Hmm, pretty interesting dynamic here. Perhaps the Democrats will conclude that this "fake news" thing should not be looked at too closely - as is in no need to look for voter fraud because there is no such thing.

That's how far inside the bubble the lefties truly are. They actually believed that they could project and control the fake news meme to the right. That ship has already sailed -- the left invented fake news and they're being called out in spades.

Reminds me of the AP news story during the 2004 campaign reporting that the crowd at the George Bush rally at State Fair Park in Milwaukee booed when an announcement was made that Bill Clinton had entered the hospital with heart trouble. There was an "OOhhh..." from the crowd, but neither my wife or I heard any boos. AP reported it as the crowd booing. Fake news from the left is not new at all.

I vaguely recall some fairy tale from my childhood where a cloak over a shrub was the bad guy's way of winning but he was defeated when the good guys put cloaks on all the shrubs.

Some things never change.

Here us a link to some commentary on the AP "fake news" story at that time.

Ann Althouse કહ્યું...

The word should be "depublished."

It wasn't "unpublished." It was published. It was later taken down. "Un-" doesn't work like that. It you open a box and then close it again, it is not unopened. If you sell an item in your store and the customer brings it back for a refund, you'd say it was "returned," not "unsold." The customer wouldn't say "I want to unbuy this." You could say, "You already bought it," and then he'd say, "But I want to return it."

Ann Althouse કહ્યું...

I'll bet there were a lot of people who laughed when the first plane hit the World Trade Center.

Because they were not watching the event, but doing something else, perhaps playing with a child, and something made them laugh.

BarrySanders20 કહ્યું...

"The word should be 'depublished.'"

Or Kos could use the active "We removed the article."

But the passive voice and the newspeak together suits them. The haughtiness that shifts the blame to me if try to find the story is a bonus.

Tort law may have room for a new affirmative defense to a defamation action: "the story has been unpublished" defense. It was so fake it happened all by itself, as if it never was.

The thing is this has been declared "fake news" but it is still not clear if it is fake or not. I'm 100% certain that someone, somewhere in New Jersey somewhere was celebrating the towers falling. Last I knew there were still people who swear that something at least similar to the "dancing on rooftops" actually happened in some form, if not as popularly described, and as Ann says it may have been a misunderstanding. The problem is when you believe the media would spike the story even if it is true then it becomes very difficult to know what to believe.

Static Ping કહ્યું...

If Eichenwald wasn't there dimes to donuts he was only referencing the Daily Kos headline.

I still know people who believe the following:
1. That Sarah Palin said she could see Russia from her front porch.
2. That Dan Quayle thought the people of Latin America spoke Latin.

We all know where the first came from. An unfunny Tina Fey comedy attempt. Don't know where it got started that Sarah Palin was the one who said it, but it spread rapidly. The second was reported as serious fact by a reporter on the plane who was there when Dan Quayle made a joke about not speaking Latin, one everyone on the plane, reporters included, understood and laughed at. Fake news.

If I gave it some thought, I could likely come up with a dozen other examples. Oh, wait! We'll go to current reporting and editorials and op-eds in newspapers throughout the country. "Donald Trump is a misogynist racist." Fake news. From the gitgo. Just now- 884,000 hits on google.

JAORE કહ્યું...

Sarah Palin has probably had more fake news published about her than anyone else. The Tucson shooting of Gabby Giffords was blamed on Palin for weeks. Such as this story.

You can read the rest of the DU thread - http://www.democraticunderground.com/10028344032#post1 - where there's also a fake Trump tweet and a lot of smugness. It appears people were booing the protesters but it's more fun for them to imagine they were booing Glenn.

On the other hand, a real story is when Garrison Keillor announced Reagan's death during Prairie Home Companion and the primarily democratic Minnesota audience cheered. To his credit however, Keillor admonished those in the audience who had cheered and played a respectful tribute to Reagan.

Both un- and de-, one from the Germanic family and the other from the Latin/Romance family, can be used as reversative prefixes in English. They reverse the action of the root or base. Lock and unlock. Select and deselect. And they are currently in competition with each other in verbs like "friend/unfriend" and "friend/defriend." Un- is also a privative and that's where the ambiguity and confusion comes from.

Bad Lieutenant કહ્યું...

Jeff,

You mean you can't unring the bell, can't call back the bullet, can't un-eat the cake. True.

Also true is that on a clear day, one can see Russia from Alaska. Even Snopes, however grudgingly, confirms this:
