She merely makes clear what the more astute among us have been saying for a while: the Democrats have become a party of left-wing extremism as spoiled rich children (she grew up in wealthy Westchester County and interned for Ted Kennedy) play at being Che.

OT but I wanted to hit a current thread.

I have been contributing to Althouse monthly for a couple of years and using the Althouse Portal at Amazon. Finding that my money was being spent on Kathy Griffen, who I abhor, and Cher, whose politics I abhor, I decided that it was money being poorly spent by the payee and have stopped my monthly payments and removed the Althouse Portal bookmark. If Janus can be freed from paying for political positions he doesn't support so can I.

I was disgusted and I took the steps necessary to express that disgust.

And what's with bathing her image in lavender? Is it supposed to mean that she is gay friendly? That she transcends red and blue? Is it some new look for today's Latinx on the move?

Another Democrat demonstrates her depth and convictions. Children are impoverished and she is hawking lipstick.

@ Khesanh. I would reconsider. This is the best political forum on the planet. Give our hostess some slack here, she's earned it.

Humperdink, I used to make all of my Amazon purchases thru her Amazon portal, but then my comments started to be deleted, and I never made another purchase again. Maybe you could pick up the slack.

She is just what the Dems have been dreaming of ...a female Barack Obama...looks and sounds good but kinda dopey and has limited real world work experience.

I did think AO-C looked kind of expensive for a challenger from the left.

This is the real reinvention of the Dems: forget Millennials, take blacks for granted, make a big play for soap opera women and Hispanic men.

But what is leftism coming to? Did anyone ever ask Marx about his favorite shaving cream, or Lenin about his favorite brand of tobacco, or Mao about where he got those cool suits?

Oso Negro said...

@Sebastian - I doubt Marx had a clue what shaving cream was intended for, Lenin didn't smoke, and Mao wore fatigues. But you knew all that.

@Humperdink My action was not meant to reflect on the quality of Ann's work on the blog. My action was to show that I disagree with how she used my money. She invited my disgust and I chose this method to display it. I have done the same thing with my Alma Mater.

Breezy said...

Contrast those red lips with Trump’s power red tie... same idea, different form.

Someone is going to dig up that her lipstick is made with child labor or the process is bad for the environment or a company exec harassed a female or something.

Ann Althouse said...

"... but then my comments started to be deleted..."

Not sure what that refers to. I delete comments when they interact with another commenter whom I always delete. Other than that, I don't know. What? Did you put up the first comment on a new post and talk about something that had nothing to do with the post.

If you mean to insinuate that I delete because of viewpoint you are absolutely wrong. You should make it clear that has NOT happened to you. You can make your own decision to use the Amazon portal or not, but you should not be creating the impression that I do something that I do NOT do, so please specify what was deleted and why that deserves retaliation against me. Alternatively, apologize.

Ann Althouse said...

Once the money is in my hands, it's my money. That's something I like about money. It's an important part of freedom.

@ Ann I agree that when you have it you have freedom to spend it. That's why I stopped providing my portion. You can spend yours or someone else's but not mine. You threw down the challenge, I took the action I felt appropriate.

For you folks getting all out of sorts on Althouse' trip to Chicago, remember she does lots of things so we don't have to but shares them for our benefit and the blog discussion.

Have you previously complained that she subscribes to the NYT? I didn't think so.

@Denno You make a good point, but I will argue that she would subscribe to the NYT for herself whether she were blogging or not. I suspect she has a subscription to that and the New Yorker since she resided there. As a parallel, I agree with a lot that goes on at Harvard, but because of key issues where I think the university is completely wrong I refuse to give it any more of my money.

Sebastian said...

"@Sebastian - I doubt Marx had a clue what shaving cream was intended for, Lenin didn't smoke, and Mao wore fatigues. But you knew all that."

Kidding, kidding. Though Marx did shave off his beard at the end.

There she goes again, with her white privilege and bourgeois materialism.

I take it our hostess is not on board with the reinvention of the you-didn't-build-that Dem Party as full-blown socialist.

Your money is yours when they tell you. Freedom must bow before equality.

Anyway, welcome to the GOP, where we like that you like money as part of freedom--heck, where we like freedom, period. Speech, association, religion, enterprise--you name it. (Now don't go bringing up trade--touchy subject right now.)

I like "she Guevara"; I was thinking of her as Miss Venezuela. Lipstick as revolution.
I read a comment somewhere about Crowley losing to She Guevara - "he certainly had another 4,000 votes; he just didn't realize he needed them." Politicians in a democracy not knowing what the people are up to is a new trend; it goes along with fake news and push polling. I think we have fake revolution going on. It reminds me of the "yellow journalism" at the beginning of the Twentieth century and how it worked people up to a frenzy, screaming "Remember the Maine" and caused the Spanish-American war. Well, the symbols of leftism are being similarly manipulated by people with no real need for a revolution, no real understanding of hunger and thirst, let alone hungering and thirsting for justice. Current leftism is a career and people train for it at Organized to F___ America seminars which round off lectures with safari protest adventures at actual wildlife meeting holes (contact with actual American dirtbags guaranteed). And so we have our town meetings and groups and sports and picnics invaded by small noisy groups of political innocents led by a eager-beaver careerist showing off her / his organizing chops to potential bosses by being loud about the atrocity du jour. Hoping, hoping for the big one coverage by NYT. Walk away, walk away.

Apparently Inga has just realized different people have different principles and judgments. Since she takes her principles from a listserve that has never occurred to her until now.

What is up with people questioning how our hostess spends the money she makes via Amazon. First, I highly doubt these are big spenders. Next, I wonder if they know what a pittance she receives per Amazon buy. Finally, there are a thousand better ways to exhibit assholery than to quibble about this. We are all owed a huge debt to Althouse for hosting this blog, seeking out interesting topics that attract a very sophisticated and accomplished commentariat. It is a colossal pain in her ass to do this heavy lifting. A little gratitude, please.

Yesterday's music post was one of the best ever. Haydn, a favorite of mine, has gone up another notch since I discovered the Baryton trios as a result of following on to comments by Michelle Dulak Thomson. Buwaya reminded me of Unamuno. Michael K always has interesting reads that are worth buying and reading.

I am forever grateful to Althouse for just that one post.

Why if his comments were deleted must Allen apologize for saying so, or apologize for NOT reading your mind? If he had misread your mind I can see asking for an apology, but you demand that he assure us what was or was not in your mind.

No, just spiteful and petty covered by a thin veneer of principal.

Ann Althouse said...

“Why if his comments were deleted must Allen apologize for saying so, or apologize for NOT reading your mind?”

I don’t like a nonspecific attack on me for deleting comments. It creates the impression that I delete in an unfair or viewpoint oriented way which I do not. I am extremely permissive in the expression I allow.

He came back to complain that he was deleted, he believes, for making a personal attack on another commenter. It is true that I sometimes clear out stupid back and forth attacks that are just boring and personal. It’s clutter that hurts the readability of the blog.

You should apologize for burdening me and other readers with such useless crap, not whine and announce that you’re trying to hurt me by depriving me of a few dollars.

So lame! You should be embarrassed. Pathetic.
