Did a loop trip of the area about 10 years ago, and saw Grand Canyon, Bryce, and Zion. I had been to the GC before, but the family had not seen any of them. We ranked them Bryce, then Zion, with GC in third.
In telling that story over the years I have angered a few people who thought the GC is the best of all parks and how could anyone disagree. Oh, well.
I rank Yosemite and Yellowstone above all three of those.
We visited Goblin Valley, Spooky Gulch, Peekaboo Slot Canyon, Capitol Reef National Park, Bryce National Park, Zion National Park, Lake Powell, Rainbow Arch, Grand Canyon, and the four falls in the Havasupai Reservation. All totaled, we hiked over 50 miles: quite a feat for the young—and for Ann and me.
Places like this remind me why it is impossible to take seriously the Chicken Littles of the Global Warming cries of "the ice is going to melt....we are all gonna drown....the sky is falling....everyone run into the fox hole....." Gaaaah.... shut up!!!!
You are looking at millions and millions of years of sedimentary deposits. and the resulting erosion over millions of years. The Earth cools. The Earth heats up. Oceans move around from location to location. Rivers come, go, dry up, flood, change courses. Glaciers scour the land and then disappear into deserts. Animals evolve, live, devolve, die.
All of this without little 'ole man. Should we try to be the best stewards of the land during the brief wink of an eye that we are here. Of course. However, the world goes on with or without us.
Bryce Canyon should awe and humble us and teach us our place in the universe.
"Cohen said, “Mel D texted, ‘What's worse? When a guy gets a boner during a sex scene, or when he doesn't?...’”
...Jackson noted that he tries to cover all of his bases, saying, “See I always apologize first. ‘I'm sorry if I do, and I'm sorry if I don't.’ That generally works.”
I read this, and I think to myself: can I remember Samuel L. Jackson ever doing a sex scene? For that matter, can I even remember Denzel Washington doing a sex scene? Laurence Fishburne? Forest Whitaker? Morgan Freeman? I think you see my train of thought...
I can certainly remember them paired up with various white Hollywood actresses, but it seems Hollywood has a problem showing Black Men having sex with White Women in Big Hollywood movies. Is America not able to handle Julia Roberts with Denzel thrusting above her? Are we too delicate to see a sweating Samuel L. Jackson taking Brie Larson from behind? Is it a question of whether we can psychologically handle Scarlett Johansson simulating fellatio on Morgan Freeman?
Does this imagery automatically bring us to some nationally-shared vision of the Antebellum South, where brooding muscular black men in chains lusted after delicate white ladies of the House? Is this what we think of when we see Denzel and Julia pretend not to see each other "that way"? Are we forever lost in the 1975 film "Mandingo"?
Time for a Poll:
Why does Hollywood not let Denzel and Samuel get busy with the White Women?
1. Racism, straight up.
2. It was never essential to the plot. It had nothing to do with White Hollywood Moguls being frightened by the idea of Big Black Cocks.
3. Because Samuel L. Jackson would muthafukkin' tear that Brie Larson UP!
4. No one wants to see Morgan Freeman's 'Orgasm face'.
5. Maybe Hollywood should remake "Mandingo" with Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlett Johansson. Box Office Gold!
6. Maybe Hollywood should remake "Gone With The Wind." With Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlett Johansson. Samuel L. Jackson would muthafukkin' tear that Scarlett up, AND frankly not give a damn.
Fantastic place! I was there in August; no snow. However, on the same trip we had snow in Yellowstone on August 15. Of course that was before global warming.
It's beautiful to look at now, but as Bryce himself said, "It's a hell of a place to lose a cow!"
All of Southern Utah is rugged and gorgeous. It's also a nightmare to farm in, and the early pioneers who were sent to colonize the area did not have fun.
But it is great tourism country now! I'm glad you get to experience it, Ann (and Meade, too!)

It all comes from God.
Oh! My!
Althouse -- I'm really glad you were able to see Bryce Canyon. It is one of my favorite places.
Wow.
Never been, have to go now.
Thank you.
Utah is a mf-ing treat. All my friends want to travel the world and I'm like "Fool, you haven't seen half of this country!"
Beautiful photos.

Q: Meade or Mitt?
Are you camping out up there?
Is that snow?
Jaw dropping- and as good of a photographer as Althouse is, I'll bet the photos still pale in comparison to first hand viewing.
So what is the story of those formations? That can't be just erosion, they look like stalagmites but that doesn't make sense either in the open air.
How beautiful!
Absolutely stunning!
Beautiful

Just gorgeous. Enjoying retirement much? :)
Must have been cold. As i remember, the elevation is about 8,400 feet depending on where you are in the park?
That view is ... stunning. thanks.
Ann, this must be your new camera. You aren't getting these pictures with a phone. Nice work.
