Modern morse not only has punctuation but now distinguishes left parenthesis from right parenthesis. Most operators know only period, comma, question mark and em-dash though. This prevents them from sending :-) but is otherwise harmless.

Trump is only partially playing his Presidency like an Apprentice episode. He's also using his experience with the WWF to promote his image. The all caps is definitely a WWF move. He'll get a lot of mileage in playing off Adam Schiff. That guy was sent by Central Casting to play the part of the pencil necked geek. Perfect foil for Trump. Even better in some respects than Nancy whose age and infirmities might attract some sympathy if Trump threatens to body slam her during the big match.......I'd like to see Trump make use of his Miss Universe experience as well. A swimsuit competition before appointing the next UN ambassador would be great for ratings.

Tcrosse--I too used a teletype in the 1970s. In my case, as a teenager working in my father's radio station. The teletype sat in a small room of its own, hammering away nonstop 24 hours a day, producing reams of paper filled with news, weather, sports and other features for us to read on air.

The constant muffled din of the keys hammering the paper, of the whole machine swaying when the end of a line was reached and the key assembly zipped back over to the left, is one of my strongest memories of that job. That and getting ink all over my fingers when I had to change the ribbon on the machine (ideally BEFORE the pages became unreadably faint). Or replacing the large box of fan-fold paper that fed the machine (again, ideally before it ran out and the keys just hammered away at the empty platen until someone noticed).

when i DJ'd on ISU's student radio (KPGY: hogging the airwaves with 20 watts of power!) back in the early '80's, we still had a teletype just like that: It was SO COOL to get the AP wire that way. I wanted to get a camera, a put the feed on the public access cable system (which, we couldn't do :( I STILL think that would make a great show (WAY better than a yule log)

I know what you mean. I never felt so plugged into what was happening in the world as I did then. I'd read a report that an event/disaster just happened, followed by regular updates. That Politician X said this; an hour later, a report that Politician Y responded with that, and on and on hour by hour. And this was back in the day when the newsfeed was just that--a NEWS feed. Who, what, when, where, how, with no (or damned little) editorializing. Just the facts.

With the internet now, I have access to a firehose of material compared to what they could channel through a telephone line one character at a time back then--but I was getting more real, solid facts (without an agenda) then than I can now.

But that was then and apparently some time between then and a week ago the dems/left/LLR's amended the Constitution by adding the Mattis Runs Military and Foreign Policy Clause.

This is similar to the dems/left/LLR Constitutional change requiring the entire Executive branch of Govt to operate independently of the elected Chief Executive.

Naturally, these brand spanking new changes went into effect around noon on Jan 20, 2017.

First; a great many questions were raised about Bill Clinton’s draft record and avoidance of Vietnam era military service. And basically no media outlet was more actively in raising questions about Bill and Hillary Clinton than the Weekly Standard. Pick whatever Google terms you might like to use: Bill Clinton, draft, Vietnam, deferment, et cetera. Be sure to include the name of the Weekly Standard, and or Bill Kristol and or Steve Hayes as part of your search. You’ll come up with numerous examples of the Weekly Standard making a name for itself as being in the vanguard of conservative media taking on the Clintons.

Now about Obama; what war was he supposed to have served in? What ever was Obama’s relationship to a military draft? He was too young for draft registration, much less Vietnam service. So there’s a simple reason why no one ever asked Obama what he did during his the Vietnam War. He was a child.

LLR Chuck's passionate defense of his "nagnificent" obama, again, as always, and one assumes always will be, is duly noted.

Now, our LLR Chuckie, when he isnt busy attacking military veterans who happen to be conservatives while he simultaneously defends the most despicable Stolen Valor dems (unexpectedly!) might have looked into this a tad more.

Now, as always, in LLR Chuck's rush to be the dems designated "fluffer", he of course, naturally, tries to pretend that Vietnam is the only conflict that is up for discussion re: obambi/military service.

Of course Chuckie does that. His lefty pals need that.

Unfortunately for our "Brian Stelter republican" Chuck, there were conflicts aplenty during obama's prime military service age years.

Lots going on in the middle east (Desert 1, anyone?, Lebanon, Sinai), Central America (El Salvador/Honduras/others), Grenada (!), North Africa (Gulf of Sidra ring a bell Chuckie?), Korea, etc.

If Chuck ever got off his knees in frobt of the dem zippers long enough to look into it he might actually learn there was lots going on militarily that obama could have been a part of.

As for Kristol and the soros-funded FusionGPS collaborating/Colluding Weekly Standard, no, I dont care about what lies they told years ago while posing as conservatives.

At all.

TRUMP: It’s amazing, I can’t even believe it. I’ve been so lucky in terms of that whole world. It is a dangerous world out there. It’s like Vietnam, sort of.

STERN: Hey it’s your personal Vietnam isn’t it?

TRUMP: It is my personal Vietnam. I feel like a great and very brave soldier!

STERN: A lot of guys who went through Vietnam came out unscathed. A lot of guys going through the 80’s having sex with different women came out with AIDS and all kinds of things.

TRUMP: This is better than Vietnam, but it’s uh… it’s more fun.

STERN: A little better, but every v****a is a landmine, haven’t we both said that in private?

TRUMP: [intense laughter] I think it is a potential landmine. There’s some real danger there.

He was too young for draft registration

Pretty stupid mistake for a supposed lawyer. Obama is four years older than me, and I had to register for the draft.

Carter re-activated registration in 1980 for males between the ages of 18 and 26. Later laws made registration a requirement for federal aid or employment. It is still active today. Obama was required to register for the draft.

2018 was a crappy year for reasons I can't quite solidify. It was good for economics, trade, and reduction of government regulation, but on the culture front it has been a huge disappointment approaching scary symptoms of disease ahead with the Bill of Rights, truth, and tolerance all seeming to lose their value to many in our society and specially institutions like education. It's been a year of retardation of our basic principles as a nation and a free people as censorship, small "f" fascism, stupidity, and anarchy have all seemed to get another chance to ruin lives and cultural progress after a relatively long run of being held in check. So many fools are being maleducated by a bureaucratic army of closed minds and weak spines that it's very hard feel confident that we can avoid a serous reckoning or worse. Unfortunately, it seems that only the Second Amendment will be left to hold it all together. Imagine life in a nation without the Bill of Rights really meaning anything to half our nation. I think we are close, and it will be all downhill from there. I'm praying 2019 will be a return to reason and enlightenment, respect and tolerance.

Chuck's talking about the Vietnam years there, not when Obama was older and required to register for the draft. Which he did, according to the Selective Service:

After contacting the Selective Service System for an answer several times since late June, Pajamas Media obtained official confirmation from the Selective Service System via email that Barack Obama did indeed register for the Selective Service as required by law, and is eligible to run for the presidency.

Mr. Owens,

Barack Hussein Obama registered at a post office in Hawaii. The effective registration date was September 4, 1980.

Yep; I was wrong. I am not even going to look it up or check you. If you say so, I am confident that you are correct.

Per the other comment on this subject we know that fact checkers looked into Obama’s draft registration and he duly registered. But was never subject to a draft, just as you weren’t. I won’t ask what your unit was in ‘Nam. If at your age you served in Vietnam, it would have been designing a factory for Nike, right?

So I was wrong about Obama needing to register. He registered. But he didn’t fake heel spurs to avoid service, which is the one and only salient point at issue here.

I hope you’re not talking about me. I never supported Bill Clinton or Hillary. Trump haters like Bill Kristol, Steve Hayes, George Will, Jeff Flake, Bob Corker, John McCain, and too many others to list, never supported the Clintons.

I am not conflicted on this issue. I never defended or supported Bill Clinton. I never voted for him.

I will make the completely obvious observation of this; just imagine what the Tea Party/Trump Cult/Deplorable crowd would have said about Clinton or Obama if as candidates those presidents had gotten medical exemptions from the draft based on the representations of a couple of podiatrists who were renting properties from the candidate’s father. And the diagnosis had been “bone spurs.”
