Remember God loves us all, the worst of us can be more AMAZING, in our efforts at charity and kindness and strength and bravery (well I score pretty low on 3 out of 4, but only 3 out of 4, I hope you do as well or better)

in our attempts at charity and kindness and strength and bravery any one of us can be MORE WONDERFUL IN THE EYES OF GOD AND THE HOSTS OF HEAVEN than the lilies of the valley, than the sparrows of the skies, than the greatest miracles of creation that do not have free will but which are beautiful because GOD LOVES TO MAKE BEAUTY IN PLACES WHERE THERE WAS NO BEAUTY BEFORE

As always, thanks for the nice pictures, pray for me and I will pray for you (or don't pray for me I will pray for you anyway, I have a soft spot in my heart for ALL THE ALTHOUSE COMMENTERS)

No spoilers, but "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" is painfully boring, painfully tedious and a waste of time and talent. There are only 2 good things: (1) nice shots of LA made authentically to look like 1969 and (2) Brad Pitt takes off his shirt and has amazing abs for a 55-year old man.

The rest is dreck.

The Dragon space craft docked with the ISS earlier today, and was ignored by everybody. A spacecraft built by a private company delivered a cargo to the ISS, using a previously used first stage and a reused Dragon capsule, and it was considered ho hum. Amazing times we live in.

The headlines about Pelosi saying THAT'S RACIST!!! seem a little counter-productive.
The networks also seem reluctant to show clips of the video that brought on that outburst from Trump.

I linked the video to start at the tail-end of Jeremy Corbyn's first question, such as it was. If you care to hear the incomparable Jacob Rees-Mogg, now Leader of the Commons and another old Etonian, back the video up about 20 minutes.

Elsewhere I saw that those who keep track of such things consider Palestinians to be "white" (which makes sense since Jews are now "white" and since they occupied the same area in olden times must share a good deal of the same DNA), and Representative Tlaib is thus "white" and probably should not claim the privileges of "color."
Iran and Aryan are also from the same root, so ...
It is just so hard to keep up!

If Joe Biden isn't as brain dead as Robert Mueller, he should prep for his next encounter with Kamala Harris at the next Left Party debate by watching her recent crazy video exchange with Meghan McCain on the Political View.

Hot Air has both the video and a transcript:

Harris: I’m Not In Favor Of Decriminalizing Illegal Immigration, I Just Won’t Treat It Like A Crime!

[Meghan] MCCAIN: You’re for decriminalizing border crossings, one of things people were [inaudible] at the debate. Do you agree with AOC that we should get rid of DHS altogether?

HARRIS: That’s not correct. I’m not in favor of decriminalizing, or not having consequence for — we have to keep — let me just be very clear. We have to have a secure border, but I am in favor of saying we’re not going to treat people who are undocumented and cross borders as criminals. That’s correct. That is correct. And what we’ve got to do is we cannot have any more policy like we have under this current president, that is about inhumane conduct, that is about putting babies in cages, that is about separating children from their parents. And we have got to have policies that is about passing comprehensive immigration reform with the pathway toward citizenship, shutting down these private detention facilities —

MCCAIN: Clarify this for me, though, because I find it confusing.

HARRIS: Yes, yes.

MCCAIN: I believe that if someone crosses over the border illegally, it’s illegal. And you would decriminalize it.

HARRIS: I would not make it a crime punishable by jail. It should be a civil enforcement issue, but not a criminal enforcement issue.

MCCAIN: Okay.

HARRIS: There should be — you know, you gotta play by the rules, but we can’t treat people like criminals.

https://hotair.com/archives/ed-morrissey/2019/07/27/harris-im-not-favor-decriminalizing-illegal-immigration-just-wont-treat-like-crime/

"Slow Joe" would probably be just as confused in addressing this topic as Harris.

Bay Area Guy said...

Harris is exactly where most Dems are: let's do everything we can to thwart border enforcement, but we're for secure borders.

The entire Dem party are liars who support open borders.

Parliament could probably stop Brexit, but the MPs would have to make a stand, and it would have to be bipartisan. Also, it isn't enough to vote against hard Brexit- they would have to vote to remain- that it the only way they could stop it, and there isn't nearly enough courage in the lot of them to do that. For now, I think Johnson is dead serious- either the EU returns to the negotiating table, or Britain leaves flat out.

Yancey Ward said...

And all of those consider ideas for stopping Brexit are complete pie in the sky, and I think they know that. They are trying to find a way to "Remain" where the voters don't figure out what they have done. There is a word for this- it is called stupidity.

Tarantino is hit and miss, but he swings from the heels. I thought Inglorious Basterds and Pulp Fiction were as perfect movies as I have ever seen, but everything else is fairly well described as a mess.

Of the other movies, I thought the Kill Bill films were the best outside the two I listed above- I enjoy them a great deal even though I thought ending was a big fail.

He didn't direct True Romance- it was directed by Tony Scott. He did write it, though.

Sure 'nuff...but I (probably incorrectly) still consider it one of QT's.

That Walken/Hopper scene could still be made today - if it was a Tarantino script. For whatever reason(s), he gets a free pass on all kinds of stuff. I don't think even any of that Weinstein crap spilled onto him, did it?

We talked about gaddafi. He kep them safe and is better than the leadership now. I wanted to do him but I just did a spic and I can't shoot two loads in less than an hour. The spic was hot. He wanted my phone and I was relluctant to fgive him but he complimented my guns

Yancey Ward said...

Well, to be fair, it is certainly more recognizable as a Tarantino film than it is a Tony Scott film (Top Gun, Days of Thunder, Crimson Tide, etc.). Indeed, if I didn't already know who directed it and didn't even know who wrote the screenplay, I would have guessed Tarantino without much hesitation, too.

I've been following the discussion of "trolls" and civility in the comments section. Today's (?) Washington Post has an opinion piece that is relevant to this discussion. Quoting from the article:

"the average Democrat believes that more than 40 percent of Republicans earn more than $250,000 per year. Meanwhile, Republicans believe that nearly 40 percent of Democrats are LGBTQ. How close are these estimates to reality? Not very. Just 2 percent of Republicans are doing that well financially, and just 6 percent of Democrats are LGBTQ. Getting basic facts about our neighbors this laughably wrong is pathetic enough. More alarming is the tendency to erroneously attribute extreme views and motives to the other side. The nonprofit organization More in Common recently released a report on the “Perception Gap” — the difference between what we think the “other side” believes and what they actually believe. The study found that average Democrats and Republicans radically overestimate the percentage of the other side that holds “extreme views.”

Ignorance of opponents’ motives leads to needless conflict through what psychologists call “motive attribution asymmetry”: the belief that I am motivated by love but you are motivated by hatred. Today, more than 90 percent of both Republicans and Democrats describe people in their own party as “honest,” “reasonable” and “caring.” Meanwhile, more than 80 percent in each party describe the other side as “brainwashed” and “hateful.” This is a major threat, but also an opportunity for countercultural leaders to disrupt our dysfunctional political culture. They can do this by spending time listening to their opponents, with a goal of understanding rather than outrage. They can publicly refuse to caricature and trash people with whom they disagree. They can assume the best, not the worst, about others — which has the virtue of being closer to the truth about the majority.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/youre-probably-making-incorrect-assumptions-about-your-opposing-political-party/2019/07/26/9f888f0a-a995-11e9-86dd-d7f0e60391e9_story.html?utm_term=.0a4dcc97281d

Back to comment by h: In the past, Althouse has called for commenters, and for those generally involved in personal or public discussions of controversial issues, to interpret the comments and actions of others in the most generous way possible; for example, if a person is wrong, that person can be deliberately lying, or can be mistaken. The more generous interpretation is "mistaken".

tim in vermont said...

“They can do this by spending time listening to their opponents, with a goal of understanding rather than outrage. “

Jonathon Haidt tried that and was drummed out of the party. Jordan Peterson would be a moderate Democrat were he American and not Canadian, or so it seems to me from reading his book, and you saw what they did to him.

I agree with you though, but it’s hard to assume that somebody is simply mistaken when they refuse to address counterarguments and simply repeat their point, no matter how thoroughly it has been eviscerated by other comments.

The web does focus on the crazy though, on both sides. I am sure rhhardin could explain why.

I like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. I rank it up there with Jackie Brown and Inglorious Bastards but not quite up to Pulp Fiction. I don't really care for the rest of Tarantino's movies. As always, the soundtrack is excellent; I particularly like the Jose Feliciano version of California Dreamin'. I liked the ending, as well, because it made me think about the ending of that decade and how different it might feel or be framed had it ended that way instead of the way it did. I'm actually going to see it again because I am pretty sure I missed some of the more nuanced stuff because I was a little distracted Friday when I saw it.

I can't consider any talk about racism, if my moral and intellectual betters puke out idiocy like this.

I saw a headline that talked about Harris having some grand plan to focus attention on getting Blacks into STEM. It came to me while watching black hoodlums throwing buckets of water on Police Officers. If you are raised to think its OK to assault officers of the law, you are not going to do well in STEM studies. I want to ask Harris what her program is to make sure all kids show up to school every single day?? Fed and well rested??? I don't know how to get better parents, but some white paper on STEM isn't it.

"the average Democrat believes that more than 40 percent of Republicans earn more than $250,000 per year. Meanwhile, Republicans believe that nearly 40 percent of Democrats are LGBTQ."

But these are both based in leftist disinformation. It's the left that tries to portray the Monopoly man as the average Republican. It's also the left that for years recited as mantra that 10% of the population was gay, etc., and that the only gays who oppose them are a handful of self-loathers. If you work within those numbers, you probably won't get to 40% of the party, but it easily carries you to 25-30%.

This happens over and over again: the Democrats overstate the numbers and loyalty of their constituent groups, come to believe that they're much bigger than they really are, and end up surprised on Election Day.

This story appears at Breitbart:

https://www.breitbart.com/national-security/2019/07/26/india-investigating-female-feticide-in-132-villages-without-girl-births-in-months/

It's a kind of a conglomeration of Indian and Australian news reports about villages in India where there were zero girl births reported over a period of months in which the number of boy babies born was somewhere north of 200.

It's not the usual kind of thing for Breitbart; at least not the usual kind of prejudices that many people expect, hate, or love about Breitbart. It is presented as unusually straight news.

I think I saw it front-paged at Drudge, but it is no longer there. It was the most shocking, disgusting thing I had seen in a standard news story in a very long time. I really wonder if it will gain wider traction in the U.S. news media. Or if it is such a strong anti-abortion, anti-Indian culture story that it will be buried.

So very interesting, that it exists as a Breitbart story.
