The NYT shines a spotlight on daytime drinking: "Free Drinks and Viewing Parties for ‘Must-See TV.'"

This is on the front-page of the NYT website right now:

Here's the article: "Must-See TV’: Free Drinks and Canceled Meetings for Comey’s Testimony."

I think the most important thing right now for Trump antagonists is to see if they can bring along the mass of ordinary Americans — people who are going to work and tending to their own affairs — to get them outraged and activated over "that thing" Trump and Comey might have had.

Toward that cause, I think sober attention and deep, patriotic concern should be the demeanor they would want to display to the public. . But here's the NYT:
The schedule has been cleared and the popcorn readied at Evergreen Partners, a strategic communications firm in central New Jersey, where the rule for employees on Thursday morning is simple: No client talk while James B. Comey is speaking.

“We canceled meetings when we saw what time it was on,” said the firm’s president, Karen J. Kessler, who is planning a cheese-and-crackers spread by her office’s 60-inch screen. “It’s must-see TV.”

Americans do not agree on much these days. But millions are expected to pause on Thursday to take in a spectacle already being compared to other political-cultural touchstones, like the Army-McCarthy hearings and Anita Hill’s testimony about Clarence Thomas.
Incredible! Not just the hype and the too-early drooling for blood, but the disregard for the demands of working life for active, engaged American adults. Everything will be available on the internet this evening. Who are these people going public with their plan to take off from work and drink and watch a congressional hearing? This strikes me as utterly deranged (as well as creepily privileged). How is looking deranged and economically privileged going to draw in the ordinary Americans you're going to need if you're going to get this Destroy Trump bandwagon rolling?
“They really should declare a national holiday,” said Sally Quinn, the journalist and the doyenne of Washington’s social circuit, “since no work is going to get done.”

Enterprising establishments have been quick to capitalize on the Super Bowl-like atmosphere. At Union Pub in Washington, a sports bar steps from the Hart Senate Office Building, bartenders plan to dole out a free round of Budweisers or bourbon shots every time Mr. Trump blasts out a tweet.

For those wondering: No, there will not be a limit. “We’ll give out 20 rounds” if the president tweets 20 times, Ashley Saunders, the bar’s general manager, said in an interview.

As she spoke, Ms. Saunders was testing a way to create a huge display of Mr. Trump’s Twitter feed that would run alongside the live coverage on the bar’s 18 television screens — the better for her Capitol Hill clientele to follow any presidential play-by-play.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if people took half-days or take the day off,” Ms. Saunders said. “If I had a normal job, I don’t know what I’d be doing.”
Well, I'm not surprised a bar is encouraging daytime drinking. Saunders's idea sounds like something cooked up by a team on an "Apprentice" challenge (if "The Apprentice" ever had anything alcohol-related).

In the lower paragraphs of the article, NYT tries to reach into Trump's America:
A dive bar 1,400 miles away from the nation’s capital, Jimmy’s is popular with military veterans like Doug Samuels, a retired Navy officer who voted for Mr. Trump. Nursing a Bud Light on Wednesday, Mr. Samuels said he was unlikely to watch the Comey broadcast live.

“I’d rather just listen to the pundits discuss it afterward,” he said, a display of pro-Trump bumper stickers on a nearby table’s legs.
He sounds so sober. By the way, what weird writing: "he said, a display of pro-Trump bumper stickers on a nearby table’s legs." When Sally Quinn says something, the "said" clause is followed by "the journalist and the doyenne of Washington’s social circuit." When the guy 1,400 miles out of Washington says something, the "said" clause is followed by something about what's on the leg of nearby table.

There may be real pro-Trump stickers on the table legs at Jimmy's, but there are metaphorical anti-Trump stickers all over The New York Times.

Democrats may "sympathize" with the working class, but they don't "empathize" with them. That's why Trump voters are such a mystery to them. No matter what they say it comes out wrong because they have zero empathy for working class Pennsylvanians, for example, who are far more. worried about a buddy who is a coal miner losing his job, than some ass-wipe at ESPN who thought Hank Williams Jr should be banned from Monday Night Football.

Sympathy without empathy = condescension.

Like so much the left has done and become since November, this is both funny, and at the same time, sad.

Nothing will be revealed today. Were it possible to unseat Trump, anything remotely damaging would have come out months ago. They fired their bullets, threw all of the rocks, and are now clawing the ground for clods of dirt and spitting. And they think they are winning.

Pitiful.

Deranged and privileged is correct. Ordinary people have to work, take kids to school, do things during the day, have lives that don't revolve 24/7 around hating particular political figures , and are not so enmeshed in ideology that they can't see straight. Hating Trump all the time. It must be so tedious. Trump derangement syndrome is a real thing.

Who can afford to take off work in the morning to drink and listen to yet another partisan, political hack filled clown show? Whose bosses are going to allow this? Only the wealthy and the privileged. The rest of us are sling hash, picking up the garbage, standing on our feet clerking in a boring job.

We all view these deranged and privileged as weird beings from another planet. Beings that we really don't want to get too close to either. Strange people who seem more than a bit off kilter.

My husband and I may listen to the hearings for a bit while doing other things here. But...it is 7am!!! not the middle of a work day. We will have more coffee, breakfast, get ready for WORK and laugh at the deranged and privileged.

In 2004, I wandered over to Copley Square and watched Kerry supporters celebrate his victory.

In 2004 just before the election, my daughter-in-law was visiting her girlfriend who lived on Beacon Hill. They were sitting up in their PJs gossiping when they heard Kerry's motorcade return to his mansion on Louisburg Square. They threw on robes and ran down the hill in slippers to watch. When they got there, the cops and SS guys wandered over to visit. Here are two cute girls in robes and slippers so they had quite a chat,

The cops were regaling them with stories of police calls to Kerry's mansion when his wife would have drunken rages and throw things at him like Hillary used to do to Bill in the White House. They told the girls they had a couple of calls a month to the Kerry mansion.

Good times. Maybe today will be similar.

Given Comey's testimony from early May just before he was fired, no one with an IQ above 85 should have been expecting him to come in today and tell Congress that Trump obstructed the investigation. Given the written testimony released yesterday, no one with a pulse should expect that this morning, and I write that as someone who is just about certain that Comey will try to lean his testimony as anti-Trump as he can get away with, but Comey was always constrained today by what he had previously said publicly.

This bullshit came out at the end of the Summer and nobody would put their name on it. Since Hillary conducted all her SOS business on her private servers, what are the odds that only 3 classified messages would have been received over 4 years? And recall, Hillary had years to clean up the drives as the FBI didn't get around to confiscating them or even bothering to haul her in for an interview. The staff of the NYT thinks "everyone" is all those people without whom the nation can easily get along. This will not end well, politically or for the staff of the NYT. It's a shame that Trump can't monetize all this hype and attention. In my lifetime I never saw anyone who could GARNER so much attention from people on all sides. He may be climbing right over top of Elvis as the most well known person in history. Trump may be a new species of human being that lives not only in the physical realm but walks, or rather stomps around the zeitgeist like an opera star on stage - at least in the collective and individual minds of the left.

Mr. Samuels shows a hell of a lot more intelligence than Ms. Kessler.

I will also note that the patronizing way they characterize Mr. Samuels and his bar is evidence of their supposedly new-found interest in covering fly-over country. They used to ignore it, now they denigrate it, and that is supposed to be progress.

Isn't it amazing how blind they are to that? That used to be, something people were very sensitive to and they cringe at the suggestion that they were like that. Now, as Trump has caused all standards and pretenses on the left to evolve into inconvenient baggage to be discarded, they are free to be consumed with their singular rai·son d'ê·tre: destroy him.

I just came back to offer this link to another NYT article, which reviews the actual Democratic "base" problems as they emerged in the post-electoral analysis of the 2016 general election. Bottom line: working class defection not confined to whites. I think it very much supports Ann's critique of the featured article.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/08/opinion/the-democratic-party-is-in-worse-shape-than-you-thought.html?_r=0
Sifting through the wreckage of the 2016 election, Democratic pollsters, strategists and sympathetic academics have reached some unnerving conclusions.

What the autopsy reveals is that Democratic losses among working class voters were not limited to whites; that crucial constituencies within the party see its leaders as alien; and that unity over economic populism may not be able to turn back the conservative tide.

This strikes me as utterly deranged (as well as creepily privileged). How is looking deranged and economically privileged going to draw in the ordinary Americans you're going to need if you're going to get this Destroy Trump bandwagon rolling?

You're trying to demand that the "elite" and "meritocratic" left treat the rest of the country as if they're actual people, with actual, valid, concerns.

But as the rest of us are just a "basket of deplorables", that's crazy talk.

This is what happens when politics becomes your religion, as it has for the Left. Their complete inability to have even the slightest shed of empathy for The Other drives everything they do, from Identity Politics (skin color and sex define us, there's no reaching across those lines), to support for the antifa and other speech restrictions (we possess the only correct beliefs, therefore no one who disagrees with us should be allowed to speak), to The Resistance (we have all the correct ideas, there's no way any Republican can have legitimate power).

As you note, this mentality makes it difficult for them to win politically. Which means we're headed for a huge blowup.

One where they'r going to find they can't win a physical fight, either

Are you determinedly ignorant, or just utterly dishonest?

Whether or not something is MARKED classified is utterly irrelevant.

I'm going to repeat that for you, just in case you're really slow:

Whether or not something is MARKED classified is utterly irrelevant.

When you sign the paperwork giving you the clearances she had, you get told about "inherently classified" information, such as anything repeating what a foreign leader said in private to US Gov't officials.

Hillary absolutely knew that she would be receiving classified data when she set up her server. She set it up anyway because nothing was more important to her than her ability to set up corrupt deals as SoS, and then hide the trail from FOIA.

She should be in jail.

And when you say "marked classified" you define yourself as a dishonest / stupid / ignorant left wing hack.

That's because they are.

For instance, google "Lena Dunham parents art" and gaze at the weirdness. Definitely NSFW. Her parents are famous artists. They help define what is acceptable in contemporary art. Members, in good standing, of the over-class. Or that Spirit Cooking thing. I read a piece in New York Mag purporting to debunk that it was occult. Just wild, wacky performance art. OK, well guess what, to anybody in flyover country, that performance art is disgusting. But hey, the over-class likes it.

Something is wrong with over-class culture, and in the Internet age, people are finding out about it.

Who are these people going public with their plan to take off from work and drink and watch a congressional hearing?

It's not so much "take off from work" or "drink" that I object to. Sounds like fun! Stick it to the man! Hobos for Dukakis!

What I object to is "watch a congressional hearing."

You want to talk about corruption and decadence, look what your concept of fun is now, NYT. Oh my God. What is wrong with you people?

If I was an ear worm, climbing into your NYT skull, checking it out for a possible home, this is what I would see.

Pride! Giant walls of pride. I don't know if I can get in there, with those giant inflexible walls of pride. Let me keep slithering along. Oh shit, it's ennui. A giant slime-wall of ennui. Drip, drip, drip. Oh shit, I'm in an echo chamber. It's a giant echo chamber! And they're cheering? What? Oh yes, it's the fall of the republic. Hip hip, hooray! Hip hip, hooray! Oh no, it's waves of alcohol and bile, sloshing into the echo chamber. What a disgusting unholy mess of bile and agitation and now I'm worried about repeating the word "bile" in one paragraph, teacher is watching, oh shit it's turning colors, kinda brown now, got to get out. Get out, get out!

And I'm off to the swimming pool. Because it's a nice day.

Trump should be bratty and just tweet out "Drink" 50 times to put the bar in the red. OTOH, Trump doesn't drink and hence probably doesn't like to encourage drinking. But it would be fun.

Could you shoot out a memo to the DJT administration that lays out your legal and security knowledge?

Well, the relevant law is the Federal Records Act, which defines the requirements for records retention. During the time that Hillary Clinton was Secretary of State the definition of a federal record was:

"... all books, papers, maps, photographs, machine-readable materials, or other documentary materials, regardless of physical form or characteristics ..."

As to my own knowledge of InfoSec, I have designed and developed information systems going back thirty-five years, mostly systems intended to hold sensitive (healthcare) or classified (Dept. of Defense) information. I have numerous publications or presentations in refereed technical journals, such as the IEEE Systems Journal. There are plenty of people who know more than I do, but apparently you are not one of them, PB.
