Street view: Dakar.

dakar

A Google grab I made a few days ago. I liked the colors, the painting, the mystery.

It's probably the jersey of the local soccer team.

Local fan club for Senegal league football team?

Ann Althouse said...

Yes, I looked up the letters NGB. It's "football."

It looks like a slum, not a mystery.

Klaban had a cartoon series, probably in Never Eat Anything Bigger Than Your Head, of a Turk, that would fit right in. Doing Turk stuff. Never very clear.

What a dump.

My dad had a few days in Dakar in 1942 on his way to North Africa via Brazil for the USAAF. I have looked at old photos and newsreels of Dakar at that time. On the surface they show an active and slightly exotic place. Stop the action from frame to frame and you find well fed Europeans and emaciated Africans dressed in rags. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6GZkjaI3nU My Dad said the African, North African and Southern Italian poverty was shockingly bad. This in a time when poverty in the United States was visible and well known.

Any other golfers here?

Whenever I see the Google street images from foreign countries, I am reminded of Sam Snead's comments on the occasion of one of his rare British Open appearances: "Whenever you leave the U.S., you're just camping out."

Dakar had an estimated population of about 100,000-120,000 in 1941. Today it's 2.4 million people.

Change.

Yeah, the concrete blocks add a certain je ne sais quoi.

I am a connoisseur of slums.
This is a rather neat slum, as slums go.

Boom! Althouse just lost interest.

Theoretically, it's fine. It's just not so good in the concrete.

Imagine a Senegalese blogger finding a photo of the most hideous American slum festooned with grafitti and declaring it beautiful.

Yeah, our slums pale by comparison. Foreign movies in India, Philippines, Africa put things in perspective.

"Any other golfers here?"

Yes but not any more.

Had to quit because of spondylolisthesis. Back trouble in other words.

I was no Tiger but my index was 9 when I had to quit at age 73.

mockturtle said...

Former golfer here, too.

What do people think about the story in NYT today about a refugee taking 5-years to become a citizen? I know students (from Taiwan, China, Pakistan, you name it) who come here to study and take over 10-years to be an H-1B holder! Forget green card or citizenship.

What I want to know is: Why people do not become refugees first, if they want to come to US? I would first (suppose I am from Pakistan) go to Syria and study there for a year, get trapped in crises, then apply for refugee. Make up a story about how I am treated bad, etc. etc. The same if I was from Indonesia. Just go to war-torn countries, study there, make up a story, be a refugee. And, before you know it, you will be US citizen. Your peers would still be in school and they will take years and years to be a citizen.

The Democrats are circulating new possible slogans including: "Democrats 2018: I mean, have you seen the other guys". I'm pretty sure this is not an Onion story. [http://hotair.com/archives/2017/07/05/hot-new-democratic-slogan-mean-seen-guys/]

Anyhow, we are supposed to crowd source other possible slogans. Always ready to help the Dems I propose several:
"Democrats 2018: Indeed we are the party of the elite"
"Sasquatch says: I'm with her"
"I'll give up Hillary Clinton when you pry her cold dead hand from the throat of the Democratic party"

Vote Democratic 2018 - or California Will Leave

I like the Google road posts - I just never seem to have a comment.

Used to...bad hips made me quit. But two hip replacements done so I may get back out there. Have to completely beat the two infections I got from the last one this spring first. I was okay, I do have a hole in one at Yahara (just east of Madison).

One part of the experience that Google Street View doesn't provide – the heat. And the humidity.

Tropics? No thanks. Never again.

They'd have more success with: "Vote Democratic and California Will Leave. We Promise."

I caddied when I was a teenager. Carried a bag for Bob Smith (Howdy Doody) once. He lost his temper on the 17th fairway when he realized his drive had landed in someone's yard (strictly out of bounds). Good tipper, though.

Also caddied for Tennessee Ernie Ford. I told him his bag weighed "16 tons" - he loved it - great tip.

Both experiences happened at the Bonnie Briar C.C. in Larchmont, NY (Bob Smith was a member, Tennessee Ernie Ford was a guest). Beautiful area, near famed Winged Foot Golf Club and Westchester C.C..

I stole one of Sam Snead's quotes: "The problem with my golf swing is I stand too close to the ball.... after I hit it"

Sorry to stray off topic. Or is this a cafe?

mockturtle said...

She didn't call it a 'cafe' but what the heck: The Brew Crew is for real! They swept the Orioles this week.

Sam Snead was a great golfer and a better quotation source,

His game and swing were legends,.

In 1997, at age 85, he shot a round of 78 at the Old White course of The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.

That's pretty good he was always a better celebrity than Hogan who could not loosen up.

Those were the great days of golf when the big paydays were still decades off.

I went to USC with Al Geiberger and, to my eternal regret, did not go out for golf. Even if I never got anywhere, they practiced at LA Country Club !

So this is what a thread with less than 700 posts looks like.

Kinda quiet.

Too quiet.......(scans the ridge line apprehensively....)

CNN reporters have been doxxed.
1. Bad thing to do. Leave them alone. Let CNN own the sewer.
2. Not a single CNN staffer will think about how threatened the gif twerp must feel, or why their threats are contemptible.

Ken B: "1. Bad thing to do. Leave them alone. Let CNN own the sewer."

I'm afraid CNN has picked a fight with a group that is not amenable to a "turn the other cheek" mentality.

This is an "eye for an eye" group and there is no way to get this genie back in the bottle.

1. If there's just a photograph and little more, I want you to consider it a café.

2. Brewers were great, and they did that escape from a rundown thing again yesterday.

They're drying/curing. It's a cinder-block factory.
