Tony Finau — at the Masters — "suffered a high-ankle sprain, yesterday, while celebrating a hole-in-one in the par-3 tournament."

"But that hasn’t slowed down Tony Finau in his first Masters appearance. He’s been walking gingerly but is somehow now tied for the lead at four-under through 12" (NYT).

That hurts to watch.

Daydreaming and watching golf on television. I see a theme here.

If he has to walk it, there is no way he finishes 72 holes. He is in need of some of Trumps "thoughts and prayers."

Meanwhile back at the ranch, Cool Hand Spieth is cruising along and making golf look easy.

I'm near Augusta for a couple of days, and seeing the Masters has been something on my to do list. I think I'll see what the tickets are scalping for for the weekend. I was sorely disappointed in the Pheonix Open, my first time at a Pro tourney. Much better on TV.

Trumpit म्हणाले...

As Trump would say, "Fake news!" Clever of him to fake an ankle injury to distract from his caddy putting the ball in the hole.

mockturtle म्हणाले...

I was watching that. Today he finished round one at four under and was discussing the fact that his MRI was negative and he was able to play.

Yep, he's on a roll. But his caddy is the hottest [looking] guy on the tour. :-)

There was a time when golfers considered such displays gauche and ungentlemanly. Perhaps they were as wise as they were haughty.

Golf galleries were also better behaved by far, and far better dressed, as well. The last time I attended a pro tour event I was pissed off royally by the obscene drunkenness of some of the attendees. My date and I had top-tier tickets that gave us basically unlimited bar service, but I had only one beer and GF had two or maybe three 6 oz. wines -- not nearly enough to get even a bit rowdy. But there were many throwing back liquor cocktail as fast as they get service. Some were past being ambulatory. Disgusting.

1.8K for Sunday grounds tickets. Gonna pass on that one.

Well, quaestor, golf used to be a gentleman's [and gentlewoman's] sport. It's a lot more democratic now but far less genteel.

No worries Q. It is perhaps a few decades off before they start sanctioning coordinated group endzone routines. I guess in golf's case, it would be called "round the hole" routines. (Trademark pending)

Tiger won the 2008 US Open in a playoff. He played all four rounds on a shredded knee. A high ankle sprain is nothing.

All “five” rounds

My husband, son, and I had a blast at the Waste Management Open. There was a lot of intoxication but it was very friendly. Almost euphoric. I didn’t see any angry belligerent drunks. They reminded me of frolicking puppies. It helped that police presence outside and an army of Uber drivers were there to keep everyone safe on the way home. They had hundreds of people queued up in three different Uber lines. Most organized event I’ve ever attended.

The US Opens we’ve gone to have been fun, but not so joyous.

The real cool story from the Par 3 Tourney was Jack Nicklaus' grandson Gary, who was caddying for him, getting his first hole in one after getting a chance to tee off on the last hole. Jack, who has one five Green Jackets said it was his most memorable Masters moment. A true "family man", I believe it. What an unbelievable moment!

Curious George म्हणाले...

I forgot to add that Jack asked him if he wanted to give it a shot, and predicted he would get an ace. Jack Nicklaus has led a great life, and deserves it.

I like to watch golf and read a book. Aside from college football, about the only TV I watch.

Jaq म्हणाले...

I can’t believe thought that they have to show off that political hack, baldilocks, doing interviews while the action was still going on because it was soooo important that they guy who probably hates 75% of golf fans just for being white and male to be seen on cameral.

Jaq म्हणाले...

I did call my wife into the room and teed up the replay to show her though. It’s not often that something in golf happens that is interesting to her.

robother म्हणाले...

Ah, to be young again. I did that in a pick-up basketball game when I was 30. Popped it back in again. But I didn't play 4 days of golf after getting off the court.

Yeah, I am thinking he is going to be walking something like 40 miles, 10 miles a day. (That’s a guess, but my fitbit says that my short course is 7 miles to walk.)

One of the best sporting events I ever attended was the US Senior Open in Omaha. No cell phones. No drunkness. A nice walk on a hot summer day.

I don't quite understand. how is this gay related?

MountainMan म्हणाले...

I was there on Monday for the first practice round. Fifth time overall I have been. In earlier years I have been three times to the Tuesday practice and once for the tournament on Thursday. Best day overall is the Tuesday practice, you can take cameras and get autographs at the practice range, much more fun than going to the actual tournament. I got 6.6 miles of walking in, and very bit of it was enjoyable. It is, by far, the best sporting event - no, any organized event - I have ever attended. Every time I go, it gets better, they are constantly making improvements to the course and the facilities. The course is incredibly beautiful and immaculate; parking is free; and the food is fairly decent and very inexpensive. Rest rooms are unbelievably clean and stay that way. Golf shop has nice merchandise but you pay for it, gladly. Augusta National is the only organization I know that can out-Disney Disney. Everyone is friendly. As a "patron" you are made to feel they really want you there and want you to have a good time and a great experience. I'd go every year if I could get tickets.

mockturtle म्हणाले...

It isn't, Jon. This is the golf thread.

rcocean म्हणाले...

I've been to several US opens and other PGA events.

Seen peeps with Drinks but no drunks.

Everyone well behaved, except the morons who kept shouting "get in the hole" after every putt.

rcocean म्हणाले...

From now on, we've decided to just watch one round of US Open in person - to get a feel for the course - and watch the rest on TV.

If you want to follow one of the better golfers its almost impossible to get a good look of their entire rounds. You can't see the fairway shots AND the putting. Too many people.

Jon Ericson म्हणाले...

Isn't there some way we can bring up gayness here.
It's the theme of the blog 'yknow.

Possibly. Like, how many gay golfers can dance on the head of a seven iron?

mockturtle म्हणाले...

There are more than a few gay women on the LPGA tour. Don't know of any gay pro male golfers, though.

mockturtle म्हणाले...

I'm trying, Jon.

Ralph L म्हणाले...

Is it wrong of me to hope this happens to some of the football dancers?

Ralph L म्हणाले...

How do they play with their pants so low on their hips?

Looked like it might have been a prior injury.

He didn't seem surprised and knew what to do.

"I think I'll see what the tickets are scalping for for the weekend."

The cheapest tickets are available for cash outside the grounds. Should be easier and cheaper on Saturday than Sunday. But bring plenty of cash.

I've been fortunate to go to many Masters. About 30 different years, some years all four days ! I've been to other tournaments, too, including some big ones. None come even close to the experience at Augusta.

mockturtle म्हणाले...

Beautiful venue but the weather can be iffy at Augusta. Looks like the weekend could be a washout. :-(

Six.

Even though there is no regular, PGA stop here in the PNW, we have been to the PGA Championship at Sahalee, a WGC event at Sahalee and the Senior US Open at Sahalee.

But the US Amateur (2010) and especially the US Open (2015) at Chambers Bay were tops. Twenty five minutes from my front door. The best golfers in the world.

Augusta? Some day. I hope.

But I'll take a Ryder Cup over that.
