At the Getting-Ready-For-Thanksgiving Café...

DSC05178

... there you go.

I don't know what you're eating but you can buy Epic Turkey bars here and you can buy almost anything else you need at Amazon through The Althouse Portal.

This is an open thread — of course, with "Café" in the title — so talk about anything you want. I'm bored with the subject of Thanksgiving. Please don't imagine the topic to be restricted to the most talked-out topic of the week.

DJT today lost 2020 by going after CJOTUS. Next POTUS is Warren or Klobuchar.
Happy TG all.

Michelle Obama's book "sells" 1.4 Million copies in a week. Seriously? Or just another payoff?

I've bought the occasional book to support the author for political reasons. I don't suppose that I am unusual.

That Trump is not afraid to say the obvious and doesn't worship "royalty" is one of his good points.

Roberts is the one that looks like a clueless fool, not Trump.

Larry O'Conner on WMAL said something profound today. He said that it's amazing that for a population of 360M people, we will all basically have the same dinner tomorrow.

Likewise, Roberts said nothing when Obama bullied the Supreme Court on numerous occasions — and even appeared to yield to Obama’s pressure. In 2010, President Obama used his first State of the Union address to denounce the Court’s January 2010 ruling in the Citizens United case, which struck down restrictions on corporate political speech under the First Amendment. With six of the nine justices sitting silently in the House of Representatives, Obama told the nation their ruling “will open the floodgates for special interests, including foreign corporations, to spend without limit in our elections.” Democrats leapt to their feet in applause. Justice Samuel Alito mouthed the words, “Not true” — and never attended another State of the Union address. But Roberts said and did nothing to defend the Court from Obama’s unprecedented assault on its independence. In April 2012, when oral arguments in the Obamacare case (NFIB v. Sebelius) appeared to go against the administration, Obama warned the Supreme Court against overturning the law, attacking the very idea that “an unelected group of people would somehow overturn a duly constituted and passed law.” His aides later scrambled to explain that the president — once a lecturer in constitutional law at the University of Chicago — certainly accepted the idea of judicial review. But Roberts did not defend the court’s prerogatives. In fact, Roberts buckled, effectively rewriting the law to save Obamacare — perhaps even reversing his original vote.

All that angst, that money wasted, the thousands of hours of coordinated media, the petitions, the fake rape play acting, the fake polygraphs- all just to keep a one’s just the same as another supreme off the court.

The exception being PETA, who will dine on crabgrass and dandelion roots.

Roberts spewed out platitudes that not a soul across the political spectrum believes, because its not true.
President Trump is pointing out exactly what is happening in the 9th circuit. SCOTUS has warned the 9th circuit about their behavior.
Voters vote for politicians that eschew political safety to get the job done.

This is awesome. From Reuters .....

"The Trump administration plans to set up a side-event promoting fossil fuels at the annual U.N. climate talks next month, repeating a strategy that infuriated global-warming activists during last year’s talks, according to three people with knowledge of the matter."

Annual U.N. climate talks. . .
It would be fitting if they held their breath for five minutes. Doing their part to limit CO2 emissions.

Six minutes just to make sure.

Well the Beach Boys are the least political of all the major rock groups, but they *do* have a lot of experience with lawsuits, so you never know..

Today I had a long discussion about how to be more Catholic than the Pope without nailing 97 theses to a door.

The Avignon Popes were dominated by secular society, i.e. the King of France.

And there's another Pope who murdered his predecessor so that he himself could become Pope and proclaim Arianism. But then he decided Arianism was wrong.

These thoughts and historical analogies are passing through my mind, I sadly note.

The White Album thing even got airplay on the 6.00 radio news show after the national/international news. I am surprised by the amount of attention.
The anniversary they didn't mention - IMHO - is that it has been 1 year without Mugabe in Zimbabwe.
Or that the Ethiopian famine of 83/84 was this time 35 years ago. Which led the Brits to do the Do they know it's Xmas song, which then led to Live Aid the next summer, which included the famous scene re-done apparently in the F Mercury movie that a few in the office were going on about today in the lunchroom. Apparently the movie is good.
I tie the three together because the leader of the Communist party in charge of Ethiopia at the time of the famine fled to Zimbabwe and is still there. He also decided to kill a lot of the former political people in Ethiopia all in one day this time of year when he was first getting going back in the 70s. That may not be as big an anniversary cause the communist regime killed a hell of a lot of people over 15 years there.
Today's culture remembers well the singer - his epic performance - but little is said (or known) about the type of regime that induced the pain that led to the stage. I might even argue that BandAid/LiveAid was a symbol of a culture more prepared to believe in its own ability - a "confidence" if that is the right word - which could not be replicated 35 years on.
As one gets older, it is disquieting to see who seemingly gets away, or where the history-tellers and media-content providers seem not to give a figs leaf.

First: if people are so worried about climate change, then why so little discussion about using nuclear energy?

Second: objectively speaking, the world is in pretty good shape: fewer wars, less poverty, not so much epidemic disease—much to be thankful for. Our USA has just about no real military rivals and only a couple of economic ones. Meanwhile everyone wears jeans, watches Hollywood movies, listens to rock or hip hop, and eats Big Macs — cultural dominance.

Lucien... A few years ago the dems were calling for smaller families, population control, to conserve water and crop resources. Fewer households, cars etc. They aborted a great portion of their voter base. Now they demand third world immigration. Think they'll recycle anything, or will they change their oil on backroads. They live in the county parks round here. Lotsa solid waste too.

@Meade, turkey bars? That’s it, just turkey bars? You poor bastard. Can any of you denizens of Madison spare him a drumstick tomorrow?

I’d wish the two of you, and Zeus, a Happy Thanksgiving, but turkey bars?

Can’t wait until tomorrow. Grandchildren and in-laws galore at son’s new home on Lake Oconee. All we have tombring is a bouquet of cut flowers.

But spent today binge watching Jordan Peterson on YouTube. He has the Dragon Energy thing going.
