Oh, Sono Bello. I see those ads all the time. They are all about how fabulous you can look (it's all women, natch) once someone gets in and slices off "unwanted" fat. Needless to say, none of the customers in the ads were ever seriously obese; they're just a bit overweight and want back their bodies of twenty or thirty years ago. No bariatric surgery for them. Call me underwhelmed. Although by the standards of their competition (on Sunday mornings, almost exclusively pharma ads) they're not that bad.
I rarely post on Cafe posts, but perhaps this will spark some discussion.
One of my college friends posted a video of her public school children singing in San Francisco over the weekend. They are part of an after-school program that puts on a musical every year. See here: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/2926444. Anyway, just a few lyrics from one of the songs:
"If only I could talk to you today, I'd get down right down on my knees and I'd pray, that you'd come home to the beauty that you planted. We had no idea, we took it all for granted. If only I could talk to you today, I'd thank you for letting us play. Such kindness, intellect, hope, and mad wit. We had no idea how good we really had it. Unicorn sparkles and rainbows galore. We felt so free under your rule. OUR HOPE AND OUR RESISTANCE WILL ANNIHILATE THE WALL!"
A hymn to Obama, or maybe Kim Jong Un; it's not like you could tell the difference. These children, when grown, will happily put my grandchildren in camps for being orthodox Christians. And a legal point: are we really "ruled" by the President? Silly me: I thought we were all ruled by the law, citizens and President alike. I must have missed too many lectures in Con Law class when I was a 1L.
I use an old bayonet from a Swedish Mauser as my lawn and garden digger/cutter. Despite having a metal sheath and being treated like crap it's weirdly resistant to rust. Plus, it's a freakin' Swedish bayonet so it embodies militarism and Euro-progressivism in the same hunk of metal.
According to a new report from Bloomberg’s Eli Lake, Trump was absolutely furious about this and chewed out his own national security adviser during a heated phone conversation.
“Trump was livid, according to three White House officials, after reading in the Wall Street Journal that McMaster had called his South Korean counterpart to assure him that the president’s threat to make that country pay for a new missile defense system was not official policy,” Lake writes. “These officials say Trump screamed at McMaster on a phone call, accusing him of undercutting efforts to get South Korea to pay its fair share.”
Lake claims that this wasn’t a one-time spat, as Trump in private describes McMaster as “the general undermining my policy,” and he has reportedly expressed regret that he didn’t appoint former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton to be his national security adviser.
Tari: If the Egyptians haven't yet put Christians in camps in all the years since 642 AD, I doubt Americans will do so by 2042 (assuming your grandkids are orthodox Christians).
Here is the context, introducing the program containing the song that Tari quoted.
Imagine a summer camp surrounded by an enchanted forest where loving sprites silently assist campers in becoming their authentic selves. Welcome to Camp Fridabeme! Journey with us to this magical summer utopia where the clear lakes and fresh air will open your mind!
Campers know that they feel transformed by their summers at Fridabeme, but they don't know about the magical world that supports them. Nor are they aware that the fairy kingdom is being threatened by a new elf king who has usurped power and is building a wall that will put an end to the magic of Camp Fridabeme.
Will there be a pixie resistance? Will the campers find the magic within? Come find out in this one-of-a-kind magical, musical theatrical experience!
Music by the Endoctrinaires. The Pixie Resistance will triumph, A Triumph of The Will, if you please.
readering, so "camps" would be the only thing that would mean suffering for Egyptian Christians? Not 100s of years of Dhimmi status, a 55% decline in the Christian population in the past 100 years, years of having to get government approval to do small repairs to your church, and most recently the burning of churches and the murder of Christians? Call me crazy, but I don't want Christians to suffer any of those things, at the hands of any government.
My point was, anyone who has substituted worship of the government - even more so of a particular person in the government - would be more likely to agree to the persecution of others who don't share that adoration. See as an example every communist country that has ever existed (and those gulags? they were "camps").
I was raised in the Methodist church. I'm familiar with Eastern Orthodox, Greek Orthodox, Orthodox Jews, and Russian Orthodox (which might be the same as Eastern), but I've never heard the phrase Orthodox Christian.
Tari: I am familiar with the notion of communist camps. Because of personal circumstances happen to have known many RC survivors from PRC labor camp. Heroic survivors. So I react and find it fanciful when the term is applied to the United States, however irreligious people might consider some of their fellow citizens to be.
(of a person or their views, especially religious or political ones, or other beliefs or practices) conforming to what is generally or traditionally accepted as right or true; established and approved. "the orthodox economics of today" synonyms: conservative, traditional, observant, devout, strict
I also wanted to clarify what I meant when I said that "these children, when grown, will happily put my grandchildren in camps for being orthodox Christians." I didn't mean I necessarily thought they would ever have the power to do so. It would take a lot of radical change not just to the government in this country but also to its people for that to happen. But would these people applaud such a move? Would they agree that Christians with orthodox beliefs need correcting and, if they government provided the means to do so, would they cheer? I believe they would.
I think it's a good idea to notice small things like this video and realize that a certain portion of your fellow citizens would attempt to forcibly change your beliefs if given the opportunity to do so. It helps to know how the other side thinks.
readering, good try, but you can't insult me with 2 things I've never done. And I've never watched Fox News, nor have I ever uttered the phrase "War on Christmas".
If you wanted to stop having the conversation, you could have just said so, or perhaps just have disappeared? Like I will do now, having dinner to cook, teenagers to cajole into chores, and dogs to walk. I hope you have as nice an evening as I will. Cheers.
Ok you didn't get your notion that some Americans will soon want to put others into camps from a blowhard on Fox News. Since you signed off, I won't hazard another guess. Well, one--an orthodox church congregation.
Hey, Ann! Glenn is challenging you again, the scoundrel. This time over a certain lack of performance when it comes to "women" vs. men in administering CPR. It seems the women are comparatively dangerous.
(Sorry, I was unable to copy/paste the permalink - but it's over there in broad daylight)
David, I saw that. What he's doing is reminding people of my longstanding rule that studies are reported as if whatever is true of women is good. This was an example where "the Althouse rule " wasn't followed. I assume it's because there was no decent way to claim women are bet.

I can't find it online, but the best commercial I've ever seen is by Sono Bello.
They have a lady say something like: OMG, I don't know what to say. I'm just...
VERY powerful stuff.
Buy stock.
That's my favorite garden tool. We have two of them.

"Obama warned Trump about Flynn" is today's CNN/MSNBC synchronized-swimming narrative.
On the other side, they're hoping Sally Yates will come in and just spill her guts.
But at the moment they're still digesting their copious lunch, so Yates will just have to wait for the flatulence to subside.

They've been blowing them up lately.

Are Catholics orthodox?

madAsHell. It was lower case orthodox:
(of a person or their views, especially religious or political ones, or other beliefs or practices) conforming to what is generally or traditionally accepted as right or true; established and approved.
"the orthodox economics of today"
synonyms: conservative, traditional, observant, devout, strict
So to answer your question, Oftentimes.
readering, do you think it's impossible for that to happen here? Do you think people worshiping a leader makes it more or less likely?
Lot's of things are possible. Executive Order 90660 for one. Not what I worry about. Pubic Law 103-141 passed House unanimously and Senate 97-3.
I also wanted to clarify what I meant when I said that "these children, when grown, will happily put my grandchildren in camps for being orthodox Christians." I've read more clueless and douchey replies on this blog, but not many.
Grass? For a second, I thought that they were ramps. Just scored a bunch of those today, so everything looks like them.

Women are better
Actually, the stand-alone correction inadvertently establishes an entirely new Althouse rule.
Which means that somewhere down the road, you may be compelled to answer for Emma Watson -and- Kim Kardashian.

Two is the necessary minimum — so you still have one until the one you've lost shows up and you have two again.
