[In The Atlantic, Franklin] Foer suggests this nostalgia is mostly bunk, since the WASPs were so often bigots (he quotes Henry Adams’s fears of a “furtive Yacoob or Ysaac still reeking of the ghetto”), since their cultivation of noblesse oblige was really all about “preserving [a] place at the high table of American life,” and since so many of their virtues were superficial, a matter of dressing nicely while practicing imperialism, or writing lovely thank-you notes while they outsourced the dirty work of politics to race-baiting operatives....
However, one of the lessons of the age of meritocracy is that building a more democratic and inclusive ruling class is harder than it looks, and even perhaps a contradiction in terms.... [I]f some of the elder Bush’s mourners wish we still had a WASP establishment, their desire probably reflects a belated realization that certain of the old establishment’s vices were inherent to any elite, that meritocracy creates its own forms of exclusion — and that the WASPs had virtues that their successors have failed to inherit or revive.
Those virtues included a spirit of noblesse oblige and personal austerity and piety that went beyond the thank-you notes and boat shoes and prep school chapel going — a spirit that trained the most privileged children for service, not just success, that sent men like Bush into combat alongside the sons of farmers and mechanics in the same way that it sent missionaries and diplomats abroad in the service of their churches and their country....

"Put simply, Americans miss [H.W.] Bush because we miss the WASPs — because we feel, at some level, that their more meritocratic and diverse and secular successors rule us neither as wisely nor as well."

I don't see how you can look at Barack Obama and Donald Trump and think "meritocracy".
Steve Sailer had a good take on Foer's article as well. You can read it here. Also recommend Eric Kaufmann's The Rise and Fall of Anglo-America. It is amazing how much Jewish creative products are a result of anti-WASP resentments. See Matthew Weiner's take on his creation of Mad Men, for example.
Trump is nicer than Bush was. Invested public figures aren't good at seeing it, is all.
They're going by PC scoring.
Bush had a learned habit of virtue signalling.
But you don't need the signal to have the virtue, which you might have or might not as well.

All true. Yet all too easily dismissed as raaaaaaacism.
We used to train our children to think critically. Now we train them that every situation includes a racist and their job is to identify and cast them out.
Apparently if we remove all “racism” our other problems are magically solved.
Americans miss Bush because it's a media clickbait plan to say so. They sell eyeballs.
They are still butt-hurt that Mike Dukakis made the decision to give a weekend pass to a rapist/murderer on his honor that he would be back to prison on Monday. It is so important to these people to suppress uncomfortable facts that they keep repeating their lies by omission for decades.
I'll miss the mail today, if the post office is closed.
I used to love William Safire - the designated "conservative" at the NYT. But since then, the position has been filled with whiny little bitches.
Do Americans miss H.W. Bush?
What? Malia Obama won't be serving in the Space Marines?
WASP's lost control and the new Republic died when they let the Germans in. The Irish and latter day invaders merely put more dirt on the grave.
You can't really have a meritocracy when no one agrees by what standard merit should be judged.
Yes, noblesse oblige and a spirit of service are a part of the old-school ruling elite but the veneer of gentility can mask a great deal of evil, as well. Some of our best Presidents, e.g., Lincoln, were decidedly un-aristocratic.
Obama's high school peers stumbled out the van with Spicoli in Fast Times. If that's the choice I'll take the prep school kids.
Ross believes you can judge a man by the crease in his mom-jeans.
Holy cow...."meritocratic", "diverse" and "rule" belong nowhere no how in any description of previous dynastic administrations.
Elitism made flesh in the written word, NYT is thy name.
this nostalgia is mostly bunk
True, because the nostalgia is an act by the MSM - "hey look! We don't hate Republicans" as long as the Republicans are long gone and dead.
The media reaction to GHWBush's death and legacy is derived from a veiled understanding that they have gone overboard in anti-Trumpism. Now they are desperate for an opportunity to show that they are even handed -- that they are not reflexively and indecently negative about all Republicans or Conservatives. Now that they are no longer relevant to the future politics, it is safe to revile the Clintons and praise the Bushes.
If Ross Per-rot didn't loathe the Bush family, we'd be saying "Clinton who"?
& America would be a better place.
"You can't really have a meritocracy when no one agrees by what standard merit should be judged."
Meritocracy merit is judged by 2 basic criteria as far as I can tell.
1)You got into a prestigious school. The more prestigious, the more merit.
2) You loved and still love Barack Obama unconditionally. If you love Obama you are absolved of America's original sin and have ascended to a higher moral plane. If not, you are a racist pure and simple. All other merit is cancelled out.
Obama himself is king of the meritocracy because he went to the most prestigious school and no one loves Obama more than he does.
“Meritocracy?”
Think Obama, the Clintons, Biden, Beto, Occasional-Cortex, Bernie, etc., and cry, “Bullshit!”
It sounds like he was a nice guy, but no one misses his presidency.
I am so tired of these stereotypes (left and right). So many derive from the Eastern perspective on the world. I left the “back East” 40 years ago, briefly spent time in the Midwest and ultimately made it out West.
Always worth remembering that when Michael Young coined the term in The Rise of the Meritocracy, he was not describing a good thing. He was predicting what The Bell Curve demonstrated 40 years later.

No. Nostalgia is the original fake news.
We still have LL Bean.
If we are now a meritocracy, what is it exactly that our current crop of would-be presidents bring to the table? What is the merit demonstrated by the likes of Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders? Can anyone point to a single accomplishment on the part of any these that has actually been of benefit to American society?
@Bob Boyd (8:21): Oh, that was perfect!!
“(he quotes Henry Adams’s fears of a “furtive Yacoob or Ysaac still reeking of the ghetto”),”
Henry Adams. Yeah, that’s relevant. In other news, Jefferson owned slaves and Kipling was an imperialist. Leftists aren’t just morons, they’re willful morons.
@hawkeyedjb:
Meritocracy is not really about who wins electoral contests. It is more about gaining access and entry into elite institutions like universities, media organizations, and big businesses.
It's a given that if you are a human being, then you come pre-loaded with prejudices. It's what you do with those prejudices that define your decency and fitness to govern.. There's no doubt that a certain amount of snobbery and bigotry are part of the haute WASP infrastructure, but there are more gates in the walls and more cork to the floor than in other such structures......Compare the WASP ascendency to the junckers , the boyars, the Bourbons and Bonapartists, the Brahmins and Moguls, the Bolsheviks, et al and the WASP ascendency looks very, very good by comparison.

It was more than that. I couldn't stand Daddy Bush. I was never going to vote for BJ Clinton, which left me with one choice, Perot. Either that or I wouldn't have vote for anyone to be POTUS. I detested McCain, and would never have voted for Obama, so I didn't vote for anyone for POTUS that year. Pretty sure that millions of other felt the same way. You have to earn my vote, just not just show up and expect my vote.
It is amazing how much Jewish creative products are a result of anti-WASP resentments.
We Jews are very good at remembering things - sometimes so good, that we can’t see changes.
"Meritocracy". I do not think Douthat knows what that word means.
"Americans miss Bush"
Americans do not miss Bush. Media figures are lamenting his passing, but what they really miss is what he represented or their own power. His was the last Presidency before media lost control of the narrative thanks to the internet.
I read Maureen Dowd's appreciation of the elder Bush. It was affectionate and sympathetic, and she let the President have all the best lines while describing their arguments. She noted that she came from a long line of Irish servants who were in domestic service to upper class Anglos like the Bush family. Oh, fuck off Maureen. You're the daughter of a police chief. You're not a child of some landless Irish peasant. Your ancient Irish grudge is a worse form of prejudice than any bit of snobbery on display in the Bush family.
When I think of missing Bush, I think of that Iraqi who threw a shoe at W.
@Pookie Number 2:
We Jews are very good at remembering things - sometimes so good, that we can’t see changes.
Larry David does a funny riff on the subject in an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm when he and Jeff are kicked out of their country club. Susie rejects Cheryl's suggestion of Beverly Park as only having "two fucking Jews in the whole place. It's WASP WASP Republican city." You can see the clip here and of Cheryl and Larry trying to fake their way in here.
Douthat is skating around some very important and interesting points. He can't "go there", of course, because they're on the other side of the thought-border separating NYTland from the forbidden territory. So he's reduced to some banal observations about "good" elites, the larger implications of which are made to evaporate under the requisite "racism blah blah bigot blah blah racist" evil-eye deflecting incantations.
On the other hand, it's not as if the old WASP elite caste were unwillingly turned out by usurpers. They're still there. The existence of today's broader not-fit-for-purpose "elite", and the whole goofball internationalist, diversity-is-our-strength, let's-scapegoat-whites, let's-destroy-the-West clown show is their own fond project played out to its predictable end, regardless of their inability to acknowledge or even understand this.
"because we miss the WASPS — because we feel, at some level, that their more meritocratic and diverse and secular successors rule us neither as wisely nor as well."
This is third-variable stuff. A lot that was good about GHWB - decency, sense of duty, putting others before self - can be traced to the best ideals of his upper-class WASP upbringing, but you don't have to be an upper-class WASP to raise your kids that way. You just have to buy into the idea that those are traits worth instilling.
There was an old New Yorker cartoon showing a father explaining to his son:
"New money is old money that got away"
His unbearable whiteness of being...
The "WASP elite" is mostly an invention of Jewish novelists nursing resentments, along with a few potato blighters with their Irish up.
Seems like this fella doesn't know what the word "meritocracy" means. He seems to be implying that diversity and secularism have something to do with meritocracy. But of course the forced diversity of affimitive action is the opposite of meritocracy. The progressive policies pushed by Barack Obama, other Democrat politicians, most pundits in the mainstream media, and even some elite Republicans... they amount to wealth redistribution and are the exact opposite of meritocracy. And the outright socialist ideals of many up-and-comers in the modern Democrat party are definitely the opposite of meritocracy. The entire modern DC ruling classes complete disdain for working class rural middle America is the opposite of meritocracy.
Fire and ice. The arrogance of the ruling class. The resentments of the underclass. They both need seasoning........The worst forms of prejudices are those that people embrace as ideals.......The sufferings of my ancestors that cry out for redress. The reputation of my ancestors that I must live up to. The melting pot becomes a fine stew.
Meritocracy?
Oh, perhaps he meant to say...
Meretricious (merəˈtriSHəs) adj: apparently attractive but having in reality no value or integrity; relating to or characteristic of a prostitute.
It was the culture the WASPs created based on Western civilization that was successful. Anyone can participate in that culture, but it's not nearly as fun as popular culture, and so is rejected by most today.
@ EDH
Brilliant!

"We used to train our children to think critically."
What makes you think this was ever true?
Some of us miss the "civility" but not the incompetence. If it takes someone with a big mouth to fix things then i'll buy earplugs. "It's not what he says, it's what he does."
Frankie foer, who fronts scott beachamps slanders and innuendos, is of course an idiot,
Jew... White privilege was a popular early to mid-twentieth century concept with progressive consequences. Its advocates were notable for their Pro-Choice, selective, opportunistic, politically congruent religious/moral/legal philosophy, that, among other things, engaged in elective regime changes, opened abortion fields, forced refugee crises, and denied life they deemed unworthy. As for diversity or color judgments/discrimination, color before character denies individual dignity, and is the antithesis of meritocratic sensibility.
The place to learn critical thought is the high school band. You're forced to play for all sorts of political events and assemblies. They're all crap.
Watching the Bush funeral. Very Classy and quick moving.
Makes the McCain family look like vulgar assholes.
Which they are.
Critical thinking is for losers who wallow in pipe dreams. Simple thinking using first principles is what solves problems.
As the "WASP's"
First most the WASP weren't.
JFK = Irish Catholic. LBJ = Scotch-Irish. Hoover/Ike = German. Reagan = Irish.
Ford/FDR/TR = Dutch.
Second, someone has to be the 'elite'. Right now, are 'elite' seems to be a combo of Jews & Irish Catholics with a few blacks, rednecks and a WASPs thrown in.
Look at the SCOTUS, 1 Black Catholic, 4 white Catholics, 3 Jews and 1 Hispanic.
The Bush funeral is insufferable pap. Can't tune away fast enough.

"We still have LL Bean."
Not really from the reviews I've read the last few years. Sort of like the meritocracy now without the merit.
These people are all just writing for each other. Who else cares?
Ha, I found a Rush affiliate not carrying the Bush funeral I think. You need a small station with a news director without enough budget to do any damage.
Alan Simpson going on a little too long.
There must something in the DC water. Dole and Carter look incredibly good for 94. Simpson is 87 and hasn't changed in 20 years.
Unfortunately there's a guest host for Rush, and he promises to cover some of the funeral. Apparently it's an ongoing nationwide mania in the judgment of the sales department.
...also, GHWB could get the office on merit, no? What is more merit-based about Obama than GHWB? The man was a war hero when he didn't need to be. Are we saying he got where he was not based on merit?
Did George Bush get the Presidency on merit?
I suppose so. But he had powerful friends who helped him every step of the way. Nixon made him head of the RNC, and then Ambassador to China. Ford made him CIA Director. And the Republican Establishment forced Reagan to name Bush as VP to unify the party.
Then Reagan - not too subtlety - let it be known he favored Bush, which allowed him to be nominated in 1988.
In 1992 when he ran on his own, he got hammered. Just like he did the two times he ran for the Senate.
Elitism/meritocracy??? What crap.
My son worked very hard in school. BS, MS in Engineering. He desired to go to U of Pennsylvania for his MBA. Scored off the charts on the entrance exam. We were advised we needed to know someone. We contacted a friend, who had a friend on Wall St. All for naught.
So when I look at Barack the Magnificent, I just shake my head.
He was a good man. And a bad President.
Bush choking up.
Good speech.
"She noted that she came from a long line of Irish servants who were in domestic service to upper class Anglos like the Bush family. Oh, fuck off Maureen. You're the daughter of a police chief."
The police are servants of the wealthy
Bush funeral, lots of Christianity.
With McCain it was all mean-spirited politics.
Its funny how some Jewish and Irish writers when they talk about the WASP's always end up talking about the Jews and Irish.
If it's in the NYT,I consider it bunk.
Vietnam was the product of the WASP establishment.
I thought Dole looked terrible. But maybe he looked good back when he was 94.
The police are servants of the wealthy.
It's difficult not to be a servant of the wealthy.
Not a huge fan of the Bush family, but I gotta admit that was a good eulogy by W.
In contrast to the politeness of everyone else, Hillary Clinton refused to acknowledge the arrival and greeting of President and Mrs. Trump as they joined the other presidents sitting in the front row of the George H.W. Bush funeral at the National Cathedral.
She’s the gift that keeps on giving.
Look at the SCOTUS, 1 Black Catholic, 4 white Catholics, 3 Jews and 1 Hispanic.
Reminds me of former Secretary of Interior James Watt saying, regarding the diversity of his coal panel department, "I have a black, a woman, two Jews and a cripple."

See, this is what comes of Americans going to war to avenge bad stuff that happened in other people’s countries that was other people’s business.
And many here are still butt-hurt that Hillary isn’t ordering our military hither and yon in service to the contributors to her “Foundation."
@Mountain Maven:

A lot of criticisms can be leveled against WASPs, but I think "incompetence" would be far down that list. If we are to synonymize WASP with late 1950s bourgeois culture, has the period since then really been one of increased competence? If anything, I see it as exactly the opposite. A sort of pagan self-indulgence that has been an absolute disaster. Sure they can be more expressive about their gender fluidity and dress in unconventional ways, but can they afford to own a home and securely raise a family?
Hillary Wants Trump to Win Again. - Camille Paglia
Written before her oafish behavior at the funeral, BTW.
There's going to be ANOTHER Funeral in Houston.
I think that's three in total for Bush.
McCain had, what? Six?
Hillary Clinton refused to acknowledge the arrival and greeting of President and Mrs. Trump as they joined the other presidents sitting in the front row of the George H.W. Bush funeral at the National Cathedral.
How Deplorable.
LOL - Hillary - at least she had plenty of water and didn't fall down.
Merckle the German was there, but I didn't see her on TV.
Or Prince Charles. Maybe they were stuck in the back.
Nothing wrong with WASPs, IMO. I come from a long line of them.
Yeah, there's nothing wrong with WASP's until they sting you.
Now that the service is over, the talking heads are talking. I just heard someone (Todd?) on NBC say that breaking his no new taxes pledge may have cost him the election but that it was the right thing to do for the country. Why? Because eight years of prosperity under Bill Clinton followed raising taxes. They just can't help themselves. Couldn't believe my ears.
Like strangeloves salute, look how they used the failure to repeal Obamacare against republicans
I don't miss the Bushes, or Wasps. This is civility bullshit.
The one-party state brought us open borders, an overpriced health care system, the loss of our manufacturing class, billions wasted on global warming programs, solar power programs, and mass transit boondoggles (see California). They also degraded washing machines and light bulbs for bogus environmental reasons, tried to legislate science to force car manufacturers to increase gas mileage (until they had to cheat to meet the new standards), and evade all responsibility for criminality at the government level (see Hillary's use of top secret emails).
Now they're trying to steal back an election they failed to steal in the first place.
Fuck 'em.
Because eight years of prosperity under Bill Clinton followed raising taxes

"She noted that she came from a long line of Irish servants who were in domestic service to upper class Anglos like the Bush family. Oh, fuck off Maureen. You're the daughter of a police chief."
To which the always-brilliant Robert Cook comes back with: "The police are servants of the wealthy."
So the next time you're burglarized or mugged, Cookie, call a hippie.
Althouse quotes Douthat quoting Foer:

What do Foer (& Douthat) think that their ancestors were doing a century ago? Any chance that their ancestors were saying things about race & ethnicity that are unthinkable today? Maybe they held beliefs that might be objectionable today? My God, in 1918 they might have even believed that a woman's proper place was in the home, keeping house & raising children!
Another top FBI official who helped oversee the Trump-Russia and Clinton email investigations is retiring, as the last traces of the bureau´s embattled leadership team that once stood under Barack Obama´s presidency disappear. The official, Bill Priestap, will retire from his post as assistant director of the FBI’s counterintelligence division by the end of the year. “Assistant Director Bill Priestap became eligible to retire and has chosen to do so after 20 years of service,”
Another feel-good story. :^)
I agree with MoDo, we should let immigrants fresh from the shithole countries that they were so desperate to leave run the country we have built here while they are still fully imbued with the values and thinking that led their previous countries to be shitholes.
Let's define our terms. If "Elitist" means someone who enlists in the Navy at age 18, in the middle of a war, becomes a pilot and flies almost 60 combat missions, several of them after being shot down by enemy anti-aircraft fire, then I'd say being an "Elitist" is a pretty damn' fine thing!
Particularly when you contrast that Elitist with the draft-dodger who defeated him for re-election. In fact Clinton has the distinction of being the only draft-dodger to have defeated TWO genuine war heroes in Presidential elections.
Here's my proposal: I'm not going to praise Presidents that I like for being WASPS, and I'm not going to criticize Presidents I don't like for NOT being WASPS, and I suggest that all of us do the same. Racism is ugly even when the targeted race is White.
his counterpart at justice counterintelligence, david laufman, was the attorney for dr. ford's handler, monica mclean,
How can one claim meritocracy exists in the era of #MeToo?
