Carl Bernstein unwittingly reveals that he believes Trump is innocent of whatever it is that Mueller is investigating.

I was stunned by this amazing slip this morning on CNN's "State of the Union." The moderator Dana Bash had this question:WOODWARD: You have to look at the crimes.
[T]he investigation has been going on for over a year, at least in the Justice Department, the FBI. We still don't know about any evidence that the president knowingly colluded with Russia. Does that give the president's claim that this is a witch-hunt some credence?
Bernstein's answer:
He believes it's a witch-hunt. There's no question he believes it's a witch-hunt.
What?! The only way that Bernstein can make those assertions about what Trump believes is if Bernstein is sure Trump is not lying. Trump knows what he did with respect to Russia, but he's saying it's a witch-hunt. Trump's saying that it's a witch-hunt could happen if: 1. He knows there's nothing there (i.e., Mueller is searching for for something, like a witch, that doesn't exist), or 2. He's worried about something that he did and he wants to hide it. Bernstein's remark excludes #2. But Bernstein doesn't have access to the inside of Trump's head, so why did Bernstein say that? I'd say Bernstein, on his own, knows that there's nothing there, and he blurted out an answer without thinking about what he was saying about what's in his own head.

I know: It's also possible that Bernstein is a careless bullshitter.

ADDED: Here's how the CNN website covers the same appearance I am writing about: "Bernstein: Trump's lawyers tell him what he wants to hear on Russia." CNN's writers tell audience what they want to hear about Trump.

How could Carl Bernstein be a careless bullshitter? He’s a hero of Watergate! He was played by Dustin Hoffman, for Pete’s sake! Oh.

Bernstein and pretty much everyone else in D.C. knows there is nothing there as far as actual collusion between the Trump Campaign and the Russian government. Not a single piece of evidence demonstrating such a conspiracy has been published anywhere- not a single piece in over 18 months. Like a lot of men his age and a lot of people who don't have IQs above body temperature, Bernstein isn't able to keep his arguments consistent with the lie of the Russian narrative. So, yes, it was a telling slip of the tongue on his part.

He was a fair stenographer for Mark Felt in 1974. I believe that is his most recent accomplishment.

I have watched Bernstein over the years have marveled at his staying power. He has the charisma of a guard rail. A absolute dud. I am thinking Woodward was the brains behind the Watergate expose. His recent blathering(s) do nothing to dispel my opinion.

rehajm said...

I’m with walter. I think he knows there’s nothing there and within that context isn’t certain what the best answer is give given the outcome he wants. He didn’t have to deal with this shit the last time he helped impeach an unpopular President.

I think Bernstein was trying to imply that Trump is too stupid to know he's guilty. Since everyone who is smart thinks Trump is guilty, and everyone who is smart thinks Trump is dumb, it must be that Trump stupidly believes that he's innocent.

Of course this makes no sense, but neither does spending a year investigating and coming up with nothing. The only alternative would be that the smart smug elites are wrong, and we can't have that happen (again).

Bernstein is a careless bullshitter. He's also a red diaper baby. Woodward, in contrast, was a Navy Officer attached to the NSA, and has right wing tendencies.

Sadly, I won't be around to read what historians one hundred years hence have to say about the communal insanity that was "Campaign collusion/Russian interference in the 2016 election", but I imagine it's going to be a hoot.

And if you think that there's got there's got to be some fire where's this much smoke, let me remind you of PlameGate, where the NYT forged a rod for their own backs, demanding a special prosecutor who promptly threw one of their own reporters in jail for not revealing sources. Finally, when the source outed himself (Richard Armitage), it failed to feed the narrative that Left wanted to use to oust Cheney, so it was all quickly forgotten. The NYT never apologized for the damage they wrought on the freedom of the press, & they fired their reporter who had the courage to defend her source at the cost of her own freedom.

David said...

I view Bernstein as a reasonably careful bullshitter. I think that makes your point stronger.

This is like when Trump said about Putin: "He said he didn't meddle. I asked him again. You can only ask so many times. Every time he sees me, he says, 'I didn't do that.' And I believe, I really believe, that when he tells me that, he means it."

That does not eliminate the possibility that Trump believes Putin was aware of "informational programs" that Putin subjectively would not call meddling, particularly when compared to a whole host of U.S. "information programs" designed to promote democracy around the world. At the time, I said "Putin may view his country's information programs in a similar way: getting his government's word out but not 'meddling' in elections."

Likewise, Bernstein could argue that subjectively Trump believes it's a witch-hunt whether or not Trump is aware of his guilt or, as Hari said, "Bernstein was trying to imply that Trump is too stupid to know he's guilty."

After seeing how our legal system allows some to simply ignore the law over the last 8 years, I have to believe that anything is possible including a charge, a final determination, or an exoneration based on nothing at all. There is simply no connection between facts, the written law and outcomes by from our legal system. It's a complete crap shoot. The IRS scandal, illegal executive orders, and Comey listing Hillary's clear violations of the law only to then ignore them can give you no confidence in any of it. Our legal system at the top is total bullshit. I'd be ashamed to be a part of it. As an American, I am ashamed.

The new story from the New York Times seems still to rely on coincidence, but is not obviously wrong. I am not sure about the part about the Russians “exfiltrating emails” from the DNC for months, and being the ones to release them, since from the timeline provided by CrowdStrike, the Russians had been kicked out prior to the most damaging emails even being written, much less hacked. It still boils down to the DNC leak being a hack by the Russians, which doesn’t seem to be supported by the known evidence, which points to leak.

It seems like motivated reasoning to me on the part of the New York Times. Deliberately mixing up the facts to construct a scary sounding narrative. Of course, the Hillary and the DNC also could have made the job of undermining them harder by, well, you know, acting above board. And maybe the press could have not have acted as DNC operatives and worked so hard to gain the favor and approval of Hillary and the Democrats.

In the Watergate affair, the Deep Throat leaker who strove to remove the US President from his office was FBI Associate Director Mark Felt.

In the RussiaGate affair, the leaker is Special Counsel Robert "The FBI Whitewasher" Mueller.

When Mueller was FBI Director, the FBI leaked that the anthrax poisoner was Steven Hatfill. The FBI leaked for two reasons:

1) To assure that public that the FBI was making progress in its investigation.

2) To spook Hatfill into confessing or into trying to flee.

The preeminent recipient of the leaks was New York Times reporter Nicholas Kristoff.

Kristoff is begging publicly that US Government officials (e.g. Mueller) leak to him President Trump's tax documents.

Mueller still does not have Trump's tax documents, but the only thing Mueller has been investigating during the past year is how to get Trump's tax documents so that Mueller can leak them to his old leak collaborator Kristoff.

In the meantime, Mueller is directing his gang of Trump-hating lawyers to leak systematically any and every tidbit of information that might cast suspicion on President Trump. Whenever Mueller's Trump-hating lawyers get any such tidbit, they leak it immediately to Trump-hating journalists.

Since no information indicating any Russian collusion has been leaked by Mueller's gang yet, the public can be confident that there is absolutely no information indicating collusion.

When the top FBI officials wanted to remove Martin Luther King from the leadership of the Civil Rights Movement, they claimed that Russia was meddling the Movement and therefore the FBI had to wiretap King and his associates.

By wiretapping King, the FBI found evidence that King was committing adultery. The FBI leaked that information to King-hating journalists.

The FBI official managing the wiretapping and leaking was William Sullivan, the head of the FBI's intelligence operations.

The FBI recently has been up to the same old tricks -- using "Russian meddling" as an excuse to wiretap a prominent US person -- in this case, Donald Trump -- in order to leak dirt about him to journalists order to remove him from his position.

Rod Rosenstein appointed Robert Mueller to the Special Counsel position because Mueller is, in the entire world, the one person who is very most motivated and able to whitewash the FBI.

When Rosenstein appointed Mueller, both of them already were well informed that the FBI had used Christopher Steele's dossier -- funded by Hillary Clinton's campaign -- as a bogus justification to wiretap the Trump campaign.

Mueller is investigating only one problem -- how to get Trump's tax documents so that he can leak them to his old leak-collaborator Nicholas Kristoff, who has been begging publicly that they be leaked to him.

This investigation is going to be just like the election, just like the celebrity fueled "Resistance." At the start it seems certain Trump cannot prevail. At the finish Trump prevails, exposing in the process Hillary's corruption, Weinstein's corruption and finally, Mueller's corruption. And all the tangled links between politics, celebrity and the law. The poor job done by the media on all three occasions is undoing that group as we watch. CNN and the hunt for The Great White Truck while Iran burns - pathetic. And I think in some underground way the tax bill has made some who have been in a coma since the election wake-up. They just see - we were wrong about Trump. Bernstein is in that group of sleepers awakening. Rip van Winkles astounded by the world about them.
So changed in one year. So much winning - what a great year 2017 has been. But I haven't had too much winning, Mr. President. Sail on, sailor.

There is a witch hunt (public), and a baby hunt (private). We're well into the fourth trimester after inauguration, and several multiples since conception. Even leftists and Pro-Choice Republicans who deemed Trump unworthy, inconvenient, and nonviable, must acknowledge that it's indecent to abort him NOW, and their Planned coup is intolerable.

That said, now it's time to investigate Water Closet exposed by Deep Plunger, where Obama spied on Americans and the Republican candidate, and Clinton colluded with foreign and domestic intelligence assets, including the sovereign in Kiev, and the DNC-affiliated Press carried out witch hunts and public lynchings, in order to influence American elections, violate civil rights, and to promote the minority Welfare of the Democrat Party.

Robert "The FBI Whitewasher" Mueller is determined to drag his bogus, disgraceful "investigation" out until at least November 2018. Mueller hopes that in the November election the Democrats will win a majority in the House of Representatives.

As long as Mueller continues his "investigation", the top officials of the FBI and Justice Department will be able to use Mueller's "investigation" as an excuse to refuse to provide any information about their wiretapping of Trump's campaign staff.

Mueller and his gang of Trump-hating lawyers are investigating only one problem -- how to get Trump's tax documents. If they get the documents on a Tuesday, they will leak all of them by the end of business on Wednesday.

NYT reporter Nicholas Kristoff already is begging for that leak. Kristoff and Mueller already have collaborated in leaks in past years.

Such heroic linguistic vandalism hasn't been seen since Bill Clinton parsed the meaning of the word, "is."

Bernstein can believe that Trump is certain it's a witchhunt without thinking Trump is innocent because:

1. Being subjected to a witch-hunt doesn't mean you're legally innocent of all charges that could result from said witch hunt.
2. Trump is delusional and has a persecution complex that's quite detached from any objective self-assessment of whatever right or wrong he has done.
3. Trump is known to think that he is above the law anyway. (Just like Nixon did).

This blog is becoming the dead-ender go-to place for the New Nixonians. These acrobatics of legalese are steadily becoming physiologically warped contortions.

Mueller is a prosecution in search of a crime. And failing that, a prosecution regardless. In addition, after having been appointed by dictate -- whereas even the lowest U.S. attorney requires Senate confirmation -- he is accountable to no one, thereby holding powers that exceed the President, exceed the Congress, exceed the Chief Justice and associate justices of the Supreme Court.

And that is a far greater danger to the republic, infinitely more dangerous, than any inadequacies that Trump might have.

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

There is a slow motion coup d'etat going on which will probably fail unlike with Nixon.

A coup d'état involves violence, numbnuts. Something that Trump has openly expressed a fondness for that his many opponents have not. Finally, you have some nerve calling a coup d'etat the will of a majority of the voting public that has only steadily grown ever since Mr Minority Opinion decided that governing against their wishes and against any outreach was how he wanted to do things.

The damage it inflicts on the nation is of no concern to the left who have no idea how to run an organization anyway,

The nation isn't a dictatorship and the health of the nation improved significantly after the lawless paranoid Nixon was made to resign. If he didn't want to he shouldn't have broken the law. And neither should his protege, Trump. If you want to run an "organization" then I heard there's a nice contraband substances ring that the two of you could run from within the walls of the local prison. Organization! Good grief. You mean, like la cosa nostra? That kind of "organization?" Like organized crime?

Let's not omit that in the Plame Affair, it was known from the very beginning by Fitzgerald, after his appointment by the very same Comey, that there was no crime. The "investigation" was deemed a prosecution and they were damn well going to prosecute. It should have all been shut down on the first day, but instead Fitzgerald engaged in pretext and shadows to fraudulently subpoena records, subject them to FBI interrogation, and drag people before the grand jury until he was able to find a pound of flesh to prosecute.

Trump should do what George W. thought politically impossible and pardon Scooter Libby.

You watch way too much FOX News - a poor substitute for failing high school civics. Trump could fire the attorney general who oversees the man who appointed Mueller, and seek a replacement who could fire him and end the appointment. But he would be impeached the next day. The investigation is duly legal and proper. If Trump has nothing to fear then he should shut up and let it proceed. But he's not and kicked his own ass by taking the advice of his equally stupid son-in-law and firing the FBI director for not swearing personal loyalty to him over and above the constitution - which is illegal.

Trump is quickly finding out that all the legal shenanigans he played to use better funded attorneys to bully his business associates while in real estate won't work any more now that he wants to use the powers of the state to lie, cover up, and devote its officers to him instead of to the Constitution.

Look at the housing codes if you live in a city. Lots of laws you can break if you modify your house without lots of paperwork.

Never mind the "air gap" between those machines and the Internet. And never mind that the left leaning 538 blog showed statistically it didn't happen. Despite its physical and statistical impossibility it is assumed as an article of faith to have happened. Similarly,in ended up in the comment section today over at TNR, and was quite surprised that they knew when the Russian had hacked Crooked Hillary's email server, they also knew the approximate date that the contents were offered to the Trump campaign by the Russians. An established, incontrovertible, fact that has eluded Congress and the DoJ. The cognitive dissonance runs deep with this crowd.

After Whitewater and the Birther canard, I would say that Trump is set up to be hoist on the Republicans' petard. That said, I tend to agree with the notion that Mr. Trump may not know or understand his own guilt here. Deniability usually refers to a false-front; however it could be the case that the sort of not-knowing involved here --given Mr. Trump's personality-- might be such that his people would not even tell him about stuff that happened.

Actually, I think he really does believe that Russians hacked election machines all over WI, MI and PA. HIs inability to cite any source for this fact that "everyone knows" is interesting. But what he is parroting of course, is the stream of headlines in MSM in the early months of 2017 stating "Russians Hacked The Election." The fact that not a single one of the stories under those headlines offered any evidence for the "hacking" of election machines by Russian agents doesn't matter a whit to the Toothless One.

In the election Hillary colluded with the Obama Admin, the media to get the candidate she wanted to run against, Donald Trump. With all of Obama and the media help and spending over a billion $ she couldn't beat Trump, her preferred opponent. The Democrats would have us believe that $10,000 of shitty confusing Russian Facebook ads made the difference.

Truth is Russian nationals could volunteer to work on the Trump campaign legally, just like illegals work on Democrat campaigns. Foreign nationals can't legally vote or donate money, but they can volunteer.

If Putin bought Trump he got screwed, because so far Trump policies are costing Putin dearly.

Not that most thinking people don't know this already, but there is the question of what "collusion" actually means? To say nothing of whether it would be a crime?

Worst case scenario: Trump let it be known (promised) that he would not push the Crimea issue if Russia would release the embarassing emails it had purloined from the Hillary campaign. Except that it was already pretty clear that Trump did not regard Crimea as an insurmountable obstacle to good future relations (Obama and EU "asked for it" by recklessly enticing Ukraine to join the EU with possible NATO membership eventually) in light of the much greater shared interest between US and Russia in Syria and need for cooperation over nuclear proliferation with regard to North Korea and Iran. Putin pretty much knew this without any promises so would naturally have favored Trump in any case, as would any head of state in a similar situation.

And this is supposing that Russia, not Israel (say), or an insider in the Clinton campaign leaked the information to Wikipedia about Hillary's speech to Goldman Sachs regarding her real beliefs on free trade and immigration, which were the only damaging information released, and which the American electorate had a legitimate need to know in any case.

One need not even bother with the vague charge that Russia "interfered" in the US election in ways that did not include hacking the actual vote tallies, which no one is alleging, and which do not involve Trump in any case. Propaganda is something that all states do.

Bernstein's answer: He believes it's a witch-hunt. There's no question he believes it's a witch-hunt.

Perhaps Trump's strange behavior is taking on a pattern that might lead to conclusions of deepening dementia. After-the-fact studies of Ronald Reagan's public appearances after his Alzheimer's disease was acknowledged revealed changes in his speech patterns and repetitive statements.

Interestingly, Ronaldus Magnus was the same age as Mini-Me Trump (69) when they were elected POTUS. Reagan was very much concerned with senility because his mother Nellie was senile for several years before her death at age 80. Likewise, Trump's father, Fred Sr., died of Alzheimers - but Donald is not bringing up that subject.

In 1994, researchers found changes in the speaking patterns of in Mr. Reagan’s speech, two measures — use of repetitive words, and substituting nonspecific terms like “thing” for specific nouns — increased toward the end of Mr. Reagan’s presidency, compared with its start. A third measure, his use of unique words, declined.

In 1984, Mr. Reagan’s poor performance in his first presidential debate with Vice President Walter Mondale renewed questions about his mental capacity. A study published in 1988 suggested that Mr. Reagan had some cognitive impairment during his debates with President Jimmy Carter and Mr. Mondale, but the authors said that their findings were insufficient to conclude that the changes affected Mr. Reagan’s policy judgments and ability to make decisions.

The same technique used for Reagan in which researchers assessed changes in the president's speech patterns with a new algorithm based on a technique used by others to analyze changes in writing by novelists. So 28 years after the Reagan study, the refinement of this technique is likely to have occurred in order to better predict and treat dementia.

Why not gather the recordings of Donald Trump in order to assess Donald's speech pattern changes. We know that his vocabulary is presently limited, that he often repeats himself and he forgets when today's lie contradicts yesterday's statements. Recently he became unsure that it was he speaking nasty words on the Access Hollywood tape, but he had already admitted this fact months ago. Recordings of his stream-of-consciousness campaign speeches are out there to listen to, filled with nonsense words, making no sense.

How about: “You know what uranium is, right? It's this thing called nuclear weapons and other things. Like, lots of things are done with uranium, including some bad things. Nobody talks about that. I didn't do anything for Russia. I've done nothing for Russia.”

This blog is becoming the dead-ender go-to place for the New Nixonians. These acrobatics of legalese are steadily becoming physiologically warped contortions.

So what law do you think Trump broke?

I know you don't have an answer. The DNC "hack" was an inside job and Podesta clicked on a phis mail a 9th grader could code up. Hillary and the DNC took hundreds of millions from Russia. There is obvious criminal collusion, but it is all on the democrat side.

It has been pointed many times that the left really doesn't care about the actual law. It is about power. The democrat party and the left hate the rule of law.

Supporting this coup at this point is really just announcing yourself as an enemy of due process and lawful elections. The left always supports democracy and elections until it costs them power.

So far, no evidence has been produced showing collusion between Trump and Russia. The most obvious explanation for the allegations—Hillary Clinton’s blameshifting for her loss to Trump in the election—will never be accepted by those who have already accepted it. However, even if Trump had colluded with the Russians, he could still believe the investigation into it was a witch hunt. People do have the capacity to believe they’re being treated unfairly when they’re called on things they are guilty of. People justify their actions to themselves, even sometimes egregious actions. Trump, an obvious narcissist, is surely one of these people, fat with feelings of self-entitlement and unable to feel guilt.

Robert Cook said...

I mean—above—that Trump probably did not collide with Russia will never be accepted by those who have accepted as true that he did. They will never accept the Clinton’s groundless blameshifting is simply that and nothing more.

Robert Cook said...

At the same time, Trump supporters will never accept as true any evidence that is produced that Trump has committed crimes, whether it be collusion with the Russians or any other crimes. Trump has already cannily indoctrinated his base with the conviction that any news one dislikes must be fake news. (This is not to dispute that some portion of what is presented as news is propaganda, i.e., fake news.)

Rather obvious alternative to Althouse's possibilities: Bernstein can believe that Trump believes he did nothing wrong, and therefore is the victim of a witch-hunt, without agreeing with him. Trump regularly asserts things that are demonstrably untrue, in some cases even after it's been pointed out to him that they're untrue; it's reasonable to think that he believes at least some of those things, but that doesn't make them true. Bernstein was probably referring to Trump's increasingly apparent inability to distinguish between fact and his grandiose delusions.

Bruce Hayden said...

The comments by Robert Cook, one of our long term leftists here, are why I have defended him here on multiple occasions. While still quite a bit to the left, and knee jerk on some topics, he is thoughtful and most ofen honest, though, in my estimation, misguided. A welcome contrast with Ritmo and the Crazy Cat Lady (Inga).

I do disagree, I think though, with his claim that Trump has indoctrinated his base to the extent that they would excuse criminal behavior on his part (as the Dems have done with Obama, and, in particular, with Crooked Hillary). I think that Roy Moore's loss is some evidence that Republicans are less accepting of immoral or illegal behavior than are their Democratic brethren. Maybe, because Trump really is a master persuader, and Cook could be right here.

Bruce Hayden said...

Voting machines could theoretically be hacked. They weren't, because they are secured after being used for voting and have been tested to verify that they weren't hacked. Besides, hacking the election would have required hacking of multiple different types of voting and voting machines, which would have been statistically noticeable. And, yes, the "air gap" would have required that the hacking be hands on, and not done remotely from Russia.

Trump has indoctrinated his base to the extent that they would excuse criminal behavior on his part

This all comes back to the fact that people have woken up to the realization that these are not binary situations. Excusing or condemning Trump for a given behavior is not all that is play as if it all happens in a vacuum. The greater question is -- to what end? to what result or consequence overall? what is the alternative?

People are now woke that you get rid of Trump, then what you get is the militant left, who are FAR WORSE than any criminality that Trump could think up.

Mark said...

It's not a matter of being pro-Trump, it's a matter of realizing the vastly greater danger of the left.

No, if you you get rid of Trump, you get Mike Pence.

BTW, what "militant left" exists in out government?

That's a trick question, as the answer is: None.
