Little things that don't play anymore: Al Franken says he's "a little disappointed" that Chelsea Handler's blouse is not a pajama top.

From last June:

Everything seems so wrong in retrospect.

I don't think he should resign. He is far too valuable to Republicans. I kid, I kid. I don't have any opinions on what they should do in Frostbite Falls. He is their Senator, stole his seat fair and square.

You do realize that this is the wages of your nostalgie de la boue. Why is it so hard to understand that people acting shitty, aren't acting?

If their talents are essential - say Mike Tyson - that's a man you keep in a cage and throw him raw meat and let him out to box. You don't go up to his hotel room and think that you're in control of the situation.

Likewise if some jokester is so mission-critical, weapons-grade funny that he is indispensable, you may have to tolerate the fact that he leaves a trail of slime, but you don't have to accept it, you don't need to hold him to your bosom, let alone elect him to power!

Yes, Althouse, this is in some part YOUR fault, you and everyone who lauds creeps.

Come on its Chelsea Handler. She posts topless photos of herself all the time, has walked through San Francisco topless as part of her free the nipple campaign and often appears nude in public. I thought context was important. Handler loves her breasts and loves showing them and has made it a big part of her public persona. She's done nude shower scenes with both Conan and Ellen. Its not like this was Leslie Stahl.

tcrosse said...

Even as a former-constituent, I don't think he should resign. Better he should stay on, being considerably weakened. He has been shorn of his Moral Superiority.

Are we going to have one standard for Chelsea Handler and another for the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary?

Kevin said...

People have been pointing out the wrongness of the morality-preaching Dems for quite some time.

It’s not suddenly news to the other half of the country.

buwaya said...

There already is a different standard for such people.
Chelsea Handler (I dont really know who that is, never seen her perform in whatever it is she is known for; she seems to be yet another professional beauty) can do all sorts of embarrassing and foolish things, and get away with them, that a member of a Catholic religious order cannot.

rhhardin said...

It's still fake outrage. The entertainment phase is ongoing.

Someday men will be able to make sex jokes again without triggering the women's outrage-at-men receptor.

Women will have moved on to a new outrage.

I know. I am weak. I live in hope that Althouse will eschew this ephemera and discuss the critical issues of the day, such as this video.

Everything seems so wrong in retrospect.

So the TV show MASH was on the other day -- with Klinger being grossly offensive to trans-people, Hawkeye being a sexual predator, and everyone being pretentious moralistic bores.

"Everything seems so wrong in retrospect." In retrospect? Any true scotsman, or any other sensible person, listens to that guy for 30 seconds, and runs, fast and far.

But it's true, everything seems so wrong in retrospect, everything progs foisted on the polity and the culture for the past two generations.

JFK in the WH swimming pool seems so wrong in retrospect.

Chappaquiddick seems so wrong in retrospect.

Deriving a right to abortion from emanations of penumbrae seems so wrong in retrospect.

Bill and Juanita, Bill and Paula, Bill and Monica seems so wrong in retrospect.

Deriving SSM from substantive due process seems so wrong in retrospect.

Al Franken's jokes seem so wrong in retrospect.

The premise of feminism, that women are equal and autonomous agents, seems so wrong in retrospect.

O's promises, about anything and everything, seem so wrong in retrospect.

The swamp's not going after Hill hard, but unleashing Mueller on Trump, seems so wrong in retrospect.

I've found myself reminded of the Ellen Jamesians in "The World According to Garp".

What brilliant, prophetic satire that was.

grackle said...

Is this type of mildly flirtatious quip now forbidden? Or is the point that, after the other revelations of inappropriate touching, the remark seems prophetic? I hope it’s the latter.

buwaya said...

John Irving wrote Garp in the 1970s, and he did not have to be prophetic or stretch much to come up with the Ellen Jamesians.
Radical, separatist feminism was a very public thing even then. And it wasnt any less radical than it is now.

The only difference now is that in the 1970s it was a cult (or series of cults). These days it has institutions, funding and academic standing, besides being given, in most US universities, the right to preach at all undergraduates, who are mostly made to listen to them. The cult has turned into an official established religion.

There is a web browser plug in called KillFile that collapses trollious commenters.

Sadly, I've never been able to get it to work reliably in Chrome.

If I had, you'd be the first to go.

Poor ARM.

He and LLR Chuck and Inga have been less than successful changing the subject from Frankens behavior and the criminal behavior of legions of dems (including the now not surprising revelations at all about Conyers...who won't be leaving thank you very much) to the one story about a republican who is likely the victim of a crime.

The reasons are obvious.

BTW, isn't it adorable how the lefties and their LLR allies have now pretty much abandoned their fake calls for policing their own side from just a couple of weeks ago?

LOL

Precisely as predicted.

Weiner was forced to leave the House for the same behavior, albeit while in better shape and without the moving images and masturbation.

Ken B said...

It’s remarkable. Franke has been completely execrable as a senator: rude, unfair in questioning, bloviating, smug, sloppy with facts, uncollegial, nasty. But it’s a bad joke that makes Althouse rethink him.

sean said...

C'mon, sluttiness is a big part of Chelsea Handler's shtick. She starts the conversation off in a salacious vein, then women like Prof. Althouse complain when Chelsea's interlocutor joins in? What is Franken supposed to do with a comment like that, stare blankly and say, "I think of you only as a professional journalist, so I hadn't given a moment's thought to your clothes"? Why (other than hypocrisy) isn't Althouse denouncing women like Chelsea Handler, who blur the boundaries between professional and sexual and encourage men to see them (and all women) not as intellectual peers, but as sex toys?

Unfortunately, maybe so. But that's psychology for you. It's not like his jokes only appealed to butt-grabbers/gropers beforehand.

ARM: 'Weiner was forced to leave the House for the same behavior, albeit while in better shape and without the moving images and masturbation."
Such a sad little lie.

I can tell your heart must not really be in it today.

No wonder really given Frankens clear admission and astonishingly weak statement vomited up today along with the knowledge that John "i like to meet lobbyists in my actual office while only wearing underwear" Conyers also announced he isnt going anywhere.

Its no wonder you are trying so hard.

And we havent even begun to broach the dem/lefty institutions (industries/law firms/former intelligence agents) funded by lefties to enable this activity and then to atrack threaten and intimidate its victims.

Michelle Dulak Thomson said...

I swear, the first time I heard Chelsea Handler's name, I thought she was a sort of last line of defense for the Clintons' daughter.

So, that was ten seconds of a 9 minute, 41 second clip? The only ten seconds that now need to be re-thought?

I think this only clarifies the fact that sexual foibles are a tiny percentage of the amount of available character within which to judge someone's overall decency or lack thereof.

Come on. People who think inappropriate butt-grabbing is the end-all/be-all of maturity apparently need to grow up, themselves.

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

Multiple accounts of butt-grabbing is certainly not dignified. But didn't W. Bush snap multiple towels on the asses of guys in the locker room or something?

In fact… I once had a party at the Plaza Hotel… your father showed up uninvited & hit on my wife… invited her on his helicopter to Atlantic City.

She showed his fat ass the door.

Let’s give Drago some credit, he tries very hard every single day.

Inga...Allie Oop said...

And it’s interesting how Drago ignores Roy Moore and Trump himself, yet gets apoplectic over ass grabbing. I’d say that was Drago trying yo distract us from the worse sexual predators by far.

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

Clarence Page addressed the issue of whether he should step down. I think he shouldn't and won't, because it would do nothing to increase pressure on the "far worse" that Trump/Moore/whoever do/did to step down. Republicans don't lead by example. They don't lead, period. So Franken turned over his fate to the "toothless" Ethics Committee, and it will die there and hopefully with MN voters by the time the next four years are up. And then he can get on with being funny, but measured, and effective in the Senate. I repeat, there is a point to doing the "right" thing in the context of a society where the right thing matters. But the majority of our politicians are agency-bereft moral drones. Republicans are totally unethical, corrupt and brazen. No matter how bad they are, they won't change if Franken stepped down, so fuck 'em. Franken stays. If he were running again tomorrow the Republican Hatchet Squad might be able to put together an effective attack ad against him. But by four years from now they won't. So fuck them and fuck their party. Let them reckon with their own, many and much worse misdeeds first. Something of which those sociopaths are congenitally incapable.

glenn said...

Actually guys like Al tell you all you need to know about the ‘folks’ who voted for him. We uncaged the moral compass long ago.
