"Leave aside your politics for a moment. I don’t care whom you voted for, which party you identify with, whether you think we are stronger together or want to make America great again. If the power of America as an idea dies, American power will shortly follow.... I have never made any secret of how I felt about Candidate Trump, and my reservations about President Trump are even bigger. But in evaluating everything that comes over the next four years, do not lose sight for a moment of how powerful and important for all of us it is to maintain America as an idea. Doing so will be more important than the sum total of every individual policy outcome. In all instances, do your best to ensure that we continue to lift our lamp beside the golden door. Because when the idea of America is snuffed out, we forever become just another country."
On the occasion of Biden's rollout of his "America is an idea" slogan, I'm reading — from January 2017 — "America is an idea" by Michael J. Koplow. There's a plain anti-Trumpism to this "America is an idea" idea.

America is an ideal, not an idea.
Forgot the “L”
American is an ideal
Great minds...
The American idea is simply that this land ( Real Estate) is ours. And we will fight before we will submit to be ruled by the God damned European Empires. Which is why we have always been enemy #1 of the Globalist World Government claiming authority to rule us based on 100% fake Co2 Warmist BS.
Any idiot can have an idea. It takes real brains to design and implement a constitutional republic that is as robust as the American political system. And it takes a commitment to actual civility to maintain it.
"...do not lose sight for a moment of how powerful and important for all of us it is to maintain America as an idea."
No. It is important for us to maintain America as a sovereign nation with actual borders and rational immigration laws.
Is Biden an American Exceptionalist? Is that allowed in today's Democratic party?
If America is an idea, maybe we can write the idea down and give it to people in other countries, in lieu of inviting them all to live here.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!
If America is an idea, what are Americans? Figments?
America is a place and a people.
The indefinable - or very difficult to define, as words are such a weak tool - collective qualities of these people pre-existed any "idea" that can be set on paper. And these indefinable qualities are the truth behind any "ideas".
Anyone can fill reams of paper with "ideas", crabbed, constrained, broken down by propositions, memorized. And none of this matters at all.
Its hard for me to put down in text my contempt for text.
The worship of "ideas" is a sort of idolatry.
An idea whose time has come, MAGA!
"If America is an idea, maybe we can write the idea down and give it to people in other countries, in lieu of inviting them all to live here."
You have done that. A lot.
It doesn't take, or not much of it does.
There is a long history of others reading American "ideas", becoming inspired by them, and concocting a disaster, or at least, sometimes, the recipe turned out rather different.
It works best if people learn from actual Americans. Or it did, many years ago.
merely as an idea, it is ethereal, borderless--
as an idea, it can be held by anyone, anywhere
and can be tailored to suit one's imaginings,
and requires no sacrifice.
but This 'idea' has been codified, and was/is the 1% inspiration realized by the 99% perspiration, blood, tears, and allegiance of those who cherish it

It is, at that, buwaya.
OK, I guess "the American dream" isn't an idea.
What-ev.
The "American Dream" is the same sort of human incentive that's been at work since Homo Erectus thought there might be better hunting over the next hill.
America is based on an idea - the idea that if you're honest, if you work hard, if you let your creative juices flow, if you have the drive and determination, you can make a good life here.

Its the same idea in Guipuzkoa. Really, it is. Or nearly anywhere. The resident of Guangdong thinks that of Hong Kong.
Sadly, Biden is about to embark on a game of oneupmanship among those whose ambition tells them to tear that idea asunder.
Do you have a message for the rest of the world?" a reporter asked. Biden, 76, replied, "Yes. America is coming back like we used to be: ethical, straight, telling the truth — supporting our allies. All those good things."
Lololol. And so it begins.

Soo..why wasn't it articulated as such throughout the Ages and around the world, and universally realized???
BAG
For once I disagree. America is based on the idea that the governed are entitled to govern themselves. (Oddly enough, that is the very ifea that is rejected by Mr Biden's party.) That is the core idea, and the constitution with its checks and balances and rights and limits and hindrances to majority rule is intended to make it *possible*. “A republic, if you can keep it.”
America is an idea is a warmed over Hill idea: Anne-Marie Slaughter, Hill-sidekick, The Idea That Is America. But not a city on a hill idea. That would be racist white-supremacist, like, Reaganite.
telling the truth
Ok, Joe....how many genders are there?
@Ken B,
Yeah, my description was kinda bland, indistinguishable from an ordinary Guangdonger 14,000 miles away - I was paying more attention to the NFL Draft. My bad.
Let me try again:
America was founded on the Judeo-Christian work and moral ethic, fueled by a thirst for Liberty, nurtured within a Constitutional framework of limited government, authorized by the consent of the governed.
That's a little more punchy.
There is an anti-Trump angle to the slogan, but it's also an attempt to channel JFK. For Democrats of a certain age, everything revolves around JFK and the Kennedys [Exhibit A: Chris Matthews].
There is a great hunger among some Democrats for a leader who will call for sacrifice on behalf of the nation (so long as nobody is really expected to sacrifice anything ... or the sacrifices are going to be made by somebody else).
Doesn’t the Constitution pretty well summarize the American idea? Maybe we all just need to get on the same page.
Set aside politics ... But screw Trump or else!
Biden has hired the Maoist Anita Dunn for his campaign. She is an actual Maoist. Not in 1969. Today. Obama introduced them.
Even ideas have consequences.
Is the idea that we’re destined to be free?
Or is the idea that we’re destined for free stuff?
I’m pretty sure Biden is selling the latter...
