Your blog has done a number of great things, Althouse. But near the very top of the list is your consistent and insightful tagging, and exposure of, "using children in politics."

Brava.

She sounds lame. Coulda pushed back while being more specific.

Jabbering about being around forever is not a response that is based on reasoning/logic re the topic.

Bern failed in another way, i.e. total weakness, w/ his BLM mic-thief moment.

HRC did way better than both when she was ambushed (by BLM.)

IMHO.

Why didn’t she ask how many of them are willing to go without hamburgers for life?

How many will never see grandma again because she lives too far away and won’t be able to fly?

How many have parents with so much extra money they can spend it insulating their home?

If kids are able to lobby for a policy, they should be able to discuss the personal consequences.

Here's an amazingly timeless video of Milton Friedman.

What he had to say is spot-on in understanding Feinstein exchange with the students and that horrible teacher's indoctrination.

Watch what Friedman has to say about tolerance, false certainty, humility and the search for truth.

I cued it up where he segues from the freedom to listen as distinct from the freedom of speech.

Watch the whole thing if you have time.

Two comments -

- Its not really the children you have to worry about, but those people in power who respond according to their wishes; or rather, that are willing to take the hue and cry as an opportunity to do what they were inclined to do anyway.

- You do have to worry about what they will be when they grow up and rise to power in their turn. The track record here does not reassure. The child is the father of the man after all.

Faced with that hectoring teacher--and the all knowing 16 year old, a less tolerant person would have been tempted to slap the stuffings out of their arrogant bodies.

The teachers who fill these school children's heads with that codswallop "we're all going to die in 12 years unless you do it our way", ought to be wrapped up in a giant canvas bag with a couple of boat anchors in it, and dropped into the ocean off the Farallon Islands. Lots of great white sharks there, and they might mistake these folks for seals.

Unfortunately justice will not prevail. And while I'm no fan of Di Fi for the stunt she pulled in the Kavanaugh hearings, I'll give her props for this performance.

And your public education, made that way by your higher education, is part of the fatal stream of poison. It starts at the top, your highest educational institutions. And yet nothing is being done, not even the slightest attempt to turn the poison off at the tap.

EDH says: Here's an amazingly timeless video of Milton Friedman.

Friedman was a grownup. We have too few of these nowadays. He quoted Cromwell, rather obliquely, but it's true that Cromwell prayed and wrestled with his conscience in the genuine fear that he could be wrong. The history jury is still out on that but he never had the absolute certainty that what they were doing was God's will.

The teachers' unions are fighting every effort to provide an escape to charters or vouchers.

The Tucson school board was trying to sell a vacant school to a developer who would tear it down to keep a charter group from buying it.

Original Mike said...

"I was not impressed by her argumentation. Her core argument was essentially "I won"."

Yeah, it should have been "you people have no clue regarding the implementation of your plan". Was it the teacher who said it would cost more to do nothing? Depressing.

Zach said...

It's got to be annoying for a Senator to be cast in someone else's video recorded morality play.

The script here is obvious: idealistic kids go to Washington and give the Senator a cute letter. She praises them and promises to support their goals. Video gets a little bit of viral play and everybody goes home happy.

The discordant element is that they asked her to support a particular piece of legislation, which isn't well thought out and has a lot of crazy elements. Feinstein really can't pledge to support a plan that will ban cars and planes within 10 years. She doesn't want to play the part they wrote for her.

A wise director gets the script in working order before he starts filming.

buwaya said...

Charters and vouchers are of limited use vis the "spiritual" matters of education.
Your problem is that all your schools draw from the same pool of would-be teachers and administrators, and those who develop curriculum, and those who would train teachers, or the trainers of the trainers of teachers.

Reorganizing schools addresses minor downstream inefficiencies. It does not dam or divert or turn off the poison stream. To do that you would have to burn down Harvard.

BarrySanders20 said...

Also corrosive is the fact that the kids at the front know they are currying favor with the activist teacher by aping the party line. Clearly just regurgitating the original gurgitation from that same activist. The kids in the back who either too shy, dont care, dont agree, or dont want to be there, wont get the kudos. It's an early form of jockeying for favors from the boss.

mockturtle said...

I was not impressed by her argumentation. Her core argument was essentially "I won".

A parent should always be able to employ the argument: "I'm the adult and you're the child, that's why'. When did we get the idea that a group of heavily indoctrinated schoolchildren should have political power equal to that of elected officials? And teachers nowadays are no more grown up than their students.

The kids and their teacher have no patience with that. They want her, expect her, think it's possible for her to act as a dictator.

@Althouse, the video you link to was provided by the "Sunrise Movement," and highly edited. You can reach the links to the full video (it's in multiple parts) by going to this website.

Bottom line, Feinstein was gracious, but pragmatic enough to point out that there is no way to pay for the green nude eel.

Ahem, Althouse, did you not learn your lesson about highly edited videos from the Nathan Phillips - Covington Catholic kids fiasco? It seems to me that a disclaimer that your video is subject to reinterpretation after the full video has come out would be a smart move.

@Big Mike, Thank you for the link. It shows a much, much different picture and the edited version was obviously cut to make DiFi look like a mean old lady to children who ARE GOING TO DIE unless she complies with their demands. The unedited tape show a much more professional interaction.

After the Covington debacle, one should never, ever give a hot take on a video without demanding to see the whole thing (recall that the jury acquitted the police in the Rodney King case because they saw the whole thing and not just the edited version the media wanted the public to see, so this is nothing new).

N.B. -- don't go down the rabbit hole of ALthouse's initial hot take on the Covington fiasco based upon an edited tape. Our gracious hostess gets, um, uncharacteristically defensive and aggressive when pointed out.

When did we get the idea that a group of heavily indoctrinated schoolchildren should have political power equal to that of elected officials?

Sixteen-year-olds could vote in Oregon, under a plan unveiled in the Legislature.

The Statesman Journal reports that several state lawmakers are introducing a bill that would ask voters to amend the Oregon Constitution to lower the voting age from 18 to 16 years old.

If the bill passes, the question would go to voters in the 2020 general election. The proposal would make Oregon the first in the nation to lower the statewide voting age to 16 years old.

The bill is backed by The Bus Project, a nonprofit organization that encourages volunteer civic activism in Oregon.

Thirteen other states, including Washington, have introduced bills since 2003 to lower the voting age, some for just school board elections and some for all state elections.

Right. Unlike, say, the smugness of the teacher or the 16-year-old. Or the kid who refers to her beforehand as "Feinstein." Hey, kid, I don't like her either but show some goddamn respect: It's Senator Feinstein.

I mean, the kids are just propagandized and told that only terrible people would think critically about what they're being shoved out front to support, but the teacher and the 16-year-old are awful.

rhhardin: I woudn't go that far. I'd have just asked, "How did you get here? And how do you plan to get here under the Green New Deal? Say, do you use the internet? Do you have any idea of the carbon footprint of those servers? Do you use air conditioning in the summer?

Now, are you going to give up all that, or will the restrictions only apply to other people, people less important than you?

I don't disagree but the charters and private schools get those teachers who are not happy in the industrial education system. They want something different. That's why the unions hate them.

My grandson had a 4th grade teacher who told his mother she could not do the math problems using Common Core, either.

He is now in a charter and there is improvement. I sent his father to private school but the tuition has gone astronomical. I can no long afford to send the grandchildren.

I have told his father that college might not be the best choice, at least at age 18. A tour in the Marine Corps would let him grow up. Colleges are unsafe for boys these days.

I think she wasn't harsh and explicit enough. The kids are being used here, and not breaking the news to them that
- they really don't know what they are talking about,
- that this is not their responsibility yet because they are still learning what they need to know to be a useful part of the discussion,
-and that "possibility matters"
is the kindest thing to do. Children should be allowed to be children. Get these kids off the hot seat. They'll be quite relieved.

Public education really is abusive right now. On the one hand children are personally coddled, on the other hand they are terrorized with all this stuff.

Frankly, I think modern adults are mostly fluffballs and idiots, but while in most cases I tolerate it because I believe we have the right to be idiots under the US Constitution, when it comes to child abuse, NO. Children have a right not to be mentally tortured by idiots.

I found myself seethingly angry at the teachers who put the kids in this situation. Just raging.

“As far as the hierarchy at Indiana University at that time, I have absolutely no respect whatsoever for those people. And that in mind, I have no interest in ever going back to that university.”

At that point, Patrick offered the thought that resulted in Knight saying, “I hope they’re all dead.” When the host said he knew that “some of them are,” Knight responded with, “Well, I hope the rest of them go.”

"Knight was let go by Indiana after the notoriously cantankerous coach had been advised to rein in his behavior, which included allegedly choking a player. Following a run-in with a student who greeted him with, “Hey, Knight, what’s up?” he was asked to resign. Knight refused, and Indiana president Myles Brand fired him."

Right. And 35 years ago, the equivalents of that teacher and those students would have been demanding the exact opposite of the policies that helped bring a peaceful end to the Cold War. They would have had utter contempt for any sane Democrat (presumed to be on their side) who patiently tried to explain why it was necessary to stand firm against the Soviets.

What those children will be like in a few years.

My students are know-nothings.They are exceedingly nice, pleasant, trustworthy, mostly honest, well-intentioned, and utterly decent. But their minds are largely empty, devoid of any substantial knowledge that might be the fruits of an education in an inheritance and a gift of a previous generation. They are the culmination of western civilization, a civilization that has forgotten it origins and aims, and as a result, has achieved near-perfect indifference about itself.

It’s difficult to gain admissions to the schools where I’ve taught – Princeton, Georgetown, and now Notre Dame.Students at these institutions have done what has been demanded of them:they are superb test-takers, they know exactly what is needed to get an A in every class (meaning that they rarely allow themselves to become passionate and invested in any one subject), they build superb resumes. They are respectful and cordial to their elders, though with their peers (as snatches of passing conversation reveal), easygoing if crude. They respect diversity (without having the slightest clue what diversity is) and they are experts in the arts of non-judgmentalism (at least publicly). They are the cream of their generation, the masters of the universe, a generation-in-waiting who will run America and the world.
