"They know they got a problem tomorrow."

Jesus Aguilar, after the Brewers won today and (assuming the Cubs win today), speaking about tomorrow's tiebreaker game for winning the National League Central Division.

The Cubs are up 10-5 in the 8th inning. If somehow they lose, the Brewers win the division outright. That seems unlikely, and the game tomorrow will be at Wrigley Field (because the Cubs have the better record against the Brewers this season). [UPDATE: 10-5 is the final score.]

Thank you, Jesus, for the bulletin board material.

Astros beat the crap out of either team if they get that far.....

mccullough म्हणाले...

Should be fun. Rockies at Dodgers another good matchup. Losers play in Wildcard Playoff game.

Spiros Pappas म्हणाले...

Baseball is a brutal sport. Take, for example, the phenomenon of bean balls: a team exacts revenge for a hit batsmen by targeting an opposing player who was in no way involved in the underlying incident. This form of “vicarious punishment” is common in “honor cultures” (i.e., no matter how innocent, I will still kill someone else's brother to avenge my own brother's death). It's kind of cool for an otherwise dull sport.

(Brewers suck.)

Forecast for t-storms tomorrow in Chicago but mostly in the AM.

Probably. There is no parity between the NL and the AL.

mezzrow म्हणाले...

He's right. The edge always goes to the team that gets hot at the right time, and that's Milwaukee. On to Monday.

Eamus catuli. It'll be great - character all over the place on both teams, with the two best records in the National League. Nobody wants to be in that one and out game.

The AL should kill whoever gets through this year. This is like the year the Mets beat the Orioles, though. It's the National Pastime. In the Friendly Confines.

mccullough म्हणाले...

Regular season records are meaningless. In a 7-Game Series any of these National League playoff teams could beat any of the AL playoff teams and vice versa.

All the starting pitchers have thrown a shitload of innings during the season or been injured. Anything can happen. The best players can go cold for 5 games and the number 8 hitter can play like Willie Mays for 5 games.

Meade म्हणाले...

You might be right. But remember: it's not the size of the underdog small-market Brewer in the fight against the filthy rich big-market Goliaths; it's the size of the fight in the small-maket Brewer underdog.

Meade म्हणाले...

"Anything can happen. The best players can go cold for 5 games and the number 8 hitter can play like Willie Mays for 5 games."

So very true. For example, may I introduce to you the one and only 1990 post-season Mr. Billy Hatcher.

rehajm म्हणाले...

Its too easy to conclude the AL is better. NL didn’t didn’t have Orioles to pad their records. The have nots were very have not this season.

Meade म्हणाले...

The only thing that worries me is that you, my fellow Brew Crew fans, will get tired of all the winning. Because, to paraphrase a great American, a true genius, we're going to win. We’re going to win so much. We’re going to win at the plate, we’re going to win on the mound. We’re going to win so much, you’re going to be so sick and tired of winning, you’re going to come to me and go ‘Please, please, we can’t win anymore.’ You’ll say ‘Please, Mr. Meade, we beg you sir, we don’t want to win anymore. It’s too much. It’s not fair to everybody else. And I’m going to say ‘I’m sorry, but we’re going to keep winning, winning, winning, We’re going to make Baseball great again.

The NL won this year's interleague play, 158 to 142 games.

Cubs will start Jose Quintana who is 4-1 with a 2.17 ERA in six starts against the Brewers this season. Milwaukee is batting .177 against him and Yelich was is 1-for-11.

I like the Cubs' chances.

Mr. Majestyk म्हणाले...

Go Cubs! Having endured all those lousy Cubs teams while growing up in the 70s, I AM ENTITLED, or something like that.

I hate trash talk. Just shut up and do it. And if you don’t do it, it will be doubley good that you shut up.

Bricap म्हणाले...

Whatever the Cubs do tomorrow, this bullpen has all cardiologists on standby until further notice. For that reason, I can't see them going all the way this year.

The Brewers do have momentum, and played their best ball recently to get to this point. The question for them is whether or not there is yet another gear, because this is a young and ascendant team. They might be dogs tomorrow just because of the Quintana factor and Wrigley, but I like them better when projecting further out.

Exactly. I don't even know why they should get so excited, they're just choosing who gets to lose to the Yankees.

320Busdriver म्हणाले...

Cubs havent had a day off in like 2 weeks

I like the Crews chances tomorrow.

And if not, I will be at MP on tuesday anyway..

320Busdriver म्हणाले...

Looks like Yelich will walk aboard, crazy to pitch to him now.

Original Mike म्हणाले...

”...they're just choosing who gets to lose to the Yankees.”

I’ll give the players one thing; they at least have a personal stake in blowing their mouth off.

Mark म्हणाले...

The winner gets the division title and a playoff spot.

The loser gets a playoff spot.

Same with LA and Colorado tomorrow.

Bay Area Guy म्हणाले...

Where are all the A's fans? Low budget, no name players, crappy stadium in Oakland- and yet?

Let's Go A's!!!

320Busdriver म्हणाले...

Hoping for a few good innings from Chacin
then a steady diet of another 6 or so bullpen guys. Take your pick. Hader will be part of it.

Patrick म्हणाले...

Meade FTW!

mccullough म्हणाले...

Quintana owns the Brewers until he doesn’t.

Yu Darvish owned the Astros when he was on the Rangers.

When he pitched for the Dodgers against the Astros in the World Series, it threw batting practice. Darvish shit the bed when it mattered and the Astros hit when it mattered.

mccullough म्हणाले...

BAG,

Kris Davis hit .247 for the fourth straight season. That is incredibly consistent.

And third straight season of over 40 homers and 100 RBIs. He does some major damage.

The A’s totally picked the Brewers pocket in the Davis trade.

Chuck म्हणाले...

I’m thinkin’ that if the a cubs win tomorrow, then there could be another series or two where they could invent multiple ways to blow baseball games. But then again, there is no better or dramatic way to blow your season than in a single game playoff.

You can do it Cubbies. Give us a Northside loss in historic fashion.

Patrick म्हणाले...

The Brewers too of course!

PackerBronco म्हणाले...

If they can use a tiebreaker to decides who plays at home, why can't they use a tie breaker to determine who wins the division?

mccullough म्हणाले...

Because the two teams don’t play the same number of games against the same teams. The Cubs played the White Sox six times this season. The Brewers played them three times.

As for overall intra-division record, the Pittsburgh Pirates were the best team in the NL Central at 43-33. The Cubs and Cardinals were 41-35, the Brewers were 39-37, and the Reds were 26-50.

Why aren’t the Pirates the NL Central champs?

Original Mike म्हणाले...

Use the head-to-head between the Brewers and the Cubs to break the tie.

Leland म्हणाले...

A tie-breaker between the two top records in the NL. The loser goes to a one game playoff in the NL wildcard. The tie-break winner waits for the winner of the NL wildcard game.

The NLDS will be interesting.

Meanwhile, the 103 win Astros will play the 91 win Indians.

Personal stake? What is fandom if not personal? They certainly have a *financial* stake.
