At the First Frost Café...
... you can warm up inside.
It's going down to 29° tonight — and it was almost 80° a couple days ago — so it was the day Meade dragged the big avocado tree inside. He dismantled all the ferns too. It looks so empty out there now!

To turn on the heat or not? Always the question on mid October nights.
Hey Meade, what a guy!
Your floors look great, Althouse.
We haven't had frost yet, but something about the weather just destroyed my impatiens. They had been so glorious, bushing up to about 18"- just lovely mounds of bright color all year. Now dead green brown stalks.

So it goes this time of year. Sometimes in Texas a norther can drop the temperature 30 degrees in an hour or two.
Cocaine Mitch just got 15 Federal judges confirmed today.
I think today will be our last 70 degree day until next spring. The remnants of Michael are saturating the ground.
Mid 30's tonight, and rest of the week, a couple hundred miles due E/NE across the lake from Madison.. Favorite fern is in, the rest have to wait....for a frost. Big maple shed the rest of it's leaves overnight, and the big pines shed their needles.
I love fall.
South Carolina State Fair starts this weekend. That's very often the first cold snap of the year. Not frost though, not until after Thanksgiving.
It's going down to 73° tonight in my hometown.
And in another news, it was a terrible decision for the Trump administration to hand a blank check to the Saudis. Credulous commentators in the US have been far too kind to MBS and his reformist chimera. Rand Paul's efforts to halt arms sales and military assistance to the Kingdom are worthwhile pursuits.
First, let’s begin with the easy distinctions. There is a yawning legal and moral gap between First Amendment–protected activity, no matter how angry and boisterous, and a true mob. Screaming protesters picketing on a sidewalk are in a fundamentally different position from screaming protesters who invade private property to chase a senator from his meal. - National Review
Yeah, and an illegal border crosser is a different legal and moral thing than a legal immigrant, but don't expect the left to honor that distinction either.
Planning a 20 mile bike ride tomorrow afternoon while here at my home in GA. It will be 74 degrees and sunny. Perfect.
When the left-wing media is suddenly, without warning, beside themselves over a Saud that went missing in Turkey...
...more to the story-
its laughable that National review is asking average people to send them $$.
They've obviously been dancing to the Big Donor's tune for 15 years.
Every time I read NR, I think to myself "Who the hell is their audience?"
The answer: People who want open borders, bad trade deals, tax cuts for the rich, and wars in the middle east. That's why they supported Hillary in 2016. IOW, The Koch Brothers, Paul Singer, and Jeb Bush
Note: Kevin Williamson got fired by Atlantic Magazine, but it looks like David "Surrender Monkey" French is going to be their new "reasonable conservative"
What a wonderful day.The winds and rain last night blew the dust away and left a warm sun in a clear blue sky. But the traffic in Atlanta was extremely light, almost like the 1996 Olympics traffic. I suppose many left town this time early because schools closed, just because the Gulf Coast from Mexico Beach to Destin blew away last night. So they headed west to New Orleans/Baton Rouge to party a day early.
My stepson bought us 10 banana trees and potted them for us. We live in NW Pa. Needless to say, we haul them in every fall, which stunts their growth. No bananas. Probably never.
Going down to 73 here too. Hurricane just missed us to the West.
I love this time of year.

Looks like the beginnings of a long needed debate within the black community. "Herschel Walker calls for CNN to fire Don Lemon over ‘racist’ Kanye West criticism " (Fox News)
@Tank:

Just out of curiosity, where in Florida do you live?
Michael sheered a ~100 y.o. pecan tree at the ground in the hour of wind gusts we had today. The neighbor's electric line and my Dad's Buick are underneath it. Somehow, they still have power, but the meter is off the wall. Duke Power is busy elsewhere.
No frost due here in NC for awhile. We just went through our second hurricane in a month, but Michael was no big deal here -- just a lot of rain and a some wind. Temperatures for the next two weeks are predicted to be highs in the low 70's or high 60's (except for one day in the low 80's) and lows no lower than the mid-40's. I don't miss the cooler temps in Conn. where I grew up, and I certainly don't envy their taxes!
"He dismantled all the ferns too."
Scalia would be disappointed.
And, beyond the lame sentence w/ respect to sentenc-ing standards. The live-in gardener must know that ferns aren't dismantled.
Well that's interesting:

Snow showers in SE MN this AM. Zinnias and remaining Basil will die tonight. Tomorrow I can pull it all out, till, plant winter rye and breath a sigh of relief. Have to pick the last of the apples -Roxbury Russet and Keepsake - then I can shut the orchard down. Meanwhile the wood stove feels wonderful!

I certainly don't envy their taxes!
Then I hope you're not one of them Yankees that vote for more government and taxes down here after fleeing the taxes and bossiness they helped impose up there.
We had a low of 73 last night. I went for a walk and turned into a puddle. The humidity started a month early and lasted a month later than usual this year.

Another Farmer post that makes me wonder where his sympathies lie. Narciso has more information.
It looks all too pat, in light of khashiggi sympathies it followed the same narrative part of the Ritz Carlton affair.

Where they always lie. With Americans.
Narciso has more information.
I did not find the arguments or links from Al Arabiya that persuasive. The ones in Arabic I obviously have no way of judging. The quotes from Edrogan are meaningless. Of course Erdogan is going to take such a position. It would be insane for him to make definitive statements about an issue of such potential international implication. Turkish authorities have claimed to have audio and video recordings supporting their claims. We will have to wait and see. The case already comes on the heels of the Essam Al-Zamil case.
”The co-founder of the opposition research firm behind the Steele dossier, Glenn Simpson, will invoke his First and Fifth Amendment privileges to avoid testifying before Congress next week, his lawyer has told Congress.”
Wow, didn’t see that coming...

Yes, that is interesting. I had quit reading Al Arabiya because I was concerned it might provoke an investigation, LOL. I certainly agree that this event has been 'misreported' but how can we possibly know what really happened? It would seem the 'fiance' is a fraud, which is definitely a cause for alarm.
"It would seem the 'fiance' is a fraud, which is definitely a cause for alarm."
Well, you support a POTUS who has had to give back millions because of fraud, via US courts, so it's hard do see why something that you think would seem to be fraud would definitely be a cause for alarm.
Logic is tricky.
Al Arabiya is the Saudi Royal Family propaganda arm. These are the same people who bought and paid for the destruction of twin towers on 9/11. This makes me question Mike K's loyalty to the United States.
Yet you trust al Sabah or al Jazeeras affiliate, middle East eye which has proven unreliable.
I don't think the piece denies that cengiz was his fiance, but suggests that her loyalties are more to one side.
Perhaps Mock,
You'd be more consistent to say that it's ok for governments to kill journalists, if it means that more dough will go to the job creators. After all, that's the pass for DJT's fraud and lies and racking up US gov borrowing. E.g. the US gov borrowing more than eight grand per working person since DJT was elected.
Did you net out more than an additional eight grand comin' to you from the gov v what was gonna come to you via the gov, since the election? No, you didn't. That was a rhetorical Q.
The distribution of the benefits of the gov taking out loans don't work like that. You not a job creator. The gov borrows money to benefit job creators.
Duh.
Math is tricky.
Clench that sphincter 'Shitter.
Harrrd.
Then consider the shittier alternatives you have/would propose.
It will keep you regular.
Well..as much as possible in your case.

Hi fam. Believe women. Well, mine put me on medical leave, didn't pay me. She put my three dogs in foster care. These are purebred standard poodles. Inara is ten, and is my child. I felt her fear tonight, as darkness fell. Where was I.
My woman used the bond between Inara and I, against me. To hurt me. All women are cursed.

No wuckin' funder Hillary is talking about "a political party that wants to destroy what you stand for, what you care about." They're slowly closing in on the Clinton Crime family. Better get to the polls, Dems, if you want to save your precious Hillary from Congressional scrutiny.

Are folks taking bets re Althouse jabbering about Rosanne on JRE?
I think she'll skip.

Immunize that sumbitch! He's not the target. Force his ass to spill the beans!
The last week here in eastern TN were day after day in the upper 80s- that ended yesterday with the overcast and later rain from the remnants of Michael. It was still raining this morning, but the afternoon was gorgeous- cloudless blue sky and about 75 degrees. Today was really the day that it really felt like Fall.
In the wake of the remnants of Michael, the temperature in slower Maryland dropped from 80 to 57, and I had to switch from shorts to long pants.
Just a word of caution, folks. If you get in the habit of following narc's links, you will end up bombarded with ads for Depends and Canadian pharmacies

Likely never if you let them go dormant in a garage or cellar. The life cycle from sprouting the pseudostem until a mature banana fruit is well over a year. Unlikely ever to get a flower as well.

HI FAM, also I am the biggest damn Dodgers fan in the universe, former batboy, close personal friend to Steve Garvey (he may in fact be my dad), and I am going to be up in threads from now until the Dodgers close out your team. I'll be talking about how the hottest Jewish guy in forever was a Dodger, hahaha Hi fam!

I know what you mean. I much prefer the Single Hot Asian Women.
