"Was Queen Elizabeth hot?/Confirm. She was very stylish in the ’60s."

"She had a fabulous figure, fabulous waist and big bosoms, and she looked good in her clothes."

That's André Leon Talley, doing a "Confirm or Deny" interview with Maureen Dowd. I'm putting this up for Meade because just yesterday we had a discussion about whether it's ignorant or jauntily jocose to put "bosom" in the plural (when speaking of only one person) and because the interview — the whole thing — is very amusing.

The OED takes my side on "bosoms": "In recent use, a woman's breasts. colloq." with quotes going back to 1959:
1959   C. MacInnes Absolute Beginners* 68   Snaps of the Dean sell like hot ice-cream among vintage women with too many bosoms and time on their hands.
1961   L. Hughes Ask your Mama 72   Sojourner..Bared her bosoms, bared in public To prove she was a woman.
1965   I. Fleming Man with Golden Gun v. 70   She gave him a quick glimpse of fine bosoms as she bent to the door of the icebox.
1978   C. Beaton Parting Years 2   Can you really imagine that is the way the arm comes out of the socket? Look at their bosoms—they're nowhere near where they should be. Have you ever seen a naked woman?
1986   Observer 2 Mar. 60/1   She was larger than lifesize: enormous buttocks and stomach, with two medium-sized watermelons for bosoms.
Those are some fine quotes! I love "medium-sized watermelons." Meade is outside shoveling snow, and here I am consulting the Oxford English Dictionary to win a debate from yesterday. It's not really a debate. I agree that "bosom" embraces the entire chestal area. "Bosoms," like "chestal area," is silly, and that is the point. By comparison, "breast" has always referred to the entire area OR to one of "the two soft protuberances situated on the thorax in females, in which the milk is secreted for the nourishment of their young; the mamma" (as the OED delightfully puts it). And by "always" I mean both meanings predate modern English.

Maureen Dowd got 2 articles out of her encounter with André Leon Talley. The other one is "Monsieur Vogue Is Leaving Trumpland." It's kind of sad. I don't remember noticing André Leon Talley, but he's an important fashion person. There had to be a reason to see him as being in Trumpland for it to be possible for him to be leaving Trumpland.

In fact, he'd traveled with Melania and helped her pick out her wedding gown. He'd "called Melania charming and private, 'soignée and polished' with 'impeccable' manners." He'd said that Melania was “a wonderful person to be with,” and that she “will be one of the great stars in the administration,” and even "I hope there will be a great, great Trump presidency.”

He got slammed by — well, Dowd doesn't say who:
It didn’t take long for the guillotine to fall. One friend emailed him, “Oh my God, you have gone to the Evil Empire!!!!!”
We're supposed to just somehow know that the fashion world demands that Trump be hated.

Did Talley contact Dowd and request some reputation-saving publicity? The next paragraph is:
He agonized about the “tragedy of ruptured friendships” to me in an email, saying about Melania: “She’s a nice person. I do not endorse Trumpism on any level. So why can’t one be positive and want her to shine? I mean, it’s good she cares about napkins, crystal, dinner plates with gilded edges to the point of over the top, and abundant flower arrangements. In the end, why pick on her when they should be picking on her husband’s billionaire cabinet and his seeming readiness to turn the country back towards oppression, anti-Semitism, anti-culturalism, etc.”
It sounds as though he wanted to play a part in the fashion and design side of the new presidency, but he couldn't bear the risk.
As we sit in the hotel lobby, he muses: “I’m not a big person in the world. I’m maybe a big figure in the fashion world. I mean, sort of iconic. But I don’t want to get phone calls in the middle of the night, telling me I’ve gone over to Trumpland and I’m going to Darth Vader because I said nice things about Melania....."
He's afraid of bullies.

I would have loved to witness the man, a homosexual lawyer, with his husband and an infant, screaming at her. I am positive, with grace and class, in proximity, she made the man who lives without a woman, appear foolish in silence. That is grace. In truth, the man should have had his ass kicked for feeling like a man attacking a woman and her children. With dignity, she avoided the scandal.

Humlaut LeBlanc, Fashion Icon of Fabulous…

I do not know of politics: I only know Fabulous. I see a simple piece of cloth, and I alone can see the Fabulous it can be: I can see the Fabulous where others only see boring utility and function…

It is a Good Thing that those who can appreciate Fine Fashion are also the only ones who can afford it: I have heard that Jesus said the poor will always be among us, and that they will be wearing drab clothes: who am I to believe differently…?

My New Line of Fashion celebrates the Fabulousness of the Stripe: simple black stripes on simple white fabric, an old idea made New by my discerning eye…

Some may say, Humlaut, how can simple black stripes on white be Fabulous? It is my attention to Detail that makes the difference. To the white fabric with black stripes I have added a little yellow star, a remarkable flower of color against the stark background…

A simple star? Some might say anyone can do that. And others might, but they would no doubt use the patriotic Hilfiger cliche of the five-point star, like on the American flag. No: Humlaut’s Fabulous Yellow Star has SIX points…

And Fabulous cannot just stop at design: no, there needs to be Fabulous in presentation. For the Fashion Runway I wanted nothing to detract from the Fabulousness of the Clothes, so I had the models shave their heads: there was a standing ovation…!

I am Humlaut LeBlanc, and I Believe in Fabulous…

Maureen Dowd, she of the gratuitous personal insult, is in her best form in this interview (Melania Trump is the 'Slovenian Sphinx') She's talking to an obese fashion designer about the Trumps, with throw-away references to how Michelle Obama was the darling of the fashion industry "for elevating the industry “beyond the superficial to the substantive,” by framing clothing “as a collection of values: diversity, creativity, entrepreneurship.” As David Yermack, a professor of finance at New York University, noted, Michelle was also a bonanza, generating $2.7 billion in a single year for the companies she showcased."

Elevating the fashion industry beyond the superficial? You cannot be serious. Is there anything that says "superficial" more than a fall show attended by the Kardashians, assorted Hollywood white trash, rap stars in fur?

And finally, did Andre actually vote for Hillary because "quite frankly, I thought she would have brought back the pantsuit. I thought the gray trouser suit designed by Ralph Lauren she wore with the purple satin shell and the lapels matching the blouse was brilliant."

Nothing superficial about this.

You will recognize it at your finer stores by my Fabulous emblem: two lightning bolts side by side, symbolizing the synchronicity of the strikes of Inspiration and Fabulous…

Are they attacking Trump women because Trump fights back when they attack him and they think the women are easier targets? This might seem like a good idea when you live in a bubble where politics define everything, but for most of America, if our friends differ from us politically, we just find other things to talk about. Midnight calls would just let you know who's not a real friend/grown-up/mentally stable.

And it's not like he even differs politically from them, he was just doing business with "the other side". I'm trying to imagine Democratic friends of a plumber, or electrician, or car mechanic giving their friend grief over doing business with a Republican politician. It might happen, but I doubt they would be losing friends over it.

One thing you learn as a voter (I used to think) voting, is that your candidate does not always win and life goes on until the next election. But many people seem not to have got the memo.

We did not elect a dictator. Women will not be forced back into housewifery and sandwich-making, gays will not be shoved back into the closet, Japanese citizens will not be interned, and African Americans will not be sent back to plantations.

The hysteria, the moral preening and the lashing out against perceived infidels call to mind the years of Florentine derangement under Savanarola, the Christian scold turned tyrant. It worked great for him until everyone including the pope had had enough of his act and the guy was burned at the stake.

I believe we can calm our troubled waters with more grace than that, but the arrogant self-righteous contempt has passed its sell-by date. The tantrums may continue, but the audience is starting to tune it out.

Scott Adams made the point that if Trump does not act like Hitler soon, the opposition will have lost any credibility. As long as people have a normal life as good as, or better than, now the average citizen will become quite pleased with Trump. The opposition wins only when people started getting thrown into ovens - I assume there are some that are praying for that.

Stephen A. Meigs म्हणाले...

The female chest doesn't tend to get the respect it deserves. In particular, language about it is often silly sounding. I think what it is is that the incipient maternal love that the chest can feel, not being a directly sexual love, is less likely to give a would-be-lover the dispensation to feel as lustful and devoid of loving sentiment as he might like. Wanting to be loved with feeling can make a female vulnerable to being controlled, but there are trade-offs any way one looks at it. Girls are vulnerable when wussy, but when the alternative to wussy is indifferently letting the male feel as little or much love as he'd like, maybe being completely not wussy is a weaker option on her part. She could merely expect him not to use his feelings for controlling, but should a female have respect for a male who would find her beautiful when she is doing something bad that her lover would less tend to like? It's especially unselfishly beautiful when a female feels so much love in her chest she can hardly help hugging other girls to spread the feeling (or the comfortableness with the feeling) as it were. Anyway, there is a lack of discrimination between the (depraved) control a male can exert through depravity and the (at times beautiful) control a male can exert through his loving feelings.

Of course, there are some spheres in which it is important that spheres of control be exactly right. In particular, cruel catsy girls might become some species of wicked killer zombie if they let males love them only when they kill (or have killing fantasies). Mostly I think female owls when cruel just don't let male owls control them. Birds, having a cloaca, more tend to need use male controlling sentiment as a sign of male depravity. And they don't have breasts, either. Owls presumably excel above all others at removing zombifier rodents from the forest canopy or even floor. The dangers to cats of zombification are such that even if a girl's true self wants to kill for catsy reasons, the male would be wrong to force her to be herself there regardless whether he might find it pleasant or right. Similarly, even if it is a girl's true nature to kill somewhat excessively for catsy reasons, it is incumbent on the male to keep her from doing so by not loving her when she is trying to kill excessively. It is actually sexy for a male to be (by nature) that way, because having so many catsy girls want him that there aren't enough victims (were this some sort of society where ritualized killing of the most hated people replaces the judicial system somewhat) more suggests the male's sexual desirability than his not having enough girls to deal with the victims he has gotten society to allow him. Conservation of victims is just something a male catsy person is going to find pleasant more than a female catsy person in the process of killing something is going to find pleasant unless she realizes that her lover won't have loving feelings else: if girls want to have sex with you when killing and torturing things they hate, there's a distinct possibility you aren't going to be too keen about girls wasting victims to the point society at large objects or raises an eyebrow at all the killing.

Stephen A. Meigs म्हणाले...

But girls can't just be copy cats, either—all the girls have to be themselves when hating—if a girl having sex with you while killing something is just assuming that she would feel hate because the others killing it do, that is not sacred. Of course, in both sexes, there is real danger that the catsiness in sex can be for wicked reasons of destroying competitors, theft, or even genocide, as opposed to the catsiness just being for the sexiness of having sex which in its emotions pretty much can't be artificial (caused by the love potion that sodomy can possess). I sense impropriety in catsy sex that involves controlling wussy girls for fun, I think because the breast's feelings about caregiving might in a catsy context be too similar to desires for theft (of resources for care giving). The emotions of it might be too similar to those of killing people so as to get their pasture land for cows. Sexy is mostly especially good in catsy behavior, the emotions surrounding sexy being presumably dissimilar to thieving and genocidal emotion, the latter of which I suppose is some sort of lurid feeling (best not to explore those excessively disturbing latter feelings lest one self destruct). Life is sacred, and so if one adopts a catsy approach that destroys some of it (or merely fantasizes about that), one had better be extra sacred about it so as to make up for it (rather as sacredness is appropriate in the judicial system).

When carefulness about being controlled is extra important, it is a good sign to a girl if other girls being controlled by him feels enjoyable and right to her. And on the other hand, sometimes a friend of a girl somewhat uncomfortable with being emotionally wrapped up in a male might imagine herself as a sex object to him just so she won't get emotionally wrapped up in the way the girl fears of herself. The friend instead decides to get wrapped up in the love the careful hesitant girl possesses, and she just accepts whatever the male gives her when love compels her to be intimate with the girl when the girl is in a beautiful intimate relation with her lover, but (to comfort the girl) she is akin to a receptive passive plant as far as the male goes (assuming she finds the girl's intimacy beautiful). That way the hesitant girl can take comfort in knowing that a non-emotionally wrapped up friend finds her beautiful when the girl herself is (vulnerably) emotionally luxuriating in his loving feelings. Of course, the male doesn't have to view the girl's friend as a sex object (except to the extent that is implied by his deciding to have sex with her); he can have sex with her and have loving feeling for her even if she be directly indifferent (like an object) about whatever loving feeling he may have for her.

Regarding QEII, I remember a line from newly-married Prince Philip to a friend of his who had remarked that Lizzie's skin was exquisite: "She's like that all over".

As to the fashion/media elite and their double standards, my best example is Graydon Carter, editor of Vanity Fair. In the same issue they were congratulating some movie star for helping protect wildlife, they had a profile of a "priceless" Paris hotel manager, praising him for securing an old circus elephant for guests who wanted an exotic meat for their dinner party.

As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free
While God is marching on."

A lot of Southerners hate that hymn. They resent the thought that God was on the Union side.

My great, great uncle, in his letters to his wife, made it clear that slavery was the reason he volunteered when he had a wife and three children. He was wounded at Vicksburg and died on June 2 1863. I have his letters and her poems written after his death.

Chickens have one breast; women, normally two.

And men. Jesus was assumed to be male until feminism took over. There were even heresies that Mary Magdalene was his wife,

Queen Liz got her good qualities from her mother, Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. The smartest thing the Hanoverians ever did was to allow the young Prince Albert (later George VI) to marry that gin-drinking Scotswoman. No more dissipated Germanic princesses. Unfortunately for the Crown those good genes failed to take hold in second generation, which is to be expected, Secretariat's get didn't do much either.

I have known feminists who were not offended by "boobies."

I still remember our 8th grade teacher showing the class how to spell boobies on our calculators.

The rest of the class was spent trying to make other words like dick and penis show up on the calculators. The N and n was a real block IIRC. Not everyone of course, there was jaunty banter in that class. When did the fucking puritans take over civil society? Oh yeah progressives and "liberals." Seriously fuck you people.

Philip is a pretty lively sort. There might even be a royal bastard around somewhere.

He was a pretty good sailor in sailboats, which is my criterion for worthwhile people.

Was QE hot? Only the luxury liner ships bearing hername ... and that was hot as in sweating hot.

I can think of no better way to help celebrate the Christmas season with a heathy discourse on bosoms at Althouse. Cheers!

There is a portrait of the young Queen Elizabeth II, by Italian artist Pietro Annignoni. It was unauthorized, as far as I know. The Royal Society Fishmongers or something commissioned it. It was done in 1956. I have always thought it among the very finest portraits of the 20th century. Annignoni consciously channeled the early renaissance painters.

I don't remember noticing André Leon Talley, but he's an important fashion person. There had to be a reason to see him as being in Trumpland for it to be possible for him to be leaving Trumpland.

If Trump is lucky he'll get a few left wingers on video mocking his wife for wearing clothes off the rack. He ought to ask her to stop wearing fitted clothes immediately to get them on tape now before their insanity wears off.

Very lovely portrait, Chuck -- appropriately regal.

I like that. I may steal it, though few would notice. The alliteration is suitably Quaestorian.

(reposted to due Safari treacherously substituting "alteration" for alliteration. Can't turn your back, ever.)

This discussion reminds me of the scene from "It's a Mad,Mad,Mad,Mad,World" (I think I have enough "Mad"s in there). Great English actor, Terry Thomas, is driving with Milton Berle and says in his accent, "I don't understand you American's preoccupation with bosoms". Great laugh

Her Majesty's a pretty nice girl,
But she doesn't have a lot to say
Her Majesty's a pretty nice girl
But she changes from day to day
I want to tell her that I love her a lot
But I gotta get a bellyful of wine
Her Majesty's a pretty nice girl
Someday I'm going to make her mine, oh yeah,
Someday I'm going to make her mine.

Humlaut LeBlanc, Fashion Icon of Fabulous…

People ask me, they say ‘Humlaut, how can you always be so Fabulous…?

It is a gift, a gift from God, really. I feel grateful to have been chosen for this gift. As the two lightning bolts of my logo suggest, I believe in the divine strikes of Inspiration and Fabulous…

But it is not enough to just sit and wait for Inspiration: you must work to put yourself in the position where you are most open to Fabulous: Fabulous follows hard work….

That is why I inscribe my motto on every garment and product I produce:

“Work Sets You Free”

I believe that says it all, right…?

I am Humlaut LeBlanc, and I Believe in Fabulous…

I am Laslo.

Helen Mirren was also great - with the bosoms.

There was another dinner in Virginia, probably the same visit, when the butler came around with the chicken and asked Winston which piece of the bird he would like. He said, "I'd like breast." Whereupon the woman next to him said, "Mr Churchill, in this country we say white meat or dark meat."

Next day she got a corsage of flowers, saying, "Pin this on your white meat."

Maureen Dowd and by extension the NYT is afraid of "normalizing" the Trumps, as with the aptly named Charles Blow (and man, does he ever) wailing "This is not normal!" while banging his spoon on his highchair. Meanwhile, to advance this concept, Ms. Dowd uses a beyond-comprehensibly flamingly gay man wearing a FULL LENGTH FUR COAT to stand for her and her employer's (and Mr. Blow's) definition of "normal".

Once again, we are provided substantive evidence for the proposition, "And this is why Trump won." This was just insufferably foolish writing; all the big Andre did during the piece was hedge his bets anyway - where's the news in that?
