Well, the University of Oregon, my alma mater, convincingly defeated the Univ. of Wisconsin in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

Oregon played incredible defense. A potential Cinderella team.

I think mice are rather nice;
Their tails are long, their faces small;
They haven’t any chins at all.
Their ears are pink, their teeth are white,
They run about the house at night;
They nibble things they shouldn’t touch,
and, no one seems to like them much,
but, I think mice are rather nice.

A poem I found in a book of poems to read to your little children.

Watched Is Seattle Dying the other night. Excellent documentary. As a former Seattlite it made me sad but kudos to KOMO Seattle for airing this and I urge everyone to watch this outstanding series. The truth is often unpleasant but needs to be told and it's refreshing to know that, in spite of city officials, there are some who want to do something about the problems of drug abuse and homelessness in Seattle, not just for the city but for the afflicted. As suggested, McNeil Island, formerly a prison but currently unoccupied, would be a perfect location for an incarceration rehab facility. I urge everyone to watch this outstanding series.

BTW, when we left Seattle in the 90's homelessness and drugs were just becoming major issues. I no longer shopped at Pike Place Market because of aggressive panhandlers and none of the city parks were usable except by vagrants who slept on the tables and often left needles lying about. Like San Francisco, a once beautiful and exciting city has thrown in the towel.

The story of Maria Bartiromo’s interview with Trump is getting interesting. I am seeing stories on other news outlets that are more defensive of Bartiromo and her producers and than is the Fox News home page.

For those not aware of it, Bartiromo interviewed the President and asked him why he had been going after the late John McCain. Answering the line of questions, Trump got progressively weird and angry, culminating in his commenting that there had been an agreement that the interview would not get into the subject of McCain. Maria Bartiromo defended her interview when it aired, saying that there had been no prior agreement about subject matter terms for the interview. But Fox had no other reporting and it was other outlets who reported that a Fox producer confirmed that White House officials tried to extract an agreement that McCain questions would not be asked, but Bartiromo’s producers refused.

If anybody else thinks this was a rare good moment in a bad month for Fox News; I would agree.

Suggest to the professor...make the cafe post exempt from moderation and try to get some sleep. There is no topic to adhere to, insults are pretty minimal as the main perps are sleeping and most anything goes anyway. That way, we insomniacs can have something useless to do, like reading the nonsense that usuallypopulates the cafe posts, whilst trying to get back to sleep.

"His sexual needs were his sexual needs, coming from whatever childhood he has or whatever DNA he has . . . You can say ‘molested,’ but those children, as you heard them say [later, as adults], they were thrilled to be there. They both married and they both have children, so it didn’t kill them.”

Apologies to the moderators, but I want to make a slightly different point about Streisand than where the other thread was heading.

Though it sounds like a poor excuse by Barbra, I take this as an indicator of the new prog cutting edge: now that pedophilia has just about worn out its usefulness as weapon to be used against the Catholic church, it can be celebrated as "sexual needs" like any other sexual needs, that kids will be thrilled about and that certainly won't kill them, so what's the trouble, and don't we all act "according to our DNA"?

I think you are joking.

But a lot of people take this seriously.

If the State of New York wishes it can declare war on the 30+ states that voted for Trump.

We have had enough of the Stalinist garbage.

It is time for consequences.

Big Mike - "no one seems to like them [mice] much"

but what about the other mice?
Little critters like that always seem to have big huge sentimental well-wishing thoughts for each other.

Mice, rats, cockroaches, on the varmint little critter side

and on the noble big critter side --- crows, vultures, and coyotes all seem happy to be hanging out with other crows, vultures and coyotes

if I liked to write poems about that sort of thing I would like to write a poem about that

I don't have a tool that lets me have the comments on only for one post. I'm sorry to have lost this particular free play, but I hope that what it becomes is good too. I'm very likely to read the cafe comments first thing in the morning, and so it's a good way to communicate with me about what you're interested in. And you can take a solo stand on anything...

The overwhelming demand for lithium-ion batteries.

"The lithium-ion batteries that power AirPods and most other contemporary battery reliant device are everywhere. One industry report forecast that sales would grow to $109.72 billion by 2026, from $36.2 billion in 2018. They charge faster, last longer, and pack more power into a small space than other types of batteries do. But they die faster, too, often after just a few years, because every time you charge them, they degrade a little.

"Lithium-ion batteries are different from other waste. Tossing them in the trash can create fires at waste-management facilities. And unfettered consumption has big upstream costs: The more devices with lithium-ion batteries that aren’t recycled, the more companies have to mine the finite resources that go into those batteries. Most lithium-ion batteries contain cobalt, which is often mined in terrible conditions in the developing world."

https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2019/03/your-airpods-probably-have-terrible-battery-life/585439/

https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2018-02-21/apple-talks-source-its-own-cobalt-price-more-triples

however a year later prices collapse..

https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2019-02-18/investors-betting-electric-vehicle-metals-have

With no price stability there will be little incentive to recycle high tech battery waste. Supply will continue to be met by mining worldwide.

This is the clearest indicator that the Mueller investigation and report is a nothingburger, as far as Trump is concerned.

“Oh, yes, he is my friend”
Said Frankie Lee in fright
“I do recall him very well
In fact, he just left my sight”
“Yes, that’s the one,” said the stranger
As quiet as a mouse
“Well, my message is, he’s down the road
Stranded in a house”

Well, Frankie Lee, he panicked
He dropped ev’rything and ran
Until he came up to the spot
Where Judas Priest did stand
“What kind of house is this,” he said
“Where I have come to roam?”
“It’s not a house,” said Judas Priest
“It’s not a house . . . it’s a home”

The season for tapping maple trees is coming to an end. Things I know now. It's a very picky, weather-oriented, localized thing to do. You need certain temperatures by night and others by day and these must happen before the tree buds. These conditions occur reliably in Wisconsin. You have to boil down ten gallons to get a quart. A free standing maple tree produces more sap with more sugar than one in a grove. It doesn't have to be a sugar maple but it has to be a maple to taste like maple. And now people are selling un-reduced maple sap as Maple Water - filled with anti-oxidants, electrolytes. This is sap which is something you could get gallons of, off a tree on your property. Flavor is also slightly affected by different soils according to the internet but I can't taste it. But you could get real Wisconsin Maple Water any March in Wisconsin.

I realize that the Mueller Report is going to have some kind of sting in it, that it will be filled with unproved allegations, with lines of thought in search of dots of fact to connect. But let's not get too complicated. The accusation was treason with Russia order to get elected, treason for which evidence existed. If there's no indictments, there's no evidence, it's over. The media has time to spend on it and spin it and rerun it. Regular people do not. It comes to a point and then it's over. And when someone tries to keep it going, people will think, Hmmm, so that is who you are. That perception will break out of the circle of the most politically involved into the mainstream where people are already feeling let down. So go ahead, CNN, MSNBC. Fix sneers, advance.

So this morning in Botswana (I’m just slowly passing through) an Afrikaans pilot was at a party at an airstrip outside Gaberone. Sunday, so maybe a wedding. He has a fight with his wife and hits her. There’s an intervention and he runs off, jumps into a private jet, takes off and comes back aiming it full throttle at the party tent. Fortunately they figure him for crazy in time and evacuate safely before impact. Despite a huge emplosion he’s the only casualty.

Other than an 8 year old girl being taken by a croc last week outside my hotel, that’s it from here in the way of big news in last couple of months.

A lovely country. The rains from the Angolan highlands are beginning their slow way down to flood the Okavango Delta. The it’ll be more water than land, rather than the opposite right now, and access to the more remote waterways will be easier. So I wait.

Wild swan, I recently retired and bought a lakeside cottage on a small lake in Wisconsin. Our realtor, who has a cottage not too far from us brought a jar of homemade maple syrup that her parents made from trees on their property close to her.
It was a great little gift to welcome us to Wisconsin! Awesome stuff.

Meade @6:40 AM: That's a kind offer, I'll consider it, although my Forester is starting to get a little junky looking with all the FOP booster, NRA, and shooting club stickers on it as it is.

OTOH, given the vehicle's age and my casual attitude to exterior maintenance, another sticker might actually help hold it together, so there's that.

I like the idea of enigmatic bumper stickers-- to be appreciated only by those in the know, so that they recognize and can support one another, if things get dicey.

Separately, our Governor just signed a tax on rain. Doubtless, the air will be next.
