Any good CEO knows that he can't do everything himself. He has to hire competent people whose judgment he trusts and delegate authority to them, and then hold them accountable for their results. In President Trump's case, most of his choices have been sound, and the ones that weren't didn't last long. President Obama came into the White House with no executive experience and a belief that he already knew everything he needed to know. The results speak for themselves.

I am being micromanaged more and more each day. The more it happens, the more I am compelled to seek employment elsewhere. I suspect I'll have a new job in less than a year. You can use a management buzz phrase: "I empower my employees and give them the freedom to make decisions on there own after setting clear expectations and guidelines..." but the reality is, it is better for all to solve problems at the lowest level possible. Plus, I'm busy. Do your job and leave me alone unless you want or need some clarification or top cover or if I need to know incase someone gets all butt hurt and will complain. Mentor and coach and trust your people. And learn from mistakes, because if you do let them do their job, they will occasionally make one. And that is OK, as long as it isn't the same one over and over again.

I came here to write this. This is SOP in functioning organizations. If you micromanage from the top you don't need the underlings, except to take the fall for your fuck ups. Better not to have a leader expecting to fuck up.

This is the value of hiring a real executive to run things, as opposed to a community organizer. Effective executives hire Type A people to run divisions (in this case departments) and give them the freedom to succeed. Micromanagement is a sign of an insecure Type B executive, who doesn't have the skills to really LEAD people and tends to hire Type C and D so as not to be overshadowed by high-performing underlings. Obama hiring Hillary is a classic example. Hillary was a terrible executive, a poor leader who has a small group of sycophants but left a department in chaos and despised following procedure so much that she left Obama innumerable headaches that are only now coming to light.
It all flows from the guy/gal at the top. Personnel is policy. Insert your favorite Drucker aphorism (or Dilbert cartoon) here.

Every bad development for the years 2009-2016 and every good development since January 20, 2017, has been unexpected by the media. I wonder what changed.

That makes the writer a brain dead propaganda apparatchik that went to sleep in 2009 and has yet to awaken. And, unexpectedly, Trump looks better by merely not intentionally destroying the USA every way possible.
The downside to this method is Trump second guessing his agency heads and cabinet officers, as is rumored with Commerce and EPA.

I agree with JML and Clyde. Good top managers find people they trust to meet their goals within guidelines set by the boss. As a corollary, they ruthlessly get rid of people who can't get the job done. We've seen and are still seeing both behaviors by Trump, and we will continue to see them.
Dubya, with his Harvard MBA, was into delegation, but not so good with the ruthless. He should have replaced Rumsfeld way before he did, for instance, and Cheney should have been dropped from the ticket in 2004 and Tenet paid no price for tilting the collected intelligence on Iraq. OTOH, replacing General Casey with General Petraeus was a very good example of managing by results.
Trump is so hands off that he has allowed Tillerson to stay on even though Trump fired him in December.
As several people have pointed out, President Trump is simply being the competent manager that Mr Trump, the entrepreneur/businessman was.
It is one of the reasons he was hired to be our President. He is competent at hiring good, competent, people, giving them broad goals then leaving them alone to accomplish them.
It is why he has been able to get so much accomplished in just a year.
I liked what someone pointed out about him keeping the press spun up over trivia all the time. Because they are spun up over his (allegedly) calling Haiti a shithole, nobody notices all the real things that his secretaries are getting done.

The CIA is not all about spying. One of their important functions is to take publicly available information and use it to assess economic and political developments and trends that impact national security. This kind of work inherently reflects the world view (pejoratively "bias") of the analyst. Likely as many errors arise from consumption of ideologically tainted misanalysis as anything else. The most well known is the failure of the intelligence community to understand how close to collapse the Soviet Union was. Fortunately others had their own sources and conclusions. Overall the job is not easy under any circumstance but the political pressures and preconceptions make it even more tricky.
1. Know what you want to happen (the "vision thing")
2. Hire good people who agree with you (the "talent thing").
3. Set goals. If necessary, review their plans (the "strategery thing")
4. Let them loose, with occasional look-ins and props for good work! (the "leadership thing")
5. Sack their ass if they can't fulfill the strategery, or they turn out to be bad apples ("the management thing.")
