The genius comedian Ricky Gervais is taking chances on Twitter.

Interestingly, he retweeted Titania McGrath.

An explanation:

ADDED: I used a screenshot for the Titania McGrath quote so you could see that Ricky Gervais retweeted it. But I can see in the comments that some of you don't get who she is. So here's a link to her Twitter feed.

I admit I'm not familiar with Ricky Gervais' oeuvre, but if that penis joke is representative of his genius, I'm not impressed.

Am, however, pleased to see anyone, anywhere, pushing back.

Pushing back on cock jokes.

It is only a little ha ha funny as a stand alone joke, but in the present context of 'progressive' enlightenment, it is HA HA! funny. And putting it with Tatiana's post, brilliant.

Ricky Gervais is a very crassy (sic) guy

Is a carrot penis snowperson joke a Trump joke in disguise? I can't watch Trump news or Trump humor anymore. They are about as funny as Hitler jokes.

The left has always been funny.

I get the joke, but not the wind up. Could someone diagram the humor?

Essential Gervais: Extras.

Poor Gervais: everything else.

His current comedy Humanity is quite funny. I also enjoyed him on Comedians in Cars where Jerry tried his best to scare the sh** out of him.

PS Humanity is on Netflix.

The banality of evil is very funny. But we can speak out and laugh when it pretends to have authority over everybody. That is our Second Amendment birthright in action.

One of the funniest things today is watching the student debt scam being run at the Brainwashed Univerities.

"never been a better time to wind people up"

Provided you are prepared to be Saccoed.

Anyway, the creative use of the carrot and "her cock" have just the right wind-up ring.

Forgive my ignorance - I know Ricky Gervais, but not Titania McGrath. A quick decamping to the Mighty Google says she's a radical intersectionalist something-wave feminist poet or thereabouts, and also that there's a parody Twitter handle at-TitaniaMcGrath that Twitter has banned (or did ban, possibly - but I avoid Twitter so I'm not going there to check)... and her book seems to be satire... so is she:

1. A real person named Titania who is a satirist?
2. A real (and really woke) person whose name has been appropriated for a satire Twitter account?
3. Somebody else by some other name who writes satire under the name Titania?
4. Something else?

I am confused. But I liked the tweet. As well as her other latest ones, according again to Google, e.g.: "If any of the following apply to you ( ) straight ( ) white ( ) male You do *not* have my consent to RT or like my tweets. That's called harassment." She sounds like a good time, either by her own design or inadvertently!

daskol said...

Gervais cracked a joke, but what is not funny at all about the tweet is watching him flaunt his British privilege. They get to say things, use words like "cock" and "cunt," that are forbidden to Americans.

Ann Althouse said...

@Jamie I added a link to her Twitter feed so you can explore the wit and wisdom of Titania McGrath on your own.

That reminds me I need to add my "Era of That's Not Funny" tag.

I think Gervais is right, but you have to really not care. It's a masochist's dreamland.

I’ve noticed Gervais Is capable of a true hysterical belly laugh.

Revealingly, perhaps, few comedians seem as able to so genuinely and wholeheartedly enjoy humor.

Please don't take pics when I bend down and eat the carrot. I'm identifying as hungry.

A little research rounds out the Titania story. Spoiler alert: she is a character developed by a Brit artist and comedienne named Lisa Graves. Titania emerged after a prior super-woke character named Godfrey Elfwick was banned from Twitter. She is brilliant. Feelings don’t care about your facts.

That's what I liked about Johnny Carson, he seemed to love what he was doing.

"How lovable was it, Johnny?"

Fernandinande said...

I think it was Titania who pranked the NYT with that ludicrous "How Can I Cure My White Guilt?" letter.

Amadeus 48 said...

When Titania was permanently banned by Twitter for 24 hours, her supporters started a movement #freeTit.

Fernandinande said...

...and that Titania is actually Godfrey Elfwick.

Amadeus 48 said...

In a piece on Quillette Titania makes the point that humor (or humour) is a patriarchal concept, and she salutes the new wave of brave feminist comedians who are subverting the genre by making sure that no ones laughs. The essay is titled “ Now I know how Nelson Madela felt.”

I told you all, the scariest thing going is a leftwing female. a leftwing intersectionalist female = pure Nazi.

Dear corrupt left, go F yourselves said...

titi is a fake intersectionalist femi-nazi? or a real one?

Does it matter? If you don't get that she's being sarcastic, doesn't it make it just as real and annoying.

It's sad that nobody remembers that he did the original Office which I find much superior to the American version. There is a Youtube out there which is the best of his hosting the Golden Globes a couple years ago. It has its moments, including his asking Mel Gibson on live TV: “What the f**k does ‘sugar tits’ even mean?”

Freeman Hunt said...

I agree. The original Office is hilarious.

Gervais projects (not counting stand up concerts or acting gigs) ranked:

1. Extras
2. The Office
3. Derek
4. Life's Too Short

Just my opinion.

The best Gervais clip is when he appeared with Elmo. Fortunately it wasn't aired on an actual episode of Sesame Street.

What chance is he supposed to be taking here?

Before he got into standup, Ricky Gervais had a brief and unsuccessful bout at a rock artist:
Little Ricky

It's a transgender joke.

I know who Titania McGrath is. What's a Ricky Gervais?

The snowperson May be transgendered but still benefits from White Privilege

I bookmarked Ms. McGrath the first time Ms. Althouse mentioned her, though I think I had seen her tweets before- the name sounded familiar to me. I have been reading her tweets ever since- she is fucking hilarious- she never once lifts the veil of parody, and that is hard to do.

Well, snow person is funny, because traditionally it's always been a snowman, but actually the traditional snowman never had sex organs, so snow person is probably more accurate, and then he says "she," so you realize it's a snow woman, except he's giving his snow woman a cock, because she's having a sex change while he's constructing her. And not just a carrot, but a giant carrot, and I'm like, oh wow, that snow person is compensating for something.

Anyway, it cracked me up.

Carrot as snowman’s penis is done in the Woody Allen movie “Radio Days” — and then eating the carrot.

Ricky Gervais is, himself, a giant dick.

His thinking on religion is dismal, but I love his sense of humor.

Remember, it's not vulgar if it makes you laugh.

Billionaires do not control comedy, yet.
So can it be trusted?

Tatiana is funnier and braver than Gervais.

Carrot as penis was invented at about the time I was 10 years old. I thought it was hysterical; my mom, not so much.

He hosted in 2010, 2011, 2013, and 2016. YouTube has chained versions of his jokes for each of those years.

Jaq said...

Ricky Gervais is one of the few comedians that I watch. His stuff is hysterical.

Earnest Prole said...

Gervais on Caitlyn Jenner at the Golden Globes: "I've changed" Gervais said, implying his jokes would go easier this year. "Not as much as Bruce Jenner, obviously... She became a role model for trans people everywhere, showing great bravery in breaking down barriers and destroying stereotypes. She didn't do a lot for women drivers, but you can't do everything."

Jamie said...

Maybe Gervais has just invested well?

rcocean said...

As a comedian he's funny.

As a "Deep thinker" Ricky G's hilarious.

But then, his "Function" as purveyor of "deep thoughts" on politics and religion is to assure the left-wing dumbo's in their superficial stupidity.

He's sort of like a NYT's Op-ed page for people who just read Entertainment weekly.

Gahrie said...

Maybe it's just me, but I have never found Gervais to be all that funny. I never watched either version of The Office so who knows? However I've always found him to be more of a professional asshole than a comedian. He's definitely an activist for the Left.
