I don't know who took the example of avocados and turned what will be a major disruption to the economy into a joke.

If your first thought was the "extravagant" food that would not be available, you apparently don't bother to notice where your produce comes from or don't ever shop for groceries (maybe elves deliver it to you).

Besides the huge amount of perishable food that goes both ways across the border every day, closing the border would quickly cripple the automobile and many other manufacturing industries.

For Trump to threaten this is reckless. And it wouldn't even solve the problem. People can still cross the border illegally and ask for asylum.; 4/4/19, 7:12 AM

This is not a "stop 'em at the border" effort to halt illegal immigration.

It's a hurt Mexico's economy, even if ours suffers too, until Mexico cooperates on the caravans.

The basic thought is we can endure the economic pain better and longer than Mexico.

Same as the Chinese tariff threat and the renegotiate NAFTA effort.

We are the world's largest economy and we've been played for chumps for decades. Trump sees this weapon that laid unused for all these years and raises it up, just enough, to get a more honest deal.; 4/4/19, 7:22 AM

The Chinese negotiations are stalled and Trump is never going to get from the Chinese what he says he wants. Like NAFTA, he will wrest a couple of minor concessions and declare victory. The new NAFTA, which hasn't even passed Congress, is not significantly different from the old one, which Trump claimed was "the worst deal ever" (among a bunch of other worst deals ever).

The amazing thing is that you and a bunch of others will believe his bullshit pronouncements.

Just like you still apparently believe we can maintain a "4, 5 or 6" percent GDP growth (hell why not 7 or more).

When we say that the problem is manufactured we mean that Trump's policies are what is creating the problem. And rather giving more aid to these countries and work through the State Department to improve conditions in Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala, Trump is doing the exact opposite, and by cutting off aid, will drive even more desperate people to leave and try and come here.

BJM said...: Mexico has never allowed Central Americans to cross their southern border enmass, they've been extremely harsh with illegals, especially Guatemalans, whom they despise and have been at war with for thousands of years. Mexico has very restrictive immigration laws. No one stays without means to support themselves and work permits are expensive and very difficult to obtain, and they really could give a crap about humanitarian aid or asylum for what is perceived to be other tribes.

This massive wave of illegals is designed to hurt us economically and to interfere in our elections. I thought that was a bad thing.

The only way to effect change in Mexico is to financially hit the oligarchs who control the economy.

This is perfect timing to hit them in the wallet as the Mexican growers are preparing tomatoes, peppers and avocados for the Cinco de Mayo shipments. I have little sympathy for American companies who turned their backs on American growers for higher profits. Nor will I weep for Dell, Ford or GM. Tough noogies.

I have no dog in the avocado toast dilemma as I planted my own trees five years ago; but it would be excellent for CA & FL growers who have almost been put out of business by Mexican avocados and will have fruit in the markets in June for the hardcore avo-toast hipsters.; 4/4/19, 12:06 PM

It is very relative. "Perishable food" has a huge carbon footprint. After harvesting, it is immediately in refrigeration. From processing, to transportation, to retail, to the home. Constant refrigeration....All so the authors of the Green Leap Forward can eat their arugula. Arugula is greens, that means there is almost no nutritional value. An upside down equation for carbon footprint to nutritional value ratio.
