The Justice Department has decided against prosecuting former FBI Director James Comey for leaking classified information following a referral from the department’s inspector general, sources familiar with the deliberations told Fox News.

“Everyone at the DOJ involved in the decision said it wasn’t a close call,” one official said. “They all thought this could not be prosecuted.”

Comey penned memos memorializing his interactions with President Trump in the days leading up to his firing. He then passed those documents to a friend, Columbia University Law Professor Daniel Richman, who gave them to The New York Times. Comey admitted to that arrangement during congressional testimony.

After the fact, the FBI classified two of those memos as “confidential.”Comey penned memos memorializing his interactions with President Trump in the days leading up to his firing. I am curious about rhhardin’s opinion on the way women are presented in Coen Brothers movies. Think of Burn After Reading where the plot revolves around getting lovers to get her the money she needs for a boob job, or A Serious Man, which gets women perfectly, I think, and men. You couldn’t imagine a woman saying the things the men say, or a man saying the things the women say. I think they nail women perfectly, with just the right amount of both loving respect and mild contempt.

It's one think to risk losing a customer when you have a superior product and can probably win that customer back. It's another when your product is no better, or even inferior to, the product to which you sent that customer.

Bad movie watcher is always on the prowl for technical errors so then he can brag to acquaintances his superior superciliousness

Ah, but technical errors about guns are truly bothersome.

In "Tombstone" Val Kilmer's Doc Holliday fires three times with his double barreled shotgun, never reloading.

In numerous westerns set in the 19th century, but notably the gunfight in "Open Range," the hero shoots a single action Colt revolver without cocking it. (And don't get me started on the professional shootist in the derby hat who allows an armed man to approach him without drawing his own gun.)

Hardly anyone counts to six with their revolver, the notable exception being Clint Eastwood as Dirty Harry. "You're thinking did he fire six shots, or only five." In "Open Range" Costner's character fans off at least seven shots from his six-shooter -- after he's already fired it five times.

In the 19th century six shooters weren't the only guns that needed to be cocked before they would shoot. Viggo Mortensen's character, Everett Hitch, doesn't appear to cock his 10 gauge shotgun before firing it in "Appaloosa." Yes, throughout most of the 19th century shotguns had external hammers that had to be cocked before the gun would fire. Interestingly, considering that he found a way to make a double barreled shotgun fire three times, Val Kilmer's Doc Holliday does remember to cock his shotgun before making the "Cowboys" regret their threats against the Earp brothers.

"Open range" repeals the laws of physics -- a load of buckshot hitting a bad guy knocks him off his feet and backwards about four or five feet, but Robert Duvall's character easily handles the shotgun's recoil. Too bad about Newton's Third Law.

And that's just Westerns.

Meanwhile, here in Wisconsin...

The Republican leader of the state Assembly said he won't let a Democratic lawmaker who's paralyzed from the chest down call into meetings and slammed him for "political grandstanding" on the issue.

But Speaker Robin Vos wrote in a letter to Rep. Jimmy Anderson Thursday he would seek to make a videographer available for public committee hearings and consider letting members vote via paper ballot rather than in-person.

Anderson, of Fitchburg, has sought to be able to phone into committee gatherings, though chamber rules prohibit the practice, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported this week. Vos, R-Rochester, told the publication he didn't want to change Assembly policy in that arena.

Source

FWIW - Task forces for the Assembly are allowed to call into some meetings, and the state Senate allows for committee members to participate in meetings via phone. I've also heard that oftentimes these committee meetings last no more than 15-20 minutes, but am unable to find a cyper-source for that tidbit.

Jackie Brown had the best treatment of a woman finally too annoying, which was a commentary on nagging in general. Attention finally given to it by the solution.

I had an interesting reaction to Jackie Brown, comparable to a reaction I had of another movie released that same year, The Big Lebowski. I anticipated them both greatly, both by directors I had loved, Tarantino and the Coen brothers, respectively, and both after huge critically acclaimed films, Fargo and Pulp Fiction. On first viewing each movie, my reaction was lukewarm. Only on repeated viewings did I fall in love with those films. There is so much happening in each movie that it's simply impossible to catch it on a single initial viewing.

Well Jackie brown I'd derivative of Elmore Leonard whereas as pulp fiction is more original, probably more Jim Thompson than anything else, maybe Ross McDonald might have gotten there.

"World's first AI bar opens in London"

Probably going to suck. I used to frequent an airport bar in Minneapolis−Saint Paul International Airport, a frequent layover back when Northwest Airlines existed. At one point they decided they were going to get technological, and you could no longer just give your order to a waitress/bar tender. Instead, all of the seats had been outfitted with ipads from which you could order directly. It took me (and I'm pretty technically sophisticated) about a minute to navigate through the numerous menus to order a Bombay and Sapphire (with lime, an addition that required a couple of extra screens).

So, in other words, it took me about four times as long to order and receive a drink using the new technically efficient way then if I had relied on the old boring method of verbally giving my drink order, having the bartender make it and give it to me, and then go back and enter the order into a POS system to generate the bill.

The only realistic world-view is that of conspiracy theory.
We know without a doubt that we are not in the loop, we do not understand how or why or by whom decisions are made. We do not know what is going on, and the vast bulk of the information that is pushed to us officially or commercially serves only to further impede understanding. And this obfuscation is done with a purpose, and massive resources are dedicated to it.

Truth worth considering emerges in little bits from the cracks, that which leaks out, and is rarely remarked on. From this we (those equipped or so disposed to this) can try to construct, in the sense more of military intelligence trying to divine an enemies nature and intentions, some idea of current affairs.

This situation is not new nor is it limited to this country. This is simply the way of things among humans in complex societies.

Ehh...yes and no. A good story is important, but good craftsmen can make up for bad or weak stories. I imagine that The Fugitive was not a very impressive screenplay, but Andrew Davis managed to make an excellent film out of it. And a lot of Elmore Leonard works have been turned into pretty bad movies. Be Cool, Killshot, and The Big Bounce were all pretty unimpressive.

Ehh. I get your point but am still allergic to the notion of "conspiracy theories," since they more often than not are kind of creationist explanation for world events that tend to discount or leave out any notion of chance or differing motives operating under similar incentives. That the Bush administration or Mossad or both did 9/11 is one of the more popular conspiracy theories. As is the notion that the moon landing was fake. That mass shootings in places like Sandy Hook and Las Vegas were all false flags designed to take guns away. that AIDS and crack cocaine were invented by the US government to destroy the black community. These are all popular "theories" believed by a large number of people. But exactly how "realistic" they are?

In other important news of the day...

London Times, August 1 2019

'People should not kill mosquitoes that bite but give them a “blood donation” instead, a French animal rights activist says.

Aymeric Caron, 47, a television presenter and vegan, said animal lovers should allow the insects to bite, except, perhaps, in Africa, where they risked malaria.

“There is good reason to have a bad conscience if you kill a mosquito,” said Mr Caron in a video seen on an online animal rights channel. “One can consider that a blood donation from time to time to an insect who is only trying to nourish her children is not a drama.”

His words were denounced as proof that French animal rights activists, who have been responsible for a series of attacks on butchers and abattoirs in recent months, have fallen into the grip of a radical ideology.

Mr Caron’s video came as the “anti-specist” movement – a term for those who deny that humans are superior to other species – wrestles with the question of how to react to mosquito bites.'

'...Writing in Le Figaro, Paul Sugy, the editorialist, said Mr Caron’s video “offers a precious resume of the all the madness to which the social justice warriors of the animal cause want to submit us”.

Olivier Auguste, a commentator with L’Opinion newspaper, gave Mr Caron an ironic thank you for teaching him that mosquitoes were beings with “feelings” and “rights”, adding that when he died he wanted to be reincarnated as a female mosquito.'

That's fine, but is that what people mean when they say "conspiracy theory?" The notion that a small group was able to exploit systemic weaknesses sounds like the opposite of a conspiracy theory to me and is in fact the exact kind of explanation a lot of conspiracy theorists reject for what they consider naivety.

Then what exactly differentiates any theory from a "conspiracy theory?" I don't see how using that verbiage gets you anywhere. Perhaps it boils down to "you shouldn't believe something just because someone in authority told you it," which I think is true. But it's not really possible for any human to do. A certain amount of trust in the process and the honesty and integrity of some humans has to come into play. If you're in a car accident and a doctor tells you you need emergency surgery to save a life-threatening injury, isn't it rational to reject the advice until you've had the time to do the research yourself? I know next to nothing about operating a plane but put my life in the hands of strange pilots all the time, without knowing their skill level or the fact they be suicidally depressed to the point of wanting to take a whole planeload of passengers with them.

I am never sure any more what is inadvertence and what is advertence. What is accident, and what is intentional. I was impressed with Tulsi Gabbard’s performance the other night, esp with bringing the fight to Harris. Looks almost a POC, military war vet, officer, and by far the hottest candidate of the year. I thought that maybe a little money thrown her way might act a bit as a spoiler. Hadn’t gotten that far down the road in that direction, and all of a sudden her campaign ads started popping up for me. My question is what triggered Google to start feeding me her ads? I hadn’t typed or searched for her name. Just clicked on an article or two with her name in the title. Medicare aged white male conservative. And, yet, for that, they fed me her ads.

I like her as a spoiler, but decided not to contribute to her campaign. Right now, she seems to be working hard to be Joe Biden’s running mate. And would probably fit very well. He is decently good looking for his age. She is young and hot. Speaks better than he does, and, maybe as importantly, has a much better memory. He has a touchy/feely, almost pedo, vibe. She would counter this with her gender. And seems more than willing to do his wet work, as she did with Harris in the last debate. I think that he is going to have a hard time finding a better fit, and I think that both know it. And I really don’t want to help Biden, so no money for her. Everyone seems to think that he is a dunce. But he has traditionally had a lot of appeal in just the demographic that the Dems need most to bring back to their party if they want to win in 2020 - working class rust belt workers. Much more appeal than almost any other Dem in the race.

Right now, I think that the Dem nomination is Biden’s to lose. As I noted, he is the one candidate with a decent chance of plugging the holes that Trump punched in the Blue Wall in 2016. Most of the other top tier candidates are east coast/west coast elites who couldn't speak to this demographic if their lives depended on it. And I don’t see the Dems winning without flipping several of the rust belt states back in their direction. Right now, I expect him to mostly lock up the nomination by mid spring next year.

What I don’t see is either Michelle or Crooked Hillary steppingstones in to take the nomination in a brokered convention. Clinton is already a two time loser, everyone knows where her dirt is, and she doesn’t have the health to make another serious run at the Presidency. Michelle is an angry black woman. A lot of people really don’t like angry black women. And in her case, she has always been entitled. Her husband, only part black, was safe. Very safe. She isn’t. A lot of people really don’t want another four years of racial divisiveness, as would be the case with this angry black entitled woman running the country. Most any other Republican candidate would treat her with kid gloves. Not Trump. He was willing, last week, to hit Rep Cummings hard for his failed city, Baltimore, when Cummings tried to come after him for fake Russian collusion and hoped for impeachment. I would expect him to hit Michelle just as hard, if she accepted the nomination. So, she won’t. Their family is on track to get Clinton level rich, without the hassles of running the country.
