"Suprihmbé is a proheaux womanist thot scholar who wants to promote freedom, is Morrison political, and likes cats."

Okay, I just learned a new word: "proheaux."

The quote in the post title is the blurb about the author of something I was reading (at Wear Your Voice), "Being Naked With My Son/My nudity does not offend my son, because he has not been exposed to trivial conversations about modesty. My nudity means nothing to him." Excerpt:
Why is my nakedness around my child an issue? Why is him seeing my genitalia in a non-sexual manner an issue? Is he worried my child is going to develop some sort of Oedipus complex? According to Freudian lore, my son being just about around 5-years-old, is in the phallic stage. Freudian psychology is heterocentric and cissexist–it deals in binaries and doesn’t take into account a spectrum of identities. For its time it was revolutionary–but science is permeated with sexist and racist men, polluted with biases.

... At this age my son is supposed to have formed some sort of erotic attachment to me. Yet here he is, playing pretend in our living room, oblivious to the projected sexual nature of our being naked and sweating in our little house.
Ah! Freud came up. I brought up Freud this morning, in the context of the hard, pointing prong of Callista Gingrich's hair, and as I did that, I was thinking, life was so much more interesting when adult conversation flowed easily into Freudian speculation. Then prissy demands for science spoiled the fluid fun. Suprihmbé seems to be saying that Freud's work was patriarchal, but the rejection of Freud's ideas for their failure to fit the rigors of science is also patriarchal, so there is perhaps something of the counter-patriarchial in restoring Freudianism, sparingly and strategically, such as in the discussion of Callista's pointy prong.

But that word! Proheaux. I looked it up and got another article by Suprihmbé: "proheauxism: a working definition." Key to understanding the coinage: Heaux is a way to spell the plural of ho. (Do you have a better idea? I wrote "the plural of ho" because I didn't.) The definition has 4 parts. I'll just quote #3:
Sex positivity for black and brown women and femmes. Specifically sex worker & trans inclusive. Might be: a professional heaux, a refined heaux, an elegant, sensual woman of divine sex. One who owns oneself, regardless if she is attached to a man or masculine person or not. One who understands and reveres the power of healthy femininity (and masculinity) and understands that this power is beyond the physical. It is political, it is economic, it is survival, it is personal. Fuck classism. Fuck respectability. Fuck the norm. Fuck free emotional labor.

What is "Morrison political"?

When I Google that, the first thing that comes up is "Mr. Jim Morrison. The Social And Political Visionary" (in HuffPo). Sample:

"In a famous interview with Tony Thomas on CBC Radio broadcast May 27, 1970, Morrison had predicted that in the coming decade, those “people who are able to assemble masses, huge masses of people into one spot, as we witnessed in pop festivals in the last two or three years” will be “the major influences on mass culture”. He called those people “connectors”. He also said he thought that the next heroes would be “a more intellectual sort. Political activists and perhaps scientists and computer experts.”"

But I'm just going to guess that Suprihmbé's Morrison is Toni Morrison. I see that there's a book called "Toni Morrison and Motherhood: A Politics of the Heart." Blurb:

"Mothering is a central issue for feminist theory, and motherhood is also a persistent presence in the work of Toni Morrison. Examining Morrison's novels, essays, speeches, and interviews, Andrea O'Reilly illustrates Morrison builds upon black women's experiences of and perspectives on motherhood to develop a view of black motherhood that is, in terms of both maternal identity and role, radically different than the motherhood practiced and prescribed in the dominant culture. Motherhood, in Morrison's view, is fundamentally and profoundly an act of resistance, essential and integral to black women's fight against racism (and sexism) and their ability to achieve well-being for themselves and their culture. The power of motherhood and the empowerment of mothering are what make possible the better world we seek for ourselves and for our children. This, argues O'Reilly, is Morrison's maternal theory-a politics of the heart."

This one scares me. Everyone wants easily-flowing Freud on sex.

How many of us want Freud in Freudian dreams where dreams present us with our ‘murdered selves’?

Which is the what of the wherefore that Tia Dalma did for Davey Jones and his murdered self and his cut out heart. Calypso is a bitch in truth-telling. I love her. But, I’ll stick less with Sigmund, and more with Jung on dreams.

Its an interesting point to consider that rationalization does not actually require reasoning or rationality.

Anyway, the lady in question is doing a great deal of rationalizing, but I'm not sure what it is that she is rationalizing. Is she actually a "ho" and wants to excuse that, or does she aspire to be a "ho" but is not, or perhaps more likely, no longer is succeeding at it?

Or is all this simply a sort of Walter Mitty-ism?

I wonder if they'd be less boring and silly if, when they were chldren, anybody had taken the trouble to give them something resembling a real education. Boring, no, not immediately, but it takes an effort not to make a face, which requires and effort, and they tend to have no more than 30-minutes worth of material in them, after which they start repeating themselves. The worst ones repeat themselves right off and continuously which is a potential fault in all of us of course.

Have to go carefully. Let them do the talking, mostly. Since I arrived in San Francisco I think I have developed the reputation of being a good listener.

As a very traditional English teacher and proscriptive grammarian, I can explain this evolution:

"whore" is pronounced 'hoe" in dialect and spelled "ho" to avoid confusion. The plural, according to conventions, should be "hoes."

I must admit I admire the neo-graphism "heau" and "heaux." At least it's not using the apostrophe to make a plural ("ho's")

Anonymous said...

AA: Key to understanding the coinage: Heaux is a way to spell the plural of ho. (Do you have a better idea? I wrote "the plural of ho" because I didn't.)

I, too, have pondered the thorny problem of how to pluralize "ho". "Ho's" is just wrong, but "hoes" is the plural of "hoe" and "hos" looks like it should be pronounced "hoss", which could not be the plural of "ho".

But, as you and SeanF note, the elegant solution of "heaux" that you at first thought you saw, was not to be realized. Of course, there's no law that says "heaux" as a plural can't be salvaged from its clumsy mal-appropriation here, and mainstreamed.

I don't have a problem with parent child nudity (e.g. if you're showering together) if the child is as young as 5 or even a bit older -- she's not wrong that modern Americans conceptualise children as potential sexual objects to an excessive degree (though I do not think they actually sexualise them -- it's fear of pedophilia, not pedophilia itself). But I do think she's doing her son no favours by letting him think it's okay to run around the house naked. Maybe she wants to live in a world where it's okay to run around the house naked, but she doesn't. That's a recipe for disaster. Some girl is going to end up accusing him of indecent exposure at school.

What we do know is that there is an effort by social liberals to target prepubescent and adolescent boys and girls for transgender conversion therapy, including indoctrination and medical corruption. This is clearly a violation of natural conditions and medical ethics. We also know that mental imprints and anthropogenic physical transformation can have persistent effects on an otherwise normal male or female brain and body, which simulates transgender mental and physical characteristics. We live in interesting times.

Might even imagine some might insist their clients use condoms every time.

Gotta go out on a limb and say that the epidemic indicates that not ENOUGH hookers and escorts , as well as their clients, insist on the use of condoms. AND I might imagine that untreatable STDs are often transmitted by oral sex, where condoms are seldom employed.

Followed the link. Nothing said about hookers, escorts, or their clients. Must be the people who do not frequent hookers and escorts. Surprised to read that many people are not aware they have gonorrhea, which is the std that is becoming drug resistant.

Lord these people with their made up words are tiresome. How self-obsessed and self-righteous they are. Yuck.

In other words, perhaps not so well, then.

"No philosophical Dogmatist denies that there are difficulties both with regard to the senses and to all science, and that these difficulties are, in a regular, logical method, absolutely insolvable. No skeptic denies that we lie under an absolute necessity, notwithstanding these difficulties, of thinking, and believing, and reasoning, with regard to all kinds of subjects and even of frequently assenting with confidence and security" Hume. If you ask the important human questions, as Freud did, you fall outside of the Enlightenment. How important has science been in guiding your most important life choices? And why do you persist in blog postings when you know much of what you say can't be proven to be true? Freud would have been deeply interested in how Suprimhbe sees the world, and would not have brought moral judgment to his analysis.
