The Washington Post writes an ambiguous headline.

"Georgetown professor confronts white nationalist Richard Spencer at the gym — which terminates his membership."

When I opened the tag for that article (hours ago) I assumed that the professor got his membership terminated, but now I see I am wrong.
An Alexandria gym terminated the membership of white nationalist Richard Spencer last week after he was confronted by a Georgetown University professor who recognized him and lambasted him over his alt-right views.
Why was the person who got confronted terminated?

The professor, C. Christine Fair, of Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, asked Spencer if he was Richard Spencer, and when he denied it (because he didn't want trouble, she said: "Of course you are, so not only are you a Nazi — you are a cowardly Nazi." And: "I just want to say to you, I’m sick of your crap... As a woman, I find your statements to be particularly odious; moreover, I find your presence in this gym to be unacceptable, your presence in this town to be unacceptable."

Finally, as the professor tells it, the general manager told her she was creating a "hostile environment" at the gym, and "Fair responded that Spencer’s views create a 'hostile environment' for gym employees who are women and people of color." But later:
Fair said she was contacted by a corporate representative for the gym last week, who informed her that Spencer’s membership had been terminated. The gym wanted her to come in to provide more information about the incident.“I’d do it again,” she said of the episode. “I told the fellow, ‘I think we can have a deal here: You don’t let any more Nazis in, and I won’t be making a scene.’ ”

This was the best: "I just want to say to you, I’m sick of your crap... As a woman, I find your statements to be particularly odious; moreover, I find your presence in this gym to be unacceptable, your presence in this town to be unacceptable."

"As a woman..." You know whatever comes after that is going to be ridiculous. It's particularly odious for a woman to run into a Nazi? His Naziness offends her in a special way through her vagina? You'd think we would have sent our women to fight the Hun in WW2 if that were the case. Or is this odiousness debilitating, would have weakened our armed forces, and it's just through her superior abilities that this particular woman was able to approach him.

Were other women at the gym similarly affected? I mean, they would have to be, for her statement as a woman to hold up.

Were they all trying to figure out who the odious Nazi was within the male population when they got together in the women's locker room? And if so, why weren't these other uber-affected women not interviewed as part of the article?

I have no love for Spencer, but that gym sure got intellectually cleansed, didn't it? And before anyone claims ethnic cleansing can't be compared to intellectual cleansing, I give you Exhibit A: Pol Pot.

And for anyone who would care to argue that Pol Pot's intellectual cleansing was clearly orders of magnitude more serious than the intellectual cleansing of the gym (and it was), I'll point out that the amount of ethnic cleansing committed by Spencer is of much lesser magnitude than the amount of intellectual cleansing of the gym.

And if any of that makes any sense, it'll be a miracle.

So the business refused to serve Spencer because of his political views.

There are Protected Classes created by the Amended Constitution and by Legislation: race, sex, family status, etc.

The first Amendment declares "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;.... That has been stretched to apply to the States and lower political subdivisions, even stretched so far as to prohibit the occasional display of religious symbols in public buildings.

In some cases Protected Classes are protected in private contracts (wedding cake bakers...).

Question for the lawyers... did the club violate a contract?

I imagine Spencer had paid for a full month of membership, and was kicked out mid-month. Did he violate any terms of his membership contract that could result in membership revocation? Did he suffer any damages as a result of the fallout?

Is he actually a Nazi? A verifiable, card-carrying member of the National Socialist Workers Party? I doubt it. But someone is running around calling him a Nazi. I would regard that pretty damaging if it happened to me and it found its way into the Washington Post. Yeah, he's a public figure - sort of - though I had never even heard of him until the day after election day, when the Democrat talking points memos came out directing their mouthpieces at NPR and CNN to turn him into the leader of the GOP.

But even if he is a public figure, would it be that hard to show actual malice on Fair's part? Look at her history with her "Shit Men Say" blog and her unhinged attack on her former coworker. If that's not actual malice, what is?

It's probably about time these insufferable libtards got held to their own standards.

Of course it wouldn't end there. You'd be labeled the Nazi gym and at least half your customers would leave and maybe you'd end up closing your doors. And you're not a justice warrior, you're a provide for your family warrior.
Do you want to lose everything sticking up for a guy who thinks the wrong side won the war? Who's just going to use you for his own agenda? Maybe Spencer was minding his own business at that moment, but he chose to become a lightening rod. As the gym owner, you're not obligated to hold his hand when the storm comes in.

As a woman, I find your statements to be particularly odious; moreover, I find your presence in this gym to be unacceptable,

There is a cis normative statement if I ever heard of one.

She's just lucky Spencer isn't a transexual.

A Michigan woman lost her Planet Fitness membership over the "inappropriate" manner in which she complained about a transgender woman in the locker room, a gym spokeswoman said.

Yvette Cormier's membership was not canceled for simply raising the issue, "as we welcome all feedback from our members," said McCall Gosselin, director of public relations at Planet Fitness Corporate.
Rather, it was the manner in which she expressed her concerns that club management felt was inappropriate, resulting in the cancellation, Gosselin said.
Cormier stands by her actions in a case that has drawn attention to transgender rights.
"This is all new to me. I didn't go out to specifically bash a transgender person that day. I was taken aback by the situation," Cormier told CNN. "This is about me and how I felt unsafe. I should feel safe in there."

Typical cis-normative reaction by a hater.

If Spencer had a vagina, that professor would be in deep do do.

'Fair... asked Spencer if he was Richard Spencer, and when he denied it (because he didn't want trouble, she said: "Of course you are, so not only are you a Nazi — you are a cowardly Nazi."'

Is that actually believable? Should we believe it because she said so?

If someone asked me if I were Char Char Binks, in a confrontational way, I'd probably say something like, "Who wants to know?", or "None of your business.", or "Go suck ebola dick and die.", depending on how polite I was feeling.

Once again, we only get the anti-Spencer POV, and it actually makes him seem more like the kind of guy I'd want working out in my gym than the uglier-than-Melissa-Click Professor Fair.

Spencer should have kicked her grubby teeth down her nasty throat. I hope Milo doxes and harasses her to suicide.

If Spencer had a vagina...

It's not too late. Also, it's transgender, not transsexual, which is a twilight belief. He only needs to feign homosexual, bisexual, or cross-over in order to exploit the social leverage of that status. Maybe he's gender fluid. I suppose that's the very definition of bisexual. Pro-Choice.

Bob Boyd said...

"That's Fair's game."

They're both in the same game.

DanTheMan:

Christians are not refusing service to transgender/homosexual individuals. They are refusing to normalize or promote the associated behavior. The analogous response in this case is not to deny Spencer a gym membership, but to deny his [class] diversity beliefs. However, in order for this to be reconcilable, they would also need to deny membership to every Democrat and likely leftist who judge individuals by the "color of their skin" under their [class] diversity doctrine. Then there is Pro-Choice/abortion or denying life unworthy. The Nazi speaks.

Boyd,
I admit I don't follow Spencer's activities. Has he confronted and tried to get an individual removed from something equivalent to a gym? Fair's game appears to be things like this...singling out individuals.

I've googled other news stories on the internet about this. What's interesting is that 85% don't mention that Fair is the crazy left-wing nut that was stalking another Georgetown prof and subjecting her to foul abuse for voting for Trump.

What's even odder is that story happened in the last 5 months. But I guess it went down the memory hole, like all bad stories about the Left.

Unfortunately, the benefits are imaginary as well.

If I owned the Gym I would have terminated Spenser and Fair. I'd terminate Spenser because I wouldn't want the headache or risk having a bunch of Leftist creeps picketing me and calling my business a "Nazi Gym".

I'd terminate Fair for creating a scene and making the other customers uncomfortable. Tomorrow, she could scream at someone for wearing a Cross, or saying a prayer. Or having a "Trump is Great" teeshirt.

She's a left-wing shit. I wouldn't want her in my Gym.

rcocean said...

Waiter - I guess being a Leftist means never having to say your sorry.

Also, I love how she's as whitebread as they come, but she's speaking for "the people of color".

Lefties always do that. They're honorary black people and can speak for them. They can even call people like Judge Thomas "uncle tom's"

Because being a Lefty means you're never racist.

'I anticipate being kicked out from our gym, Old Town Sport & Health in Alexandria, VA, because I confronted Richard Spencer, aka the Neo Nazi who has moved his hate operations to Alexandria Virginia.

First, I want to note that this man is a supreme coward. When I approached this flaccid, sorry excuse of a man and asked ‘Are you Richard Spencer,“ this pendulous poltroon said "No. I am not.” But of course he was...'

'Second, I exploited the full range of my first amendment entitlements by telling him that this country does not belong to white men. As a white woman, I find his membership at this gym to be unacceptable. I found his membership at this gym to be an unfair burden upon the women and people of color–and white male allies of the same. I also loudly identified him as a neo-Nazi who has said, inter alia, the below detailed things.

Third, as the attached photo attests, this pusillanimous shitbird actually requested one of the African American Female Trainers to help him escape from my confronting him. Seriously? This superior race of a white man needed the help of a female African American? What kind of martial race member is he?

To my abject horror–a white woman defended him and yelled at me for making a scene and threatned (SIC) to call the police to which I said “Do it. I’m not breaking the law.” She claimed that she had no idea who he was and expressed indifference to the same. I told her that when she googles this wretch, she should be ashamed of herself and apologize to me and every employee at this gym who must suffer the indignities of treating this man like a civilized person when he is orthogonal to a civilized person. He a hateful, white supremacist who has no place in this century..much less our gym.'

Sounds like the type of mentally unhinged individual that frequents college campuses, a person taught the delusion of never suffering consequences. I don't waste my time inquiring about a person's politics at the gym and I certainly don't think I have the right to dictate who is acceptable and unacceptable.

I wouldn't want a neo-nazi in my gym, if I were a member or if I were the owner. Neo-nazis are either nuts or bad people, or both. Good riddance!

Also, I don't think it's good that people are defending Richard Spencer. The guy is a bad person. He's an anti-Semite, and he even seems to admire Hitler. In America, he has a right to be a jerk, and that of course is the way it should be -- but we also have the right to disapprove of him and shun him.

Matthew Goggins: The self-admiration comes off your post in shimmering waves.

Matthew Goggins said...

Owen: Thanks for the ad hominem attack. It simplifies the debate, since you lose by default, thank you for playing.

Walter: Based on the fact that most gyms, especially ones that are part of a larger network, have contracts filled with the all the usual boilerplate language that allows management a certain amount of latitude to deal with disruptive or otherwise unwelcome members.

That's not to say it was 100% legal to give Mr. Spencer the heave-ho, but there is probably at least enough wiggle-room that no lawyer would be willing to take on Mr. Spencer's case.

Lewis Wetzel said...

Well, at least we know who the intolerant people are, don't we?
"Not tolerating intolerance" means the opposite of what most people think it means. It is an announcement, proudly made, that a person will not tolerate something. Christine Fair is so intolerant that she will not tolerate being the member of a club that shows toleration.

walter said...

Well Matthew, I've never belonged to a gym. Assuming you have, do indulge us with said boilerplate example.understanding no offensive activities were undertaken in the gym...(excluding Fair's confrontation)

I wonder how many people support [class] diversity: judging and discriminating between people based on the "color of their skin", and Pro-Choice/abortion or selective-child: denying life unworthy. Perhaps immigration reform and refugee crises forced by elective wars. Something embraced and advocated by the mainstream left and anti-nativists. The Washington Post seems to be a platform for dissemination of their progressive liberal ideology.

n.n said...

Lewis Wetzel:

Professor, C. Christine Fair, of Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, outed Spencer, despite his best effort to keep his mouth shut about his and her belief in [class] diversity.

Matthew Goggins said...

I've belonged to seven different gyms. I'm not saying the contract says Spencer can be booted out, I'm saying there is probably a clause, "Member should not be disruptive -- yada, yada, yada, " that could be stretched to cover neo-nazi activities outside of the gym itself.

You've asked me twice for specific examples of such language. I respectfully suggest that if you are so interested, you may wish to research a few contracts yourself. I'm not your lawyer, I'm just making some fairly simple and non-controversial points in a comment thread.

You can believe what I'm saying or not, your choice. Thank you for the healthy skepticism, but how about using it against neo-nazis instead of for them? If you were the owner of a fitness center, would you invite Mr. Spencer to join it because you feel sorry for him?

walter said...

Ahh..there it is: "If you were the owner of a fitness center, would you invite Mr. Spencer to join it because you feel sorry for him?"
It is so boilerplate you have to imagine it and send me to look fo it. And the owner just might have invited Spencer to join..just like all folks with a mailing address in that area.

walter said...

Maybe it would be helpful to view Spencer's views as a variable...an O..for offensive..viewpoint.
You have the Fair folk sussing out the O's and exposing them to get them banned from public interaction.
Feel just?

Matthew Goggins said...

Okay, Walter, you've won this time. I no longer understand what you are saying. However, to address what I think you might be saying: I'm not imagining anything -- I'm just pointing out that if you really want an answer to your question, it is just as easy for you to do the research as it is for me, so go for it. Also, it is not relevant if the owner invited Richard Spencer to join. The owner didn't know who Spencer was until the professor told him.

So would you invite Mr. Spencer to join your gym if you had one? If you feel he was being treated unfairly, then you would be willing to help him out if you could, right?

walter said...

Sorry Matthew if you can't follow.
But no..I would not specifically invite Spencer..should I have one of these "imaginary" gyms spoken of upthread.
The point is who is fucking up my gym business by causing a "ruckus". In this case it's the Fair lady.

walter said...

By the way, you can transpose any Trump offspring into the O category...would flip Fair's lid.
