Love is love and I love this.

"Huma Abedin and Anthony Weiner withdraw their divorce."

Can't spouses refuse to give testimony against each other, at least in most instances? Safe to assume Abedin wanted the divorce, but now she may see great value in keeping the marriage legally alive, for now. What does that say about what she sees in her future?

Yep. I'm another cynic.

These two sick people need each other, sick love. Two sick people plus love equals all is well. Well, we'll see.

Bay Area Guy said...

Hey, reconciliation is almost always a good thing. The more salient question is whether Huma will sleep with him again, so that he doesn't go crazy.

jaydub said...

I wonder how much this is costing the Clinton Foundation.

Earnest Prole said...

Once again, run, don't walk, to see the documentary Weiner.

Martha said...

Huma and Weiner are following the Clinton marriage model—it’s the convenience stupid! nothing to do with LOVE!

Static Ping said...

This is like a parody of those true love stories. He's a compulsive online masturbator with a taste for underage girls, who threw away a bright political career and acquired a criminal record so he could text out photos of Mr. Weiner. She's a cutthroat political lackey of a rape enabler who loves oversharing in emails, specifically classified materials. Six months later, they were married. Six months later, they were divorced. Six month later, they were non-divorced.

William said...

There was a pressing need to reveal that Flynn lied because of the possibility that the Russians would blackmail him......,Wouldn't Weiner be some kind of blackmail magnet.? The Russians are hacking computers. Why wouldn't they hack his? Can anyone think of a more insecure place to to store sensitive data than Anthony Weiner's computer?

Chuck said...

Is he in jail? He's been sentenced, as I recall.

William said...

That fifteen year old girl who turned to Anthony Weiner for advice and sympathy because her classmates were making fun of the large size of her breasts may, in fact, turn out to be a Russian agent.

DKWalser said...

Is this all about the spousal privilege (preventing your spouse from testifying against you)?

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

It's the timing. Judicial Watch gets a FOIA response that implicates both Abedin and Weiner further in the mishandling of classified information, and reveals her "answers" to the FBI during the email clustermunch were, shall we say, lacking verisimilitude. And WHAM! the next day or so she is withdrawing their divorce papers.

Lyssa's instincts are pretty good. I'm with her.

I can see what is in it for her - spousal testimonial privilege. But wondered why he would take her back. Then I thought, first for the money (note where she was staying, despite being effectively nemployed this last year). And then for the girls. I am thinking that a promise by the Big Dog for a ride on his buddy Jeffrey Epstein's Lolita Express to his Pediphile Island would be all it would take to bring "Carlos Danger" Weiner around.

Matt Sablan said...

Maybe it is because I'm a naive optimist, but I think she may actually think this is best for the kid. Spousal testimony doesn't really matter since she'll likely never be charged, and if she is, they won't NEED his testimony to prove her emails ended up on his laptop.

Althouse you are such a cockeyed optimist and romantic. Even us cynics like knowing somewhere someone still believes in love.

Darkisland said...

Yeah, I'm cynical too. If it were any other two people, I would say good on them for keeping it out of court.

Them? Now?

I can't help but thinking spousal immunity enters into the calculation.

I do feel sorry for the kid though. If mom goes to jail, who takes care of him? Does he wind up with Hilary? As a sex offender, with this kid involved in the offense, would Weiner even be allowed to care for him when he gets out of stir?

I am happy to see both of them go down but it really sucks for the kid.

I also think a far better song than My Man for this hot mess would be Tammy Wynette's Stand by your man:

Sometimes it's hard to be a woman
Giving all your love to just one man
You'll have bad times, and he'll have good times
Doin' things that you don't understand
But if you love him, you'll forgive him
Even though he's hard to understand
And if you love him, oh be proud of him
'Cause after all he's just a man.
Stand by your man, give him two arms to cling to
And something warm to come to
When nights are cold and lonely.
Stand by your man, and show the world you love him
Keep giving all the love you can.
Stand by your man.

There's even a a Hilary connection. Remember when she said she was not a Stand by your man type of woman thinking it was about making cookies. The irony is that she did stand by her man more than most women would have. She knew that it was only standing by her man that kept her from being a Walmart clerk or PI lawyer in a strip mall.

As for Huma, I would dearly love some journalist to look at her citizenship. Yes, she is clearly an American, having been born here.

But does she also have a Pakistani (through her mother) or Saudi (where she grew up) passport?

And what about her lady parts? Are they intact? If her Saudi childhood was typical, probably not. That would explain a lot about Weiner. This is the kind of journalism that Stuttering John used to practice for Howard Stern. You know, honest journalism.

They did not agree to reconcile or postpone their divorce. they agreed to pursue the divorce outside of court. If anything (I think) the divorce will come sooner than it would have with a court case. So almost all of the comments here are based on a faulty understanding of the facts.

Bushman of the Kohlrabi said...

No need to worry about testimonial privileges. Immunity deals from the FBI rain down like confetti whenever Clinton associates are involved.

RichardJohnson said...

I am reminded a couple I know. When I met them, I assumed they were married, as they were living together. No, they were divorced- twice. Several years later they married so that they wouldn't have to testify against each other in a lawsuit. Three marriages, two divorces.

I found the husband easy to get along with. The wife I found insufferable. But the husband put up with it.

Huma and Anthony will do what they will. do. My only wish is that they do it quietly and that we never have to hear of their involvement in politics.

Chuck, per Wikipedia:

On November 6, 2017, Weiner reported to Federal Medical Center, Devens in Ayer, Massachusetts to begin his 21-month sentence.[81]

I wondered why a medical center. According to a CNN article linked by the footnote it is so he can receive treatment as a pervert, though he is not required to participate in rehabilitation.

Yeah, that makes no sense to me either

Weiner is one sick mf, but the deal was for sickness and health, richer/poorer, etc.

These times can be so very cynical.

Bay Area Guy said...

Weiner, a convicted felon, remains in prison. His wife, Huma, is a hot Muslim, former, future Chief of Staff to the former, next President of the United States, Hillary Clinton.

However, Huma forwarded classified documents to his Laptop, which detailed the Clintons' "pay to play" with their notorious Foundation.

I do not relish the predicament of Mr. Weiner.

Lyssa: "So, no reasonable person believes that this is about anything other than testimonial privileges in marriage, right?”

Devens is a medical facility but hospitals still need people to work in the kitchen, laundry, etc., so he is probably part of the work cadre there. He might earn 12 cents/hour at what is essentially forced labor. If he was placed there to keep him close to family, that's a good thing. I hope he has friends and family who will visit him; those connections will help him when he is released from prison.

Devens doesn't offer a sex offender treatment program. You are correct, that he wouldn't be required to take part in SOTP if it were offered. Treatment programs in a prison can be coercive and abusive and, besides, prisons aren't known as the employer who hires all the best.

He was given a lenient sentence; I hope he recognizes his good fortune and makes the best of his time in prison. I also hope he comes out of prison ready to join the fight to eliminate the sex offender registry.

Huma is probably just as kinky and perverted as Weiner. She just is smarter and has not been caught. Weird loves weird.

I quite enjoyed "Weiner" the documentary. Some hot blond Barbara something looked very unhappy with the choices she had made that ended up with her being Weiner's chief of staff. Not staff as in rigid penis either.

It's a loveless marriage tied to the Clinton Crime Machine. Huma was given all sorts of leeway by our biased hack FBI.

Holy Matrimony, or as it's called by the Clinton Coterie, "Friends with [Legal] Benefits".

Jaq said...

Getting divorced outside of the court system has the main benefit of keeping your finances private. Who wouldn't love to see an accurate financial affidavit from Harry Reid, for example.

I am with Lyssa 100%. She nailed the reason right out of the starting gate.

Jaq said...

Molly is a good girl who believes everything that the commenters at the WaPo say!

David said...

Does the testimonial privilege survive divorce? Should it? My first thought is that there are reasons why it should.

This will probably be my last thought on the subject too, unless someone else has considered the issue. Sorry. Priorities.

@Molly Your comment makes a certain amount of sense except that with a court divorce they would be forced to adhere to a schedule set by someone else. Out of court they can postpone the "divorce" proceedings if spousal privilege becomes an issue.

And Matthew: Now that Carlos has spent some time in jail perhaps he would like to make a deal on what he knows about Huma and the Wicked Witch. He certainly would like to make a deal to lessen the impact of his "sex offender" status which Darkisland points out can have draconian consequences.

With the Clintons and their hangers on, time and again, the most cynical possible reading of any set of facts is almost always the one that proves to be true.

House of cards, the first season, featured an Irish version of wiener, addicted to hooker and blow, married to a cut blonde wife, the tool of underwoods plot to take power. (Remember the writer started out working for achumer, then Hillary and finally dean)

Nah, I'm not buying the marriage privilege argument.

I'm going with Huma decided she really wants Weiner to "slide [his] cock in [her] slow at first, then harder, [his] balls ...slapping [her] ass. With each thrust [she] squeal[s] a little. [He] start[s] to fuck [her] so hard [her] tits almost hit [her] in the face. [She] reach[es] behind and spread[s] [her] ass.”

Hey, call me a romantic.

Leave aside the spousal privilege aspect, the thing I don't understand about the "political marriage" view of Abedin and Wiener's marriage: what constituency these days expects wives to stay with husbands who have done what Wiener did? What is the political benefit? Who would vote for either one of them, or donate more money to causes they associate with, because they are sticking with the marriage?

Their fellows on the Left care not one whit for traditional marriage norms. Their share of the Bible-thumper vote is practically zero even if they stay together.

Yancey Ward said...

Doesn't the privilege remain for actions that happened during the marriage? Or am I mistaken here?

very beautiful song

Jaq said...

Right, and if you settle out of court, you keep your finances out of the public record. There was a corrupt politician in Florida who was actually very popular and successful, that was caught in this way, by a financial affidavit made public during a divorce.

Jaq said...

The person with the most to hide loses in an out of court divorce.

MONEY!

I'm sure that MONEY has NOTHING to do with this choice. Absolute certain.

Forget New York's Equitable Distribution rules and what Hot Dog's legal leverage is in this situation or how many shekels are in Madame's bank account.

This is entirely about love.

Yep. No money issues here.

I think this is a better choice for Huma's theme song:

And for Hillary, too.

Sheesh! The choices some people make! Repeatedly!!!

Stephen said...

Lyssa is probably wrong. The privilege normally survives divorce for communications during the marriage. So Lyssa's posited motive doesn't make much sense.

William said...

If Huma or Anthony ever fall on hard times, either party could get a terrific advance for a tell all account of their marriage. Not as much as the hush money Hillary can offer, but, still, a nice bit of change.......I read the Caro books on LBJ. There were so many stories that weren't told about him when he was alive. Future generations will learn many illuminating facts about the Clintons and their coterie.

It's true that married couples have a marital privilege. It's also true that spouses can aid and abet and conspire with each other.

The question is -- if it hasn't been raised yet -- which one of them are they trying to protect?
