Trump speaks on the Las Vegas massacre.

ADDED: President Trump's speech was overwhelmingly about empathy toward the victims. He doesn't name the gunman, he calls it "an act of pure evil," and refers to the ongoing investigation before going on to praising the first responders and then concentrating onto the victims: "We cannot fathom their pain. We cannot imagine their loss."

At the 2 minute point, he turns to religion: "Scripture teaches us the Lord is close to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. We seek comfort in those words for we know that God lives in the hearts of those who grieve."

It is such a relief, when Trump gets through a reasonably well-written speech without any personal Trumpist embellishments. Even an ordinary speech that any president could have (and would have) delivered is a relief. No "very bad things," or "bigly," or "believe me."

After an hour of cable News gurus predicting Trump was a known divisive misspeak clown, so he better take their advice and speak right, the President spoke a perfect 10 of comforting speeches. Most pastors will be jealous of his skill level at doing their job. He hit the heart of the matter: that God is present with the suffering.

The poor cable news gurus now say he had an accident...or they give all credit to General Kelly living inside Trump.

Sympathy for a friend has some actual meaning. Sympathy for an unconnected stranger is self-entertainment.

If I say "Sorry about your father" that doesn't mean I'm sorry; it means I cut you some slack for a while. You don't have to laugh at the same jokes I've told for years. I'll understand if some social conventions are not enforced.

You have a use for that sympathy. It gives you room.

For an unconnected stranger, there's no use at all for your sympathy. It's you entertaining yourself.

The media bring every tragedy into your neighborhood; but it's only in your actual neighborhood that it matters, not the virtual neighborhood.

The feelings weep when they must, as when they need not. Analysis of the feelings does not weep. It possesses a latent sensibility which catches one off guard, prevails over miseries, teaches how to dispense with a guide, provides a combat weapon. The feelings, sign of weakness, are not feeling! The analysis of feeling, sign of strength, generates the most magnificent feelings I know. The writer who is taken in by feelings must not be placed on a par with the writer who is taken in neither by feelings nor himself. Youth intends sentimental lucubrations. Maturity begins to reason without confusion. He was only feeling, he thinks. He used to let his sensations wander: now he gives them a pilot. If I liken humanity to a woman, I shall not expatiate upon her youth's being on the wane and the approach of her middle-age. Her mind changes for the better. Her ideal of poetry will change. Tragedies, poems, elegies will no longer take precedence. The coolness of the maxim shall prevail!

Oh, I am more than happy to acknowledge that Trump has said "big league." If you say it was never "bigly," I am fine with that too!

And my original post up above wouldn't change one bit, if we substituted "big league" for "bigly."

"Big league" it is! Quite happily, I stand corrected on that. And again I say that I am glad that Trump stuck to the speech and left all of the "big leagues" and other Trumpisms out of it. Pretty much every single time that Trump sticks to his prepared words -- 100% to those prepared words -- he gets favorable reviews from the people with whom he is otherwise losing.

I suppose that some cadre of Trump fanatics loves Trump's free-association rants. But Trump already has that faction sewn up. He doesn't need to play to that crowd. He could shoot somebody, etc., etc., etc., etc. This is how he gets the rest of the country to hate him just a little less.

Great speech. In a subtle way he is appealing to both the religious believers and the secularists, each of whom work to form a real society based on shared values and common aspirations - rather than a fake unity of the sort that so worries certain commenters that they oppose all symbols of unity. Not mentioning anything about the shooter is part of Trump's effort to build a real social union. I think Trump knows what the shooter's motivations were, I think we are all reading between the lines, and we all think we know. Trump is interpreting the moment as a time to try to bring together religious people and secularists, appealing to the better angels of our nature.

Serious life changing losses that come unexpectedly shakes faith in true believers who wonder how the God who favors them could let that happen. But God by his spiritual presence then reassures them at those moments that they are still His and the apple of His eye.

If you are not a Christian, disregard this advice and go on hating Trump for being a sincere Christian. It's Trump's mothers fault. Those Isle of Lewis Presbyterians had far more than their share of such experience during WWI which before it was over had killed close to all their men, providently leading the single young ladies to sail off to New York. The rest is history.

I probably speak for others here, but Trump is doing a decent job of growing into the job. This sort of speech is one of the things that I missed from GW Bush. Obama just couldn't do the consoler-in-chief thing very well. Partly, I think that it was because he was too narcissistic and empathy empaired. And he tended to make everything personal and political. There is a time for politics, but this isn't the time or place. And, keeping with the program, Crooked Hillary has already slammed the NRA and silencers for the killings. We sure dodged a bullet there.

exiledonmainstreet, green-eyed devil म्हणाले...

Well, some on the left are not even attempting to fake compassion, the way Hillary is:

"A top legal executive at CBS, Hayley Geftman-Gold, said she "is not even sympathetic" for the victims of the shooting at a country music festival at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas Sunday night.

"If they wouldn't do anything when children were murdered I have no hope that Repugs will ever do the right thing," wrote Geftman-Gold on Facebook, perhaps referring to Sandy Hook. "I'm actually not even sympathetic bc country music fans often are Republican gun toters."

Kudos for honesty I guess.

A top CBS exec. Will she go home this evening and drink a toast in celebration of the deaths of deplorables? Ritmo was awfully happy when Houston got hit.

Leftists really do want us dead.

Guildofcannonballs म्हणाले...

Hardin doesn't need to convince himself over and over and over that he is a good person because he feels bad when mass homicide occurs. Because he would have to feel like a phony dupe for feeling the need for empathy he assumes most everyone else does also unless they logically reach the same conclusion he has.

I agree with him. O'Reilly years ago gave shit to the media for endlessly showcasing mass killers as it can be an incentive for others to do the same, and coming from the guy who showed every sex story he could as a way to condemn the culture while tantalizing viewers the notion we ought not celebrate the martyrdom of homicidal killers is worthy.

Offered thoughts and prayers to those suffering are objectively important in the majority of middle-class American tragedies whether due to some placebo effect or not.

I was never exactly a never-Trumper. I frantically hoped that Trump wouldn't get the nomination, and I am still furious that he did.

But I voted for Trump in the general. For me, it was an obvious political choice. And at the top of the list making it an obvious choice was the matter of the Supreme Court. And I think that the choice of Neil Gorsuch was inspired and brilliant. With much of that credit going to Leonard Leo of the Federalist Society. And with much of the confirmation battle credit going to Mitch McConnell, for his role in attaining a Republican majority in the Senate, and then in getting Gorsuch through a confirmation vote. (To say nothing of McConnell's holding up the Merrick Garland hearing and vote.)

Does Trump get credit for winning the 2016 presidential race, and being able to make that pick? Maybe. I do think that Hillary was such a rotten candidate that Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio or John Kasich would have beaten her, and perhaps by a bigger margin than Trump, so there's that.

So I have nothing to "recant." I hate Trump with a passion, but I voted for him as the least-worst option. None of my personal opinions have changed. I still hate Trump, and adore Justice Gorsuch.

No, it's part of how people form social units, by collectively constructing a group identity.

If you are part of my social group - or even just someone who shares my values - I will identify with you to some extent, not want to see harm done to you, and/or will regret whatever harm is done to you. (This appears to be what makes us all able to enjoy storytelling.)

This btw is why "empathy" is a lousy replacement for ethics - because when and whether we empathize with someone depends on whether we recognize them as sharing our values or being part of the group identity we're invested in constructing.
