The writing is by the actress Amber Tamblyn, published in the NYT as the Golden Globes are about to happen this evening. The plan tonight, which Tamblyn supports, is for all the women to wear black. I'm going to watch to see how that works out. I'm not sure that everyone wearing the same color is the best way to send whatever the message is supposed to be, but Tamblyn says:
What we are wearing is not a statement of fashion. It is a statement of action. It is a direct message of resistance. Black because we are powerful when we stand together with all women across industry lines. Black because we’re starting over, resetting the standard. Black because we’re done being silenced and we’re done with the silencers. Tonight is not a mourning. Tonight is an awakening.So that is the message that Tamblyn intends to convey, but is it the message every woman who feels disciplined into wearing black wants to send? Is it the message that will be received? Tamblyn tries to preempt one meaning of black clothing: mourning. But she just got done saying that unintended messages are "often... perceived... whether we like it or not."
She doesn't want to be controlled, but she aims to control us, the audience, but she knows she can't. Moviemakers show us images, and there is complexity to the meaning. You can't force us to see the images in a particular, controlled way, even in the most carefully made film. So it is clearly impossible to dictate the impact that will be made by giant crowd of actresses in black and by individual actresses within that crowd.
I'll watch with an open mind.

My daughter said the exact same thing yesterday about an Audrey Hepburn movie.
Part of my daughter's "education" (she is 26) was watching old Audrey Hepburn movies with me - "Breakfast at Tiffany's", "Charade", "Sabrina", "My Fair Lady". She will never have Hepburn's figure, but she understands the terms "style", elegance, and slutty. So proud of her - and I never had to say very much.
As to my son, we watched quite a few Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart (especially Hitchcock) movies - he gets it as well. Proud of him as well - he's getting married this summer and he and his fiancée recently mentioned that they are worried about how most of their their mid-20 friends will behave at the wedding because it is a first for their "group".

Speaking of Jean Shepherd: I think about him a lot these days, and not just because of "A Christmas Story." He never explicitly delved into politics (thank God), probably because he thought it stupid to turn to entertainers for political enlightenment. But he said enough that you could get the feeling he had seen what "liberalism" was becoming, and that it wasn't pretty. I remember he took particular exception to a bumper sticker of the time, "If you're human you'll vote for . . ." Shep wouldn't name the candidate only humans would vote for, but I remember the bumper sticker, and it was for McGovern against Nixon. He said something like, "Really? People who vote for a different candidate than you'd vote for aren't human? Seriously?" I also remember him poking fun at the insularity of the Politically Pious, and how--if he pointed out their biases--would indignantly say something like, "Well, that's not bias! That's just how enlightened people think!"

I viewed the women's gowns from a link on Drudge. The black worked, but not for the protest. The black worked because it hid all the usual design extremes these gowns usually exhibit.

Many men live in a form of stasis for years, decades. They are who they are, and they are consistent, even if they only seem consistent in their inconsistency. Even these guys, you can at least tell where their inconsistency is going to go: some alcohol-related poor decision, most likely. It usually falls under "You know better than that," and they do, when they sober up: they have a sense of shame.

But for these guys, you can tell the shame is gone. They don't feel this is something they need to hide anymore. Usually it is other women who might make snide comments about her clothes. She probably chalks it up to jealousy, and she is probably right. She doesn't dress in an expensive manner, just with taste, and she cares for her clothes: they are clean, no wrinkles, no stains. I watched the Oprah speech. It was good. She's very good on TV. I think she makes a big mistake about the media. They aren't entitled to their own truth. Their own truth is weasel words for lies. She sure got all those powerful women in the room riled up. I wonder if they now feel powerful enough to utilize the justice system, the one with a presumption of innocence, or if they expect the new one ripe for abuse will continue.
If she ran for President could she cobble together enough knowledge of macroeconomics or foreign policy to fake it?
The Warren/Kamala/Oprah/ Democratic debate would be fun. Throw Joe Biden in there for kicks.

Women have been wearing black for eons.They made no special effort.
I have scanned news across the internet, and I still have no idea who won any of the awards, not that I care. Who is surprised that the purpose of the gathering get almost no coverage.
FWIW, I have zero interest the opinion of a self centered entertainer, that has no interest in world outside their myopic view of the world

Subconciously they are wearing black because of all the years they knew and understood what was going on and chose to remain quiet about it. So the wearing of black is a signal to young women and girls that they need to understand that they must take a turn on the casting couch to get a job in the business world. What a gaggle of hypocrites cheapening their gender. Pretty good at marketing though, it seems.
They should have dressed as jesters to symbolize women's roles as entertainers for the court. That would remove the ambiguity of the black dress. Are they mourning at the tomb of the unknown baby? Progress. Positive progress. No, they are celebrating the ignorance of female chauvinism.
It was so nice of the Hollywood elitists to take time out from raping each other and molesting children to let us know how we need to change our moral values.
Everyone of those phonies knew about Weinstein, or another serial rapist and abuser, and consciously remained silent to benefit their own careers. Many of them traded sex for career advancement.
