Pompeo had a Press Conference at 5:00AM EST. He is perfectly relaxed and confident. It was obvious that The Deal has already been made. Kim is now a Trump ally under Trump's protection from China.

But Pompeo set the table for the desired World media coverage by stating that "... there are only two men in the world who can make the denuclearization deal when they meet in a room tomorrow."

That magnificent Bastard is setting the context to become Emperor of the World. Boy will Obama be jealous.

By any reasonable account, "Trump Derangement Syndrome" has become a favorite theme of Althouse. She enjoys reading the New York Times, and seeing what they get wrong, in terms of details or tone or language usage or even journalistic methods, standards and ethics.

She does the same, on a lesser scale than the Times, with WaPo, MSNBC, CNN, etc. With a blogger's goal of exploring what the Trump critics, and particularly the Trump-opposing parts of the mainstream media, get wrong about Trump and Trump's messaging.

"Trump Derangement Syndrome" (like Bush Derangement Syndrome) is of course nothing more than a moniker for criticism of Trump that is so pathological as to be symptom of derangement. I saw lots of Bush Derangement Syndrome, which is to say that it was criticism of a type that was out of character with anything but partisan hatred.

With Trump, there is much for which to criticize Trump, way beyond mere partisan or ideological disagreement. Trump is an asshole; and a liar. Trump got through the Republican primaries with less than a majority of the votes cast, and he got through the general election with less than a majority of the votes cast. But he won. His electoral victory was as clear as it was narrow.

I have lots of criticisms of Trump. I don't think any of my criticisms are "deranged." I really wonder, about Althouse's deployment of "Trump Derangement Syndrome as either a term of art, or a rhetorical weapon. Althouse does it to such an extent that I am always on the lookout for her tagging things with "Trump Derangement Syndrome." So much so, that I have been drawn to the term, Trump Derangement Syndrome Derangement Syndrome." The latter is a term that I did not invent but that I dearly wish that I had, and for which I wish that I could take credit.

In the present story, there was a faux pas, committed by a hostess on "Fox & Friends." That program's staff is not anti-Trump. They are fanatically devoted to supporting Trump. (A new meaning, for "Trump Derangement Syndrome," perhaps?)

And I think Althouse made it clear that the follow-up Tweet, calling attention to the use of the phrase "two dictators" was funny and it called attention to a funny occurrence on cable television. So "Fox & Friends" is not TDS. The Tweet wasn't TDS. What was it, that was TDS?

Inga...Allie Oop म्हणाले...

Is it Trump Derangement Syndrome to see it as funny? And yes, it’s funny.

Yancey Ward म्हणाले...

Chuck will now proceed to tell us how you can tell someone is a dictator by the fact that they can get political supporters to pay off bimbo eruptions under their own good names.

Birkel म्हणाले...

Chuck, fopdoodle extraordinaire, will now explain how it is not deranged to take an unusual, pathological, interest in a tween child of the president. And if you don't believe him he will twist an old lady by some appendage or another.

Clapter is not funny.

I am curious too why a Trump Derangement Syndrome tag was appointed to this post. Who was acting out of TDS, not the TV commentator, nor the tweeter, so who?

The obvious answer to anyone with more than two neurons behind his eyes: Althouse knows the dog whistle effect any text string containing "Trump" and "dictator" has on certain people.

Yancey Ward म्हणाले...

Inga,

It is quite plausible to even probable that it was a true Freudian slip- in other words, the commentator really does think Trump is a dictator and just failed to cover her belief. Just because she works for Fox News doesn't mean she is even a Republican.

What do dictators do first? Demonize the press, threaten speech that they don’t like. That’s not a good look for Trump, makes many people question his respect for the First Amendment right to free speech.

Inga: "What do dictators do first? Demonize the press, threaten speech that they don’t like."

Matt Sablan म्हणाले...

"How has he respected the right to free speech of the football and basketball players who protest police abuses to black Americans?"

-- He didn't jail them on some pretext, like Obama jailed the movie guy who caused the embassy attack, and he didn't try to pressure the press pool to ostracize his unfavorites. Trump has been vocal about which news is fakenews and which is news he likes, but he's yet to actually go as far as Obama did, such as by bugging or using legal pressure to silence journalists.

Matt Sablan म्हणाले...

"How is saying he would be in favor of jailing journalists allowing more free speech, how is saying he wants to strengthen libel and slander laws allowing for free speech, how is saying the press is the enemy of the people allowing more free speech?"

-- Do you have the exact quotes that we can discuss?

As for strengthening libel and slander -- that's something people have been thinking on and off about a lot. That's not a radical idea.

Quaestor म्हणाले...

The term dictator comes to us via the Roman republic. Specifically, the dictator was a consul who was granted supreme executive power by a supermajority vote in the Assembly for a maximum of six months as a means to address an existential threat to the state. The actual use of that office was very rare, the most obvious example being the dictatorship of Fabius Maximus Verrucosus (217 BC) who instituted the so-called Fabian policy against Hannibal.

The dictator as such does not appear in Aristotle's Politics, However, his description of the tyrannos and some examples of the basileus, i.e. potentates who govern by fiat without reference to the opinions or rights of others, fits our modern use of dictator much more closely than the Roman magistrate of that title.

The Constitution protects us from dictatorship through the principle of the separation of powers. Generally speaking, the legislative power resides in Congress rather than the Presidency, and though the President may temporarily establish policy by executive fiat, his acts have no permanent force in law without the consent of Congress.

Given recent history whose presidency comes closer to the actual definition of a dictator? Hint: it ain't Trump.

Earnest Prole म्हणाले...

A genuine dictator would have repealed Obamacare by decree, no?

Earnest Prole म्हणाले...

Trump's problem is that the role of American Hitler has already been played so convincingly by George W. Bush.

Drago म्हणाले...

According to the left, also GHW Bush, Ronald Reagan, Gerald Ford, Richard Nixon, Barry Goldwater, Richard Nixon (again!), Dwight Eisenhower (who was also stupid and should have lost to the Intellectual Giant Adlai Stevenson) and Dewey.

Truman actually called Dewey a communist AND a Nazi!!

A nice two-fer.

Is Inga really as stupid as her comments suggest (shout, actually), or is the insipidity a harebrained rhetorical device taught at the Close Cover Before Striking School of Psychiatric Nursing and Copier Repair? (Lecture II: Make Your Ignorance Work For You)

No sane definition of free speech insists that all speech must be held to be true or morally sound. You may point at the speaker and shout "Liar!", but your shout mayn't be so loud that the speaker cannot be heard. That's de-platforming, a practice characteristic of Inga's friends and associates.

The media buy ink by the ton and bandwidth by the petabyte per second. They are in no danger of losing their freedom of speech to Trump's whispered truth-telling.

"Hahahahaha,"

Just trying to help. No need to get snarky. Inga, when you first joined this board you stated your intention was to learn the opposing viewpoint. This thread on dictators/Trump is a good case in point that that was not the case, or you have since decided to close your mind to valid points that threaten your worldview. The comparison between Trump and Obama as regards a dictatorial leadership style is pretty stark wouldn't you agree?

What happened to cause you to close your mind so completely? (Please don't use 'That lyin' sonofabitch Johnson' line.) We get the fact you (and Chuck) dislike the persona of the current President. You shouldn't let it cloud your mind as to actual (and to my mind, logical) policy.

Chuck म्हणाले...

PacWest absolutely nothing that I've written here today had one damned thing to do with policy.

I watched the clip. I completely agree with Althouse. It was a slip, and it was a really funny slip. I was reacting to that. I was not guessing about anything else. I was talking about the slip, and how funny it was, and who made the slip, and who noted the slip with a posting of the video clip to Twitter.

Just like Althouse said.

And all that I wonder is what "Trump Derangement Syndrome" means anymore, if it applies to this blog post.

Quaestor म्हणाले...

Inga wrote: What do dictators do first? Demonize the press, threaten speech that they don’t like.

Incorrect. Dictators close the newspapers, smash the presses, and imprison speakers they don't like (Dinesh D'Souza, Mark Basseley Youssef, Tommy Robinson, et al.) and memory-hole their products.

And what's so bad about demonization (the go-to word of the left when its collective hand is caught in the cookie jar)? If Trump is demonizing the press he's only returning the favor.

Why Althouse tagged this post with TDS I don't know. Yes I watched it. Must be some other outlet's reaction to it. I was simply pointing out your inability to give credit where it is due. I believe this qualifies as TDS, although a milder form of it than Inga's. Process, process, process. The process was broken long before Trump. Romney lost. It is not a gentleman's game anymore.
