I've lived and worked in Ukraine and all over the US. I'm kinda curious about life in Alaska.

But now I'm about 1/2 retired but the prospect of a new adventure appeals to me too. The wife is ok either way.

Thoughts?

Warren Klobuchar, huh? Ok...

@Rajkumar,

Elizabeth Warren as POTUS

Nope. Sorry. After her insane "Kitchen N' Beer Summit", it's gonna take a lot of damage control to right that ship.

The New Year has not been kind to Warren or Romney**

** What imbecile on Romney's managerial staff okayed that NYT opinion piece? I can't believe there weren't staffers who didn't didn't resign in protest over that incredible piece of imbecility! Can anyone give me an example of an anti-Trump Republican who's thriving now?

For those LLR fanboyz keeping track, today was the 637th time in the last 3 years that LLR Chuck's "True Conservative" hero, Max Boot, who just so happens to align utterly and completely with the far left
on every single policy issue, announced that he was officially leaving the republican party.

Max Boot, who attacks republicans and their voters every single day, at least is still able to legitimately claim to like republicans more than LLR Chuck.

So Max has that going for him, which is nice.

Yeah, we'd have to get two snowmobiles. My wife is from the north and she would love to have real winter again.

I'm just afraid we have too romantic view of Alaska. Winter from November to March. Yikes!

It’s a big state. The interior is brutally cold in winter. So is the north. The coast is more like the rest of the Pacific Northwest.

YH: "Can anyone give me an example of an anti-Trump Republican who's thriving now?"

There's alot of Soros/Other Lefty Billionaire/FusionGPS/Dem cash keeping many of LLR Chuck's "TruCon" heroes flush with cash as they attack conservatives and their policies.

This made my day. On Louis CK

Louis C.K. has lost everything. That seems fair to me. And now he’s trying to start all over again, which also seems fair to me. Nobody owes him movie roles or producer credits or any of the other stuff he lost in the space of a day. But if he can still find comedy clubs that want to book him, and people still want to go see him, how is that hurting you?

Taking shots at Louis C.K. in 2019 is punching down. It makes you the bully. If that’s who you are, go right ahead. And then project your own bullying behavior onto him. Feels good, doesn’t it? Feels righteous. You’re a good person. Sure.

Hooray for you. Wonderful, marvelous you.

Never lived there but was up there a bit on business and thus had experience with the locals from a non-tourist point of view. Very nice people, Texas-like in their independence and good will. Normals for the most part. The winters weigh on them but they escape to Hawaii just as did Captain Cook. Look at the number of fights from Anchorage to Honolulu for an idea of that. The summers they let loose and fish until midnight.

I am retired. I played golf today. It was a beautiful winter day. Clear skies and temperature in the low 50s F. What more can you ask for?

PS. I was once on the phone in the Sheraton downtown Anchorage, looking out the window as I talked to a guy in LA. Saw an elk walking down the street and an Indian coming out of a bar and saw them meet face to face with the Indian retreating into the bar. I told the guy in LA what I had seen. He said he had been up there all the time when he financed the Captain Cook Hotel and that it was an Indian dressed up as an Elk. He said they did it all the time. Happily I had taken a picture from the window and it now hangs on the wall of an LA investment banker along with my cover letter.

So there is that about Alaska

I voted for Romney reluctantly, because I wanted the Obama presidency to end. But what a lousy candidate. He was like the worst stereotype of the richy-rich Republican, somehow merged with a robot. Remember how he said he was "severely conservative"?

The funniest meme from that election was the "dogs against Romney" movement. Credit where it's due.

I live in Ohio, and it was clear to me that Romney was going to lose early on. The Dems launched ads regarding Bain Capital, and they were devastating. Romney was made to embody the worst aspects of predatory capitalism (including outsourcing jobs). Romney's campaign never tried to answer those ads.

What's very strange, is that those ads, in a different style, could have come from the Trump campaign. It's amazing to me that so many Republicans, including Romney, still don't get it. Trump will make mincemeat of Romney if he keeps playing the same game.

As for Mormons, keep in mind they left the United States they hated and occupied a valley in Mexican territory so they could rule a separate theocracy cult under a Prophet and have their own money and Army. And Mitt is an anointed Mormon with a status that is way greater than a mere American like Trump.

I was in New Orleans in Oct 2012 - on the night Romney cleaned Obama's clock in that first debate. I was so thrilled! I left that French Quarter bar, and called a close friend to proclaim with unabated giddiness that Mitt had developed the political spine to thump Obama!

I jumped for joy down Bourbon St, and drank a Sazerac in blissful euphoria.

Boy, was I wrong. What a stiff. He totally folded during the Candy Crowley CNN debate. He just gave it away.

Way over Mitt. He needs to just.shut.up.

Althouse, as attuned as you are to the subtexts of photos, have you seen the photo of Trump accompanying Paul Krugman’s column today at the NYT online? He’s framed beneath a light fixture that makes him look as though he has horns. I guess it’s the antichrist version to the Obama picture in front of the presidential seal that made Obama look as though he had a halo.

Bay Area Guy -

wow.

I never looked at that rich little twerp and thought he was a winner.

Once or twice I thought maybe he will be man enough to try not to lose.

But I was wrong.

I mean, the little guy was Mormon Royalty and like the lowest of the low he flattered the Massachusetts people and said he would be right there with them in support of abortion rights and government cash for abortion doctors.
No pity and no concern for the victims of that policy.

He was an adult male, not some teenager, and he was Mormon Royalty, remember that.

The man is a disgrace to his religion.
Of course his first act as a senator was going to be abject ingratitude and disloyalty.

That being said, in my "faith tradition", the current "leader" is a lot more like King Herod than he is like the saint he named himself after in his pride of life.

This world is not anywhere near as good as it should be. Go home, Mitt, be the grandpa you were meant to be, in the circle of your family, and leave the good people of America alone!

And, in case poor Bergoglio is reading this: Repent, Pope Herod! Have some pity on your fellow Catholics and go back to Argentina and spend the rest of your life as a kindly old priest!

Well, nobody listens to me. So there's that.

I don't even feel apprehensive about what the new Congress will do. I know. They'll lie, they'll posture. Phony revelations that no one believes. The NYT will be more like CNN everyday and CNN will be like someone selling a cancer cure on late night TV. The House'll say they have to impeach. The Senate won't do it. And so, nothing. And so, in the end the media will realize that they've impeached their own credibility beyond repair, that that is what they have been doing; and in the end the Dems will turn from their own words in disgust like indulged five-year olds who've been eating cotton candy, staying up late and riding the roller coaster at the county fair. The Year of Congress Assembling Pointlessly.

I watched the show about James Watson on PBS. I used to think that Watson stole Rosalind Franklin’s research, but it turned out that she had presented her findings in a lecture before Wilkins showed Photo 51 to Watson, and once you’ve presented your findings in an open forum they belong to the scientific community and not just to you. After doing key work with X-ray crystallography that played a critical role in helping Watson and Crick elucidate the structure of DNA, she went on to do fantastic research into viruses that was also Nobel-worthy. She never got one, though, because she died of ovarian cancer at just 37, and the Nobel committee does not make posthumous awards.

Unexpectedly, at the very moment that the entire far left/dems/LLR's/MSM/The Cuckly Standard Hillary-paid dossier lies are collapsing faster than LLR Chuck's faux-conservative online persona, that same LLR Chuck, a self-described Smear artist, continues to advance the Soros-funded/FusionGPS smears (via The Weekly Standard) false narrative about Trump and Putin.

I. Did. Not. See. That. Coming.

Of course, I should have seen that coming as I did listen in to some of the lefty fever swamp talking heads and LLR Chuck is never far behind them.

And this on top of Chuck's reflexive, passionate defense yesterday of his "magnificent" obama re: military service.

Its going to be fun watching Chuck over the coming months as he filters thru all the lefty narrative needs to identify the ones he wants to push......from a "true conservative" perspective.....naturally...
(Wink wink).....

That was the very first time a major party candidate surrendered unconditionally to Candy Crowley, CNN and Barack Obama simultaneously in live TV in front of a global audience.

LLR Chuck was no doubt beaming with satisfaction. A simultaneous republican surrender to the MSM and LLR Chuck's "magnificent" obama.

Eat your heart out Kasich!!

Make sure you have time off in the winter to escape to sunny locations. There are lots of Alaska-Hawaii flights. Oh -- and a Lamp to ward off SAD.

You don't say where you'll be. Juneau is a place to feel trapped in -- you can't drive out of there -- but some people like the green of it. Fairbanks has the University, but it can get super cold, but that might be fun for a bit.

This morning's PJ Media blog has a wonderful story on the Southern Poverty Law Center's campaign to smear a lawyer working for the City of Baltimore. The lawyer, who was fired after being branded a Neo-Nazi by SPLC, has filed a $6.5 million lawsuit, claiming the SPLC received and paid for stolen documents in violation of confidentiality agreements to "get" their target. The lawyer has done pro-bono work for African-Americans, but his career is destroyed due to racism charges.

narciso - that is a good point

for example the basic take on James Joyce is "he was contemptuous of the church of his day", and did not believe in God ,

not exactly. He, like me, (who subscribed to the Wanderer in the 1980s and knew about all the bad things the mediocre hierarchy of the day was capable of , with no obvious remorse, at least back then ) was outraged at the bad things bad people did with the power they were given in a society where religious power was a much more powerful thing than it is now (Christian religion anyway, the SWPL religion is near its height), and while his later work on Finnegans Wake displays a deep appreciation of Pauline theology, not to mention a Hopkins-like delight in this world, he could never say, yes, Credo in Unam Sanctam Ecclesiam --- because of his sense of justice, and his despair at the mediocre priests and nuns of his day, and for that he can be forgiven.

Poor Bergoglio's flattery of abortionists is worse than Joyce's refusal to write pious and wonderful novels, like the novels of Bernanos and Chesterton at their best. You are a smart guy, you don't need me to explain why.
