"Melania Trump Has Begun Repeating Dresses."

Keen eyes notice:
On Monday, Melania Trump’s official Instagram account featured a photo of the First Lady posing with White House interns, wearing a white, sleeveless Michael Kors dress that fashion observers have seen before. Trump wore the same dress in May 2016, when Donald Trump won the Indiana primary, becoming the presumptive Republican nominee for president.

This is the first time in recent memory that the public has seen Trump re-wear something....
Recent memory. If the cognoscenti are going to talk when you re-wear something after 400+ days, you might as well cast off whatever you've worn once. The required storage and record-keeping is absurd.

Yes, yes, I know she has people for that. I just hope she thanks them for all they do every day.

Rather than stoop to repeating dresses, she should insist on wearing nothing at all.

I wasn't a fan of "Murphy Brown," but I did happen to see an episode in which we find out that Corky Sherwood, played by Faith Ford, kept a journal of what clothes she wore, at least on television. That made me wonder if there were women who actually did that.

And, of course, if she never wrote the same dress twice, the media would shriek about how elitist she is. Leave it to them in their never-ending efforts to bring down the Trumps to actually make the Trumps seem sympathetic and relatable.

I think she should take a page out of Michelle Obama's book, and wear things backward to fool the people who are trying to keep track.

Ann Althouse said...

What's your time interval on re-wearing clothes?

All my life -- school, work -- I've just assumed you don't want to wear the same thing twice in the same week. It seems the weekend cleans the slate and you're free to repeat.

Now that I'm out of school and out of work, it's more about how often to do the laundry and then wearing things in the order I like them after I've done the laundry.

I don't even have people doing that for me. Don't want them. Too much trouble. I'd have to thank them.

This headline is assumptive. She's done it once.

Mrs. Tank: Didn't you wear that T-Shirt yesterday?

Tank: What's your point?

rhhardin said...

You cannot step into the same dress twice.

And in other headlines, nobody with a real life gives a damn.

rhhardin said...

I have one washer load of identical outfits.

The only difficulty is that iron in the water stains the white socks by age and you have to match them somewhat when you dress.

Meade said...

I'm wearing the same shorts I had on yesterday. But with fresh underwear.

traditionalguy said...

OK. Wearing the best dresses again is now somehow admitting to defeat. It sounds like proclaiming Victory to me.

It appears they are testing the attack meme for 2020 election, which is that Dems want to make jobs for the blue collar guys like the Dems of old, but Trump is a snobby Class climber that secretly craves old money Mansions like the GOP of old.

Keep Tweeting, Donald.

rhhardin said...

You're not going out like that, are you?

I finally figured out why most men wore plain dark suits for 200 years--people would notice if they wore the same distinctive clothes over and over. Before that, everyone but the super rich had to, so it was no big deal.

MadisonMan said...

I've worn the same thing in a work week. Sometimes I do laundry mid-week. I doubt anyone notices.

But I don't work with fashion anal-retentivetists.

Funny how fashion reporters and those who pretend to care about such things stayed a million miles from any story involving Hillary and her recycled pant suit collection, not to mention those ridiculous Galactic Overlord-type collars she was sporting in several venues. When it comes to fashion reporting, Democrats enjoy fawning treacle or studious avoidance. Republicans always garner the spectrum of coverage running from snooty dismissal to catty appraisal.

Henry said...

Tell me when she starts sewing her own.

traditionalguy said...

In the old days of doing hard work, when you bought a new suit you also bought extra pants or an extra identical suit. Dark colors only. The creativity was in the Ties.

We were also aware of jealousy from other men if our suits looked too expensive. Many Jurors already hated lawyers, so we tried to look common as possible.

But the Trophy Wife business is a different animal. So if she has a stunner, she should wear it over and over.

I teach a class that only meets once a week, so I suppose it's possible I've worn the same thing a few classes in a row. The students have a uniform, so they get off easy on that front.

I assume lady celebrities have a small wardrobe of their own, but generally are "dressed" by fashion houses and such dresses are returned after being worn once. And yes, there would have to be at least one staffer to keep track of that - probably more than one to keep out of trouble.

Ann Althouse said...

Melania's in a special situation. Designers refuse to work with her.

I've always loved her in that dress.

You have to read that in your cattiest mean girl voice.

Now I'm confused, I though Meade had given up shorts.

Did he not say on a mountain in Colorado:

"For richer for poorer,
in sickness and in health,
in long pants, not shorts"

?

As an aging and very much heterosexual male, I could give a tinker's toot what Vanity Fair or any other collection of catty mean girls might say about Melania Trump wearing the same dress twice, or for that matter wearing the same dress for a hundred days in a row.

She is (a) a very attractive woman; and (b) knows how to wear clothes with style--her past as a model helps in that regard. Most women writing for Vanity Fair could only hope to look so good, so the claws come out.

As for me--she's awfully easy on the eyes--much more so than her predecessor.

Ann, Like you I repeat my professional wardrobe about once a week. Also, there's certain clothes that I feel so comfortable in that I wear them as often as feasible.

Chief pedant here.

Commanche Voter said "I could give a tinker's toot". The actual allusion is "tinker's dam" (not damn).

"Tinker's-dam: a wall of dough raised around a place which a plumber desires to flood with a coat of solder. The material can be but once used; being consequently thrown away as worthless".

A mainstay of the British press is What Kate Wore. She has been quite successful in peddling British schmattas.
Lately, Queen Letizia of Spain, a babe, has been getting lots of ink. But my personal favourite in that category is Sophie, the Duchess of Wessex, a very handsome woman of a certain age and daughter-in-law of HMQ.

I'm pretty sure she has repeated before. There is a FLOTUS fashion twitter account that I swear has shown her in the same dress before. I didn't follow it though, so I can't doublecheck.

What a smug article though. Can't report anything neutral at Vanity Fair if the Trumps are involved.

The truth is that Melania Trump could show up in a burlap sack and still look better than the Vanity Fair editors. Her personality contributes a great deal to her beauty, and it would shine through a burlap sack even.

I think people underestimate her. She's gorgeous, but also brilliant. And once Trump married her.... as far as I know, his playboy days were done. She is clearly no trophy wife; she is as best as I can tell an equal partner.

Good for her.

Mrs. Tank: Didn't you wear that T-Shirt yesterday?

That would be a pointless remark for me to make to my husband since his daily garb consists of 501 jeans and CarHart tee shirts (WITH pocket) in about 4 colors. He has dozens of each, grey, navy, green and a lighter grey. How could I possibly tell he wore the same one yesterday other than that one would be covered in crud, mud, iron bacteria and other gunk. Fashion maven he is not.

Melania should start wearing off the rack things from Kohls, WalMart, Penny's and Macy's for the more upscale look and screw the designers who don't want to "dress" her. She would look just as good and show solidarity with the rest of us who can't afford designer clothing.

Dust Bunny Queen said...

What's your time interval on re-wearing clothes?

When I was working, I tried to not wear the same thing in the same week as well. Sometimes not in two weeks. I was especially careful to not repeat on the same day of the week in case a reoccurring appointment or meeting would have the same people and then they would think that I had only ONE suit, one dress etc.

Now that I'm retired it doesn't matter. Although I do try no to wear the same T-shirt two days in a row to the store/post office/bank. Those people see me daily. At least I can change it up a bit :-)

William said...

I exclusively wear jeans in winter and khaki shorts in summer, but I wear different colored polo and sweatshirts. Some of them aren't blue. I'm far more fashion forward than rhhardin. Small sartorial details can make a big impression......Melania is good looking and dresses well. The press should not criticize her appearance. They should make fun of her accent. Perhaps she has some relatives in the old country who were Nazi sympathizers.

HoodlumDoodlum said...

Gotta imagine if she hadn't repeated after some arbitrary amount of time there'd be a story about how she, unlike "regular women," never wears the same dress twice, has access to a huge closet, etc.

Can't win w/the Media--no reason to try.

Alternately: "You go, girl!" Also, I still don't care about the President's wife. I still don't want to live under a royal family.
