At Diana's Café...
... you can take aim at anything.
And you can shop for almost anything at Amazon, using the Althouse Portal — the link to which is always in the banner and in the sidebar. Me, I decided to replace all my brooms. I got a horsehair push broom, a microfiber mop system, and a broom/dustpan thingie. The floors are going to be so clean.
UPDATE: The broom/dustpan thingie arrived broken, and the plastic part in question looks fairly breakable, so I withdraw my recommendation.

Diana the huntress!
Trumpit will be triggered.
The sculptor is Augustus Saint-Gaudens. This is his only nude sculpture, of the goddess Diana. You can make her take aim at anything you want just by changing your own point of view.
The museum is the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
July 18, 1969 was a very good political weekend for President Richard Nixon.
1. His greatest political threat, Sen. Teddy Kennedy (D-Mass), killed a young woman, while driving drunk off a bridge in Chappaquiddick.
2. Neil Armstrong and crew landed safely on the Moon, thrilling our entire nation, and the world.
The first version – built by the W. H. Mullins Manufacturing Company in Salem, Ohio – was 18 ft (5.5 m) tall and weighed 1,800 lb. She was nude, too--the body of Julia "Dudie" Baird and the face of Davida Johnson Clark, Saint-Gaudens's long-time model and mother of his illegitimate son Louis.
The bow string is too short for the bow.
She's nude? Looks like she has a loin cloth or something. Or does nude mean topless in the art world.
Nude.
Diana's nudity offended moral crusader Anthony Comstock and his New York Society for the Suppression of Vice. To placate Comstock and to increase the likelihood of its catching the wind, Saint-Gaudens draped the figure in cloth, but the cloth blew away. When the statue was moved to be exhibited at the Columbian Exhibition in Chicago, the Women's Christian Temperance Union protested its exhibit on top of the Women's Pavilion and insisted that the controversial nude figure be clothed. Instead, it was placed atop the Agricultural Building.
Diana's Cafe meet Cafe Diana.
I'm rather fond of the one in Philly.
Coincidentally I corrected a coworker on an Athena - Artemis matter just the other day. I am presuming HR is going to visit me soon with a ticket...
IMHO, Athena has done better brandwise than Apollo or Artemis/Diana over the centuries. Cooler heads prevail. I am not knowledgeable about art, maybe Diana is more of an attractive character to paint / sculpt.
Nude, eh. That would make the original 18' even more interesting.
Brookgreen Gardens by night (w Diana)
Plan your visit for 2018
Evelyn Nesbit never looked better, even when Elizabeth McGovern played her in Ragtime (1981).
"Diana's nudity offended moral crusader Anthony Comstock and his New York Society for the Suppression of Vice"
" the Women's Christian Temperance Union protested its exhibit on top of the Women's Pavilion and insisted that the controversial nude figure be clothed."
I expect exactly the same thing would happen today. The complainers would bear a different label and the philosophical justifications for their opinions will be much less sound, but the same thing really.
Augustus Saint-Gaudens was fairly famous for his gold coin engravings.
Remember the famous cross examination in A Few Good Men? Tom Cruz’s character had Jack Nicholson’s character (Col. Jessep) on the stand, and got him to confess because of a contradiction in Jessep’s testimony. Jessep said his orders were always followed, or men died. Yet, he had to give an order to not disobey an order. It’s eerily similar to Susan Rice’s email to herself that Obama wanted the Russia investigation handled “by the book”. Obama’s administration was supposed to be scandal-free and transparent. So why the need to order things be done “by the book?”
Apparently they have discovered an unexploded bomb in Austin. That should help.

Today's music cafe link within the Cafe Post is Valetina Lisitsa playing Schubert's Ave Maria
Simply divine!
Saint-Gaudens also created many Civil War memorials, including the Boston Commons tribute to Robert Gould Shaw and the black soldiers who formed the Massachusetts 54th Regiment. It's shown at the end of the fine movie "Glory."

Diana is an aggressive huntress in a woman's body. She sounds like fun.

I take it Samantha Stevens' likeness was far more attractive than poor Lucy's statue was:

"The museum is the Indianapolis Museum of Art."
Then you could have titled the post "IN-Diana's Cafe."
I like the Pompeii Apollo.
So it turns out that Evelyn Nesbit was not the model, but Doctorow made it up when he wrote Ragtime. Fake news !
Big news. Scrunchies are baaaack. W Magazine included scrunchies on its trend list for 2018. And they were spotted at NY fashion week. Even though this is fluffy news, there is a Supreme Court connection. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg has famously never stopped wearing scrunchies.

Thank you tcrosse, that is indeed a favorite of mine. And no Professor, Chico can't play like that.
How about a change of pace? Sarasate - Gypsy Airs/Zigeunerweisen
the body of Julia "Dudie" Baird
Was that to preserve her modesty or was she a butterface?
Looks like with all that hunting, Diana could have saved an animal skin or two.
Is that an ersatz Sargent portrait behind her or a real one?
In addition to the headline lapse, Mr. Mead-itor let another error slip through:

Yur welcome.
Here, in part, is Ralph Peters' last email to Fox News colleagues:
On March 1st, I informed Fox that I would not renew my contract. The purpose of this message to all of you is twofold:
I feel compelled to explain why I have to leave. Four decades ago, I took an oath as a newly commissioned officer. I swore to "support and defend the Constitution," and that oath did not expire when I took off my uniform. Today, I feel that Fox News is assaulting our constitutional order and the rule of law, while fostering corrosive and unjustified paranoia among viewers. Over my decade with Fox, I long was proud of the association. Now I am ashamed.
In my view, Fox has degenerated from providing a legitimate and much-needed outlet for conservative voices to a mere propaganda machine for a destructive and ethically ruinous administration. When prime-time hosts--who have never served our country in any capacity--dismiss facts and empirical reality to launch profoundly dishonest assaults on the FBI, the Justice Department, the courts, the intelligence community (in which I served) and, not least, a model public servant and genuine war hero such as Robert Mueller--all the while scaremongering with lurid warnings of "deep-state" machinations-- I cannot be part of the same organization, even at a remove. To me, Fox News is now wittingly harming our system of government for profit.
As a Russia analyst for many years, it also has appalled me that hosts who made their reputations as super-patriots and who, justifiably, savaged President Obama for his duplicitous folly with Putin, now advance Putin's agenda by making light of Russian penetration of our elections and the Trump campaign. Despite increasingly pathetic denials, it turns out that the "nothing-burger" has been covered with Russian dressing all along. And by the way: As an intelligence professional, I can tell you that the Steele dossier rings true--that's how the Russians do things.. The result is that we have an American president who is terrified of his counterpart in Moscow.
So, to all of you: Thanks, and, as our president's favorite world leader would say, "Das vidanya."
Let's ask the "model public servant" about his anthrax investigation.
Let's ask the "model public servant" about his part in the Uranium One scandal.
Poor Peters has lost it.
Ralph Peters wants an actual shooting war with the Russians, and he always has.
Anything less is failure and appeasement to Peters.
If you find yourself in agreement with Peters, you better be prepared to gear up and head on out on the next troop transport.
$20 Au
Ralph Peters is a fucking liar. You have to be a liar or pretty stupid to believe that anyone has made a case against Trump for being a Russian puppet. It was a stupid lie from the beginning made up out of whole cloth. The people saying it didn't believe it--they only pretended that they did to find something else to use against Trump. Remember the ones saying it were kissing Russia's ass when the Soviet Union was our foremost enemy. The Russia lie was intended to turn Republicans away from Trump because they still have ill feelings from the Cold War. Democrats like Ted Kennedy were sending secret love messages to the Politburo telling them that the Democrats would keep Reagan in check or get rid of him.
"And no Professor, Chico can't play like that."
I didn't say he played like her or even that she always plays like him, only that "La Campanella" and the way she played it reminded me of the approach he used to get comedy out of his piano playing. I presume she intended a humorous effect. My point wasn't about the skill level.
Victor Borge was more my speed for comedy piano.
"In addition to the headline lapse, Mr. Mead-itor let another error slip through..."
Hey, dummie, he wasn't detecting an error. He was perceiving and performing some word play
In olden times, men carried words as weapons and engaged in wordplay.
What? Is Peters moving over to CNN?
All the people warning Trump not to fire the guy investigating him make me wish they had these guts when Obama was firing IGs investigating him.
But, another plus to having a Republican in the White House is people start to care about investigations against the White House.
Diana in Melancholy
Moon hangs low, flash-bulb’s misty flicker cast
Over city and sea, slashing pale light
Across face and form, female yet feminine
Only by hints. Suggested beauty hides
Harried hunter from hunted quarry. Ang-
Ular craters shade once joyfully mad smiles.
She sits in frosty solace, determined
By November’s bower, stone monument
Among trees, park bench for pedestal
Resting to pass time in past pastime’s time:
Fields yield to Echo’s memories,
Remember unforgotten forests.
She who yearns for sylvan retreat,
Strives to flee love’s turmoiled tempests
In cave’s dumb-show of fire light
Where perfect figure and furious
Girdle, breastplate, greaves and quiver
Sing fire-fringed and golden barbs
Free of ardor, eschewal of herbs
That seduce hearts to sleep and toss
On hard ground by flowing river
For full moon, harvest time and hunt
For death-throes and animal grunt.
For game’s lust-want and spilled blood-loss,
Her face – reeling out through slow sequences
Of expression, reaches resolution
Through tiny moons moistening eye’s blebbed cor-
Ners, dulling out black, black, black…clubbed
By bear’s paw, lion’s claw, boar’s tusk, love’s musk.
Dull clouds, too, seek moon’s muscular embrace.
Sky’s denseness worries with silhouettes,
Beautiful steel-grey clouds knocking bolts
Through tension of beautiful steel-grey eyes.
Moon hangs low, waiting, wary of its quarry.
As an intelligence professional, I can tell you that the Steele dossier rings true--that's how the Russians do things.. The result is that we have an American president who is terrified of his counterpart in Moscow.
So, to all of you: Thanks, and, as our president's favorite world leader would say, "Das vidanya."
Well, when you have a steel trap mind like that!
"And by the way: As an intelligence professional, I can tell you that the Steele dossier rings true--that's how the Russians do things."
-- The Russians have Hillary Clinton pay British spies?
So... is he saying Hillary Clinton is a Russian operative?
Trump congratulating Putin raises questions of collusion with the US in the Russian election.
Former President Barack Obama used his executive powers to impose industry regulations that lowered the value of certain companies and led to financial gains for a firm owned by two close family friends, according Breitbart editor-at-large Peter Schweizer. The admissions were revealed in Schweizer’s new book, “Secret Empire,” which found a pattern of investments in coal, offshore mining and for-profit universities that closely tracked the Obama administration’s regulatory policy changes. Billionaire activists Tom Steyer and George Soros were among the beneficiaries. “It’s the new wave of corruption in Washington, D.C.,”
It's Breitbart, so they don't know that this kind of follow-the-money stuff only works against Republicans. It's a logical fallacy to use it against Democrats.
If Ralph Peters believes that Trump is a bigger threat to our constitution than Obama he can kiss my ass.
Lots of Ralphing here last night. Hope people made it to the big white phone.
Biden spoke to high schoolers yesterday, bragging that he was a high school bully who used to beat up fat, insecure kids in the locker room if he overheard them exaggerating (in Biden’s judgement) their success with girls. No, I’m not making this up! But it was all good, see, because that would have included Trump. Never mind that a Trump wasn’t fat until very recently.

“He [Robin Williams] would take all his clothes off, he would be standing there totally naked and she [Pam Dawber] was trying to act” Gary Marshall said.
Williams committed suicide in 2014 at the age of 63.
That's an interesting paragraph.
It's gonna hurt when she lets go of that string.
And by "it's", I mean "tit's".
Or maybe "tits".
"It's gonna hurt when she lets go of that string."
'tis.
And by 'tis, I mean tas.
"Despite increasingly pathetic denials, it turns out that the "nothing-burger" has been covered with Russian dressing all along. And by the way: As an intelligence professional, I can tell you that the Steele dossier rings true--that's how the Russians do things.."
So it's the Wolfian "If it rings true.." standard for him? Was that in the Constitution?
Watch his next move.
I bought a broom and dustpan a few years ago that gets use every day and has held up well. I keep it in my bathroom and have to sweep up tracked cat-litter several times a day. Pretty sure it's this one from Home Depot: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Quickie-HomePro-Flip-Lock-Dust-Pan-and-Lobby-Broom-Set-429/202996481
