"I just want to lead with love. I want to be about love.... I love Donald Trump."

Said Kanye West.

IN THE COMMENTS: Kevin said:
Love Trumps Hate
Remember?

What did it mean? Scott Adams wrote in "Win Bigly":
One of the more notable persuasion failures from the Clinton campaign involved the slogan Love Trumps Hate. The first two thirds of the slogan is literally “Love Trump.” Again, human brains put more weight on the first part of a sentence than the end. On a rational level, the sentence makes perfect sense, and it says what Trump’s critics wanted it to say. But in the 3-D world of persuasion, this slogan simply told the world to either love Trump or love the things he hates, such as terrorism and bad trade deals.
Just one more thing Scott Adams got right.

AND: Here's something Ted Rall got wrong:

Turned out we didn't get that 4 to 8 years of stupid — not that particular form of stupid, anyway (the stupid of getting called "sexist" every time you criticized the President).

LLR Chuck's beloved New York Times is forced to make an obvious correction about Inga's beloved islamists:

An article on Sunday about Campbell Brown’s role as Facebook’s head of news partnerships erroneously included a reference to Palestinian actions as an example of the sort of far-right conspiracy stories that have plagued Facebook. In fact, Palestinian officials have acknowledged providing payments to the families of Palestinians killed while carrying out attacks on Israelis or convicted of terrorist acts and imprisoned in Israel; that is not a conspiracy theory.

Mislabeling inconvenient information about islamists as a "far-right conspiracy" story is exactly the kind of thing Vichy Chuck would pull...with Inga cheering him on.

If I may put on my "serious" hat for a nanosecond, this is exactly what I'd like to see. The 95-5% black vote for Dems is artificially contrived. Blacks would be much better off, gaining leverage in the GOP by voting, say, 25% GOP, 75% Dem.

The Dems use the black vote to support their bullshit leftwing agenda, that many blacks don't support.

I had forgotten all about this.

TMZ report alleged it was West’s personal physician who had called the police and placed the musician on a 5150 psychiatric hold, claiming his patient “suffers from temporary psychosis due to sleep deprivation and dehydration.”

After a week under medical observation, West was released from the hospital, and on Dec. 13, he further shocked his supporters by paying a visit to Trump Tower to meet with the president-elect.

Obvious example of mental illness. Just ask Inga.

LLR Chuck's beloved New York Times...

When did I ever -- even once -- suggest that I loved the New York Times?

I don't care about the New York Times. And as I wrote almost a year ago, George W. Bush, Dick Cheney and Don Rumsfeld didn't much care about the Times. Bush called one of their reporters a major league asshole, right? Caught on a hot mic. Standing next to Cheney, who agreed.

Althouse, and Trump, seem to be fixated on "the Failing New York Times." The Times, which is more successful than ever (ditto the Washington Post) in the era of Trump. It seems that the more that Trump calls out the paper as "the failing New York Times," the more he is effectively making a liar out of himself.

My link:

You worthless lying bastard, Drago. I've never expressed any love for the New York Times. Long ago, I wondered why, if she liked Trump, did Althouse spend so much time and energy blogging the Times. It is now obvious to me; she's a quasi-New Yorker, like Trump. And like all New Yorkers, she's a bit wedded to the Times. They can't live without it, it seems. Obsessing about what the Times gets right and wrong.

For my part, I stick with the Wall Street Journal. Seems simple enough to me, for anybody who doesn't care for the Times Editorial Board and Publishers.

Kanye later went on the Today Show and apologized to Bush. He said he didn't understand how what he said was wrong until after the Taylor Swift/Grammys incident when he was on the receiving end of the same type of backlash.

A middle-class black nerd, Kanye has never had the street cred of his fellow rappers, and probably feels alienated by that culture.

Michael K,

Would it really require a shift?

Blacks do not turn out as much as they should. Suppose the vote didn't shift, with those currently voting Demmie continuing to vote Demmie

But, suppose also a large number of blacks that don't currently vote decided that "Hey, having a job feels pretty good. Maybe I'll go vote for President Trump and his boys and girls."

That would shift the percentages without shifting actual votes.

In other words, I agree with you but I think there is another way it could happen too. I suspect we will see some of both. Perhaps a bit this year, even more in 2020.

As you note, it won't take much.

Somehow, for Drago, the Times much be wrong/false/mistaken 100% of the time. No one must ever be in agreement with the Times.

No matter, that I am a practicing Republican who disagrees vehemently with the Times on everything from judicial selection to guns to same-sex marriage to taxes and spending to climate change to immigration.

What the Trump-cult demands of me, is that I never criticize Trump. And never criticize Trump in any terms that might mirror the Times' criticism of Trump. 100% loyalty to Trump is what is demanded. And 100% error on the part of the Times is your expectation. It's a completely foolish position, that no one should take seriously. No one should take you seriously, Drago.

Over the last 15 to 25 years, a Dem/Repub axis sold US manufacturing to Mexico and China thus ruining Milwaukee, Cleveland, Buffalo, Toledo, Cincinnati - dozens of American cities - and the blacks in those ruined cities continued to vote for the Dems. But now the Republicans who support Trump have started re-industrializing and this has gotten employment up and taxes down whereas the Dems are refusing to work on re-industrializing and even talking about getting rid of cars, i.e., getting rid of the city of Detroit. Nice for the people of Detroit. But the Dems expect the blacks in the cities, including Detroit, to vote for them, anyhow. "We don't have to give them nothing; just tell them Republicans are the KKK; and give 'em a sandwich on election day; and we've got the city blacks." Pretty cynical, Dems. Maybe you should do something for your voters even if they are too poor to spend the time to see through your lies. Will your ugliness work? Maybe. And maybe Kanye West is expressing an underground thought-surge like the surge that elected Trump. So far Trump means jobs and a tax cut; so far the Dems have promised to destroy manufacturing - again - and take away the tax cut. Maybe the city blacks know the Dem agenda.

The Times just cracked the $1 billion subscription-revenue mark.

For most of the second term of the Obama Administration, the NYT stock price hovered around 13.50. It took off in 2017, hitting a high of 25 in February, and closing at more than 22 today.

(Look at the 5-year trend line on that page.)

If you want, you can say that almost all publicly-traded stock prices are up in that time period. Fine, if you want to say that. But what you cannot say is that the NYT is "failing." It isn't, any more than Ford Motor company is "failing" or Exxon is "failing" or Apple is "failing." On a percentage basis, the Times has done as well as any of those companies since 2016.

If it happens, I expect that it will have a religious component. Blacks are apparently the most devout Christian demographic in the country. Esp the women. Whether you look at Church attendance, reading off and studying the Bible, or praying on a daily basis. The problem that the Dems have here is that they routinely denigrate White evangelicals, but ignore that a large percentage of their Black constituency are even more from ndamental. My guess is that they have been able to bridge this by giving Black clergy a seat at the table. That is how though that I would try to sway Black Christians through their religion. Pray with them, etc.

On the other hand, Ann remains to blame for not adequately informing her readers about the extent of her reading. This she explains by the constraints of time. Fair enough.

I remember, maybe 15 years ago, I got a phone call--this was back when I had a "landline"--from a woman who was trying to sell subscriptions to the New York Times. I was living in Raleigh, North Carolina, and this woman, I swear, she was so convinced that I was ignorant without the New York Times.

I was like, "we have a newspaper."

I wasn't actually a registered Republican then. I was in the south so I was a Democrat-who-always-voted-Republican. They used to call us "boll weevils." I have no idea why. Anyway, I know I didn't tell this woman I was a Republican. But I might have told her that I was a boll weevil. Which probably confused the hell out of her.

Don't ask me why I was a registered Democrat who always voted for Republicans. It's hot down here and we're not in any hurry.

Anyway, when I moved to Georgia they made me pick a party, and "independent" was not allowed.

"Okay," I said, "I'm a Republican." Which is like my mini-me version of a Kanye West moment.

Oh sure, I had been voting for Republicans since I was, um, 18. But registering as a Republican? Out in the open? That was new. There are 50 million Republicans. It's a major political party. It's totally allowed. But I still had a tiny niggling sense of Uh-oh.

And it's kind of fascinating, if you think about it, how much of the Democrat party relies upon fear to keep people in line. Specifically, the fear is that you will be called a racist (if you're white), or a self-hating mentally ill person (if you're brown or black). It's shameful and evil that Democrats do this, and it would be wonderful if it stopped working for them. It would be wonderful for our country, for race relations, for ordinary people.

The election and its aftermath have been an education in how the smart set responds when the American people refuse the judgment of their self-styled betters. In its most honest form, it is the “Resist!” movement. In the more genteel version, it turns out to mean not just opposing Mr. Trump’s policies, which people can reasonably do, but throwing fairness and principle to the wind so long as it might help bring down the 45th president. Consider:

• In the thick of the 2016 election, the New York Times ran a front-page article in which it advertised that the particular dangers posed by Mr. Trump’s candidacy meant that the long-held norm of journalism—objectivity—might have to give way to a more oppositional approach.

• Good liberals once found the idea of spying on American citizens without just cause unconscionable. But when the target is a former Trump campaign associate, it becomes OK to get a warrant based on an unverified dossier paid for by the Hillary Clinton campaign.

• James Clapper, President Obama’s director of national intelligence, revised procedures to make it easier for executive branch officials to “unmask” the names of Americans in intelligence reports and share the information among themselves, making leaks all but inevitable. The illegal leak of Mike Flynn’s name in connection with a phone conversation with Russia’s ambassador was one result. But again, it doesn’t matter because he was a Trump transition official.

• When Sally Yates was acting attorney general and President Trump issued an executive order on immigration she objected to, Ms. Yates ordered the entire Justice Department not to obey, despite a finding from the department’s Office of Legal Counsel that the order was lawful. She was applauded in her insubordination by Andrew Weissmann, then a Justice attorney, who now serves on Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team. But it’s all for a good cause, right?

• In the middle of a #MeToo moment ostensibly all about more respect for women, the president’s press secretary, Sarah Sanders, has been derided as everything from a “summer whore” to “a slightly chunky soccer mom.” Though the columnist who wrote the latter has since apologized, the accomplished Mrs. Sanders must wonder what happened to “when they go low, we go high?”

• The pardon power enjoyed by the president is among the most unfettered in the Constitution. But because the president is Mr. Trump, and the pardon for controversial Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio, the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has opted for lawlessness: appointing a special prosecutor to investigate the pardon’s legitimacy, in clear violation of the separation of powers.

Meanwhile, week after week, the same people who accuse Mr. Trump of lacking depth and nuance toss off allusions to Hilter, Stalin and a parade of murderous dictators. Channeling Mrs. Clinton, they insist that anyone who would chose Mr. Trump over her—or God forbid, agree to serve in a Trump administration—isn’t just wrong but forever morally tainted.

The people aren’t stupid. The 63 million Americans who voted for Mr. Trump—some as an unappealing but better alternative to Mrs. Clinton, but many with gusto—recognize that what is going on here is a concerted effort to overturn the results of a legitimate presidential election. Is it really unreasonable to ask whether this might be as much of a threat to American democracy as anything Mr. Trump has said or done?

It took us years to break out of our major newspaper-and-magazine habit. We would spend almost $1000 a year on magazine and newspaper subscriptions, besides the stuff we got at work.

Sebastian said...

Ah, yes, the vaunted New York Times. Sending a crack reporter, Amy Chozick, to cover Hill. Here's WaPo on this brilliant journalist's memoirs:

". . . Hillary, whose media strategy amounted to her ignoring us.

The “us” here includes Chozick and the other reporters following the Clinton campaign. She is indignant whenever Clinton disregards them, and she obsesses over what the candidate thinks of her. “I still wanted, more than anything, for Hillary to see me as a fair reporter,” Chozick worries early in the race. “She really, really hates me,” Chozick moans to her husband over the phone during a stop in Iowa. “The less I interacted with Hillary,” Chozick writes as campaign reporters seem to get less and less access to Clinton, “the greater her imperial hold on my brain became.”

Yes, she chases Hillary. But it is Chozick who gets caught.

Memoirs are supposed to be self-involved — that’s the point of the exercise. The thing about Chozick’s memoir, though, is that it’s also about being self-involved. In her mind, Chozick’s connection to Clinton assumes epic dimensions. “Ours was destined to be an impossible, tortured, and unrelentingly tense relationship weighed down by old grudges and fresh grievances,” she writes. “To Hillary, I was a big ego with no brain and no amount of cordial small talk could make up for the bad blood between her world and mine.” For a second you almost forget that Clinton is running against Trump."

This person, we are told, is an indispensable purveyor of news, a source we cannot do without.

I'm almost tempted to restart the subscription I let lapse after that bunch of traitors revealed, for no reason whatsoever, how we were going after terrorist financing.

buwaya said...

"how did other journalistic entities exist prior to the creation of the NYT/WP/NPR?"

There has been a huge amount of consolidation.
Many of these failed due to the loss of local advertising, squeezed out by more centralized sources like Craigslist, but also for "prestige" placements, the NYT and etc.

The other thing is extreme cost increases within the consolidated venues. These hire expensive people in expensive cities. It makes it difficult to hire an adventurous kid out of High School or an officer on leave who wants to report on the Iraq War as a sideline on campaign (what the London Times used to do for foreign correspondents).

There are vastly fewer but more expensive reporters, who concentrate on the very narrow subset of the world (somewhere in Washington or NY mainly) that matters to their owners.

You said "more successful than ever." The current stock price is around $22. 15-20 years ago it was at about $48, more than double, and closer to triple if you adjust for inflation. I already acknowledged that it has blipped up recently.

Aha. Now I see your point. It pains me, but I am forced to admit that you are right. I used a figure of speech, "more successful than ever" in describing the Times and the fact is that the Times, like virtually every other newspaper, is not as dominant a feature of the world's news (and therefore diminished financially) than before, say, the dawn of the internet revolution. It's funny, but the Wall Street Journal may be a notable exception that proves that particular rule.

So I was wrong to say that the New York Times is "more successful than ever." It is probably "more successful than any time in this young century." But hardly any newspaper can any more claim that it is "more successful than ever." Including the Times. And again, of course, the New York Times is not "failing," in any financial sense and it is not "failing" in any journalistic sense.

Good and thoughtful conservative critics have gone after lots of the editorial decisions made by the Times. Bernard Goldberg; Jonah Goldberg; Brent Bozell; there are many interesting (and largely NeverTrump) conservatives who know a good bit about criticizing the liberal media. I'd never want to defend everything coming out of the Times. Just as I'd never want to try to criticize everything coming out of the Times.

I want to be clear about language, including when I have made an error. I want to be nothing like Donald Trump, who is routinely unclear in his language and who has almost never admitted when he is wrong or when he has misspoken.

I feel a bit sorry for Jonah Goldberg. The Clintons hate him because his mother, Lucianne Goldberg, worked with Linda Tripp to expose the Clinoton/Lewinsky affair. Trump hates Goldberg because he has said intemperate things about Trump. And Trump is in the habit personalizing his hates.
I haven't read Goldberg's new book yet, but I hope to find some contrition in it. The mainstream "conservative" movement has failed utterly. The best example I can think that proves this is the the ERA -- the Equal Rights Amendment -- failed to pass, but all of its provisions, and more, have been implemented over the last four decades by the courts and the administrative state. These are the least "republican" institutions in our government. And this while the nominally conservative, constitutionalist Republican party has held congress for 24 of the last 28 years, and held the presidency for 19 of the last 37 years.
Whatever establishment conservatism is, it has failed utterly, and it needs to be reformed..

Is it Jonah Goldberg who might be correct in describing a cruder, populist fuck you establishment Trumpism as partially misguided and following a path of greater Europeanization and identity politics (a more character challenged, semi principled NYC real estate developer taking up your interests)...or might you be correct in describing a more European, Popperian, Schumpeterian libertarianism conservatism sometimes reflexively attacking Trump, being wired into the establishment which has often compromised and potentially abandoned many conservative principles?

Can’t you both be correct in many ways? Don’t you still have the same enemies of the radical Left wielding a lot of cultural and political influence and relentlessly seeking power over the institutions they don’t see as legitimate?

"Amy Chozick, the Times’ Hillary embed in 2016, confesses in her new book Chasing Hillary: Ten Years, Two Presidential Campaigns, and One Intact Glass Ceiling that she cried when she wrote about Clinton’s defeat, that she had been “an admirer . . . chasing this luminous figure” since meeting Clinton as an awed child at a signing event for It Takes a Village, that she has dreams in which the two of them are buddies trying on clothes together at Zara, that “it felt damn good” to “bask in the girl power” when Clinton clinched the Democratic nomination, that a campaign video praising Clinton meant for the Democratic convention (but never used) “gave me the chills,” that when she touched Clinton’s shoulder at a party she “felt the luscious satin of her chartreuse tunic beneath my palm,” and that she thought Clinton’s email scandal was no more a matter of national interest than Bristol Palin’s pregnancy had been. Chozick sounds like Peter Daou or any other Clinton crony when she excoriates voters who say, “They’d vote for a woman, just not THAT woman. . . . I wanted to scream at every critic that thirty years of sexist attacks had turned her into that woman. That sooner or later, the higher we climb, the harder we work, we all become that woman.”

With reporters like these, who needs flacks? Chozick is such a Hillary fangirl that in the book she continues to protect Clinton’s ruthless, nasty, paranoid band of aides by granting them anonymity."
