I have a very negative reaction to these pictures of Donald Trump Jr. showing off "his new girlfriend" Kimberly Guilfoyle

"Donald Trump Jr. has taken his new girlfriend Kimberly Guilfoyle to her first official White House event on the Fourth of July. Don and Kimberly have been dating since late March, around the time Trump Jr. and wife Vanessa, 40, announced their split. They have since made a number of public appearances together..."

The Daily Mail says, with lots of pictures.

Junior is not even divorced yet. He and his wife have 5 children.

He should be more discreet. Which, I know, obviously doesn't sound like a Trump concept.

I like to read the most-disliked comments at The Daily Mail. In this case: "I think they are a perfect couple! His soon to be ex wife seems stuck up and probably a liberal elitist," "Cutest. Couple. Ever," "They look cute together. It's working for them right now, and that's what matters."

She is good looking and old enough not to get pregnant so I see the attraction on his part but both of them are being foolish for different reasons. That sums it up. With Trump, the tendency is to focus on his tweets, his tone, his temperament, his family, his son's new girlfriend -- almost anything but his policy enactments.

Do I really care who junior is dating or whether his marriage is faltering?

Not much.

Bay Area Guy said...

Also, a divorce with 5 kids sounds horrific. Who's gonna be a stepfather to that brood?

But then I pause. Money cures a lot of problems. Young Don probably has at least $50 or $60 Million to his name, much more coming when his father passes. They can hire a buncha nannies and tutors and have all sorts of splendid summer vacations.

Not.worthy.of.concern.

Did I ever tell you guys I was in the hospital with Ethel Kennedy? No?

Well, my Dad's family settled with other Lithuanians in New Britain, CT when they got off Ellis Island. Many many years later, Dad took us on vacation to Cape Cod.

Back then, ant poison was a sickly sweet liquid in a metal bottle. Apparently, I found the bottle under the sink and drank it. Son, a civil marriage is a prenuptial on the State's terms. If you want to eliminate the State's terms, fine, but then you would have the contractual marriage terms of whatever confession the marriage is held under which would necessitate they be upheld by the civil courts. Atheists who have a civil commitment presumably would be subject to civil contractual obligations. And single mothers and deadbeat dads would still be a burden to the taxpayers.

Do you really think it would be possible for a Trump to actually be discreet in this scenario? I mean, he may try to be, but the paparazzi and the rest of the wonderful media is going to be all over it anyway. In fact, they're likely to be more aggressive if he tries to be discreet. In practice, the only way a Trump could be discreet in this scenario would be to not date at all. Which might be a good idea, but that's a totally different thing.

I'd say by allowing himself to be photographed in public and not hiding things that he's de-fanging the media as much as possible.

Absent abuse or addiction (and no, not just bent feelz), I would like to see ANY kind of statistics backing that up.

Because the stats are in and a pair of fighting parents would have to be absolutely miserable to match the enormous statistical sewer that being a single mom is on the welfare of the child. Abuse, addiction, crime, grades, poverty. Single moms tend to be leading the pack on those fronts. (Yes, not all. Some single parents do amazingly well. I lived next to one. But as Chris Rock said about single parenting and driving with your feet: "You might be able to do it but that doesn't make it a good idea!")

This sounds like a rationalization that women tell themselves when they pull the trigger on 70% of divorces: it's for the children! It isn't a horribly selfish thing to at all.

So color me skeptical.

Michael K said...

I agree but many divorces are not resulting in poverty. The poverty issue comes up most with never-married women.

The blank slatists are out! But then, they're always out.

So how come (even taking into account the 15~20 years delay between "single mom [birth]" and murder) -

FBI: US Homicide Rate at 51-Year Low (2016)

The unbelievable rise of single motherhood in America over the last 50 years

and, rather than anecdotes and folk tales:

"Our results suggest that, for white children, the association between the number of family structure transitions [divorce and other disruptions] and cognitive outcomes is largely explained by mother’s prior characteristics [genes] but that the association between the number of transitions and behavioral outcomes may be causal in part. We find no robust effects of number of transitions for black children.
...
The earlier study suggests that diminished parenting skills and diminished relationship skills may co-vary, creating the appearance of a causal relationship between multiple transitions and some dimensions of children’s adjustment when, in fact, parental vulnerabilities cause both the transitions and the adjustment difficulties."

Who cares? Vanessa left him, so not sure why his running around with Kimberly is so awful.

Kimberly, formerly the wife of Dem frontrunner for California Governor Gavin Newsome, is smart, and a lawyer, and a smart lawyer. Also, she's known the Trumps for awhile.

The fact that she's a year older than Melania is weird, but Donald Sr.'s romantic escapades are pretty well known by now, and if he winds up with a daughter-in-law older than his wife, so what?

Meanwhile, Kimberly used to date Anthony Scaramucci (the Mooch), and she's half Puerto Rican, and fun on The Five,, so what's not to like?

I cringe for the five kids: the eldest one is 11 years old.
I find that terrible and absolutely contrary to what a father should do.
I don't belong in the same class of conservatives, sorry, my idea of family is totally different.

Vanessa Trump dated from 1998 to 2001 and lived together with Saudi prince Khalid bin Bandar bin Sultan Al Saud.[16] Vanessa Trump intended to marry him, but they broke up after September 11 attacks when he left the U.S. after his father was suspected of having indirect ties to the hijackers.

@Freeman Hunt - So what is he supposed to do if his wife left him? Enter a monastery? Take a vow of celibacy? Wait an amount of time determined by social science to render subsequent relationships not harmful to children? If modern kids are supposed to be able to handle Heather's Two Mommies why can't they handle Dad's Hot New Girlfriend?

It's about the kids.

Divorce is damaging to kids. It's not just about $$$.

It's not easy for kids to deal with complicated social relationships. It's hard when parents live in different homes and leave you -- the kids know they weren't enough to make parents happy in their home.

It's hard to have 2 different sets of rules. It's hard to deal with Mom or Dad's lover, socializing with step-siblings or the children of lovers who are pseudo-step-siblings. If Mom or Dad have kids with the new parent, kids from the 1st family can feel second-best.

Oso Negro said...

@ wwww - Yes. And nonetheless, despite everyone's good intentions, it happens ANYWAY. Initiated by women 70% of the time.

wwww said...

Oso Negro,

I am appalled by the divorce rate.

I know someone who initiated divorce because of a comb left out.

Oso Negro said...

@ wwww - I am ALSO appalled by the divorce rate. I am NOT appalled by a man trying to start life anew after his wife dumps him. I AM appalled by the number of women here who think that he should stay quietly at home instead of offend THEIR sensibilities.

Oso Negro said...

@ wwww - So what is the incremental impact on the children if he does or doesn't date? Is it so deleterious that men should be proscribed by law from dating after divorce? Or maybe divorce should be outlawed. I submit that there is no reliable body of evidence to argue that divorce with subsequent dating is more harmful to children than divorce without subsequent dating. So yeah, that pretty much leaves it to adult sensibilities. I do not think that our local feminists would tut-tut about a dumped woman going on dates, but if there is evidence of the same here in the blog archives, let it be summoned up.

If the divorce rate of the late 20th Century wasn't bad enough, mainstreaming homosexuality and forcing the marriage issue certainly ought to have been the end of bluenose prudery about dating when separated or divorced.

I'm reading a biography of The Black Prince. His grandfather, Edward II, had a homosexual lover and his mother, Isabel. after invading the realm with her lover, Mortimer, had the gay lover, Hugh Dispenser hanged drawn and quartered. Thus, he encountered the modern world of love and marriage in 1326.

Isabella also had his penis and testicles removed and burned. Not a lady to mess around with.

@Spanish black bear, I think "dumped" is too strong a word. Remember that some sick Lefty loon sent her an envelope filled with a white powder, which scared the Hell out of her. I don't think she'd leave him except that she doesn't care to be a target for the sick sort of people who would fake sending anthrax to the wife of the son of a President.

@wwww, divorce is damaging to kids, but so are physical attacks from people with no sense of shame nor proportion. Vanessa instituted divorce proceedings after the episode with the letter, not after finding an intern giving my a blow job.

Oso Negro,

I do not believe in divorce. I feel better about it when there are no kids involved. I think it is a sacrament, it's a sacred oath. It's about loyalty, and faithfulness. I am aware I do not hold a popular or common opinion in the 21st century.

I do not understand why people get married if they don't mean it. Husbands and wives are not random partners assigned by the marriage assignment robot machine. Too many people do not choose partners who are trustworthy and worth a sacred oath. Too many people do not tend to their marriage. They do not treat family as one's biggest investment, and your most valuable prize.

I do not think society and culture follow the law. Outlawing divorce would not help and serve to merely undermine respect for the law.

Dr. Laura Schlessinger advises that a divorced parent not introduce a lover to children until they plan to marry. Be discreet. Do not take lovers to public events. Do blank sake do not post pictures on instagram.

Brad Pitt is managing to have an affair with a MIT professor with little publicity. This behaviour works better for kids.

People say they disagree with divorce. They do not act like they disagree with divorce.

wwww said...

Big Mike,

I have not been discoursing about Donald Junior. All l know for a fact is that he's not being discreet about his relationship in taking it public.

However, if we're gonna guess about why the divorce happened, I suspect his affair with that woman from the Apprentice did not help. This is just a guess. I have no idea why they are getting a divorce.

Oso Negro said...

@ wwww - We are not disagreeing about divorce. But in this instance, what’s under discussion is dating afterward. I don’t think anyone is an expert in that field and certainly not Dr. Laura. She has no data, and is pulling stuff out her ass. Children don’t want anything to change. They don’t want their parents to divorce and they don’t want their parents to re-marry, either. It would be my observation that it is better to introduce the new person while dating, at less that way the kid has some period of time to hope it doesn’t work out. This opposes to having the sudden introduction of a new Mom or Dad. I find it perverse that our culture is fine with the killing of children in utero, just so long as you don’t upset the ones you don’t kill by acting like a normal heterosexual after divorce.

"Freeman Hunt - So what is he supposed to do if his wife left him?"

Right now, he isn't even divorced. He should be incredibly discreet, certainly not taking a new girlfriend to a White House event where there will be lots of cameras.

I'm glad my own father had better sense.

He violated the holy principle of progressivism: stability.

The negative reaction is due to the revelation of baby parts in a socially unaware, unapproved manner.

The children... Well, the children were kept in cages. They were separated from parents and predators identifying as "parents". They were lost on the trail of tears from known social justice zones (i.e. elective regime change, trial by sodomy and abortion, catastrophic anthropogenic immigration reform). They were ignored and exploited during their progress from South to North Mexico.

A veil of privacy... taxable commodities, and friendship with benefits. A liberal religious/moral philosophy (i.e. behavioral protocol). Social progress, normalized.

The thing to avoid is

1) Kids need time to transition. Haste is not good for kids in this situation.

2) It's a problem to introduce temporary step-mamas or temporary lovers or longer term girlfriends/boyfriends who eventually leave.

-bad example to suggest sex before marriage.

-kids need to see examples of stable relationships that last for a lifetime. Revolving door partners are a bad example.

-Worst of all: Kids get attached to lover/boyfriend/girlfriend.

The kids can no longer see the person after the parents break up. Kids learn the bad lesson that loving relationships are temporary, not eternal. Children may learn that relationships are transactional, when they should be learning that commitments exceed temporary needs.

In this case, once again, the desires of the adult trump the needs of the children.

In a world of legal abortion, rampant bastardy and no fault divorce Trump Jr. going on a date fuels your outrage?

Bad Lieutenant said...

As Robert Cook might say,

How do you know they're having sex? Who's to say that they aren't platonic friends acting for unknown reasons like Vanessa's security? Why couldn't they all be in on it together?

Vanessa could make enormous trouble for DTJ. The fact that she is not, should be the dog not barking in the night-time.

wwww said...

Gahrie,

I am not outraged by the post example. I've always been against divorce. I'm explaining why some of us think this behaviour can be damaging to children.

In my opinion, best practices for raising kids:

(1) don't get married, have children, then get divorced.

(2) If divorce is unavoidable, make it as easy on the kids as possible.

I've never seen such a lot of whatabout-ism in my entire life.

Serious evil exists in the world, like the rape and murder of children. That people have and will commit evil acts is not a good excuse for subpar parenting.

wwww said...

Bad Lieutenant,

I don't know. That's why I'm mostly speaking in abstractions about divorce & best practices in general.

I don't know anything about this particular family aside from rumours in the news, which is mostly celebrity news, notoriously false, and no way to judge anything.

The first world problems on this thread are truly awesome.

Oh the kids! The kids! Think about the kids!

Not much on here about the death threats from the left that caused the divorce.

Mike brought it up at least I believe.

The kids are living in mansions with millions spent on their care. I think they will be just fine.

Get a grip.

FIDO said...

The other issue is very simple:

Trump Jr. CANNOT keep ANY relationship he has a secret. He CAN'T be discreet. Period! The Press is out for blood.

I can just imagine the headline if he tried to keep it secret: 'DTJ in sordid affair with woman older than his mother in law'.

He went to a FIREWORKS event with a woman. He isn't grinding on her in public.

He isn't showing introducing her as 'Mommy Karen' as far as ANYONE knows.

We have zero idea that the kids even know about this. They are probably doing fireworks with mom.

So this is a tree falling in a forest with no one around...but we are supposed to be outraged that a tree fell.

***

And just to riff on what Mike said: History is replete with far worse things happening in life to kids...and the kids continued and prospered. Charlemagne never ever allowed his daughters to marry or move out...but magically they had kids anyway. HMM!

We have had kids get over gay dad. We have had kids get over WWII. We have had kids get over a loss of limb.

This is the 'shattered crystal' school of child rearing, instead of the 'broken bones grow stronger' school of thought.

In a perfect world, Vanessa and DTJ would not be targeted by Lefty wackos and hounded by the media to destroy their family. That wasn't allowed to happen, alas.

Since that is the case, this is his best second alternative. Though Karen probably isn't.

I found out my dad and late step-monster were getting married from one of her friends assuming I knew. But I was 27, so the scarring didn't occur until we realized everything she said and did was fucked up, thanks to Munchausens and borderline personality disorder. She would be thrilled that she can still piss me off 5 years after her death.

FIDO said...

That isn't scarring from dad having a relationship. That is scarring from a horribly toxic person and you don't need marriage to get those scars.
