That was awesome. Beautiful. My favorite Dead song. Loved the harmony of the Chicago children’s choir toward the end. And David Crosby looks pretty good. Glad he’s still around.
I loved the video of The Weight. I like this almost as much. Both songs mean a lot to me. Simple beautiful music. Nothing particularly profound in the words - just soothing vivid images. "I pulled in to Nazareth. Was feelin' bout half past dead." "If I knew the way, I would take you home." These aren't the greatest renditions in the world, but I find the videos of people all over the world singing and playing very comforting.
"Reach out your hand if your cup be empty, If your cup is full may it be again, Let it be known there is a fountain, That was not made by the hands of men."
... but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
Well people and they are accountable at the end, now if they using black sabbath or ozzie isborne it Would be more concerning, but were ultimately talking about a dionysiam pagan spirit, but i really cant much get agitated over this
The local alternative radio station does a fundraiser ukulele concert each year. At the end, they bring out 25+ ukulele players to sing this, “our generations campfire song”, together.
Completely unrelated, apple suggests useless rather than ukulele.
I thought the lyric was "There was a guild of of cannonballs, their motto is 'don't tread on me'", so I may be the only person who looked at our familiar poster here and thought, "I know where he got that name!".
Great song and great version. It's fun to play on the guitar, was the first song I was able to play and sing.
Lovely way to wake up.
40 degrees at 4:30am today, which is 30 degrees cooler than the mornings the last couple of weeks in Cinque Terre. Italy. Good to be home, nah, great to be home. It's fall in northeastern MA, though gonna top 80 this weekend if the weather people are right.
In her clean up of the blog, another casualty. The insane Stephen Cooper. Don’t blame Althouse for her concern that her blog had been turned into a San Francisco street scene with all the crazies who had begun taking over the place. Who have we lost now? Fen, Inga, Ritmo, Chuck, Cooper, quite a few other trolls whom I just scrolled over, routinely... Don’t like the delay of moderation but don’t see any alternative.
etbass - no loss, I am happy when someone keeps the conversation on track, even if my contributions are lost ! The part of the conversation I started related to a couple conversations I had in the 70s with parents of children who had been led into the destructive and exploitative drug scene by very selfish members of the Grateful Dead fan base.
Sort of like if there were a Richard Wagner fan comment thread and someone said, well, he wasn't all that good for the Jews and gypsies and homosexuals, was he? and everyone piled on and said well what does it matter? We love Rhinegold melodies! And aren't there Bible verses condemning people like Cooper who criticize others?
Deleting my comment and the replies was no loss to me.
Narciso at 10:07 --- Why did Geico hire the gecko?
Because people don't like to think about insurance, and geckos wake people up at a moment when insurance is being discussed?
If Geico did not care about insurance they would never have hired the Gecko.
Taz was just commedia dell'arte, the gecko (voiced by someone who you would never think of as gecko-like outside a Geico commercial) evangelizes on behalf of insurance truth.
The Grateful Dead do not need as much praise as they get, you know that, I know that, and for some people they are still like a false idol, which is worse than buying the wrong insurance.
Well...I guess I'll be the cynical voice in the morning. I love 'Ripple'. One of my favorite Dead tunes. But this version didn't do it for me. By the time it got to the Chicago Children's Choir it was sounding more like the Coca Cola 'I'd like to teach the world to sing..' It's not going to change the world.
I hope good things for everyone. But...Jerry Garcia's voice on the original Ripple is the way to hear that song.
Have a nice Friday. I hope the stinkin' Badgers rip up Michigan.
I have never heard a note of the Grateful Dead's music that I ever needed or wanted to hear again. Vaporous, tuneless musical smog, and you can't dance to it, (as proved by all those who danced to it).
Is it cultural appropriation to appropriate the methods of capitalist propaganda in the service of the touchy-feely shared belief that music has the power to break down boundaries and overcome distances between people even though the capitalist propaganda has the same ability to break down boundaries and overcome distances between people while also educating those people about delicious and refreshing Coca Cola?
@SeanF, mathematically, sure. But the Brewers' remaining games are all against relatively weak opponents playing out the string. That's why I don't see sufficient losses in the Brewers’ remaining schedule for anyone to catch them. (I also note that the Cubs, while close, have 6 more games against the Cardinals.)

Great song. Great rendition.
Fantastic.
Here is the Dead's bassist Phil Lesh at age 78 playing Ripple with his band.
Joy.

My favorite Dead song. I’ve specifically asked for this song to be played at my funeral.
"Reach out your hand if your cup be empty,
If your cup is full may it be again,
Let it be known there is a fountain,
That was not made by the hands of men."
... but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
There's a river flowing
From a pure and crystal stream
And it carries my heart along...
Carries me all my days.
And I know
It will lead me home.
The lyrics always put me in a subjunctive mood.
Yeah, now I’m totally playing it at my funeral.
There used to be this amazing thing called a road.
But bitches felt being angry dumb cunts was better.
Roadbuilders bowed down to God with thanks and praise.

Rev 12:10 seems relevant, looking from the outside of whatever's going on between stephen cooper and the Grateful Dead...
Going to see Dead and Company Halloween night at Madison Square Garden.
They've been playing this as an encore.
He did go tasmanian devil.
I've never heard this song before. It was lovely.
It was a metaphor.
You think you are the only worthy to speak the truth, not st. Francis, not chrysostom not a 100 others, well that is recipe to make beleavers stumble.
Great Hunter/Garcia composition.
When hippies make music, I'm happier. When they try to run my country, I'm less so.
It's the song, not the singer. Beautiful.

No honest observer watches this.

My favorite Dead song is "Uncle John's Band".

I love this time of year.

This was one of my In-Laws favorite music videos. It reminds me of a Don Draper Coke commercial.
PJ: Are there enough losses in the Brewers’ remaining schedule for anyone to catch them? I don’t think so.
Looks like Chicago, Washington, New York, and Arizona could each still catch Milwaukee.
Blogger stephen cooper said.....for some people they are still like a false idol, which is worse than buying the wrong insurance.
How do you know Yahweh isn't a false idol? Allah is a false idol and he's the same guy.

Just the song for sitting 'round the funeral pyre.
Agree with Cook.

No.
How do you know Yahweh isn't a false idol?
Here's a handy chart.
Fantastic version of that great song and the video concept is cool too. Thanks!
A great start to my Friday. This is definitely going on my blog.
"Residents disgusted by offensive flyers posted throughout Winchester"
The unnerving, disgusting, terrible, upsetting flyers were 8x11 sheets of paper saying:
Islam
Is
RIGHT
About
Women
Here's the not-hilarious part:
"Police say they are still investigating the reports to determine if any laws have been broken."
Robert Hunter's lyrics are as much a part of the Dead as any of the musicians.
Cookie,
I agree (though not about the dancing since I can’t dance).
The Dead always left me cold.
PS Same for the Doors.
As was pointed out on "The Weight" thread, for those so inclined, this could be condemned as cultural imperialism and/or cultural appropriation.
Because there is a big tension (even a contradiction?) between "we are all part of the human family" and "keep off my cultural lawn".
"Police say they are still investigating the reports to determine if any laws have been broken."
Officer Titania McGrath on the case!
An even better example of cultural appropriation/cultural imperialism is Playing for Change's All Along the Watchtower.

Aside to Althouse - sorry to go off topic, even for the Brewers. I mistook this for a café.
First time I heard this song was on my first acid trip. I will never forget it.
Playing For Change (PFC) is a movement created to inspire and connect the world through music, born from the shared belief that music has the power to break down boundaries and overcome distances between people. The primary focus of PFC is to record and film musicians performing in their natural environments and combine their talents and cultural power in innovative videos called Songs Around The World. Creating these videos motivated PFC to form the Playing For Change Band—a tangible, traveling representation of its mission, featuring musicians met along their journey; and establish the Playing For Change Foundation—a separate 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to building music and art schools for children around the world. Through these efforts, Playing For Change aims to create hope and inspiration for the future of our planet.
Brilliant. Wonderful. What's with all the crabby people?
