"'I Don’t Want an Exciting President'/Joe Biden makes his supporters feel safe, but nominating him is risky."

A NYT op-ed by Michelle Goldberg, which you probably feel you don't need to read because the headline says it all. In fact, I haven't read it, because that's how I feel. But I'm blogging it because the photographs at the link — by Damon Winter — are so eloquent and hilarious (or terrifying, if you're a Trump hater). You see the Biden crowd, and they look dull and inert. (Some of their dullness is the look of a person staring into an iPhone, and photographers will be able to catch people looking like that everywhere.)

ADDED: My son John blogs the Goldberg column and links to something I blogged on July 29, 2004:
Is anyone listening to the speeches at the Convention

who isn't listening through a filter of thinking about the way someone else would be hearing the speech? I think not. I think the someone else, for whom the speech was written and to whom it is delivered, is not tuned in at all. Everyone listening is either already a Kerry supporter hoping the speech will convince someone else or a journalistic observer analyzing whether the speech is the sort of thing that will have the effect on the target audience it is intended to have.

ADDED: My son John Althouse Cohen emails:
You wrote about how everyone watching the convention is imagining how the speeches will seem to someone else, even though it might be that none of those "someone elses" are actually watching the speeches. The same thing happened when Kerry won the primaries. Everyone was voting for him because they thought he would appeal to someone else. And those voters believed at the time that that was the politically savvy thing to do. But it was actually politically disastrous: if everyone was just voting for him because they thought someone else would like him, then NO ONE ACTUALLY LIKED HIM.

One problem is that if you're trying to choose the most "electable" person, I would imagine that you'd be likely to do it by process of elimination -- by ruling out all the candidates with obvious political liabilities. I think this is the number-one reason why Kerry won the primaries: he was the only candidate who didn't seem to have anything particularly wrong with him. Edwards was too inexperienced; Clark was a poor campaigner; Dean seemed kind of insane; Gephardt was too liberal; Lieberman was too conservative. So they choose the one candidate who has no qualities that would really make anyone hate him. The problem is that he also has no qualities that would really make anyone like him either.

What worries me about Biden — above and beyond policy disagreements — is that, in contemporary politics, the quest to find an electable candidate hasn’t resulted in candidates that actually win.

I've noticed this with movie trailers too. My wife and I watch trailers while searching Amazon & Netflix to pick a movie, and I often say to her after a trailer that I feel like we just watched the entire movie. It's both frustrating and satisfying because I don't want to waste two hours on something you can tell/show me in 2 minutes. But we also probably miss some enjoyable movies simply because the people responsible for the trailer told/showed us too much. Which, on reflection, is applicable to politicians and campaign managers and how they choose to present themselves to the public.

That points to a huge blind-spot in the worldview of Democratic primary voters. I know the media tried to pooh-pooh it all and hush it up, but it was clear during the campaign that there were a lot of Vietnam veterans who were viscerally disgusted with Kerry, and were keen to get that message out to the public any way they could.

The Press knew. They just didn't report on it...which is why the National Enquirer did. (Similar to what the MSM does or doesn't report on now)Per Wikipedia.."CBS News journalist, Bob Schieffer, asked about the allegations on Imus in the Morning, stating, "I believe that's a story that we will be avoiding, because it appears to me that there's absolutely nothing to it ... This seems to be just sort of a staple of modern campaigns, that you got through at least one love child, which turns out not to be a love child. And I think we can all do better than this one."[33] Mickey Kaus, a journalist at Slate, speculated that the lack of mainstream coverage was motivated by a desire not to harm Elizabeth Edwards, who was fighting cancer at the time. Kaus also considered the possibility of news organizations taking a "wait-and-see" attitude, pending the results of the Iowa caucuses.[34]"

"Former VP = Unelectable"

George H.W. Bush did it and Al Gore darn near did it and probably would have had he not tacked left and acted deranged throughout his campaign.

One difference and a big one, the VPs ran on the heels of the popular president they served under. Biden's skipping a term might be critical.

Biden will look a total fool in primary debates but there are a score of progressives who will divide the vote and Biden will always win each primary. It will be like it was with Trump and a bunch of normal Republicans. Most Republicans had Trump at the bottom of their choices but their top choices were divided ten ways. The people who liked Trump were more numerous than supporters for any of the other ten or so.

Kerry wan't lying, the story is he borrowed the medals he threw over the fence, he kept his medals, displaying them in his office years later.

Did the people Kerry "borrowed" those medals from know he was going to throw them away while pretending they were his??

The lie was Kerry pretending to discard symbols awarded to him in protest.

"I can no longer sit idle while this company commits one atrocity after another. As of this moment, my Asst Manager is tendering his resignation." - John Kerry

What a poser.

Althouse: I'm deleting all comments about the paywall. I know there's a paywall. We all do.

No, we don't. Nowhere do you warn us your link leads to a paywall. How about extending the courtesy of a warning so you don't waste OUR time. Or do you even think about people other than yourself?

Now, say something interesting and relevant. Don't be boring!!

When did you become such a censorous Nazi. Deleting 3 posts because we are "not allowed" to complain about an article being behind a paywall? Go fuck yourself.

Kerry had a lot wrong with him, both in his history and his policies. It is just that those things were also the platform and history of the Democrat Party.

The warning is "NYT." Short and sweet. If you don't know the NYT has a paywall... I find that hard to believe, but I'm not going to waste everyone's time tending to your remedial education.
