"Amazon said on Thursday that it was canceling plans to build a corporate campus in New York City."

"The company had planned to build a sprawling complex in Long Island City, Queens, in exchange for nearly $3 billion in state and city incentives. But the deal had run into fierce opposition from local lawmakers who criticized providing subsidies to one of the world’s most valuable companies. Amazon said the deal would have created more than 25,000 jobs. Amazon’s decision is a major blow for Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio, who had set aside their differences to lure the giant tech company to New York.... State Sen. Michael Gianaris, a vocal critic who was chosen for a state board with the power to veto the deal, said the decision revealed Amazon’s unwillingness to work with the Queens community it had wanted to join. 'Like a petulant child, Amazon insists on getting its way or takes its ball and leaves,' said Mr. Gianaris, a Democrat, whose neighborhood includes Long Island City. 'The only thing that happened here is that a community that was going to be profoundly affected by their presence started asking questions.'"

The NYT reports.

From Amazon's statement:
For Amazon, the commitment to build a new headquarters requires positive, collaborative relationships with state and local elected officials who will be supportive over the long-term. While polls show that 70% of New Yorkers support our plans and investment, a number of state and local politicians have made it clear that they oppose our presence and will not work with us to build the type of relationships that are required to go forward with the project we and many others envisioned in Long Island City.

"Love The One You're With"

If you're down and confused
And you don't remember who you're talking to
Concentration slip away
Because your baby is so far away

Well there's a rose in a fisted glove
And the eagle flies with the dove
And if you can't be with the one you love, honey
Love the one you're with

Don't be angry - don't be sad
Don't sit crying over good times you've had
There's a girl right next to you
And she's just waiting for something to do

Well there's a rose in a fisted glove
And the eagle flies with the dove
And if you can't be with the one you love honey
Love the one you're with

Turn your heartache right into joy
'Cause she's a girl and you're a boy
Get it together come on make it nice
You ain't gonna need any more advice

Well there's a rose in a fisted glove
And the eagle flies with the dove
And if you can't be with the one you love, honey
Love the one you're with

Bezos started out as a disruptor. Now he is the man.

He chose the suburbs of DC and New York to expand.

If he was still a disruptor he would choose to expand to places with lower property value s and regulations.

Bezos should consider moving this proposed hub to Camden NJ. There is no existing tax base there worth speaking off. Amazon going there can only be a positive for Camden and the surrounding areas. Its next to Philadelphia and an hour from NYC. I rather doubt that Senators Booker and Menendez would raise any Federal objections and NJ is trying to stanch a hemorrhage of people who earn enough to pay a real amount in taxes so I suspect even the NJ Democrats would get onboard with giving Bezos a deal.

Just like subsidies to sports teams, these business incentives end up giving money to people who don't need it. Maybe Amazon will find another mark, but the best way to win the game is not to play. Amazon's not going to Bumblebee, Arkansas no matter how much money they're offered. Let them decide where to locate based on the things that are available to everyone: infrastructure, office space availability, access to employees, education systems. Giveaways like this are how cities and states become poorer.

hawkeyedjb বলেছেন...

"...why not offer subsidies to expanding businesses, including small businesses, in NYC? Why should only a gigantic outsider be eligible?"

How is it good, how is it smart to lose every cent Amazon was going to put into the economy in the form of taxes?

Say Amazon would owe NYC $10,000,000 in taxes under the present code - if it built in NYC. And Amazon got a deal that it would only pay $7,500,000 - if it built in NYC instead of elsewhere where the taxes were lower and would only be $7,500,000 without any breaks. But then DeBlaso and others reneged and said: No, you pay the full $10,000,000. So Amazon went away. So by demanding the full $10,000,000, NYC lost every cent that Amazon would have paid. How is that good?

Even without special tax breaks, there's other states with lower taxes - always will be. NYC simply got greedy and made a mess of things. If Amazon gets off the Acela corridor and its people find themselves in one of those American counties that haven't had a murder in 20 years in an area with houses they can afford, with good schools - they'll get over the lack of Thai restaurants. Anyhow, the Thais and everyone else will follow them there.

Amazon doesn't know how to play the game. Amazon makes deal with politicians. A bunch of protestors show up complaining about affordable housing. Amazon goes back to negotiating table. Politician says he would love to agree to deal but his constituents want affordable housing. Amazon donates money to fund for affordable housing, run by politician's political allies or (if politician is a person of color) family. Affordable housing people donate to politician's campaign, then spend a decade, with multiple cost overruns, building high-end condos with a couple of "affordable" units.

Amazon gets HQ; politician gets money for re-election; politicians' allies or family get a little richer. Affordable housing is still a problem, and the next company that wants tax incentives is going to have to pony up some money to "solve" it.
