"President Trump on Monday ordered new restrictions on asylum seekers at the Mexican border — including application fees and work permit restraints — and directed that cases in the already clogged immigration courts be settled within 180 days."

The NYT reports.
In a memo sent to Kevin McAleenan, the acting secretary of homeland security, and Attorney General William P. Barr.... Mr. Trump gave administration officials 90 days to draw up regulations that would carry out his orders.... The memo did not make clear how the plans would be carried out in immigration courts. More than 800,000 cases are pending, with an average wait time of almost two years...

Fewer migrants try to cross the border now than in the early 2000s. But the demographics have shifted: Most are now families from Central America rather than single Mexicans who could be quickly deported. The sheer number of families has overwhelmed the system, and because of rules that prohibit holding children in detention for more than 20 days, some families are released into communities along the border....

At the current pace of about 100,000 migrants each month, officials estimate more than a million people will have tried to cross the border within a year....

Set up the rules so that those bringing kids across the border get free entry and see a surge in people bringing kids across the border. Unexpectedly!

Seems like you could change the rules, at least temporarily, to disallow asylum requests made at the border, as opposed to in country of origin or other country. The influx is obviously gaming the system, so shut the system down.

"Families" in air quotes.

The mere presence of a child or children with ANY person gives a free pass into breaking the laws. Single young man with gang tattoos..accompanied by a child...sure...go right in. Take those kids with you.

There is no proof that these are ALL real "families". In fact it IS known that many of the children are not those of the people who are dragging them across the world.

Sex trafficking and actual slavery, by the Coyotes who transport their human cargo, are real problems in the illegal alien invasion. Men, women, children are all victims

Old article however the numbers are even worse now.

Child abuse, child sex trafficking, abandonment of the children once the perps are home free.....are all the result of no over sight, no proof, no attempt to even find out and not enforcing the laws.

If the result were the abuse of little kitty cats and puppies the Liberals would be all over this in red-faced and tearful outrage....but nope...just kids.

Move along. We have an agenda to uphold here. Votes to "garner"!!

The fact that Trump never got a hold of our immigration system from day one, that is going to be a problem for him. For all of us. WE all pay the price for this total breakdown. There are laws on the books that are not being followed.

Exactly - the left see illegal entrants as voters, and a means to an end for power. Nothing but power for the corrupt left.

The left see illegal entrants and felons as their stepping stone to unlimited power. Screw the rest of the nation as we deal with the onslaught of illegal entrants driving and killing people on our roads. Talking our welfare resources that WE paid for. etc...

Immigrants who come here using legal channels - they are real immigrants.

Why not?

It doesn't have to be a lot of money. If there are charitable organizations who feel that the people are true asylum seekers then why can't those organizations pony up the money. Put THEIR money where their intentions are.

Plus.....Welcome to America and California where EVERYTHING has a fee or tax.

Does anyone believe that more than a handful of these people will ever be deported? I doubt most will ever have a hearing.
There may be a few people in the hoard with legitimate asylum claims. If we shut the border and those few suffered as a result, who is to blame?
Somebody is behind this, driving this. It's not just a coincidence.
The Dems bought heavily into the political forecast that minorities voters would out number whites voters by now. That turned out either not to be true or to be very premature. But the Dems, with their embrace of identity politics and abandonment of their traditional working class base, were committed. Now they are determined to bring that demographic situation about by hook or by crook. They just need to buy a little more time.

The Left likes illegal immigrants.

They like walls, ethically impenetrable walls, democracy (i.e. people) dies in darkness, even more. But, yeah, the secular sects are fond of labor and environmental arbitrage, and other forms of created leverage (e.g. diversity), where there has been great progress of each.

DNA tests immediately. Arrest and deport adults if DNA does not show familial relationship.

There are child smuggling rings that rent a kid to illegals.

As part of any immigration reform I'm certainly for an entry fee for anyone seeking to be here. Four figures ought to do it. The poorest of the poor don't seem ot have issue ponying up for coyote protection. Give them some competition.

Diversity or color judgment including racism, sexism, genderism, etc. a.k.a. "identity politics".

Fortunately, the People have not met the anti-nativists' expectations for planned parenthood or color quotas for selective-Posterity (child) and recycled-Posterity. And, perhaps, there has been emigration reform in second and third-world nations that has limited the progress and appeal of immigration reform.

I'd contend that families (air quotes, as DBQ puts it, and following DBQs argument) are more problematic than single young men. The vast majority of those single young men were probably migrant workers - looking to actually work and support their families back home. This is something that we as a country can work with. Families coming here offer nothing for the US.

This excludes the criminal element, and those looking to gain either 'legally' or illegally; there needs to be barriers to prevent those who would take advantage of the US way of life from entering, or re-entering the country.

Robert Cook said...

"The Left likes illegal immigrants. They like the cheap labor, the chaos, and the illegal votes they bring."

You really are just pulling crazy shit out of your ass, aren't you?

Why would "the left" (sic) like illegal immigrants for "the cheap labor?" That's the farmers and other businesses who employ immigrants (illegal and otherwise) to do the backbreaking manual labor at cheap wages. As for "illegal votes," do you have data on how many illegal votes have been cast by illegal immigrants in each of the last few major national elections? Who has been helped by these illegal votes?

MD Greene said...

How about a one-year beef-up of asylum claims processing? Five thousands judges impaneled half-time (you know we have enough underemployed lawyers and empty courtrooms) assisted by medical processing to assure consanguinity in family cases, and research based in claimants' home countries. Automatic denial of claims for those who do not appear and, yes, action to deport in such cases. It would be cheaper in the long run.

If it sounds harsh, well, so is presenting non-English-speaking children for $22,000 annual educations in the poor (in both senses) school districts in my state and managing an entire family's medical needs through the local hospital emergency room. Also the crowd-out of "affordable" housing across the country.

This has gotten way, way out of hand. The only way to deal with it is to deal with it.

I shouldn't have to say this, but I don't think I'm a racist. I have good friends who have come here from every continent and subcontinent but Antarctica, and I'd be happy to take in more immigrants since our population is flatlining and probably heading downward. I'd just like an admissions process that is, you know, honest.

Bob Boyd said...

Why should Americans accept as legitimate a future Democratic President (or any other official) elected as a result of the Party organizing an illegal invasion of new Democrat voters. The fact is, many won't. It's going to be very destructive.
Progressives are always believing they can predict and control things that cannot be predicted or controlled. They never seem to learn from, or even remember, all the other times when they were wrong.
I support legal immigration. This crisis is purely political.

Cook: "Who has been helped by these illegal votes?"

Seriously? Stupidest most naive question ever. If those votes helped Republicans, Democrats would have built a 400 foot wall across the border with a mile of land mines on each side and the harshest voter ID checking on the planet.

I think it's a given that it helps the side that is doing everything humanly possible, no matter how insane, to maximize it.

I thought I saw an announcement in the past day or 3 that they are going to start doing this.

About time, I say.

Technical question: How long does it take to get results from a test? A simple test to prove common DNA. I am thinking a day or so but really don't know.

Cookie you have to know better than this. 11 counties in California have more registered voters than residents. Some precincts in the last election had 114% turnout. My wife has a January birthday and in 2016 had to renew her drivers' license. That month a new California law that allowed illegals to have DLs took effect. The DMV was so swamped that she could not get an appointment to renew until April. For 4 months she had no legal ID.

California has resisted any attempt at voter ID or deletion of non-residents from voter rolls. I'm probably still registered and I moved two years ago. I wouldn't be surprised to learn I had voted in the vote harvesting operation.

Application for asylum and application for a permanent visa as a regular immigrant is not at all the same thing.

Perhaps Trump means a fee to be waived in the case of justifiable asylum seekers, but that is a roundabout way of assessing fines for frivolous applications.

Or, since these people, bona fide asylum seekers or not, have no money to pay for applications, this may just be some more legal-pegal process maneuvering, which I am sorry to see the the U.S. Government engaging in.
