The finger in the news.

1. "A Virginia cyclist who was photographed extending her middle finger at President Trump’s motorcade as it drove past her last month has lost her job because of the gesture, [Juli Briskman, 50,] said on Monday," reports the NYT. "'We have chosen to separate from you,' she quoted one of them as saying to her, citing the company’s social media policy ban on 'obscene content.' She said she was told that she was not meeting the company’s code of conduct and that the officials feared 'it could hurt business' because of their work related to government contracts."

2. "After former Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and Mcebisi Jonas got the boot, Gubb began trading Gupta-owned Oakbay shares in order to create, in the price chart, a work of art depicting a middle finger. It all took off when Gordhan called on the country’s citizens to mobilise and join the dots. Gubb did his bit in the form of what is almost certainly first piece of protest art on a financial media platform in the world. To create his art, Gubb traded Gupta-owned Oakbay shares." Reports The South African, via Bloomberg, "This Artist Is Giving the Finger to the Stock Market/Should a man of the information age be punished for creating pure magic?"

The cyclist is making a mistake in turning in the company. That's bridge-burning.

Her next boss wants to know what she'll be saying about him and that's not a good sign.

I'm not celebrating her firing. Getting fired sucks.

If a cyclist flipped off the Obama motorcade, the media reaction would be the opposite. The media would highlight the racism of the flip-off. (or just ignore the whole thing, because really - who cares?)

In this instance, the media promoted her and that promotion is what ended her career. Sometimes the hack-D press hurts more than it helps.

ARM hs no doubt forgotten the woman who lost her job while she was on an airplane and didn't know it until it landed.

InterActive Corp, Sacco's employer, issued a statement to ABC News this afternoon distancing itself from the tweet and saying the employee was fired.

"There is no excuse for the hateful statements that have been made and we condemn them unequivocally," the InterActive Corp statement said. "We hope, however, that time and action, and the forgiving human spirit, will not result in the wholesale condemnation of an individual who we have otherwise known to be a decent person at core."

The controversy erupted while Sacco was reportedly mid-flight with no Internet access.

A trending hashtag #HasJustineLandedYet and parody account @LOLJustineSacco quickly appeared on Twitter. A fake Facebook account under her name was also created, where a post links to www.justinesacco.com, which brings up a donation page for Aid for Africa.

Of course, she was not "Woke."

No one said free speech was without consequences.

Isn't it strange that I do not recall anyone doing these asinine public displays of #resist when Obama was in office even though he routinely overstepped his presidential authority.

For the more liberal among us, the Tea Party events were not even close to the mayhem from the currently unhinged progressives between #Antifa(1stA), #resist, public scream at the sky days, etc. Those that did overstep where nearly (if not actually) universally outed as liberal plants.

Also, despite all of the anger and worry and angst, not one of these people that are part of all of these groups/events can name a single, actual, illegal thing that Trump has done. They can point out plenty that they don't agree with and plenty that they don't like and plenty of "general feelings of unrest" but nothing he has actually "done" as President that is illegal or that exceeds his power (unlike Obama).

Right, completely ignore the fact that the company she worked for was a government contractor and she insulted their single customer with a public display of vulgarity. The media didn't help by making a big deal of it but if she would have shown even half of the maturity of her physical years she would have giving maybe 2 seconds of thought to the possible consequences of her emotionally driven action.

As to your other comment, you mean like a rodeo clown that did the same "stunt" to every President but got fired for wearing an Obama mask? Like that? Other than his was not a malicious insult directed at the man.

The company I work for (a large, US based one) mandates that I take an on-line "Preventing Workplace Harassment" training course every two years. I get a reminder email about 30 days in advance and should I miss the deadline my immediate manager is copied on a reminder and I'm threatened with having a demerit or some such added to my Permanent File if I don't comply immediately.

Anyway, I had to redo the course earlier this week and sure enough there is a section on social media behavior and activity. I learned that it is my company's policy that anything I do on social media can be a cause for disciplining me up to and including termination of my employment. This is also documented in the Company Code of Conduct and Employee Manual.

Todd,

Well, I was more thinking a general argument against shooting someone the finger while on a bike, rather than a specific, Trump-based, argument.

Thinking of all the possible outcomes of biking along a motorway, then taking your eyes off the road and one hand off the handlebars to make a obscene gesture, which may be interpreted in a number of different ways by a number of different observers, many of whom might not be your intended recipient of the gesture, while you are wrapped around a flimsy metal framework balanced on two wheels, while surrounded by a plethora of hard and abrasive surfaces, whizzing by at high speeds and close distances, some of them attached to heavy vehicles piloted by drivers whose efficacy in keeping said vehicles away from you is not helped by being distracted by that obscene gesture, and who are strangers whose mental state and level of impulse control is suspect at best...

Well, of the vast majority of outcomes I can think of, none are favorable, and a large percentage of them are decidedly unfavorable. Your mileage may vary of course, but with my limited imagination, I am unable to come up with any happy endings to that scenario.

And that is independent of political climate.

Indeed, I might think that, in the spirit of human compassion and kindness, we might all -- left, right and center -- celebrate that the only outcome of this woman's behavior was the loss of employment.

I would not be surprised that the amount of time she remains unemployed is less than the amount of time it would take to heal a case of road rash -- one of the less unpleasant possible outcomes when shooting someone the finger from a moving bicycle on a public motorway.

I don't doubt that. The reality is that an actual businessman would view the situation and come to the not unrealistic conclusion that a person of 50 years of age that pulled a "stunt" like this and followed up in the way she has is not a very good long term investment and would "take a knee" on the privilege of hiring her.

Another person that was maybe responsible for a business but upon review of the situation comes to a different conclusion. That being that this individual "sure showed that fascist Trump what for" and decide to help this woman out by giving her a job, not realizing that a person of her age, acting out in such a manner is a likely candidate for doing such foolishness again, bringing an unexpected spotlight on to this person's business along with some unexpected publicity.

No need to ban bikes, but perhaps add a few common-sense safety features for consumer safety.

1) A steel frame around the bicyclist, complete with crash crumple zones.
2) Directional signals, on some sort of control attached to the steering device, so that the bicyclist need not remove their hands to indicate turns.
3) While we are at it, a steering wheel instead of handlebars
4) And on the subject of wheels...Two wheels is an unstable configuration, especially when not moving. Add another two wheels -- a four-wheel bicycle
5) Enclose that steel frame surrounding the bicyclist, to protect them from weather. Use a windshield and windows to provide visibility
6) Extend the seat, and provide seatbelts, head restraint and so on
7) This will all add significant weight, so an auxillary power source -- electric or even better, an internal combustion engine, to help propel the (four-wheeled) bicycle.

I think we can all agree that these are reasonable additions that will increase bicycle safety.
