"Let me test you by making you nice hot cup of fish. A carp cappuccino."

Texts Meade, after sending me a link to "If someone has a poor sense of smell, it could be a warning sign they're a psychopath — here's why," which says some study "showed that people with stronger psychopathic traits found it harder to distinguish between common smells like coffee, fish, and oranges."

I interpreted his text to insinuate (jocosely) that I am a psychopath, since I have "a poor sense of smell," so it mattered to me that the poverty in question was in making distinctions between smells and not the general loss of the sense, which is my problem.

Anyway, I await my carpuccino.

ADDED: Now, he's sending me "Female psychopaths manage to subtly slip under society's radar: Here's why." Let me read it to see if my guess why is correct.

AND: According to the article, women "generally do not take responsibility for their actions, are deceitful, cunning, controlling, and manipulative." Oh. Wait. I'm misreading.

Women psychopaths generally do not take responsibility for their actions, are deceitful, cunning, controlling, and manipulative.

"Threat and coercion and a sense of entitlement to live off other people were found to be prevalent in women with this condition." Leave off "with this condition," and it's very sexist! "They can also be jealous and parasitic...."

UPDATE: Meade delivers:

I think liberals would score high on a psychopath test, yeah.

Psychopaths, generally. Men and women.

Man, I hate these non-peer-reviewed clickbait "studies". I studious avoid them, generally.

Obama, Hillary and Nancy Pelosi.

The headline is worth examining in itself.

"Female psychopaths manage to subtly slip under society's radar: Here's why."

Note the word 'subtly'.

Then note the characteristics ascribed to the female psychopaths.

If these characteristics are indeed subtle, they can only be subtle because they are nearly indistinguishable from a woman's 'regular' behavior: you barely can tell the difference.

Meanwhile, most people take a male psychopath to mean someone overtly violent, abusive: noticeably different from a 'regular' man's expected social behavior. The cliche of the psychopath boss is that he is an abusive asshole. Harvey Weinstein, perhaps.

Which is why generic traits of men slowly get pushed under the 'unacceptable' umbrella: we need to make the male psychopaths so subtle that most men can be suspected of being one.

Equality.

ah, the power of the prepositional phrase.

The "how" is either:

1. Women are so guileful and subtle that when they are psychopaths, they are better able to hide it than men are.

2. Women are in general more like psychopaths, so when they are psychopaths it's harder to tell.

I'm not saying that as my opinion but as the possible "how" in the article talking about the study.

There is also the question of whether they are using 'psychopath' and 'sociopath' interchangeably.

From the Internet, which is never wrong:

"Psychology researchers generally believe that psychopaths tends to be born — it’s likely a genetic predisposition — while sociopaths tend to be made by their environment."

So the women, being psychopaths, are born this way.

Their environment did not make them this way, so it cannot be blamed on the Patriarchy.

I bet they wished they used 'sociopath' instead. Because then it could be men's fault.

Missed opportunity for social justice.

Come to mind, I have met several great female psychopaths. And they were the best psychopaths in so many ways. Dull male psychopaths have a long way to go to catch up to their skill sets.

We didn't just dodge a bullet with Hillary's defeat. We dodged an all-out nuclear salvo.

As for a woman's poor sense of smell's alleged link to being a psychopath, I guess I'm safe. My wife's sense of smell is so good I've suggested she offer her services as a bloodhound. As an example, when she was early in her nursing career, she worked for a rehabilitation hospital. Before patients would be discharged, they had to show they were capable of taking care of themselves. The hospital had an apartment where the patients had to live for a time, doing all of the normal daily chores on their own. On one shift, she smelled something burning. They checked the apartment and the occupant had left a pot holder too near the stove's heating element. The apartment was a long way down a hallway from the nurse's station and its door was closed. My wife smelled it when it had just begun to singe.

Fish soup is a pretty common breakfast in some places.

Some of the staples in my pantry, which I am never without: Hon Dashi. Shiro Miso and red miso.

Miso soup with the bonito fish base, add tofu and nori and you have a very satisfying and quick breakfast drink.

Evidently I am only part psychopath because I like bitter flavors but still have a good sense of smell. I love a good whiskey sour! and have no empathy for people who create their own troubles.

But.....I can't watch the cat video because the little kitties might be suffering. My empathy with the and cats and dogs knows no bounds. Some people....not so much.

To be serious (for a change :-D )

My husband lost his sense of smell for a while. He had a bad sinus infection which caused the nerves in his nose (or something) to be pinched and damaged. Not dead, but damaged.. It was very unpleasant for him to lose his sense of smell, because food didn't taste or had little taste. There was texture, but not much taste. Basically, he was eating based on how he remembered that things were supposed to smell. Blech.

The doctor suggested this as therapy. Put into some small containers that you can't see through, various items that have distinctive odors. Starting with very strong, like garlic, lemons, vanilla extract, peppermint etc. Open a container. Sniff and try to guess. Over time, your brain will remember the smell through new neural pathways. As you re-learn the smells, able to identify vanilla, then change to others like cinnamon and so on.

It took some time, but his sense of smell has mostly recovered. Just an anecdotal story that doesn't apply to everyone.

mockturtle said...

Thanks for the idea, DBQ! Having had a history of allergy-related sinus infections I have also suffered a slight loss of olfactory acuity although it hasn't really affected my sense of taste. I think I'll try what you suggest. :-)

My father struggles with taste, or, food that used to taste good to him now tastes like blah. I'll ask him about the smells. He has always had a good sniffer.

Thanks - DBQ.

As for the film "kedi" - no cruelty. It actually restores a bit of faith in humanity. Bonus - an interesting glimpse into life in Istanbul.
