At the Best Day Ever Café...
... it could be today. In a sense, it's always today. Because what can you do with any other day?

The current day is always the best day.
Because its the only one that matters.
The future might not come, and the past is gone forever.
Today is going to be a great day. We began it in a hotel room in Edina, Minnesota; progressed to a gigantic and delicious brunch at an Original Pancake House, and are about to hit the road on a loop drive down the river, over to Wisconsin,up to Chippewa Falls, back over to Coon Rapids and south to our hotel again tonight. Looking forward to whatever adventures the day brings.
It is the best day ever to contemplate all the winning, cuz it will stop before long.
I will say it is odd to consider that most of these extremely nice Minnesotans that we are encountering here in the "Cities" (spent yesterday in Saint Paul with friends) would cheerfully throw me off a bridge if they knew I was a Trump voter.
I went to a Frank Turner concert last night. Best night ever. If you like his music, you should definitely see him live.
I saw Hereditary last night based on buzz without reading any reviews. Skip it.
But then I walked out of Incredibles 2 last week. Feeling sleepy. Must be getting old.
Pants, you'll be safe in Chippewa Falls.
She is a big, tall nice looking girl.
I did 90 minutes on the office treadmill last night while watching the first two Amazon episodes of their series called Brittania. This show shows promise..will watch episode 3 & 4 tonight.
"We began it in a hotel room in Edina, Minnesota; "
Just stay away from the schools and you'll be fine.
Even the Strib is concerned.
I was just perusing Drudge and saw the headline "Joe Jackson dead". At first I thought it was the English singer/musician- turned out it was Michael Jackson's father.
Odd that they built such an elaborate facade and then hid it behind a big marquee.
In a Day (2006) is good.
But then I walked out of Incredibles 2 last week. Feeling sleepy. Must be getting old.
I get the feeling that all of the buzz hereabouts about I2 has to do with positive portrayals of conservative values. Meh, yawn...
AP says Kennedy just anounced his retirement.
Kennedy to retire.
I'm almost...almost tired of all this winning.
Also it sounds like the GOPe immigration bill died.
Wait until next Congress.
Kennedy announced his retirement.
They better hurry and get another SCOTUS before Nov.
If Republicans lose the Senate, Trump will never get another gorsuch.
Second look at David Souter? /s

I was at a yacht club winter ski thing and we rented the Jackson's house at Lake Arrowhead. I am convinced my middle daughter was conceived there.
Weird family. His, not mine.
Reps still pick up senate seats in November, but this will motivate the left voting base more than their fake scandals.
It feels like some big turning point has happened politically. The Democrats/media push on children at the border backfired. Trump seized the momentum on the issue. Liberals are embracing aggressive behavior, which is turning moderates off. The #Walkaway campaign is gaining publicity and momentum. And now Trump and the Republicans have a string of Supreme Court victories. Meanwhile, the Dems are in turmoil, with Pelosi's successor being defeated. This is a thrilling time to be alive.

Kennedy is done! Wow, replace the Squish with a solid conservative? Roberts becomes the "Swing vote?" How much winning! Inga on suicide watch ! Heck, even Chuck will be happy with this news, I presume, since that's the reason he gave for voting for Trump was to get Gorsuch!
Any ideas on who will Trump nominate to replace Kennedy?

Trump and the GOP could use this fear to drive more Republican voters to the polls too. See all the good results we're getting? You want to keep that going, don't you?
Trump voters might feel like its the best day ever.
News reports swirling that Kennedy is retiring.
Can they confirm a nominee by September? After all, the Dems told us that delaying a nominee was outrageous ...
"Trump and the GOP could use this fear to drive more Republican voters to the polls too."
Pretty risky.
Joe Jackson dead at 89
This was important news on Twitter.
Who the hell is joe jackson?
Father of M. Jackson. Dead Pop Singer.
Guess not everyone cares about Justice Kennedy.
"They better hurry and get another SCOTUS before Nov."
Actually, they have until Jan, right?
you peeps forgetting McCain and Flake.
These assholes have at 1 back-stab left in them.
Good chance Trump will pick a woman and/or a minority.
Kennedy is retiring after all!
Bob Boyd: "Any ideas on who will Trump nominate to replace Kennedy?"
The mere fact that you wrote "who will Trump nominate" is sure to set off LLR Chuck, who apparently is under the impression that the entire federal government is moving briskly along with nary a thought about Trump or Trump policies.
I do know these few things:
1) It will not be a Souter type (that the Bush's and Sununu gave us)
2) More conservative #Winning!
3) The Never Trumpers and "True Conservatives" will call for the defeat of the Republican President
rcocean: "you peeps forgetting McCain and Flake.
These assholes have at 1 back-stab left in them"
Yep.
And LLR Chuck will blame Trump.
Doubtful Senate could get to Kennedy replacement before 2020.
McConnell needs his nap time. 3 day work weeks - 30 weeks a year, tire him out.
Well, Drago: Ol' Chuck has been pretty consistent in saying he voted for Trump to get Gorsuch. He hates everything else about Trump, but wanted Gorsuch on the Court.
Also, on gay marriage Chuck has pretty consistently opposed that. Kennedy wrote all the gay marriage decisions (will he come out of the closet now?)
So Chuck may well be happy to replace Kennedy with a real conservative.
And I'll defend Mitch McConnell, who actually pulled of the Scalia strategy and held firm. Who knew he had it in him? McConnell turned over and woke up on the right side of the bed on Gorsuch. With that as precedent, I hope he actually rams through a true conservative pick.
Are we allowed to opine on how George Will feels about Kennedy retiring? I mean, by all rights, that should have been a Hillary pick!
"It will not be a Souter type (that the Bush's and Sununu gave us)"
We need another Alioto or Roberts. Hopefully, Trump will go off the Federalist list.
I'd rather the seat remain empty than another fucking drama queen like Kennedy, always flipping from side to side, trying to be the center of attention.
The Republicans may lose the House, though that is becoming more questionable. No serious analysis I have read thinks they will lose the Senate, and most predict they will pick up seats there.
No matter who he nominates, almost no D will vote for them, though.
Hey Chuck!
Your friends want to play.
Please give them your phone number!
Vance: "Well, Drago: Ol' Chuck has been pretty consistent in saying he voted for Trump to get Gorsuch"
Yes, Chuck certainly makes many claims............
Vance: "And I'll defend Mitch McConnell, who actually pulled of the Scalia strategy and held firm. Who knew he had it in him? "
True.
McConnell hung tough and it was, in the end, a masterful move.
Full marks.
With Kennedy's key votes on gay marriage, abortion and (mumble), the court may ... go back to the constitution.
affirmative action
it is a great day!
With Kennedy's retirement announcement, now would be a good time to increase substantially the secret service protection of conservative supreme court justices.
For obvious reasons.
If Hillary had won the Court would have been 6-3 AND Ginsburg and Breyer would have been replaced with 40 year olds.
The country dodged a nuclear weapon.
Althouse, or Meade, you've got a typo in yesterday's post about Elaine Chao which you may want to correct for the record. Or not.
Your quote has her speaking in pidgin English - “Why you don’t leave my husband alone? Why you don’t leave my husband alone?” - when she actually said - “Why don’t you leave my husband alone? Why don’t you leave my husband alone?.”
I left a gentle prompt which I thought would get your attention but it didn't.
Why 40? A 21 year old could figure out how liberal "justices" vote on every issue.
OM: "The country dodged a nuclear weapon."
But, but, George Will thought it was necessary to reclaim our good honor!......
I'm hoping Trump will pick Dianne Sykes, a solid conservative.
Best part: Her ex is Never Trumper radio host and LLR Charlie Sykes.
AT: "Why 40? A 21 year old could figure out how liberal "justices" vote on every issue."
21 year old hell.
A redesigned lefty Magic 8-Ball would suffice.
Tomorrow may never come. From a human perspective, evolution (i.e. chaos) is a fickle, selective process.
”Why 40? A 21 year old could figure out how liberal "justices" vote on every issue.”

Re: Kennedy retiring-
I hope Trump nominates another moderate, like Gorsuch ( or Thomas ) to replace him.
Older folks--no offense, the curmudgeons here are the best and I learn so much from them--like neat lawns, I get it. Well, I'd get it if I had a lawn. After the kids go to sleep, I like to sit on my stoop when the humidity isn't too bad. I might smoke the odd cigarette--I'll wait for legalization before I light up in front of my house, neighborhood is crawling with cops because of the nearby housing project. These days I think about a few things, but one of my favorite things to think and chuckle about is how it seems like world has been taken over by loudmouth New Yorkers. I get to see Rudy, my favorite mayor and star of a hilarious weekly radio show when he held office, on CNN saying ridiculous things. Now he's not just riling up cat (and ferret) ladies all over the five boroughs, but he's doing it all over the country. And then there's his client. Is that guy outrageous. Everyone around town used to love his goofy antics, even if his taste was pure Queens and he made most bridge and tunnel folks look couth by comparison. They're not bad guys, they just jaw a lot. But they'd be there to help you out in a pinch, like even the a Wall Street Master of the Universe late to a meeting will help lost tourists with directions if they ask for it. Lower Manhattan is confusing. Guys, it's a NY City thing. You'll get used to it. Peter Fonda and, sad to say, Bobby D are has-beens. Maxine Waters? Please. She just fringed herself. Pay some attention to what the young folks are up to. If Kanye West or Taylor Swift catch TDS, I may start worrying. Otherwise, enjoy the ride. New Yorkers are rough on the outside, we don't have the best manners, but if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere. Just give it time.
Call this town and its denizens an acquired taste.
you peeps forgetting McCain and Flake
Zactly
McConnell is already on the floor addressing the nomination procedure.
Winning!
Trump nominates Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, throwing the left into confusion.
I can't tell if daskol's post is procedurally generated or real. It almost makes sense, but not quite.
Little piece of "Orpheum" trivia for Althouse: The historic Orpheum Theater on Hennepin Avenue in Minneapolis was owned by a Mr. Robert Zimmerman (of whom I believe you have a passing interest) during the 1980's. I believe it was managed by his brother.
Of course, like many of the old historic (read: functionally obsolete) downtown theaters, it's now owned by an "historic trust", so us geezers can go see the traveling production of "Angels in America" and such.
Does one become tired of the winning? Ask Patriot fans.

If the Republicans lose the Senate, Trump might never get another judge, period. Remember, it is now "majority rules." Simple majority.
Mitch McConnell, in opposing the Harry Reid/Dick Durbin/Chuck Schumer/Barack Obama/Eric Holder rule change, said that someday the Dems might find themselves in a minority and would then not like what they did. McConnell is probably still laughing about how right he was. I'm sorry to say that it works both ways.
This will be a helluva race; to get somebody confirmed before November. I think it will happen. They can get 50 votes plus Pence.
People might wonder what if McCain dies or cannot vote before November? I think that the AZ governor appoints somebody, and the appointee (or other replacement) would have to face an election in the next general election. So there should be a 51st Republican vote through November.
If the Republicans lose the Senate, Trump might never get another judge, period. Remember, it is now "majority rules." Simple majority.
I don't think there is a chance of losing the Senate but I doubt there can be a confirmation before the election and probably before the new Senate is sworn in. McCain and Flake will be knee jerk opposition.
If McCain dies, I just hope Ducey does not appoint Cindy.
The hearings will be wild and I fully expect riots. The left will see this, rightly I think, as an existential threat.
I see a riotous fall campaign, more now than before.
I just hope someone does not get killed.
Feast on the bitter tears of paranoid leftists. The meltdown right on Q
Yeah, this day has struck the left like a thunderclap. I don't think it's fully sunk in yet for them, but we could be in for a very bumpy ride in the coming days...
My recycled opinion from the PJMedia Live Blog:
Probably not a popular opinion, but...for pretty much all my adult life, the supreme court has been divided 4 liberals, 4 conservatives, 1 middle of the road squish. Pretty much evenly divided, pretty much just like America, and just the way Americans want it.
My best reason for sandbagging Garland in favor of Gorsuch is that Garland would have upset this balance, while Gorsuch maintains it. It was right to replace the conservative Scalia with another conservative.
The balance should be maintained--Trump should appoint some careful, respected, but middle of the road squish who no one is excited about but everyone can accept.
”People might wonder what if McCain dies or cannot vote before November? I think that the AZ governor appoints somebody, and the appointee (or other replacement) would have to face an election in the next general election. So there should be a 51st Republican vote through November.”
There was a deadline for a McCain retirement that came and went a month or so ago. With the deadline passed, I thought an appointed Senator serves out McCain’s term.
I could be wrong.
So far, the Kennedy retirement meltdown on Twitter has several themes.
1) They can't confirm a SCOTUS this year, it's an election year!!!
2) A president under threat of impeachment can't nominate for SCOTUS!!!
3) A president under FBI investigation can't nominate for SCOTUS!!!!
I love Twitter.

I misspoke. Should be January. Doesn't matter what happens in Nov under new senators are seated. So they can create a sense of urgency among Republicans to vote for senators in Nov by delaying the vote.
Yes!!! Best day ever!!!
What Ducey should do is appoint one of the two women running for the Flake and McCain seats.
Obviously Sheriff Joe is a nonstarter.
Kelli Ward did pretty well against McCain in spite of his lies about the wall and Obamacare.
Martha McSally is an excellent Congresswoman. Flip a coin. Appoint one and let the other win the election.
"The balance should be maintained--Trump should appoint some careful, respected, but middle of the road squish who no one is excited about but everyone can accept."
Can't agree with that. What we need are nine justices who can read the Constitution and feel obliged to rule on what it actually says, not what they would like for it to say.
Great day. Because of the SCOTUS stuff, and I started a new job working in the defense industry.
Joe Manchin, a hack’s hack if there ever was one, a man who really loves that sweet senate job and would pretty much blow Kanye right now for re-election will vote for whoever Trump nominates. Claire MCCaskell will change her vocation from hack politician to somebody who sits on boards and shows up places for pay days and vote no.
Eric said "I love Twitter". You are an honest person- almost everyone seems to claim they hate it yet it is the place to go.
I'm convinced Kennedy, Trump, and McConnell all settled on a replacement long before today's announcement.
Congratulations RoughCoat!
My favorite so far has been a leftist demanding that Merrick Garland must be appointed or the entire GOP resign. Really?
A moment's thought about "Would Garland have voted with the majority on any of these decisions?" demonstrates that "moderate" Garland would have been just another Ginsburg clone.
Looking forward to Claire McCatkill's losing.
By the way, the title of this Post: "Best day ever!" is great. Althouse was prophetic!
Germany out of the cup, unions can't force people to pay and Kennedy retires????
Best day ever!!!
this tweet cracks me up
UPDATE: Anthony Kennedy to be replaced by a futuristic device that simply makes your nightmares real,. Asked about the legal wisdom of such an appointment, the president reportedly said, "Enjoy, motherfuckers!"
The only way today gets better is if Trump announces that Cruz will be the nominee.
Browndog: "I'm convinced Kennedy, Trump, and McConnell all settled on a replacement long before today's announcement"
Almost certainly.
Interesting question:
Once announced, can a SC Justice "un-announce" a retirement?
At what point is it "done done" and past the point of return?

You are mostly right.
I think that if McCain died tomorrow, a replacement appointee would only serve through the he end of the year with a special election conducted alongside the general in November. But if McCain died in the fall, the appointee would serve until 2020. (Does AZ hold statewide elections in 2019?)
McCain was re-elected in 2016, if I recall correctly. His term would run to 2022, and that would be another required election for a McCain replacement.
Cruz says pick Mike Lee.

Senators might be willing to confirm so that they don't have to deal with him anymore....plus he would certainly know how to deal with the confirmation process.
History repeats itself as Germany loses in Russia.

Sure, because we want to be fair. And the Dems would do the same I'm almost positive about that. And why would we want another constitutionalist on the SC anyway?

Looks like Trump got played.
Kennedy will be most likely replaced by a more conservative, less centrist judge. Elections have consequences, after all!
But that will only cause a nudge further to the right, not cause a tectonic shift in the court. That WOULD occur should Trump get the opportunity to replace Ginsburg or Breyer, of course.
I liked what Cruz just said. Paraphrasing, he doesn’t want a conservative, he wants someone who respects the Constitution. Conservative vs liberal belongs in the other two branches of government.

She won't be old enough yet.
I don't believe we've had a 'rightwing' Supreme Court justice in my lifetime, and I'm an old man. For many years we have had 4 1/2 constitutionalists, and 4 1/2 lefties who feel entitled to ignore constitution and precedent and stick their thumbs on the scales every chance they get for women over men, non-white over white, gay over straight, labor over management, poor over rich, foreign over native, and illegal over legal immigrant. (Have I forgotten anything?) I believe there were Supreme Court justices in the past that had, and applied, the opposite set of prejudices, but that was mostly in the 19th century, and they are all long dead.
Calling the 4 1/2 constitutinalists 'conservative' is a way of making them look like right-wingers by verbal sleight of hand. They have a 'conservative', i.e. clearly delimited and controlled by tradition, view of their own powers, but that is not at all the same thing as being right-wing white-male-straight-nativeborn-supremacists trying to help the plutocrats in top hats and spats crush the proletariat.
It's rather like calling me a 'white nationalist'. I can't deny it: I'm white, and a nationalist. But I'm sure as Hell not a white-nation-alist, as I do not in any way support an all-white nation or a white-supremacist nation or anything of the sort. 'White nationalist' is a sneaky way of implying that the 100,000,000+ Americans who are white and nationalists are also racist Nazi Klansmen, when those are unlikely to be more than 100,000, if that, all together.
To return to the Supreme Court, we have 4 1/2 good umpires who diligently call balls and strikes as best they can without any concern for who will win the game, and 4 1/2 bad umpires who think it's OK to call a ball a strike or a strike a ball if it will help the weary veteran break a record, or the poor struggling rookie not get sent down to the minors so he can feed his family. The latter are (arguably) 'nicer' but they're also wrong.
wait, did something awesome happen on June 23rd?
@inga - you are so wrong. No Republican black is really black, no Republican woman is a real woman, and no Republican gay is really gay as far as the Left isconcerned. They are all traitors to their kind.

Chuck's leftist allies will be rioting starting on August 28th when Chuck's favorite Republican Robert Mueller is humiliated in court because he indicted a company that didn't exist and he refuses to perform discovery and drops all charges against the nefarious Russians.

The "as articulated by Kennedy" part is the rub, though. How can one uphold lofty-sounding balderdash?
Precedent is precedent, sure. But before one can pledge allegiance to a particular line of reasoning the reasoning itself has to exist!

What's that smell? Napalm in the morning?
Good news for the blog today that Trump beat Hillary, because if Hillary was President she could have appointed Inga as a SC Justice, thus losing her interesting comments here.

The baseball umpire analogy is one of the thinnest, worst analogies for how Supreme Court judges work, and it is one that no self-respecting originalist and textualist buys. Read Scalia.
Roberts had already become the swing justice this term, so I don't see Kennedy retirement mattering as much as it seemed it would before the term began. The big potential vacancies remain the Ginsburg or Breyer seats. (And with Thomas turning 70 last weekend he can't be counted out as a departure.)
@Achilles - 'Mueller refuses to perform discovery and drops all charges against the nefarious Russians.'
What if they want to counter-sue for civil damages and insist discovery?
When is the last time the Democrats appointed a “swing justice”?

Then you'll join me in welcoming Justice Cruz!
Had Hillary won, the SCOTUS would have become a rubber stamp for government power. But, like all control freaks, they would have believed that it was for our own good to let them control our lives.
Who was the Democrat appointed ‘Justice’ who was ever “persuadable”?
Kagan — we discussed the Left’s hilarious overreaction to her persuadability just last week.
What was it that Rush used to say in his most liberal moments? “Having more fun than any human being should be allowed to have!”
Oso Negro, I admire laslo's various alter egos--both those that I know are him, and most likely also those which I don't know are him. They are insightful and amusing. The latest female one, the sexy Jewish lady, is great. But I am not one of them. Promise.

Doesn't Cruz have an important election to win this fall? Who wins that race if Cruz bails out?
Lets give a quick shout-out to the two liberal justices who understood the hostility shown by the State in the Colorado gay cake case.
Who wants gay cake? I do!
Craig (2:57pm):
"Read Scalia"? What, every word he ever wrote? If you're going to insult my analogy, you need to back up your assessment with an argument, either posting your own, or quoting or linking to one written by someone else (Scalia or whomever). Otherwise, you like a damned fool. Your choice.
When the left are honest, I take that a sign of real progress.

Sorry, "look like", not "like".
I was just having fun, Chuck. You liked two names from Trump's list before he nominated Gorsuch. A man and a woman? Do you remember either? Thx
OK, I have to hand it to them. All of the liberal justices agreed with the conservatives that 2A was an individual right. That was sort of shocking to me, so a re-assessment of my attitude towards liberal justices is required.
Chuck -- was the woman Sykes? I hate remembering after I hit post! LOL
Janus and Kennedy retirement in one week?
It might be a signal from God that I need to buy a few Lotto tickets or fly to Vegas this weekend. Ride this win streak out, Baby!
When it comes to unions - government unions - leftists are like quicksand stuck in glue, welded shut.

My recollection is that I made no predictions (what a good thing that turned out to be), but I think I was asked about Joan Larsen who had recently been appointed to the Michigan Supreme Court, after which she won the next general election following that appointment.
Then President Trump nominated her to the Sixth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, and after a delaying game by Dem functionaries Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters, she was recently confirmed.
Larsen has been on the famous Trump List from the beginning.
I am personally aware of Leonard Leo calling people I know in the state to ask about her, but that would have happened in connection with the Sixth, or any other federal appellate judgeship.
I do not think that Joan Larsen will get this pick.
And perhaps the other person we talked about was Bill Pryor. If there were anybody more radioactive than Brett Kavanagh, it would be Pryor. ;-) And when I say "radioactive," I mean it as high praise.
If I had to guess, I'd say Kavanagh, and I'd be every bit as thrilled with that pick as with Gorsuch.

@Achilles - 'Mueller refuses to perform discovery and drops all charges against the nefarious Russians.'
What if they want to counter-sue for civil damages and insist discovery?
I assume they will.
It will be glorious.
Two enemies of freedom chewing on each other.
A federal grand jury charged the White Supremacist who ran down the protestor, Heather Heyer in the street, causing her death last year with hate crimes. Good on you AG Sessions.
“In announcing the indictment, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said his department has determined that "hateful ideologies will not have the last word and their adherents will not get away with violent crimes against those they target."
Sessions said the indictment "should send a clear message to every would-be criminal in America that we aggressively prosecute violent crimes of hate that threaten the core principles of our nation."

If the Republicans lose the Senate, Trump might never get another judge, period. Remember, it is now "majority rules." Simple majority.
Chuck wishes.
Over under is 56 Republicans in the senate after November.
Chuck's leftist allies will be rioting starting on August 28th when Chuck's favorite Republican Robert Mueller is humiliated in court because he indicted a company that didn't exist and he refuses to perform discovery and drops all charges against the nefarious Russians.
It will be closer to 60 republican senators.
I wish this were right. But, I'll be shocked if Republicans end up with 50+ Senate seats.
Kavanaugh (53) and Pryor (55) would both be excellent. I'd even look for some younger Fed Society guy or gal. Paul Clement is 52, a smidgen younger, he'd be great. But maybe even younger still.
Sessions said the indictment "should send a clear message to every would-be criminal in America that we aggressively prosecute violent crimes of hate that threaten the core principles of our nation."
Surely we want to send the message that we aggressively prosecute violent crimes, whatever their motives.
The idea of a "hate crime" is so odd. It doesn't cover crimes motivated by hating individuals. "I poisoned him because I hate him!" Not a hate crime. "I knifed her to steal her purse!" Not a hate crime. "I shot him because I love violence!" Not a hate crime. "I strangled her because I worship Death." Not a hate crime. "I planned every detail of his murder for months, savoring the thought of it in my mind before I tortured him to death!" Not a hate crime. "I hit her with a car because I'm a white supremacist!" Hate crime! Worse than all the others!
@inga - will you feel the same way when they charge Antifa activists with hate crimes?
This person is not having the best day ever.

God dam* this f**king piece of s**t country. And the piece of s**t racists controlling ALL THREE branches of government. #SCOTUS
Lulz
And what does NPR lead with to announce his retirement? You guessed it: Citizens United!
Decided by a "narrow" 5-4 majority, Nina said -- twice!
None of the other cases where he was #5, let's see, Obergefell?, were "narrow" 5-4 majorities.
She signs off: "end of the world as we know it."
And there you have it, National Palestinian Radio on the events of the day. "Unbiased," said the promo!
Jeff Toobin, CNN Legal Beagle is having a bad day, too. To his credit, though, he is not whinging or shrieking (at least in public). He is talking about the facts:
"JEFFREY TOOBIN, CNN: I think sometimes we talk about the Supreme Court too much in abstractions, about dignity and who is qualified and who is not. Let's talk facts. Let's talk about what America is going to be like that's different. You are going to see 20 states pass laws banning abortion outright. Just banning abortion. Because they know that there are now going to be five votes on the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade. And abortion will be illegal in a significant part of the United States in 18 months."
”But, I'll be shocked if Republicans end up with 50+ Senate seats.”
The republicans certainly have the numbers on their side, but the leftists have the hate (er, passion). That could be conteracted if the seat is still open in November. Risky strategy with potentially big pay off.
Gosnell film set for fall release.
"The idea of a 'hate crime' is so odd."
It's bullshit and its unconstitutional. It's thought crime.
If I punch you in the face and break your nose because I'm robbing you or because you called me name or for some other random reason, I'll be charged with battery (or whatever the crime may be termed in a particular locality), and will receive the appropriate sentence for that crime. If I do exactly the same thing and inflict upon you the exact same injury, but I shout an epithet at you (referencing your status as a member of a "protected class"), the charge will be "enhanced" and the sentence will be significantly greater. What's the difference? Only the expressed "thought" behind the crime.
Republicans have 9 total current seats up for election. 6 are strong retains, 3 are up for grabs, but only because 2 are for open seats (Arizona and Utah). At most, they lose 1 of those.
Dems have 24 seats up for election. 7 are considered up for grabs and 3 slightly leaning D. CNN itself lists 7 of those 10 as likely to switch. So, Republicans are almost certain to have a larger Senate majority after the 2018 mid-terms.
2020 looks very different, though, but that is still 2 1/2 years away.

It surprised me today that Sessions is in favor of hate crimes, considering that when he was in the Senate he argued against them, but I ran into this article and it looks like these folks were prescient regarding Sessions and hate crimes. The article below is from March.
That’s why a slew of hate crime prosecutions and convictions caught our eye the last few weeks.
There already were signals that Sessions had ordered his staff to keep bringing such cases. In May, a Justice Department official told a Senate hearing that hate crimes remain a priority for prosecutors. The same month, the department secured its first conviction on federal hate crime charges for an attack based on gender identity.
Jeffrey Toobin: ”Let's talk facts. Let's talk about what America is going to be like that's different. You are going to see 20 states pass laws banning abortion outright. Just banning abortion. Of course, nobody will call him on it when it doesn’t happen.
a Russian? Volokh etal
He's an American citizen, isn't he? The concept of half-breeds, Jew privilege, color judgments, etc., is a principle of the diversity doctrine adopted by left-wing ideologies and regimes.
So, Antifa can setup kill zones, deny civil rights, and sacrifice its members at will. Progress at the twilight fringe.

I know the feeling.
Oh, I was gonna mention that the woman, like most of the crowd, was white too, so it must've been a non-conforming anti-gender anti-mental sexual disorientation crime.
Robert Cook at 3:44 is exactly right.
”It's bullshit and its unconstitutional. It's thought crime.”
Which is right up the Left’s alley.
Inga: "It surprised me today that Sessions is in favor of hate crimes,...."
Sessions is not in favor of hate crimes.
But currently hate crimes are the law of the land and Sessions is required to enforce those laws.
Absolutely no contradiction between being a Senator opposed to certain policies and being in an enforcement role which requires prosecuting based on current law.
One would have to be astonishingly dense not to get that....oh, right.
I hope Donald is as rested and ready for this as he is tanned. A great day. Bring it on.
Etienne - One of the best ever people to have ever walked the planet. A true and utter sex God, a genius, handsome, and also the nicest person in the world. Like if Jesus was put in a blender, lego, condoms and love were added, you freeze the result into an Etienne mold. And thats how you get a quarter of the glory of Etienne.
Girl 1- I had sex with a true Etienne last night
Girl 2- Lucky bitch...
Good comment on another blog" About the new Congresswoman nominee in NYC.
Looking at her I think of the gag on the IMAO blog. An attractive woman, at a romantic dinner with a guy, says: “I’m a socialist.” The guy says, “Yeah, I don’t know much about economics either.”
Makes me think of Inga but she's not young and attractive,
“...will you feel the same way when they charge Antifa activists with hate crimes?”
Yes. I’m guessing Hodgkinson will be charged with a hate crime too.
Dr. Weevil: Which one is the "1/2"?
Ann - A name meaning Grace in Hebrew, the name of the blessed Mother of Mary who gave birth to Jesus, a common name amongst royalty and the sickest bitch who owns all the boys on the block. Often the bearer of the name copes with the burden of extensive beauty and valor, and gracefully imbibes the pleasures of money, sex, music and drugs.
Oh I wish my name was Ann instead of Killian, so I could enjoy the manifest destiny of the name and all the spectacular wonder attached to it.
