But if somehow a court would say that the test she did (allegedly) take is good enough, there would still be the question whether the result "shows [she's] an Indian." I don't think it does, but can you imagine Warren bringing a lawsuit and trying to convince a court that a DNA test indicating 1/32nd or only 1/1,024th Native American genes "shows you're an Indian"? I think it would be worth it to Trump to pay the $1 million to get her to do that.

If that's the case, it's because they were a lot less different than you think. I'm sure North and South American DNA is incredibly more similar to each other than to European - close enough for one to probably serve as a proxy for the other. That's the more likely explanation, since for a South American to have made their way up to wherever Warren's ancestors were is a lot less likely. Some of these tribes up this way are probably too few to have strong pools of reference markers, anyway.
From what I have read there are, in fact, some real weaknesses in the DNA analysis such as using South American DNA for comparison purposes. Does it matter? Not really. That Harvard disgraced itself and that Warren took advantage of Harvard's disgrace is, as Ann said initially, the really bad thing here.
The extent to which this harmless and interesting finding bothers the right wing is very telling about how poorly-adjusted they are when it comes to normal ways of understanding and accommodating heritage and history.

I was surprised to find from the Warren Report that the average European has some stretches of DNA that are characteristically "Native American." This raises the question whether EU citizens will be able to claim minority status in the USA if Warren is elected our first Native American President and EU citizens apply to an American university. But this can wait. Meanwhile the point is that Elizabeth Warren was always going to have some Native American DNA even if she was of unadmixed European descent. But Bustamente is claiming that Warren has MORE Native American DNA than the average European with NO Native American ancestors so she must have at least ONE native American ancestor. This estimate is based on the average amount of Native American DNA found in 185 Europeans selected for comparison by the Stanford profs.
But how much Native American DNA is really characteristic of unadmixed Europeans? How was the Stanford sample of unadmixed Europeans selected? Where were these unadmixed Europeans from? Some Norse and Swedes have Sami or Inuit blood and as Vikings they attacked and settled in Scotland and England. It may be the North British people, the Scots and others, and their descendants, like Warren, characteristically have more "Native American" DNA than Greeks or Italians.
And what behavior patterns go along with the Chromosome 10 variation that Warren has? Does it make you shout when you give speeches? Does it make you want to sort people into tribes and to attack the other tribes? This is what the Stanford profs are really studying so it's legit to ask the question.
So Inga and Ritmo are on the record as saying you can claim racial benefits if you are 1/1024 of a minority? That such a small drop of blood (actually, about 500 drops, if you take 1/1024 of the amount of human blood) is enough to make you a minority.
Then who isn't a minority? I myself think I had a black ancestor somewhere back along the way. I can get affirmative action now? Also, go back into the 1400's and there's a King of England too lurking amidst my ancestors. Can I claim part of the throne of England?
