Are they going to say "time's up" suddenly in 7 minutes when the deadline hits?

ADDED, 2 minutes after the hour: No word yet.

Meade is watching MSNBC right next to me, and the people on that channel are freaking out, while nothing is happening.

ME: "Why do you watch MSNBC?"

MEADE: "Because they're the most extreme."

I mean, that's what a deadline means. I still distinctly remember someone failing a midterm because they were told they only had a 15 minute grace period and they showed up 16 minutes late.

Deadlines have meaning. Yes.

Did you give students extra time for finals?

Did Debra Katz get special deals for law school exams in Madison? NO.

Matt Sablan said...

Just saw some of her demands:

* Wants to testify second and Kavanaugh to appear first;
* Doesn’t want Kavanaugh in the room at the same time with her;
* Prefers not to be questioned by outside counsel, but rather by the senators on the committee;
* Would like the committee to subpoena Mark Judge, the other student Ford alleges to be in the room at the time of the assault, to testify;
* Says each senator should have equal time questioning (already committee practice);
* No time limit on her opening statement; and
* Will appear at a public hearing but she would like to limit the number of cameras to pool coverage.

So, my questions: Why not subpoena the third person she named, who ALSO doesn't remember? Why just the other person she's accusing who is a known drunk?

Also: What is Kavanaugh going to testify about? "What do you say about the accusation leveled against you by your accuser?" / "Nothing else, for now, I guess, since there's nothing new for me to respond to."

mccullough said...

They should just stay silent. No more responses.

Get back to her in 36 years.

Dude1394 said...

Shouldn’t they? Did you expect your students to turn in assignments on time? Or were you okay with them negotiating the terms of when, how and in what fashion they submitted work.

The problem is they have to be willing to take the oncoming hit from the democrat media arm, which will come no matter what they do. Flake and corker seem especially susceptible.

Matt Sablan said...

-- A lot of professors were, if there were good reasons and done ahead of time (or an emergency promptly noted.) I know plenty of people who got make up exams, etc. But, the difference was that they were trying to work *with* the professor, not against them. Which is vastly different than how Ford's legal team is working with Congressional Republicans.

Followed up by: "Or we can come to you. Or we can do it on the phone. Or submit written Q&As. Whatever makes it easiest on you, we'll do. Just, let's talk, OK?"

Oddly enough, by rolling over and giving her whatever she wants, Grassley made it clear the one thing she doesn't seem to want: To actually talk to Congress.

Yes, that's totally logical. Because none of the men in Congress are *ever* hysterical, emotional, or irrational. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever seen a man play the victim card or refuse to play by the rules, either. He was accused of sexual harassment by a single woman, but the charges have not snowballed. I'd be inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt since there's just that one allegation. I'd like to ask the various Morning Joe sages whether they believe atom Brokaw should keep his emiritus status or whether he should be banned from future NBC appearances.

I've been chained to my computer doing work and half watching TV news.

Its an eye opener.

All the details that make Ms. Ford's allegation Bullshit, are left out by TV talking heads. They just skip over them. So, people who just watch TV News, think the allegations are credible, and we're just arguing over who to believe.

So, its puts the R's in a box. The average low information female voter, can't even name a SCOTUS Judge. They know nothing of criminal law. So, if the R's don't cave on ALL Dr. Ford's crazy demands, the D's and MSM will say the R's REFUSED To let her testify.

Once the R's got on their hands and knees and BEGGED her to testify, they opened themselves up to blackmail. They HAVE to do whatever she asks. So, it'll probably be next Thursday or Friday. Which means the vote will be a week after that, and the Senate Vote two weeks after that.

This Krisis has already had its tawdry fifteen minutes of fame.

It is time to move on to far more urgent matters: Wackygate.

A candidate in the Nevada senatorial race -- specifically, one Jacky Rosen -- stands accused of wackiness. Is this alleged wackiness a scurrilous smear, or a legitimate and worrying character flaw?

How wacky is Jacky?

Given that this race is to represent Nevada, could it possibly be that Jacky, though wacky, is not actually wacky enough?

Are Dean Heller and Trump to be condemned for targeting the wacky? Given, again, that this is the notably wacky Nevada, will their efforts backfire?

For your convenience, I have created a brief analysis of the issue in a previous Althouse thread: https://althouse.blogspot.com/2018/09/kavanaugh-is-great-intellect-great.html

You're welcome.

Time's up for AMERICA if we don't do something about wackygate (or wackyquiddick. Not sure which one is more appropriate)

Even as we speak The ugly face of wackyphobia runs rampant through our nations politics, unfairly branding those who, through no fault of their own, are identified as "wacky". The stigma has already been applied to "Wacky" Jacky Rosen, a candidate in the Nevada Senatorial race, by no less a person than our very own President!

For too many years, the wacky have been stigmatized by the oppressive crush of the un-wacky majority. I would say their voices have been silenced, but let's be fair here -- do you know how hard it is to get someone who is wacky to shut up for two minutes?

She might be afraid a witness shows up who knows the truth. The year issue is a weakness she tried to handle by being vague. I suspect Kavanaugh has a moment by moment diary of the summer when she was 15.

If he goes first, she can say, "Oh no. It was the next year."

Exactly Freeman. Why didn't they just say they need the ability adjust their lies so they can fit his timeline?

Matt Sablan said...

There is no reason for Kavanaugh to testify if she isn't there; he shouldn't provide a diary even if he had one. All they'd do is point to any time he went to a party and say: "Of course he wouldn't write 'failed to rape someone' in his diary! But look, he DID go to a party in maybe the summer of 1982!"

Yancey Ward said...

Grassley probably won't comment on the deadline. He is most likely to just say the committee will meet on Monday with an open invitation. When she doesn't appear on Monday, that will be the end of the matter.

Yancey Ward said...

Kavanaugh should go first, but simply refuse to answer any questions about the accusation until she testifies. Then wait to rebut. It is obvious that the demand Ford's attorney made is an attempt to shape her own testimony to fit his, but that would be illogical, and most Americans are going to understand this- you can't defend yourself from a charge unless you know what you are defending against specifically.

Francisco D said...

Probably Flake and Corker are making demands. But Mitch McConnell can handle that sort of thing and he says Kavanaugh will be confirmed.

I definitely don't think Kavanaugh should agree to turn Senate hearings into the college Title IX type of kangaroo court which Holton Arms Grad DeBlasey wants.

To get from Columbia Country Club to anywhere you need a car and to get from anywhere in Bethesda-Chevy Chase (scene of her imagination) to Potomac (where De Blasey lived) you also need a car. There no buses with that route and no taxis cruising in that area. De Blasey was 15 and did not have driver's license and in those days there were no cell phones. She was driven to the country club and driven to the party - by who? Who in her list had a driver's license, a car and a membership in that country club? And - when she ran out of the house (with her purse?) how how did she get home? Who did she call and how did she do it in that residential area (I know it well) which was without pay phones? She did not call her parents. A neighbor might very well have taken her in and allowed her to phone having heard her story. But that neighbor would have called her parents, if not the police, or notified the owners of the house where the party was held. That isn't an area where you can burst into houses with stories of an attempted rape at an on-going nearby party where another girl is still there alone, use the phone, and head out again in a taxi (which will take quite some time to come) without any further notice taken by the neighbor. That's what privilege is. You can't drop a beer can on the sidewalk in that neighborhood without being tracked down and called out, let alone run drunk and emotional through the streets with your clothes disarranged and a story of attempted rape and requests to use the phone. Publicity can be avoided, police can be avoided but not reports by neighbors to other neighbors or to parents or to the schools.
