a mockery of science to square the circle for these beliefs that now seem to supersede all reason or context.

We have exchanged tolerance for forced approval by those who have been considered to "lose the fight" long ago.

But no one seems to be responsible; it is just a "terrible misfortune!"

Surely a corollary of Heinlein's "bad luck", that.

I am Laslo.

From columnist Janice Turner, writing in this morning's Times (of London):

For several years now a schism has been building within the LGBT community between Stonewall and those alarmed by its trajectory. This reached its logical end on Tuesday night with the birth of a breakaway group, provisionally titled the LGB Alliance.

Conway Hall in Holborn was full of distinguished lesbians and gay men: local government officers, a consultant psychiatrist, psychotherapists, academics, doctors, a BBC producer, film-makers. All once stood behind Stonewall. Indeed the broadcaster Simon Fanshawe was a founder member and the former American Express vice-president Kate Harris a major fundraiser.

Yet they believe that since 2015, when the charity incorporated trans rights into its remit, Stonewall has ceased to represent them. They say it endorses sexist stereotypes promoting the notion that a “butch” girl or a “feminine” boy is in the wrong body and needs treatment when most gender non-conforming children turn out, like them, to be gay.

Their first demand is that the Equality and Human Rights Commission investigates the advice Stonewall (which receives an annual £600,000 in government grants) gives to public bodies from councils to police. They say it misrepresents the Equality Act by replacing the legally protected characteristic biological “sex” with “gender identity”. From this alleged deceit has come gender-neutral school toilets, police recording male-bodied rapists as “female” or the NHS admitting self-identified trans women onto female wards. The LGB Alliance calls this “Stonewall Law” and plans to fight it.

This is what women now do with the miracle of motherhood? First they want control of whether or not the child survives in the womb, or is simply discarded as an unneeded organ, and now the want to control the child's gender post-birth?

Young boys love their mothers. It's the Oedipus complex. And this poor BOY will go along with this to please his mother. Cruz is right. It's court approved child abuse.

The Minnow Wrangler म्हणाले...

All of this gender theory nonsense has so many internal contradictions. Women are supposed to be kept safe from "rape culture" and yet they let male rapists who claim to be women into women's shelters and prisons. I agree with some of the other commenters, if the little boy is gay, just let him be a gay boy or junior drag queen or maybe he just likes to play dress-up.

"Gender stereotypes" are supposedly social constructs, but if a man wants to be a woman he is supposed to wear dresses, heels and makeup. How does that even make sense?

If a man or a boy wants to wear a dress or whatever that is fine with me. But why does that require hormones and surgery? Just wear a freaking dress, keep your genitals, I don't care, just don't ask me to pretend you are a woman.

Also women's sports are doomed.

Of course, there is no way to verify this account but it is sad. There is no academic research on the children of gay parents, let alone this sort of thing. There are a couple of publications with religious origins but few in conventional literature.

There are a few now but one wonders.

the parent-reported gender-typed behavior of boys, but not girls, significantly changed over time (i.e., boys' behavior became more masculine). Our findings have implications for researchers who study gender development in children and adolescents, particularly those who are being raised by 2 mothers or 2 fathers.

The closest I've come was the day when my favorite three-year-old took a liking to a pretty blonde doll in a toy store. He begged to have it. Are you sure, I asked. Yes! came the answer. So we took the doll home and put in the toy box.

He never touched that doll again, not once. I dropped it off at Goodwill the next year. Needed to make room for his Halloween costume, a flannel football uniform, complete with soft helmet, that caught his fancy at the same toy store.

First, a book review by Michael Anton, whop wrote "Flight 93 Election"

Self-published in June 2018, BAM quickly cracked the top 150 on Amazon—not, mind you, in some category within Amazon but on the site as a whole. This for a book with no publisher and no publicist, whose author is not even known. Sales have been driven, one suspects, by BAP’s largish (>20K) Twitter following. Legions of eager fans quote the book and/or post pictures of its cover in exotic locations and/or lying atop military uniforms, presumably their own. But I think this understates BAP’s influence. Beyond his own account, he has scores of imitators who ape his writing style and amplify his ideas. Others have imitated him more directly, self-publishing their own BAPish books, and BAP returns the compliment through generous cross-promotion.

The book is called "Bronze Age Mindset."

Subsequently, Claremont has added a response by the anonymous author

Since at least 2015—but in fact from before Trump ever came along—there has been a tremendous intellectual disturbance or ferment online, among both the right and the left, that has escaped the notice or surveillance of the mainstream media, the literary and pundit-political establishment, and all those who imagine themselves gatekeepers of public taste and opinion. Trump’s campaign beginning in 2015 brought this countercultural phenomenon to view of the authorities, who have been struggling to understand it and contain it ever since

Both are pretty interesting reading for those who might want to know what the next generation, at least of boys, is thinking.

His mother pressed him to pick another name. If James is capable of asserting a permanent identity as female at age 3, then why did the mother refuse to change his name to Starfire? Is he not capable of also changing his name to Starfire? Is it possible (sarcasm) that at age 3 he was playing with all kinds of identities and was more interested in being a superhero than in being a woman?

To me this is so odd. Five or so years ago the feminist zeitgeist was that gender was a bogus social construct forced upon the population by the evil patriarchy. Given this why would someone cut their dick off in order to better align themselves with a bogus social construct forced upon the population by the evil patriarchy?

No one has ever been been assigned a gender at birth. The biological sex of a child is usually identified long before birth these days. "

Not only that, no one ever has been assigned a gender at birth. Ever. A child's sex is observed and recorded. That's it. There is no assignment.

Doing so places them at the apex of the victim hierarchy able to win all debates according to the left's framework. Becoming a hero to the left brings a sense of community to people whose entire life centers around being an outsider.

Over time they'll learn a sense of community driven in this way is ephemeral and fleeting which is why so many trans regret their transitions. Leftism works for the same reason other cults do.

Tom, you're missing the point.

The boys were made with Dad's sperm, but someone else's eggs.

This bitch is destroying the life of a boy who is her adopted son, not her biological one.

The court, and jury, from Dallas, ruled agains the actual biological father to give the boys over to the evil scum of an adopted mother.

THAT is what people are commenting on here.

I think the moral of this is that "city residents are insane, even in Texas."

"I would like to know the credentials of a therapist who would diagnose a three year old as suffering from gender dysphoria."

The problem with wacky "therapists" (thera-piss?) is seldom a lack of credentials. Obtaining credentials requires time and money, not talent. The root problem is the lack of any objective standards for therapists: that is, the inability to measure and judge the therapist's work product.

In many fields there is some sort of objective judgement of the practitioner's competence, but in this area there is none. And in the absence of any evidence to confirm therapists' basic competence, it is hardly surprising that the "therapy" offered by many is of little value. Unless the "value" is negative (e.g., "recovered memories"), it may be possible for outsiders to see just how destructive the "therapy" was.

And then there's the other root problem, which is courts' routine contempt for father's contributions (other than money, of course). Is it really necessary that when parent's wishes are in conflict, that (for pre-pubescent children especially) it is almost always the mother's wishes that count as courts almost inevitably regard her as the primary parent. Courts might note that resident fathers are particularly important for boys to flourish, yet there surely are few judges who would be willing to admit this.

So, if therapist and mother decide it's necessary to destroy the boy in this boy in order to save the child, and even if the therapist does actually have very fine credentials, must a reasonable person just accept this as "science"? Or might one reference the absence of objective measures of the quality of the work done by this and practically all other therapists?

If a field lacks any objective measure of quality, why would I trust its output?

Unless I'm misreading, WaPo is pulling a bait and switch. They cite random experts to the effect that the treatment wouldn't involve hormones, but NY Post reports that in this specific case the mother is actually pushing for hormone replacement therapy. Is WaPo actually contradicting NYP? Or are they just muddying the waters by abstracting away from the particulars of this situation.

You can read the court transcript here.

It does not say the mother is "pushing for hormone replacement therapy". It says instead that somewhere between the ages of 8 and 11 it is recommended that the child would be evaluated for hormone suppression to pause puberty.

Tom T. म्हणाले...

Greg, no one anywhere considers a donor-egg child "adopted." There's no adoption proceeding, the donor never has any parental rights, and the gestational mother is legally the mother for every purpose from day 1. The donor and the parents likely don't even know each other's identities. Focus on what the parents are doing now and in the future, and set aside your queasiness that those children didn't arrive in the typical way.

At least not until genetics matter. Perhaps the child wants to know her lineage, both her father and mother. Then it's who was the womb bank, who was the sperm depositor.

Greg the class traitor म्हणाले...

You don't get it. I have no issue with the boys. No one here is going after the boys.

We're going after the "mother". The sadistically evil creature who is fighting to destroy the life of one of the boys, in order to advance her on deranged desires.

The fact that she has no genetic connection to the boy, and the father does, matters in this case.

Someone up above mentioned Solomon. In this case, like Solomon's most famous one, we have two people. For one, this is their child. For the other, the poor innocent child is just a way to score points.

There were only three news agencies present throughout the trial: LifeSiteNews, The Texan, and Channel One (a Russian news agency). After the jury ruling [Monday], the public outcry has been immense.

Why was Channel One there? My guess is that they were feeding the Russian desire for titillating information about Western decadence. The judge has apparently awarded joint conservatorship to both parents this morning, requiring both to agree to hormones etc etc. As is so often the case, lamentably, the LSN article is rather incoherent in a couple of places.

The boy should be permanently removed from the mother, what she is doing is child abuse - trying to permanently alter the boy's physiology long before he can fully understand what the mother is pushing. Puberty is neither a medical condition nor a disorder - it is a normal part of growth and development, there is absolutely no medical reason to interfere with it.

From the slippery slope department, if a boy this age can determine his "gender", surely there's another judge out there somewhere who will rule that if kids can pick their gender, they can also use it as well.

Boys are boys, girls are girls, and all previous and future generations should rightfully condemn this one for being unable to grasp so basic a truth.

Jamie म्हणाले...

I was discussing this case with my husband yesterday. I've decided that the "sorrowful but brave" determination that a woman may make to "support" her child's "determination" that xe is trans is the new Munchausen by proxy. Before, you had to make your child sick or kill xim (hang on, there's no "xim," right? "Xer"?) in order to qualify; now all you have to do is destroy xis or xer or whatever's identity. Your Woke Points go through the roof and you have a living child to show for it.

For the moment, at least.

At one point, some upper-class mothers fed their babies sugar water rather than breast milk because breastfeeding was so declasse (and wet nursing was just gross, to them - they were being Good Moms by making sure they're babies' mouths never touched one of those icky breasts). Their children were, of course, malnourished. We now understand that these mothers were going for the Woke Points of their day - the public acknowledgment that they were better than the poor and/or savage women. These horrible trans-obsessed mothers who purport to divine their children's True Identity in toddlerhood will, I sincerely hope, soon and widely be seen as the Points-whores they are. And believe me, I don't use that word lightly.
