I am almost done reading Gates of FIre, a historical novel about the battle of Thermopylae. It is compelling reading. it is also incredibly gruesome. Gruesome but true. The commitment and bravery of these Spartans is amazing and inspiring.

Every month the treasury department issues a "monthly treasury report" on federal gov't receipts and expenditures. The top line report for the June report (issued in early July) is that "Trump deficits are close to $1 trillion". That is true. The 12 month total for July 2017 to June 18 is 985 billion (just short of 1 trillion). The facile explanation is that "Trump tax cuts caused the deficits." But actually gov't receipts are higher than ever: (for 12 month totals July to June ending in year...
2015 3.53 b 2016 3.61 b 2017 3.64 b 2018 3.69 b 2019 3.72 b.
The growing deficit is caused by the increases in spending
2015 3,89 b 2016 4.09 b 2017 4.34 b 2018 4.53 b 2019 4,71 b,
So as we get into a discussion of the debt limit and the size of the fed deficit, it would be reasonable to blame Trump administration as "big spenders" not as "tax cutters". I don't think there is anyone willing to blame the Trump administration for spending too much.
Let's not talk falsely now. The hour is getting late.
Yes. Santa Barbara is the best the California coast has to offer. It's southerly facing coastline and the mountains 8 miles inland makes it seem like it's an Hawaiian island. And it's better shopping than Rodeo drive. And the local Farmers bring in the best home grown Fruits and Vegetables on earth.
Santa Barbara's great. The beaches have tar, so have a rag and baby oil. Painted Caves is interesting. Cold Springs Tavern on Stagecoach road just past Camino Cielo off the 154 is a nice historic spot. Check out the Arlington Theater downtown, it's interior is like an Old Mexico Plaza at night, including stars. Lots of great hiking if you are into that. Devereux Lagoon and Coal Oil Point have lots of nice views and lots of interesting birds. Joes Cafe on State Street is famous for French Dip sandwiches and the stiffest cocktails in town.
Isn't it sort of amazing that the Left and the MSM spent the last couple of months before the 2016 election whining and complaining that Trump wouldn't accept the results of the election, and then have spent every second since the election not accepting the fact that Trump won?
I have gotten hooked on novels by Andrew Wareham , who is a sort of English WEB Griffin. Great detail about 17th and 18th century England. Military and naval. Better than CS Forester and I have not read the Maturin series.
Is anyone else reading “The Weil Conjectures: On Math and the Pursuit of the Unknown“?
@Althouse, thanks for the pointer. Amazon lets one look inside at selected pages, and the book seems delightful. I also looked up Simone Weil in Wikipedia, and now I'm going to have to read something of hers, too.
What I had been planning on doing was commenting on the latest foolishness from Ocasio-Cortez, where she claims that "no one would be heatbroken" to lose private insurance. Since I'm already on Medicare, and I know what it doesn't cover, I would be at a serious loss (or my doctors would have to quit the business) without Medigap coverage.
"I don't think there is anyone willing to blame the Trump administration for spending too much."
Me, me. Pick me! And infastructure spending yet to come. And Trumpcare. This is the biggest failure of the Trump admin. He did give it some lip service early on, but nobody really gives a shit it seems. Obama deserved criticism, and Trump does too. But anyone truly fiscally responsible has 0% chance of being elected to the Presidency.

It is set during the Treaty of Amiens, a one year peace between England and France and so our heroes are land bound without "work" and the first 3/5ths of the book are them wooing some posh sisters and one of their cousins with balls and fox hunts etc.. (The series has been said to be "if Jane Austin had been a sea captain). I almost gave up but when hostilities resume, we get one of the most exciting sea chase/battles I have ever read and the author introduces the wrinkle that really set me going. Not only is the good Dr. Maturin a top shelf, erudite physician but also a secret agent who hates Napoleon for being a tyrant!
So I thought, OK, the ending saved the book, but when I read a review of the third book, I learned that all that wooing and "icky" stuff in Post Captain was just introducing us to characters who will become very important and impacts throughout the rest of the series.

Rand Paul has made an issue of increasing Federal spending through the extension of the 9-11 victims compensation fund by stalling a vote on the bill. He wants to find some other Federal spending to eliminate as an offset for this bill's cost. Consistent of him and in general he's right to make such a demand, but by using this issue he's wrong. So have the democrat media realized that endorsing terrorism is a misstep yet?
They keep thinking Trump is making missteps like saying Leila Emli who goes by the fake name Ilhan Omar should go home.
These people don't see the train coming down the tracks.
