No movie has ever had a more charismatic couple than "Casablanca" — Humphrey Bogart and Claude Rains. The absolute best. There's also Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, which was just sublime and yet only the second-best couple in the film.

Maybe she could explain why they haven't lived together for so long. But that's a question that the press doesn't ask of people like Lauer or Clinton. Sometimes "inquiring eyes" don't want to know stuff, right? Journ-O-lism man!
Claude Rains is my favorite actor. I marvel at how good he makes lines. We remember "shocked, shocked" — as spoken by Claude Rains.
My favorite is "Deception" (where he's paired with my all-time favorite actress, Bette Davis). He has to deliver this line: "Like all women: white as a sheet at the sight of a couple of scratches... but calm and smiling as a hospital nurse in the presence of a mortal wound... Good night!"
Lauer's wife should have known that something wasn't right when she found in Matt's bookshelf the Special Edition Director's Cut BluRay of "Two Girls, One Cup."
Humphrey Bogart and Claude Rains. The absolute best.
I challenge that. Watch Double Indemnity Fred MacMurray and Edward G. Robinson are an even more engaging couple, and the other couple in the film, Barbara Stanwick and Fred MacMurray, are definitely second best, and intentionally so. In fact, the whole movie isn't so much a story of murder and its consequences (reckoning, anyone?) but a morality tale about love. Keyes loves Neff. Neff loves Keyes. Keyes wants Neff to join him in a life of underpaid devotion to Truth. Neff jilts Keyes for a temptress in a dressed only in a towel, who leads him into a life of riches and lies which immediately goes sour.
A thousand thundering thrills await me Facing insurmountable odds gratefully The female of the species is more deadly than the male
Shock shock horror horror Shock shock horror I'll shout myself hoarse for your supernatural force The female of the species is more deadly than the male
Oh she deals in witchcraft And one kiss and I'm zapped Oh how can heaven hold a place for me When a girl like you has cast a spell on me Oh how can heaven hold a place for me When a girl like you has cast a spell on me
Frankenstein and Dracula have nothing on you Jekyll and Hyde join the back of the queue The female of the species is more deadly than the male Oh she wants to conquer the world completely But first she'll conquer me discreetly
The female of the species is more deadly than the male
Matt Lauer: I found something hard wrapped in cloth. I unwrapped it, saw it was my penis and that's when it went off, hitting the woman who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Statistics show that unintended discharge has been an inherent problem with the penis for a long time.
Why are these open secrets (Weinstein and Lauer) being brought to light at this point in time?
There was a War on Women being waged by the Republicans on the fairer sex in this hellhole America, said the Democrats and their masters the Media. Along came Trump caught on tape saying "they let you" do that when you are a star. The Media was outraged to hear such talk! The Donald said, "But your nominee covered up for a guy who DID those things!" The public sided with Trump by voting him into office. Pissed off feminists everywhere decided they must be believed, men must pay for their sins! This unfocused and white hot anger sought another outlet, only slightly assuaged by the scalps of O'Reilly and Ailes. Ronan broke the dam. The flood of accusers and target rich environment hit the industry known for having a "casting couch" first, but soon ricocheted back into the media-info-tainment industry. Their hope is still to direct this Wreckoning Ball at the Great Orange POTUS, but no one is steering this movement: it comes from the hearts of those aggrieved (unfortunately for Democrats) by Progressives in Positions of Power, and the victims and perps are almost all Liberals of All The Right Beliefs.
That is how we came to this point in the Wreckoning.
I love those pictures Drudge has been posting. Especially the Currie-Couric kiss over a smiling and self satisfied Laur's lap, as he leaned back, hands behind his head.
Claude Rains was great in everything, including The Wolfman (That's the studio system for ya. Good actors must have hated appearing in bad movies, but the system helped ensure that even turkeys could fly, or a least walk with some dignity.)
No movie has ever had a more charismatic couple than "Casablanca" — Humphrey Bogart and Claude Rains. The absolute best.
I have a theory about why that movie ended the way it did. Bogart, having to choose a settled down, domestic life with Bergman or an adventure with his buddy Rains, chose the latter. He executed it in such a way as to cushion the blow to Bergman and make himself look like a altruistic good guy.
Does anyone know why all references to NBC/Lauer scandal have been removed from Drudge? Drudge has completely wiped his page of anything to do with Lauer. I realize these scandals evaporate pretty quickly, but I can't believe something of this magnitude has run its course already. Disappointing. I figured they'd keep it going a little longer.
Casablanca? I saw Ilsa Lund using Rick Blaine to get her Commie husband, Victor Laszlo, to safety. Victor was more interested in helping the Soviet Union secure power in France than helping the Allies--as were all members of the "Resistance." They had welcomed the Nazis with open arms during the invasion and ratted on their fellow citizens, getting many killed and tortured by the Gestapo. Ilsa never intended to be with Rick, he was just a sucker to remain behind and take the fall. I started hoping for the plane to explode in the air on subsequent viewings.
Claude Rains was wonderful in every film he made. And I like that he had a hobby farm in Pennsylvania for a while, although I find it difficult to imagine Rains milking cows and gathering eggs from the hen house.
I read a very interesting book about the making of "Casablanca" once. It's amazing how haphazardly the film was thrown together. They rewrote it as the filming was going on and the ending kept changing. The actors had absolutely no sense of where the plot was going and sort of winged their roles. None of them thought the film would be a classic (it was not a huge blockbuster at the time)and Bergman was far more interested in the role she was slated to play next, which she thought would catapult her into the front ranks of stardom. "Casablanca" was just this little nothing she did to fill the time before starring in The Really Important Film (which nobody remembers.)
I can't remember the name of the book but it was a fun read. I was especially interested in the careers and fates of the minor characters, many of whom were European refugees playing European refugees.
“Rep. Blake Farenthold used taxpayer money to settle a sexual harassment claim brought by his former spokesman — the only known sitting member of Congress to have used a little-known congressional account to pay an accuser, people familiar with the matter told POLITICO.
Lauren Greene, the Texas Republican’s former communications director, sued her boss in December 2014 over allegations of gender discrimination, sexual harassment and creating a hostile work environment.
Greene said another Farenthold aide told her the lawmaker said he had “sexual fantasies” and “wet dreams” about Greene. She also claimed that Farenthold “regularly drank to excess” and told her in February 2014 that he was “estranged from his wife and had not had sex with her in years.”
When she complained about comments Farenthold and a male staffer made to her, Greene said the congressman improperly fired her. She filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in the District of Columbia, but the case was later dropped after both parties reached a private settlement.”

The wife is always the last to know.
"I think the expression is "shocked, shocked."
Maybe that means her husband gave her the Shocker.
Kind of seems like something he would do, given recent events.
Although he might have just given the Shocker to women in his locked office.
It is difficult for a woman to get away from the Shocker in a locked office.

She’s shocked but she’s not shocked, shocked.
College's should make it mandatory for all incoming freshman to watch 'Casablanca'.

When it is Al Roker's time for the accusations he can use the excuse that the events happened back when he was fat.
Matt Lauer should have used the 'losing my hair' excuse: I was a celebrity going bald on national TV: mistakes were made."

Sometimes Althouse is the best commenter on her blog.
Which really doesn't seem fair.

I have seen Casablanca probably 100 times. Like "It's a Wonderful Life" it was a staple of black and white TV.
Why was she "ex-wife?"

That's not easy!

I wonder, if Matt Lauer experiences a significant drop in income, does his ex-wife also?

I wonder, if their father is exposed thus, do his children, as well as his wife, suffer social consequences?

"You have to say the word twice."
Like "Top. Men."
Requires two periods.
Give me that nonsensical object.
"You fool. You cowardly hysterical fool."
That could be Al Franken talking.

Claude Rains is great in "Notorious".

Claude Rains and Vivien Leigh meet cute in Caesar and Cleopatra(1945). But he never gets the girl.
Caesar didn't want the girl after he discovered how vicious she was.
She and Lauer have been divorced since 1988 for Pete's sake.

"A man who tells lies, like me, merely hides the truth. But a man who tells half-lies, has forgotten where he's put it."
Robert Bolt's line delivered perfectly by Claude Rains
I should probably be deleted for this, but I have a particular commenter in mind who fits the latter half of the line.
That is how we came to this point in the Reckoning.
So....it's a Trump-nado!!
My suspicion is that none of this would have happened with Hillary in the White House.

Third best. I like the Sam-Rick relationship. Much more of humanity revealed in that.
To be clear, I agree on Rick-Louie as best.
I dunno. Maybe this is a gender-flipped Hephaestus/Aphrodite like relationship. He's banging everything except her. "Sex? No, we're Lauers."

Yes, and the feminists have some common-sense solutions to that problem they would like to enact into law.

Hahahaha, I called it several days ago when I said it was probably Farenthold on the Republican side! Where is Drago?
https://www.politico.com/story/2017/12/01/blake-farenthold-taxpayer-funds-sexual-harassment-274458

It's all taxpayer money, Inga. The other payouts have just come from other taxpayer-funded accounts.
