Music in Moab.

We're home now, but we drove into Moab, Utah last Wednesday, had a nice dinner at La Sal House, noticed a poster advertising free bluegrass music later that evening, went for a walk, and just happened upon the music venue, Moab Backyard Theater...

Moab, Utah

... as the show was about to begin. So we went in and took a chance...

Quicksand Soup in Moab, Utah

Great! The band was Quicksand Soup. Here's how they looked and sounded on the same stage a few days before we heard them.

They didn't do "Rock of Ages" the day we were there. My favorite song they played was "Sixteen Tons." Here's their studio recording of "Sixteen Tons."

From the Wikipedia article on "Sixteen Tons":
"Sixteen Tons" is a song written by Merle Travis about a coal miner, based on life in coal mines in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.... The line "You load sixteen tons and what do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt" came from a letter written by Travis's brother John. Another line came from their father, a coal miner, who would say: "I can't afford to die. I owe my soul to the company store."
Merle Travis got some fantastic letters! The brother even provided the rhyme. I'm impressed.

Now, I'm reading more about Merle Travis. What were his other songs? Well, one was "So Round, So Firm, So Fully Packed" (listen here). Travis seems to have been a master of found text. Not only did he get those "16 Tons" lines from letters, he got "So Round, So Firm, So Fully Packed" from the writing on a pack of Lucky Strike cigarettes:
The slogan "So round, so firm, so fully packed, so free and easy on the draw" was used in the Lucky Strike brand cigarette advertising of the time.
The song also uses the slogans "I'd walk a mile" (from Camel cigarettes), "Just ask the man who owns one" (from Packard automobiles), and "The Pause that Refreshes" (from Coca-Cola).

ADDED: Here's a Lucky Strike commercial from 1948 where you'll hear the slogan: [VIDEO DELETED]

That's very amusing, but please don't smoke! As President Trump says...

"Never take drugs. Don't drink alcohol. Don't smoke. Enjoy your life."

The post links to the Wikipedia article, which, of course, highlights the Tennessee Ernie Ford version. I heard that a lot as a child (without understanding the meaning at all), so that was one reason the version I heard this week appealed to me.

Anyway, lots of people have done the song. From the list at Wikipedia, I'll just cite a few:

1966: Stevie Wonder recorded a version influenced by Motown and soul music on his Down to Earth album.
1987: Johnny Cash released a country version on his album Johnny Cash Is Coming to Town.
1990: A rendition of the song by Eric Burdon was used for the opening to the comedy film Joe Versus the Volcano. Recorded in the early
2005: Punk band This Bike Is a Pipe Bomb included it on their album Dance Party...
2007: Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich's rendition of the song on 8 January received fairly widespread TV coverage.

Here's the Dennis Kucinich version.

Merle Travis is still revered in the subset of guitarists that play fingerstyle, along with Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed. Those three guys taught everyone how to play.
Merle was pressured to write an album folk songs by recording execs that didn't know what folk songs are; 16 Tons and Dark as a Dungeon are two of tunes. He once said that he didn't care for 16 Tons and thought his lyrics were silly, but after Ernie Ford had his hit, it became one of his favorites, dontcha know.

Amen to that.

In the 50s we lived on Lake George NY. We had an aluminum boat with a 5hp Johnson. At about 10 years old I was allowed to go anywhere on the northern 10 miles of the lake. No life jacket, just an old sat flat seat cushion that would probably have helped me drown faster.

Somehow I survived.

We were up there last summer and rented a boat. I went out with my grandson, 9, and let him drive around. I avoided supervising him, though I would have kept him out of trouble if need be. I just put him in the driver's seat and told him to figure it out. My son freaked when I he found out what we had done.

rcocean বলেছেন...

I'm all in favor of taking a drink, now and then. But smoking was always a bad, dangerous habit, and i'm glad its almost disappeared. I always thought there was something weird and unnatural in lighting something and breathing in the smoke. Plus, I've never been a fan of ash trays or cigarette butts. I can remember as a kid walking along a beach and stepping on cigarette butts - yuck!

Plus smoking a cigarette makes men look effeminate. If you're going to smoke go with a manly cigar or pipe.

rcocean বলেছেন...

Cigarette smoking - when it became popular in the 1920's - was actually a step up in terms of tobacco use. Before then, chewing and spitting tobacco was the major American way of enjoying nicotine. Talk about gross.

It's hard to top Johnny Cash when you sing about toil and hard times. Maybe the Tennessee Ernie Ford version was better. Anyway it's the one people remember. Merle Travis doesn't even make the top three for recorded versions of his own song. Is that a triumph for his songwriting ability or a dis for his singing.......The lyrics to Dark as Dungeon don't make sense. The song is effective when it tells of the misery in the mines, but I don't see how that misery could become addictive. Miners are addicted to paychecks not dirty jobs breathing foul air in dangerous places.

You will never leave Harlan alive

Or we'll never leave Harlan alive

Where the sun comes up about ten in the morning
And the sun goes down about three in the day
And you fill your cup with whatever bitter brew you're drinking
And you spend your life just thinkin' of how to get away

No one ever knew there was coal in them mountains
Till a man from the Northeast arrived
Waving hundred dollar bills he said I'll pay ya for your minerals
But he never left Harlan alive

Granny sold out cheap and they moved out west of Pineville
To a farm where big Richland River winds
I bet they danced them a jig, laughed and sang a new song
Who said we'd never leave Harlan alive?

But the times got hard and tobacco wasn't selling
And ole granddad knew what he'd do to survive
He went and dug for Harlan coal and sent the money back to granny
But he never left Harlan alive

"This Old House" has got good lyrics too, with the Angel Gabriel instead of Saint Peter as the celestial interlocutor.

The singer in "this old house" describes the lousy condition his house is in, because he is either old or very sick, and near death - broken window panes, broken doors - and a dog howling because the owner is not going to hunt with it anymore --- but the singer states that "I feel no fear of pain because there's an angel looking though a broken window pane" - or something like that, I am quoting through memory.

I get it that coal miners have now and always have had a hard life, and let them brag as much as they want. I'd brag too about how hard my life was and how tough I was if I were a coal miner.

But we all have a hard life and MOST of us are going to die ---- and ALL of us are probably going to die if the world does not end within our lifetimes (for further details, read the bios of Enoch, Ezekiel, Mary of Nazareth, and the relevant chapters of Thessalonians and Revelation).

If you are human, you can't surrender - you have to be tough enough to refuse to surrender --- God does not want you to surrender, and there is nobody but God to whom you can surrender and remain human ---- all you can do is care about other people or not care about other people. (Bernanos, La Joie, page 197, Tacoma Washington, Cluny Media, 2017 ....."Can't you understand ? To whom does one surrender ? To whom does one surrender one's soul ? ....... one gives oneself or one refuses oneself, but does one surrender?"

It was free but not entirely. It was the Solidarity Concert at St. Patrick's Cathedral on 5th Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. One of four arranged in the United States as a venue for Franco-American friendship and support in the wake of Notre Dame. A friend at work made sure to invite me but in fact it was open to the public.

The church's organist, Daniel Brondel, played several striking numbers:

https://saintpatrickscathedral.org/events/organ-recital-daniel-brondel-st-patricks-cathedral

Some of those low registers will really ring your chimes. Apparently Notre Dame had an early 32-footer which was a point of Pride there and they used it, so Brondel felt it appropriate to emulate.

Aside from the beautiful music, the gorgeous architecture, and the incredibly hard wooden pews, I remember about 30 seconds where I was thinking if and when somebody was going to come in and shoot up or blow up the place. I thought, that's okay, I'm in good company, bring it. I just wished NYC wasn't so restrictive with firearms so that I could be more than a bullet soak.

And then the music started and my fool mind shut up and listened.
